Astralis see off mousesports to book final spot

Astralis are through to IEM Sydney's title decider after defeating mousesports 2-1 in the semi-finals.

The second semi-final in Sydney kicked off on Dust2, with spectators quickly realising that this would most likely be a very quick game. MOUZ, who started out on the Terrorist side, struggled to break through Astralis' defence during the early stages and kept losing all aim duels, reaching the seventh round with a combined six kills.

It was only then that MOUZ finally got a round on the board, with Martin "STYKO" Styk following that up with a 1v2 clutch to prevent an economic reset. MOUZ would be able to add a third to their tally, but the rest of the half was all about Astralis' double-AWP setup, which helped the Danes to pick up a commanding 12-3 lead.

More misery was to come for the StarSeries champions as Astralis secured the pistol round in convincing fashion, thus quashing any glimmer of hope that their opponents had. The Danish team would not take their foot off the gas, winning three more rounds without response to seal a comprehensive victory.

Astralis took the series with two clean map wins

Carrying their momentum into Inferno, the next map, Astralis got out to a 3-0 lead after punishing MOUZ' aggression in banana in the pistol round. But once MOUZ got money in the bank, the landscape of the game changed dramatically. Tomáš "oskar" Šťastný's men won eight of the next nine rounds to put Astralis in danger of getting blown out, but the Danes upped the pace and secured the final three rounds of the half to bring the deficit to just one round.

The second half began with MOUZ taking the pistol round thanks to a trio of kills from oskar in an A execution. The European mixture picked up the subsequent anti-ecos, bringing the scoreline to 11-7, but then Astralis set up a very strong defence, winning six of the following seven rounds to reclaim the lead for the first time since the start of the game.

MOUZ then picked up back-to-back rounds, leaving Astralis' players in a dire economic situation. Luckily for them, Emil "Magisk" Reif came up huge, securing two kills in a risky 3v3 retake on B before securing a trio of kills in the following round. With Astralis on match point, STYKO came to MOUZ' rescue as he won a decisive 1v1 to send the game to overtime - in which they would come out victorious with a flawless CT side.

mousesports looked off the pace for most of the series

It all came down to Cache, where Astralis took a 3-0 lead after winning the pistol round with a trio of kills from Nicolai "device" Reedtz. MOUZ hit back in the next round, courtesy of a quad-kill from Miikka "suNny" Kemppi, but it would not take long for the Danes to regain control of proceedings.

Astralis did not give their opponents any room to manoeuvre, with the scoreline blooming to a 9-2 advantage for the Danes. A 1v3 clutch from Chris "chrisJ" de Jong still gave MOUZ fans some hope, but the CTs quickly bounced back and won the remaining rounds of the half.

In the second half, MOUZ found a lifeline as they won a force-buy after losing the pistol round, but it was simply too little, too late, as the Danes would go on to string three rounds together to put the match to bed and seal passage to Sunday's title match, against FaZe.

That dust2 pick from mouz was really brave, they got overconfident after having beated G2 on it. I have just 1 question - how many months will that domination last? I doubt it can last significantly longer than fnatic's domination with dennis, it took a year for gla1ve to finally build a winning team (and it was a piece of luck that Kjaerbye left and they managed to get a more fitting player), but once it gets successfully countered, he will need another big bunch of months to rebuild it and start winning titles again. The cool part about Astralis though is that they're not really heavyhitting (like KRiMZ some time ago or the ropz+oskar+SuNny trio at SLTV4), just each player plays his role well enough, it's good for them, because even somebody's slump (except for device's) will not make them fall lower than top4. Will FaZe be able to put up a real fight in the final? Doubt so...

Astralis was top1 for some period last year and they were always a threat to any team. In csgo every domination ends one day - look at SK, but dominating the scene even for one month is an achievment. Also - another final for Faze this year, at least they are consistent in making deep run.

I actually think the faze will put up a great fight and it will be the best series in 2018. Pls faze don't choke. I want it to be close but Astralis should win.

I don't think FaZe can handle them at all right now. The main reason Astralis are playing this well is individuals are all playing well and yes Magisk has fitted in so well as more of a rock than Kjaerbye and also more capable as a playmaker as a bonus. The system is such that yes, even if they all drop off they're a solid team who will still win some games, if most players are on point they can finish top 4. Right now though, every team that is potentially better, is crippled with systemic or human problems like communication issues; or are rebuilding after changes (or combinations of problems). So unless FaZe players all show up and some of those unpredictable factors in CSGO swing the game their way, 3-0 is realistic, 3-1 with FaZe winning Inferno is pretty likely. Something like FaZe winning 3-0 would just blow my mind though. Hopefully they win a map and make the others close

Are you from Sweden =D. You really sound like a guy that wants Sweden to look better than it is at cs.. And for slumps and teams that has been on the top and havent grinded there way back.. It took Fnatic 2 years to grind back.. And now they are falling short once again =). Lasted 1 lan for them.. Astralis has consistently been beating teams 16-5, 16-3, 16-2,16-4,16-3... They are so strong right now, and if i know Gla1ve well it will take them much longer to fall. Cause he is going to push them harder from every win.

They are good on nuke and got destroyed there by Astralis. So they took a gamble as mirage got vetoed.

Yet on nuke they will always have a chance against anyone. Cache has been their permaban and astralis is very good at it. The results show. Stupid stupid stupid risk that went as expected.

Yeah, as I said. They took a gamble, as it worked well against G2. Didn't pay off against AST obviously. mouz' map pool is just too shallow.

I can understand the gamble with dust2, but not with the decider. Astralis would have likely gone to train, because you do not want to play map like nuke twice against same team. And nuke and train are strong maps for mouz.

they don't want to play overpass as well. that's the problem. But I guess you mean, they should have banned cache instead of nuke.

What I mean is that astralis is strong on all maps currently. Dust2 was the only question mark. So the logical choice for mouz outside dust2 is to aim for maps they are themselves strong at, like mirage, train, nuke, and inferno. Cache and overpass were almost 100% suicides for mouz against astralis, which is very strong on both of those.

Mouz is definitely top3 team at nuke. But astralis would have most likely picked train as third, because it is quite common to try avoid playing same strong team on same maps twice in the tournament. Nevertheless, the chances would have been much better at either train or nuke, as astralis is so much more stronger team on cache than mouz.

They're just lacking in the finest points, the synergy between players. No team is better at CT fundamentals now that SK are rebuilding. Fnatic are up there but the synergy and tactical level of Astralis is just so suffocating unless you are a team on a similar level when it comes to the details. In one word DEPTH

You see? Magisk, the new recruit, is so blended into the team that you feel Magisk has been a part of Ast since a year ago or so. REAL MAGIC.

Even without k0nfig you could argue this is a Danish superteam their defense is pretty incredible, getting anywhere near the CSGO skill ceiling is hard but they are doing it
