FISSURE Playground 2The MongolZ beat G2 to reach semi-finals in Belgrade
The Mongolian squad made it 2-1 on Ancient after a 13-11 win on their Mirage map pick was followed by a G2 victory on Dust2.
The MongolZ beat G2 in the first FISSURE Playground 2 quarter-final of the day, edging their Mirage map pick 13-11 and falling on Dust2 7-13 before closing the series out on Ancient 13-9.
The series promised to be an intense one, and it delivered, although The MongolZ took a hefty lead on their Mirage pick, going 7-1 on the attack on the way to a 9-3 half.
In the end, though, it came down to the wire, as G2 also excelled on the attack, bringing it to an 11-11 stalemate before running out of gas on the comeback trail.
Dust2 got off to a similarly one-sided start, with G2 taking an 8-0 lead on the attack before The MongolZ got on the board. From there on out, Garidmagnai "bLitz" Byambasuren and company made it competitive with a seven-round streak, but it was eventually brought to a swift end before the Mongolians could tie it up.
From there, G2 took control of procedures, winning three rounds on the retake and two by elimination to string five together and force a decider map, 13-7.
After a close first half on Ancient that went the way of The MongolZ, 7-5, an aggressive T side by the Asian squad put G2 on the defensive early on.
Down 11-9, G2 had a great chance to turn things around against a forcebuy, especially with Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač turning a 4vs5 into a 4vs3 with a double, but it all came crumbling down after Azbayar "Senzu" Munkhbold got a double of his own.
The MongolZ then won out 13-9 to secure a spot in the semi-finals, where they now await the winners of Aurora vs. Liquid in the top half of the single-elimination bracket.
