MTG makes offer for ESL

Swedish media group Modern Times Group (MTG) has made an offer for the Electronic Sports League (ESL), according to a report by Breakit.se.

Founded in 1997, MTG operates TV channels in several countries across the globe and is looking to get into e-sports by purchasing ESL, the game branch of Turtle Entertainment.

This is not the first time, however, that MTG is linked with e-sports: earlier in the month, the Swedish media group was reported by the Daily Dot to be interested in broadcasting the new tournament circuit hosted by ESL, which saw the light of day on Tuesday in a joint announcement by the German company and ESEA.

ESL has reportedly drawn the attention of media giant MTG

The exact figure on the table is unknown, but Breakit.se reports that MTG could be offering several hundreds of millions of Swedish Krona (SEK) to get its hands on ESL.

"We never comment on that type of information," a source inside MTG told Breakit.se.

If the deal goes through, it could mean that ESL's tournaments will be shown on television in several countries. MTG's operations cover four continents and include TV channels and platforms, online services, content production businesses and radio stations.

UPDATE: Changed from hundreds of millions of dollars to hundreds of millions of Swedish Krona (SEK) to reflect the original report.

Why 2016? These two are.consider the best esports titles.out there! But by 2016 csgo will get 18 MILLION $ prize pool throughout the year by just 1 company.... then u got this big national tv offer! Then also a valve sponsored event may happen worth 1 million $ cos u know summers are coming so time for another esport case which may be better this time and a compendium system may come too! So the point is... LoL or dota wont be the best esports after 2016

If they are smart enough (which they are) they still use ESL twitch aswell as TV because of multiple sources of income.

Doubt it. Takes a bigger crew to run the show on several sites and I'd guess they make more money from broadcasting on a site like tv6play then Twitch and hence will not broadcast on several websites.

The tv people can handle their own shit while twitch has another group of guys&gals to handle the twitch streams. Twitch are superior to another streaming site and especially to "TV6play" just dumb to not stream it on twitch.

There has to be people moderating the Twitchchat and so on. Hence more employees and a higher cost. I'd prefer that they focus solely on Twitch but I doubt that will ever happen.

Thats not nice, bro, it is a bullshit offer, they can take down the biggerst organsation in esport if they pleased witht the viewer, on there channel, i would say ESL should stick to what they're doing, it is not like the owner of ESL ain't rich...

How is hundreds of millions a bullshit offer? I don´t think the owners of ESL will see it that way. And moreover, we don´t know the exact figure. These kind of things happen every day - big companies getting bought by even bigger ones. It´s nothing bad, but just how the free enterprise market works :)

The owner probably doesn't own 100% of ESL. When you're talking about something this big, you need investors and that means giving a percentage of your company. Yeah, but he'll be extremely rich, but not in the one hundred million club.

Yea, but the owners will make executive decisions. They could be one of the good/smart guys and leave it up to the experts, but experience shows that it's not always the case.

MTG owns a bunch of production companies in which they don't interfere with "everyday business". I would be very surprised if MTG chose to take executive decisions that would change format or production of tournaments.

Video games being exclusive on TV never works. Ever. They aren't cool enough yet. Give it another 5-7 years. And I wouldn't want a company that doesn't know shit about the games to be running the events and in control of the content.

They'll just hire the right people to run the event. Did you read "hundreds of millions"? I doubt they would make a bad tournament, lol. They wouldn't spend like 400kk to make some t2 level tournaments

CGS, WSVG and others have had loads of dosh and still got it wrong. Video games on TV don't mix. People aren't going to get away from their computers to watch something they already do on their computers.

You don't understand. MTG already owns multiple TV-channels in Sweden (and the Nordic and Baltic countries as well). One of which is Swedish TV6, the same channel that did the reality-documentary about NiP before the first major, Dreamhack 2013. They also show e-sports via their online streams (tv6-play) on a regular. This would indeed be a massive expansion of that business, but it's not entirely new for them.

I'm surprised that MTG is interested in purchasing ESL, but on the other hand, the company's founder (the late Jan Stenbeck) had a business philosophy of always being first. From a financial stand-point, I don't really see how this is going to generate revenues of "hundreds of millions of dollars" but MTG has managed to make money from virtually anything in the past, so maybe they'll do the same this time.

I think MIRAA might have misinterpreted the swedish article from Breakit. It's supposed to be hundreds of millions SEK, not USD. I personally agree with you though, if there's a time to step in big into the esport scene, now is probably the time.

Yeah, but still, hundreds of millions of SEK still translates to tens of millions of dollars. Quite a hefty investment for something that doesn't generate that much cash (yet).

This really is a "biggest dick" contest ESL slaps their cash on the table and hires the work of the largest teams and further isolates the smaller teams who work just as hard In comes Modern Times Group who slap cash on ESLs table and offer to purchase their organisation, essentially isolating the community further and leaving the direction of CSGO in the hands of MTG shareholders

Did it get big because of TV? Hell no, I don't see a reason why it should expand to TV cause who the fuck actually watches TV nowadays. I watch series/movies/streams everything on PC so only when I might watch TV is when I connect them to see on a bigger screen but other than that, not really. TV is fucking overrated and it won't make eSports bigger, therefore if ESL actually accepts their offer, they're dumb. eSports is only getting bigger and bigger.

Also, more money put into tournaments equals higher production value so we don't have to wait until 2am for a game scheduled to start at 10pm because of delays.

More like 30 million people since they broadcast in other countries as well. $2bn in assets is quite large for a company getting involved in e-sports.

Does anyone have any 100% game related tv shows that are successful in their country out there? Demographic surely if someone plays games will be on a computer, I don't see many kids (non eSports related) personally. In the UK we've had dedicated tv channels, tv shows over the past even 20years and they've all eventually shut down or not done well at all. The only TV shows that do well in the UK are Technology programs which may show gaming as a side aspect, apart from that as much as I'd like eSports to be successful - if DotA or LoL was on TV I don't think it would be as successful as people think. Online streaming and Twitch is the perfect market for eSports, every year this grows - TV and eSports in my eyes dont do well.

Yeah, maybe MTG wont broadcast it via television but rather using their own streaming service. Keep in mind though that MTG is a company that historically has been able to make money from virtually anything (in the mid 90's they did a short program called "Swedish Enema Championship" and that was exactly what it sounds like. People getting enemas and then trying to hold it for as long as possible. That was shown on television.) I guess MTG will try to make money from advertisements rather than the tournaments themselves, so we might see commercial breaks if this becomes reality.

The biggest issue with with e-sports on TV, especially CS, is that they cant seem to follow a schedule even the slightest. So im guessing it will still be webtv, no big difference in other words.

Hopefully the do the smart thing and hold onto the business and sell the distribution/television rights to them instead. ESL have worked too hard to be where they are now to just leave it in the hands of some media giant imo.
