ESL unveils 2025 circuit; pledges $22m+ investment through 2026

The tournament organizer has announced the location of only four of the seven events it has planned for next year.

ESL Pro Tour 2025 will begin in Katowice

ESL FACEIT Group (EFG) has announced the first details about its 2025 ESL Pro Tour, with five IEM stops and two ESL Pro League events planned for next year. Moreover, EFG has pledged a financial contribution of more than $22 million over the next two years toward the teams and players participating in the circuit, in addition to hospitality expenses.

Without surprise, 2025 will see the return of ESL's two most iconic events, IEM Katowice and IEM Cologne. These are the only Championship-level events, the highest tier of competition in the ESL Pro Tour, planned for 2025.

Despite fears that the ESL Pro League could be discontinued with the end of the partner leagues, EFG has announced that its flagship competition will return next year with two more editions, both of which will take place in Europe. There will be three Masters-level IEM stops, in Dallas, Chengdu, and a third in an as-yet undisclosed city.

Below are the seven events announced by ESL:

Championship-level events:

Poland IEM Katowice - January 29-February 9
Germany IEM Cologne - July 23-August 3

Masters-level events:

Europe ESL Pro League 21 - February 25-March 16 (Location TBD)
Other IEM Spring - April 21-27 (Location TBD)
United States IEM Dallas - May 19-25
Europe ESL Pro League 22 - September 23-October 12 (Location TBD)
China IEM Chengdu - November 3-9

ESL also revealed more details about each event such as the format, slot distribution and qualifiers (or lack thereof).

ESL Pro League underwent the only major format change. The event will boast 24 teams (down from 32 in the past two years) and feature a Major-like format with two Swiss stages.

A more significant shift can be seen in how the participating teams will be decided. ESL has largely shifted away from qualifiers and will rely on the Valve Regional Standings to determine all participants of IEM Katowice, Spring, Cologne and Chengdu. Only IEM Dallas and the two Pro League seasons will boast qualifiers, for about half of the field.

"The EPT for Counter-Strike 2 is the definition of EFG’s commitment to fostering a fruitful competitive environment and continually nourishing Counter-Strike’s heritage, as we’ve done since 2000," said Marc Winther, Director Game Ecosystems - Counter-Strike, at ESL FACEIT Group.

"With a circuit that spans multiple continents and integrates diverse levels of competition, we are excited to further fuel opportunities for world-class teams and passionate fans alike.”

EFG has another slot on the calendar locked in (August 20-24), which is expected to be next year's iteration of the Esports World Cup. The tournament organizer said that additional details about the events, as well as the complete breakdown of the $22 million financial contribution, will be announced later.

The ticket sale for IEM Katowice will begin on October 22 at 15:00 here. Tickets for IEM Cologne will go on sale exactly 48 hours later here.

I don't even live in the country so I don't care, but genuine question, why does it matter for you as an spectator if there is or not an event there? Is it only because of the unfavourable timezone?

Most people here dont like IEM Rio due to the local fans. They only support the BR teams competing, and are dead silent in games with no brazilians. That gives an inferior experience to the at home viewer. I guess they picked the wrong place to host the event. Rio is not particularly passionate for the game as other big cities in Brazil might be.

The last blast event had a crowd of like 50 people... I know there are complaints about a lot of things, I just don't know if these complaints alone justify the "protests" against the event. That's why I'm asking for insight specifically from someone who is not brazilian xD

Oh, I see. But even as a br, I think it is justifiable, unfortunately. Even tho the blast event had less people, the arena was full, considering its size. It is kinda sad to see the arena sorta empty in the final of a S tier event. Seems like a lack of respect from the fans; as if they dont care at all about the game, or the players that came from everywhere around the world to compete. And we know that most actualy think that way, and prefer to stay outside, in the watch paty, than inside. I dont judge them, but i understand those who does.

You wouldn’t go to the stadium to watch a football game if your team isn’t playing. Even if you love the sport, in the best case, you’d watch it from home. I don't see why they expect CS to be any different. EU fans aren’t necessarily more passionate; EU teams are international, with players from at least 15 different countries in the playoffs. If you travel internationally to attend an event, you're more likely to stay until the end. That wasn't the case for the Rio audience, it was mostly local. Simple as that.

As a local, I do understand all your points, and see their value. But looking through the lens of an outsider, I do see why they would prefer it to be hosted in a less biased place: because the matches of their prefered teams would be more exciting, with people on the audience cheering along with them at home. It is unfortunate for us tho, since ESL said it wont return, but their reasons make sense to me.

No one know (and no one cares), but Rio is flopped. If IEM comes to São Paulo, you should see a true Tier SS+ event with insane final. Brazil is a big country, and fly to Sao Paulo is easiest compared to Rio. They have more infraestructure and security too.

they should've switched pro league and kato dates. it would have been a better ramp up to the season, with epl having many matches at the start of the season and kato at the mid point of the season.

that was the case before, not anymore. teams will make changes after majors which is at the end of the seasons now. so after major, they have a 3 week break then a bootcamp with blast bounty and then straight to kato? how is that fun when all the teams that have made changes recently have to ramp up for kato inside of a bootcamp and an online event.

After the end of partnerships we all thought the scene would become super open while its quite the contrary in fact. No more open/closed/RMRs for the majors and everything being decided on Valve rankings (they didnt reset anything so teams who got their points with invites are advantaged).

In 2024, the ESL Pro Tour events were as follows: - IEM Katowice - 1.000.000 $ - IEM Chengdu - 250.000 $ - ESL Pro League Season 19 - 750.000 $ - IEM Dallas - 250.000 $ - IEM Cologne - 1.000.000 $ - ESL Pro League Season 20 - 750.000 $ - IEM Rio - 250.000 $ If we combine just that, that's 4.250.000 $. If we add in the ESL Challenger events, that number jumps to 4.55 Million. Challenger Leagues on top mean 5.15 Million, give or take a few thousand. Impact League on top means another 323K so 5.478.000 $. Add in Cash Cups every so often and you should come out to about 5.500.000 $ spent a year. With each year receiving 11 Million Dollars each, depending on how the money is allocated, this means at least a doubling of investment per year, in some tournaments it will be less, in others more.

damn, if cologne and katowice will have bigger prize pool than majors that'd be kinda funny. hopefully that will push valve to increase their ones as well

In theory that's the logical consequence. Majors would need to be a prize pool of 5 Million though and that will be tough to justify if ESL spend 11 Million on just prize pools for themselves and PGL already spend 5 Million + the money for CS2 Asia Champs. BLAST has not yet disclosed their prize pools while StarLadder allocated a Million, Fissure about 2.25 Million, Skyesports 2 Million, YaLLa 1.2 Million and Thunderpick 850.000. Whoever would need to finance the Major prize pool alongside Valve is about to have a huge bill come rolling towards them.

EU logic = if there are no fans for Europeans, the championship is bad. The problem is not IEM rio, you Europeans are insufferable and think that everywhere has to have fans for you. I was in the arena, and yes, there were fans for vitality, navi, heroic, etc. But on the stream, the sound of the arena was "muffled".
