ESL One Cologne match postponed as Chaos join protest against racism and police brutality in the US

The game between Liquid and Chaos which was scheduled for 22:00 will take place "later this week" due to "ongoing circumstances in the US".

The news was broken an hour before the scheduled start by Chaos, who announced on Twitter that they will not be competing in the match in order to give light to "the protests against this country's continued systemic racism and police brutality", referring to the events happening in the United States after Jacob Blake, a Black man, was shot seven times in the back by the police in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Liquid and Chaos will face off at a later date this week

The North American CS:GO teams therefore follow the example set by NBA teams, which have decided to not play their playoff games and reschedule them for a later date.

After Chaos' announcement, ESL has confirmed that the match will not take place today and that they have "agreed to reschedule" the game, with no more details shared by the tournament organizer.

Liquid have also released a statement, confirming that Chaos initated the postpoment and added that they support the decision. "We believe competition is our players'platform and it's their personal decision wheter to use it as a means to protest", the organizaion explained on Twitter. "We appreciate and support players who do make that decision".

Hopefully this raises more awareness for the problem of systemic racism in the United States, whether or not it will actually help incite change for the better.

Well when the states that voted Trump and the states that voted Hillary both have repeated instances of cops just fucking killing black people it's probably a bigger issue.

What an ignorant response. What you are staying is that the only black lives that matter are the ones that die at the hands of white cops.......which is HARDLY proportional to all of the black children's lives lost at the hand of gang members and street violence. You're despicable.

no, you brought it there. All I have done is used your logic from your "black on black" crime. I believe either what I said is true(it's not) or we can just call the two mentioned crime. Police brutality and their abuse of power is the real issue and it happens at an alarming rate within the black community. Can we leave it at that?

It’s only happening in blue states you dumb fk and they are refusing the national guard because they want to portray it as trumps fault. Go do some fkn research before talking sht. BLM is a fkn joke. Racism in America LOl. In the last 2 years 9 black people have died to cops unethically just fkn 9. Stop talking this sht about racism when it doesn’t even exist. THERE IS NO FKN RACISM OR POLICE BRUTALITY AMERICA LOL. GO LOOK AT THE FACTS. BLAKE DESERVED TO BE SHOT FROM VIDEO EVIDENCE. KYLE WAS WITHIN HIS RIGHTS TO SHOOT THOSE 3 convicted rapists and murders from prison. America was thriving under trump. The democratic media used BLM to start their antifa gang to destroy America with in to cause divide or Trump was gonna clean the floor with them. Fkn clueless sociopath leftest make me sick. The only people rioting and looting are that of age of school kids. Fkn useless uneducated children.

Total nonsense. This "systemic racism" is happening in Democrat controlled cities. Democrat police chiefs, Democrat mayors, Democrat governors and guess what Democrats support Antifa and BLM. Time to grow up and realize you are being played. I was a Democrat when younger - now I have seen through their nonsense and realize the party who started the last civil war is trying to start a new one to impose Marxism on the US.

IMO this is ok for NA teams. Postponing this match will definitely raise awareness for systematic racism in USA. But I would be pissed if any EU team started virtue signalling for a cause on the other side of the atlantic, mostly irrelevant in our societies. It has already happened with the BLM protests in Copenhagen which (confirmed only) infected 8 people with COVID-19

I have never experienced systematic racism in Denmark. Neither have my brown/black friends. We don't have the same history of opression and colonial subjugation as US. When the first racial minorities (And in the start we only took in the disabled ones) arrived in the 70's everyone was fighting against each other on who could treat them the best and provide the best care. Only racism is so-called "everyday racism" E.G people calling middle easterners "paki", "perker" and danish people being called"potatoes" "ghosts", "pigskins" and mayos and various prejudices being applied to various ethnic groups by people NOT the institutions and government.

Can‘t really comment on the situation in denmark but in germany there is definitely systemic racism. Also not that well versed in danish history so I don‘t know whether your statement regarding systemic racism is true, what I do know is that so many countries in europe have a history of racism and it hasn‘t been abolished. I assure you though that this is not about calling people racist who are in fact not. It‘s about bringing justice to minorities who didn‘t get any for too long

Idk, this smells like something in purpose tbh. They didn't participate in the movement before but now they do? Idk man, this seems weird. US is pretty racist tho, but there's a lot of people using this as an advantage(mostly leftist extremists or leftists/looters who make chaos in the streets with no need whatsoever).

"BLM’s central claim of a race-based disparity in police homicide in the US is not based in fact. While certain aspects of US policing and crime policy are certainly worthy of reform, it is simply not true that black people are at greater risk of being killed by the US police than whites. A post-Ferguson study by Harvard economists found ‘no racial differences in either the raw data or when contextual factors are taken into account’. And while it is true that black citizens as a group in the US are certainly disproportionate victims of violence in total, they are emphatically not the greatest victims of interracial violence."

I agree with you, i've been limited to news or statistics and i dont live in the US so is hard for me to really say if im wrong or right but I completely agree with what you said. Thats why i wanted the source, cause here in argentina the news say "Police hunted down and shot 7 times a black man" and dont even take the time to explain the whole context so I see people trashtalking about the police/black rights without even knowing, then if you come(with no sources) to explain about what happened they say that you are racist or a nazi.

" The conditions of peaceful coexistence between different groups are not to be found by constant measurement against social-justice metrics. No one should deny the reality of racism, but it would be false to imply the situation is worsening or, as the Bishop of Dover recently suggested, that we are experiencing a ‘racism pandemic’. The reality is much more positive. The British Social Attitudes survey shows a consistent decline in racist attitudes on key questions across decades. Introducing an adversarial, US-style racialisation of politics can only serve to reverse this tremendous progress.Inviting us to view everything through the prism of race invites all sorts of racisms to spring up. This is ultimately harmful to society. When BLM supporters talk about a ‘resurgence of the far right’ they are, in part, talking about a reaction against their own racial politics."

I agree. They are both NA teams and it is occurring in NA, therefore I do agree and support them and that it can be played another time. However if it was brought to the EU when such problems are not currently existing or as problematic in the culture, I don't think I would agree with it. There is paying respects and standing with a cause, and then there is virtue signalling that doesn't do anything for the cause and is only companies trying to get good PR. I think the postponement with Chaos and Liquid is definitely acceptable though.

first of all i'd like to stress there is no evidence of Police racism in the shooting in Kenosha hell the guy Jacob Blake who was shot turns out he was wielding a Knife had multiple arrest warrants out on him and had previously assaulted Police Officers before you say " why didn't they Taze him " they did it didn't work the dude was probably on Drugs or something as far as why the Police were there well his own girlfriend actually called the Police on him because he was not supposed to be there and had stolen her keys so heres a summary of how it went down two police officers have their guns drawn on the guy they tell him to stop moving he doesn't listen he keeps walking and then reaches into his car the Police they don't fucking know wth he's got in that car the dude was already armed with a knife could easily have had a gun in there point is if the Police tell you to stop walking STOP FUCKING WALKING

Classic Whataboutism. Just because people care about a social issue doesn't mean they cant care about all of those. You're acting as if supporting BLM means you cant care about oppression in China, North Korea and elsewhere. At least they try to change human rights in general. Most people dont even care about what goes on in their own country.

The nations have to deal with it alone otherwise they will never get better. Or do you think Germany kicked their King and accepts the change if they were forced to do that. Or French revolution would had happen with Spain or UK influences? History learn one thing, you have to do it on your own otherwise you will repeat the mistakes over and over again. Many dictatorship that was ended by other countries lead always to a new dictatorship. And USA has also a lot to learn like many African countries

I think we're talking about two different things: Racism isn't an opinion if you were to refer to specific actions, since what is and isn't reality isn't subject to an opinion. Racism is an opinion when referring to the mindset. The latter of which is political. The former of which is often a political circumstance.

What does it matter if people know what esports is or not? Its still a retard move that doesnt change anything and just ruins the format of the tournament. Just because they protest BLM its okay but if any team would say "Sorry we dont wanna play the game we are gonna go protest against meat-eating" they would probably be disqualified. ESL want to get respect and stay aligned with politics, thats why they accept this behavior. As someone else said in the comments, playing the game and just getting the message through on social media or whatever would have been the same thing.

Why are players bringing politics into a video game? This is just ridiculous counter-strike isn’t part of the government. I don’t like racism but still don’t bring politics in cs. This game is suppose to make us happy, if we had a bad day this would made us happy playing and watching cs.

Nobody in the rest of world cares about your fuckin racist complex. Sport and esport schedule is known and accepted before. They accepted rules of this tournament, now they break them. Disqualification is the only way to show these morons how to behave. Noone gives a damn about their virtue signaling.

Yes, ofc if you live in another country then what goes on in this country shouldnt matter. However, i'm greatful that you're going out of your way to watch NA games like how I watch EU games. I wont try to change your views on this matter, however, the reason why there's riots/protesting going on is because peaceful protests arent working, the government is not going to change unless if we force change. What has this got to do with E-Sports you ask? this, too, is a form of protesting. Many people may disagree or agree with my views, but at the end of the day everyone is entitled to their opinion. Edit: my apologies if there's alot of errors I am using phone rn

First NBA, then this? I can agree with Milwaukee Bucks' decision to protest the thing as there are a lot of Black basketball players but a fucking CSGO tournament? Any other sports I disagree but understand but ESL's decision to postpone the match and not just disqualify CHAOS on this one is beyond stupid.

agree with you that it was a stupid decision but I think the problem is that if ESL had disqualified chaos they would have got a lot of hate from people who support these protests so ESL just probably thought “nah, we are not stepping in this shit, let it be how chaos wants” not to mention that most likely ESL also supports the BLM

MIBR got ESL cologne EU invited over Godsent. But Godsent was the better-ranked team in ESL Ranking, so they should have invited them by their own rules.

???? refusing to play a video game isnt going to make a difference, youre just causing an inconvenience to the teams and everyone involved at cologne. Just give Liquid the win for forfeit if youre going to do this. You couldve made a statement and played the game, wouldve had the same impact.

Can't seem to find it mate Edit: Lol saw your edit. Seriously though, if you think all protesters are looters and hence there should be no protests you are sadly mistaken. Most of the protests are peaceful and for raising awareness towards a real problem. The looters are such an inconsiderable minority that you cannot judge the entire cause on the back of their actions.

They can protest and raise awareness freely as they want. But things like these have nothing to do with sports and esports, this should be just about the sport itself and who is the best, stuff that isn't connected to it shouldn't be brought here.

ever been in a cs game? ever been on an hltv thread? ever played almost any online game ever? hell, i played Among Us (a party game, ffs) today and saw the hard r like 4 times, among many other slurs. racism is incredibly rampant within gaming. clearly they aren't blaming gaming itself for racism; i think you are being a bit obtuse on purpose if that's how you interpreted it.

"ever been in a cs game? ever been on an hltv thread? ever played almost any online game ever?" i was and rarely seen somebody go full edge mode with n-word spamming "i think you are being a bit obtuse on purpose if that's how you interpreted it." I just wanted a clarification. Did they meant like gatekeeping certain games from some ppl because of their skin color? Refusing to pick certain players into a team because of their skin color? Lacking black characters in games? It can be interpreted differently, especially in today's world.

ok, so you admit you've experienced racism in csgo. that's a start at least. it's incredibly common in all 3 scenarios (particularly hltv) that i mentioned; i'm not going to argue things that are overtly obvious, lol and to basically all of your questions; no. that is not the point they are making at all. they are acknowledging the rampant racism in the community in general. from their reddit post: "We're getting a lot of responses about how gaming is a problem. We thought it was obvious, but we'll give you the benefit of the doubt. We see racism everyday in our community, whether it's on twitch chat, HLTV, here on Reddit. We see it and we don't do anything about it. Now is the time for change."
