Turner to televise new CS:GO league*

American media conglomerate Turner (officially Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.) is looking to televise a new CS:GO league in 2016, according to a report by the Daily Dot.

In a day which could have certainly brooked no more large stories in the CS:GO world, the late hours of Wednesday evening in North America saw reports emerge that Turner Broadcasting had teamed up with talent agency WME/IMG in the hopes of creating a new esports league in CS:GO.

The report was first broached by Richard Lewis of Daily Dot, with mention made of the media company looking to bring in top teams for two, ten-week annual seasons, beginning in 2016.

The as-yet-unnamed league would also feature programming that includes player profiles and tidbits on the history of Counter-Strike for newfound viewers.

The league would air on Friday nights in front of a studio audience on Turner's TBS network, a basic cable channel in the United States which reaches out to "90 million homes" in the country.

TBS also broadcasts content ranging from comedy such as American Dad and Conan O'Brien's late-night talkshow to other sports such as Major League Baseball regular season and postseason games (the station once solely covered the Atlanta Braves, a baseball team in the same city in which Turner Broadcasting is headquartered).

CS:GO has been making inroads into the American media market in 2015

With the confirmation of compLexity owner Jason Lake on Reddit that team owners had met with Turner executives in Atlanta, along with the story receiving pickup in mainstream media press outlets, it seems safe to assume that gears are truly in motion for such a league.

Such a league may raise problems in an already oversaturated events calendar and, as Lewis mentions in his report, the company will "will not seek to lock players or teams into exclusivity contracts." In an apparent press release, Lenny Daniels commented on the decision to invest in CS:GO:

"Esports is one of the fastest growing entertainment genres among young adults around the world...We’re looking forward to creating a tremendous live event atmosphere, leveraging the infrastructure and expertise within Turner Studios, and presenting the competitions in an innovative way throughout our portfolio of leading brands," Daniels stated.

The president of TBS (as well as TNT, another American basic cable channel) and chief creative officer at Turner, Kevin Reilly added:

"We are proud to establish a leadership position in this rapidly growing arena, which I see as a tent pole for the next chapter of TBS...The level of rabid fandom and engagement that we see in this world is extraordinary and we aim to up the experience for both the players and fans alike and provide a cutting-edge live experience on both linear and digital TBS platforms."

In addition, Variety, an American trade magazine, pointed out that the move is also part of WME/IMG's continued mission to acquire a live-event profile with the company acquiring stakes in everything from Miss Universe to bull-riding in recent years.

Regardless, such a high profile project represents a return to mainstream exposure in Counter-Strike perhaps unseen since the days of the appalling (considering how it turned out) Championship Gaming Series in 2007. Any further developments will be reported on as they occur.

*Update* An official media release from Time Warner, of which Turner Broadcasting is a subsidiary, has cemented the reports more firmly as fact.

This isn't about the current NA scene, it's about broadcasting competitive CS to people who may not know about it. This won't make Cloud9 or CLG more competitive directly, but when 12-15 year old kids see this show they may be more likely to play CS competitively thus increasing the talent pool and giving NA a better chance in the coming years.

Dude, just no. It won't do shit because NA players rarely have been fully committed to CS full time. There needs to be a change in mentality. NA has to have the same mentality all the European top teams have which NA just has not and never had in CS:GO.

Dude, you have no idea how much TV broadcasting affects kids in America. You most likely live in Germany. We understand the CURRENT players in NA have mental problems. Everyone doesn't need to change. You are taking about old problems, so pop off. He is not talking about the commitment of players he is arguing that IF these games get broadcast and people realize that you can make money on gaming. The number of little kids with talent will grow because these kids believe that they could have a future in gaming.

Not like the EU scene is growing equally. It's not my place to flame someone with EU > NA but a bigger talent pool won't change anything as long as mentality doesn't change.

I guess you make a fair point saying that as long mentality issues are there nothing will change, but IF CS is televised I think things could change drastically. People would have the motivation to be good because if things are being televised then whoever is winning is going to get the most press. More press for orgs more money and the fame for the players is just an added bonus. Also regarding your first sentence, are you saying that EU scene is growing as fast as the NA scene? I personally don't think the EU scene has grown that much in the past years.

you're obsessed lol. we do not have to have the same mentality as them to beat them. we just need to improve and get stronger as teams. this starting to broadcast on tv just takes a step farther, one that we likely would've took a little longer to take without it. here in america everybody watch tvs unless they live behind their computer. like even kids who don't know about the game can start watching it just making the game explode and become bigger.

This year, ain't on YouTube. They be copy-righting that shit straight away. In short: Technical issues and disturbing misc faults throughout the whole show/episode, inexperienced commentators, it seemed like the production crew just jumped into it without doing research and straight up nonprofessional. It might have gotten better but I don't SK|Believe, also they don't send/sent it on a weekly schedule I think(?) but rather a few matches here and there. Everything was also sent live.

As Mr. Lake already knows, they already tried to start a league like this in Source and it was a disaster. Here is the wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Championship_Gamin.. As Mr. Lake knows, DirecTV then tried to take the coL and Team 3D Brands hostage. I hope this isn't a disaster. I also hope that they have a decent prizepool. TI5 was $18 million, mostly crowdfunded. ESL and Valve just announced the Fall Dota2 Major with a BASE pool of $3 million joindota.com/en/news/32069-valves-first-.. here. I have been in gaming a long time now. I remember when Jason Lake had an interview with Team Sportscast Network about 10 years ago and said that he would be the first person to give out the first $1 million esport contract and that gaming would take over the lives of the 18-34 demographic. With the explosion in growth 10 years later, it looks like coL.1 was true to his word.

CGS was completely different as a huge portion of the community (professional and amatuer) was playing 1.6. There was a split between the community. CGS choose source and when the league died after season 2 many pros went back to 1.6. Without two games directly competing for viewership, sponsorship, and people aspiring to be 'pros', this league shouldn't really be compared to CGS imo

It's COUNTER STRIKE not football though. 5,000-20,000 people watch counter strike leagues like ESEA and CEVO in NA.... are random cable tv viewers be willing to watch CS matches?? Just seems like if anything they should be putting league or dota on TV but is CS more appealing to just TV?

Dota is simply too complex for it to catch on with the average NA viewer. CS would be much easier for the American populace to understand. Also, a national television channel will hit 20K viewers on any given night without a problem. I vaguely recall CGS, I just hope this is more true to CS and isn't so dramatic.

The problem here is not of one title or two. The problem is lack of a well structured self-sustaining strong league. Back in the day, CGS was obsessed with making television instead of making a strong backbone for pro-gaming. Also, the typical American mindset of managing Gaming Teams like NBA franchises is akin to pushing a square through a circle. These were the reasons CGS failed back then and why it will fail again today.

Yes, CGS was a disaster, but a lot of it had to do with the format. It was a battle of gaming organizations instead of CS teams. Your favorite CS team could win, but if the FIFA player who plays for the same organization lost, the CS team might not advance.

+1 what happens if there is a major delay and the match isn't finished by the time the broadcast is scheduled to end? Its not twitch. You can't just go to a 30 minute unscheduled break, then pad for another 30 and start the match 1 hour late. The show will be over and the next scheduled program will have started.

They shouldn't take such drastic measures to bring esports into TV, why not go along with Apple's app strategy. 1 App for a channel and you have to buy/subscribe to that app. People who wants it should buy it.

but why watch it on apple tv when we have chromecast, amazon fire, and smart tv's? plus the smart community would just go to twitch.

Damn you 'muricans.... "go along with Apple's app strategy" does NOT mean it's OS specific. OBV They would make it for the most used platforms e.g. PC/WIN & Android.

You asked a question that's irrelevant to his statement. He stated that they should follow a strategy which is already well thought out instead of doing some dumb shit, he never said anything about which platform should be used which was the core of your question.

Once the strategy is mentioned you should already know that TV is out of the question, app stands for application which is used by modern computer devices. An application for AppleTv would not reach their desired audience and should be last on their list of supported platforms. You're the one not "putting 1 and 1 together". A little use of common sense and you would've answered the question by yourself. Maybe I should link you to LetMeGoogleThatForYou using "Is it smart to make an app for appletv when the audience is mostly PC-oriented?" as keywords?

what are you getting at lol. you're jumping far out of context. when did we say anything about getting to the reaching the desired audience? apple tv gets apps, it has for almost 3 years now. with this newer apple tv coming out and the hype around it im sure they'll bring it there as even television channel ceo's have been working with apple tv as of late and it's looking like apple is looking to even broadcast your daily shows on the newer apple tv. your let me google that for you wouldn't even give a vaild answer btw google is smart but not that smart.

I'm jumping far out of context? This article is about a TV-show (which requires an audience), SalKNightRO wrote a suggestion about re-evaluating their strategy (they still need an audience). I've been working&studying media so maybe I'm requiring too much of a normal citizen but I don't think this type of "putting 1 and 1 together" is too much to ask for. Never once did he mention AppleTv and it seems to only get hyped in the US. Just because the concept/strategy is made by one firm does not mean it has to be used via their products/platforms. When I talk to you I feel like I'm talking to those who failed their senior year at school, not because they weren't there but because they were simply too dumb to get above F in their courses. Oh and by the way, LMGTFY line was a metaphor, I didn't expect you to take it literal.

It has been tried before, but this seems to be more pure and true to cs rather than the carnival CGS was in the US. Also, I don't believe previous attempts were made on such established networks in our country. If this is going to be effective, I think they have the best chance.

CGS didn't "Choose" source to be played... Valve refused to grant them the rights to have 1.6 played at their event because of wanting source to gain popularity and the fact they were literally trying to kill 1.6.. So CGS was forced into using source at the event. A televised event / tournament of considerable size cannot just do their own thing and go "okay we're going to have this played and do this!"... It isn't that simple.. They first need permission and the rights to do so, or they can get sued. Also.... CGS didn't "kill" CS at all.. The problem was CGS was pigeonholed into having a game played at their event by valve that most of the community hated... So obviously the event was doomed from the start, basically. Even 90% of the pro players competing at CGS hated the fact they had to play source and were doing it sheerly for the $$$ (This obviously isn't the case now and would not be a problem anymore because there is only one relevant counter-strike title).

I don't think a television show featuring CS is really for us is it? If these shows were for the CS community they would only have ~20-30K viewers a night, wouldn't edit out rounds, or give people red and blue jerseys. I think these shows, in addition to making money, get more people interested in CS. To be honest, if you showed me cs1.6 in the same year Cod4 was released I would never play 1.6. It's a great game, but it looks awful compared to games released in 2008. To the American populace, graphics are more important than gameplay, especially when it's strictly for specators. I think source was the only way that show was going to get attention among regular people.

Oh boy, top tier teams locked into a LAN for 5 months a year for a broadcast that most of the games audience wont watch. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG. seriously. Why are people excited about this. Even if they're not contractually locked in, they're still practically locked in. It wont be viable for teams to attend other LANs while this is going on. Also, apparently it's not live? What the fuck is the point?

In most countries around the world Thorin is tame, he has no worries about his future, you simply can't have a serious analyst desk without him, he is the most knowledgeable man about Counter Strike history on the planet and any serious broadcast that wants to show new fans the history and prestige of teams needs Thorin to make that happen.

Aren't current successful leagues and tournaments ALREADY broadcast? This is about creating opportunities to form NEW pro, funded, NA teams. CS:GO is popular, and that's why people will watch it. You should HOPE it is highly successful; if it is, it will likely give a nice boost to salaries of all pro players, casters, etc, worldwide. I for one would really like to see these guys pull in the kind of money that they actually deserve, all of them. As far as doubting whether 'TV' is a good choice for media distribution.. Read the official press release, they are by no means neglecting putting stuff online. "Additionally, digital coverage will include live daily competitive gaming content distributed Tuesday through Friday during each tournament week, as well as a live digital companion experience on Friday nights offered simultaneously with the TBS presentation". I'm feeling quite optimistic about this, in that it will benefit the scene globally, whether or not it becomes a success in NA.

You guys are fucking dumb if you think people that don't watch eSports will flick through their TV, see CSGO tournament and be like "hey, lemme watch this" uh no. People that think eSports are ready for mainstream are brain dead. eSports is still a niche thing, thats getting BIGGER with more money involved. But to think its ready for the masses, is idiotic and stupid investment by Turner. This will surely fail in America.

Nice for murica, but probably a fail if they don't get the expected number of viewers. On top of that if it's NA "restricted teams" with cable TV has the only viewing option, i really dunno in what aspect this is good.
