Casters for ESL One Katowice revealed

ESL has announced the casting crew for the upcoming CS:GO major in Katowice.

From March 12-15, the Polish city of Katowice will play host to its second CS:GO major, the fifth community-funded tournament overall, as 16 teams from all over the world will duke it out for the big prize of $100,000.

The inclusion of Spencer "⁠Hiko⁠" Martin, who is currently without a team following the disbandment of iBUYPOWER's squad, will certainly generate a lot of interest in the community. The former Cloud9 member will be joined by Planetkey Dynamics' Casper "⁠cadiaN⁠" Møller and by Alex "machine" Richardson in the analysis' desk.


Hiko will be in Katowice to analyse the matches 

Leight "Deman" Smith will once again cast a CS:GO event following his debut at the offline qualifier for ESL One Katowice, with Lauren "Pansy" Scott, Anders Blume and Stuart "Tosspot" Saw making up the rest of the commentary team.

For this tournament, ESL has hired two observers who are well familiar with the game on a top level: Halvor "⁠vENdetta⁠" Gulestøl, who played for Norway in ESEC 2013, and Janko "⁠YNk⁠" Paunović, formerly of iNation.

Honestly, as long as the caster is speaking proper english and him having basic knowledge and awareness of whats going on is enough for me. Fifflaren's repetition and stuttering was the one thing that annoyed me the most. In the end though, its up to Valve and ESL on who to cast the tournament so our oppinions matter not. Lets at least hope we get some good games.

I think DDK already proved himself that he could be good with any caster. ( like casting with Sadokist at MLG Aspen) For James, dunno i've never seen him casting much with any other people than DDK. He casted with ScreaM once but i think that's for entertaining purpose.

Kind of disappointed with this cast. Deman has been doing an OK job at commentating. But, Pansy is just god-awful! Very disappointed to see such poor casters at a major event. Anders is a commentating god so thats a plus. But, Anders is made ten times better when complimented by Semmler. They are a dynamic duo and anyone else that casts with Anders will detract of the greatness of that man. Why no DDK or James? Both are well respected and loved by the community. I mean taking commentators that don't regularly cast CS:GO and giving them lead roles for the first major of 2015? TosspoT is an mediocre e-sports commentator but he is horrid at CS! Please ESL, why you have to do this to us fans? Listen to the fans! We hate pansy for her incomprehension of the game and lack of knowledgeable comments. Deman and TosspoT are abysmal but why throw them into CS when duo's like DDK and James and Anders and Semmler are already so good at commentating. Shame to see this and I hope ESL takes this in to thought before hiring unknowledgeable casters for a major.

This is really disappointing, specially to see Deman there, sure he is a great caster but he does not deserve to cast at a CS GO major by any means. He has not been a CS GO supporter, caster during the early days and does not share the same kind of love for the game as Fifflaren, Semmler and even DDK does. As for Pansy, well she is good but there are people who are better. That being said I can understand why the desk is as bad as it is, you can't take Lurrpis for obvious reasons and you can't take Thoorin after his comments about Poland :/ so we are stuck with MACHINE, Hiko and Cadian (cadian is pretty good thugh, but still...)

All this hate here. Look, ESL of course uses their own casters. You won't see casters of a different league (FACEIT) there, at least not in place of actual ESL casters. Then you have to realize that it's actually good that we always see a few new faces at major events doing the casting. That helps give more people the chance to do it on the broadcasting side of the game and consequently more people will want to get into it. And it also creates some kind of competition where casters can't get lazy. Both aspects serve to increase the chances that we get actually good casters. I am also glad they actually paid players this time around for analysis instead of just pulling them after they have dropped out. cadiaN deserves this.

ESL has casters and they work their events. If you think that's somehow wrong then you might as well not watch an ESL-organised event. DDK and James are good at what they do, but you can't expect them do play a role in this event. FACEIT might get the chance to host a Valve-sponsored event in the future as well. Do you think they will then put ESL casters there instead of people associated with their org? I wasn't being politically correct. I am not saying more people for the sake of diversity, I am saying more people having the chance to make money in broadcasting = more talent will come up and more competition will drive people in the business to be more dedicated. Look at how many people want ReDeYe or Joe Miller. Heads up people, those two don't nearly care about or follow the game as much as you'd like to or as (at least ReDeYe) would like you to believe. I wouldn't want to see them here because they haven't been in touch with the scene and if casting was a popularity contest they would always be there without having to up their casting game whatsoever.

THEY'VE GOT 2 FUCKING MAJORS. How many majors do Room On Fire have? How many majors do FaceIT have? The only fucking reason, why objectively better casters, DDK, Semmler, Sadokist and James are left out, is because Deman is the guy picking the casters. It's his job title, so rather than picking good casters, he wants to hype up himself. So you say DDK and James are objectively better casters than some of the people in thise lineup. Then I want to ask you: Where did those guys come from? DDK is a quake caster and James is a real estate agent. The only reason why today we have them in the CS scene is because casting is financially worthwhile for more people than just Anders and Semmler. Who knows what kind of broadcast talent still is out there that would never get a chance to show it to people if we just always listened to the same handful of people. I am not saying Pansy or Deman are those people, I am actually equally elitistic as you about having only the best hardcore CS casters, but at least I am not blind as to the implications of stagnancy.

The issue is, that this is the wrong platform to bring them out on. Having them at the ESL Online Qualifiers? Sure. Having them at the ESL Offline Qualifiers? Ehh, you're pushing it, but sure. Having them at the second biggest tournament all year? Fuck no. This is an allstar event in terms of skill level brought by teams, in terms of viewership and in terms of production value. Why bottleneck all of that goodness, by bringing casters that have limited knowledge, are boring to listen to or even BOTH of those things at the same time? It makes no sense to do it at this scale. I don't disagree with you either. Give them a chance, or even several at the lesser tournaments. But don't fuck the general public in the ass at one of the three prime events.

Fair enough, I can agree with that to the extend where I also think petty league policies or the wrong people doing the picking can compromise the broadcast quality and that should not happen when it's about one of the most aniticpated events of the year. On the upside we have actual players on the analyst desk (I guess we all know why Thorin isn't there), at least have Anders, and to be fair TosspoT is a better hype caster than I get the sense you accredit him with. There is a serious lack of color casters and while James/DDK or Sadokist would have been fitting for that, I guess ESL plans to just get players from the participating teams for that again.

Last year at Katowice he practically took over the post-game analysis and upped the value of that single-handedly for pretty much the entirety of the event. Didn't see a single penny for that. Not saying he is the best player to have at the analyst desk, just saying he deserves some kind of gratitude from the ESL as they hadn't had to hire somebody last time around because he turned out to be a lucky pick.

Out of this entire list there is one person that actually deserves a spot as caster for an international event, and that is Anders. When addressing someone as shit it is pretty derogatory in case you haven't noticed it yourself or were taught at that (sunday) school. In the same way implying the Redeye hires people on the basis of friendship instead of their casting experience is also quite a bold accusation without any proof on your behalf thus ending up being quite defamatory.

pansy confirmed on twitter she wasnt hired because of skill but because of connections. also it is known public fact (just ask people around or them itself) damien(this fat dota dude) is a friend of redeye and pansy is gf or sth of her boss damien. how can we discus anything if you ban and delete everything which is not a positive?

If you could point me to the tweet you refer to I would indeed appreciate it. So people being related in some way does automatically entitle you to state, again without proof (yes, here I refer to Redeye stating what you claim he does), that instead of casting people are recruited for an ESL event on the basis of friendship. That lack of proof is what leads me to understand, and agree, why your message was deleted. And it is not a matter of banning (it has been explained multiple times that each ban has a well stated reason aside of the fact that you haven't been banned, have you?) and criticism, which is perfectly fine even if not 'positive', is not confused with addressing a given person in an offensive and derogatory way, as stated.

I remember her last year casting ESL Cologne quarter finals on LDLC vs VP match. Happy's team usually plays very slow and pretty boring on T side. Pansy's voice just put me to sleep. And i missed that KQLY's usp jumpshot when i woke up. I mean... WTF ??? I'd rather watch the match from Russian streamer than listening to Pansy cast.

Oh how I would've loved if the setup was: - Redeye - Joe Miller - Anders & Semmler (RoomOnFire) and top it with some springles, SirScoots. Get a former pro or current pro to help with the analysis. Seems like a good set, but I regret that it's not Semmler or Fifflaren instead of Pansy... This woman should just quit casting. She could be decent as a host, but she has no clue about CS and doesn't do any effort to improve her knowledge. It's even worse that the only female caster out there has to be that bad at casting CS, she could be an inspiration for other women, instead she just crushes their hopes in pepperonis.
