fnatic dispute EG win - Report

fnatic yesterday filed a dispute against Evil Geniuses, claiming that the Americans had ghosted in last and deciding round of the match.

Upon return to their hotel last night, fnatic watched a video filmed by the Swedish news site fragbite.se, which according the dispute filed, shows Danny "fRod" Montaner giving Tomi "lurppis" Kovanen instructions in his 1-versus-1 situation against fnatic's Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg, based on him having the option to look at a large projection screen on the right side of the stage (in front of fnatic), showing Lindberg as he moved around.

fnatic returned to the tournament venue and filed a dispute to the WEM organizers, but it was rejected as such a dispute is supposed to be filed no later than 5 minutes after the game. The WEM rulebook states the following:

Official decision : Any reversal of a decision is not allowed. However a protest can be made by the team leader or team manager only. The protest should be given within 5 minutes after the game and should provide evidence. If the officials agree with the protest, then a rematch is allowed.

The rulebook also states the following rule regarding ghosting, or as they describe it, screening:

Cheating or Screening:  Looking at the opponents screen or viewing the live broadcast in order to gain an advantage is prohibited. If it's necessary disqualification can be given.

According to ESEA News, Danny fRoD Montaner received a warning from WEM organizers, for touching his mouse and keyboard when he was dead. The ruling of this could only have been given after fnatic had showed their video to the WEM organizers, as no organizers approached Montaner to give him a warning after the match. The WEM rulebook states the following:

Out: : Player should take off hands from mouse and keyboard after fragged. Players can't talk about game after being eliminated. However, he can cheer on his team players.

Today, the Editor in Chief over at fnatic.com has uploaded a video, stating the evidence fnatic had gathered and showed to the WEM organizers, check it out below.

WEM is not totally without fault either, players and teams should never have the opportunity to ghost, thus locating a large projection screen in the viewing-field of the teams and not covering it properly, instead of placing it behind them, where potential ghosting would be a lot more obvious, seems like a very odd choice. Also it seems odd, that the WEM organizers penalized Montaner, but rejected fnatic's dispute due to the 5 minutes rule.

It is not the first time potential ghosting is brought up at a WEM event. In 2008 the Chinese team of Dragon received a warning for ghosting against the Poles from MYM, a match Dragon won 16-12.

When Evil Geniuses will show up at the venue today, for their match against Natus Vincere, we will seek to get a comment on this matter from the American team.

I'm not condoning fRod's actions, but the organizer should not put a live POV screen that players can look at without turning around 180 degrees -- it's stupid. It's like playing split-screen Halo and getting pissed at your opponent for "looking at your screen" even though it's in plain view. Humans will take whatever advantage they have an opportunity for. If you remove the opportunity, you remove the advantage. Again, this is still wrong on fRod's part, but I can understand where in the heat of the moment, during the last round of an international match that could send you home, a fallible human made a mistake, and spoke when not allowed. It is also possible that he heard things and didn't see them. We don't know where fRod's eyes were looking -- and this would make it a lot less offensive of a violation. fRod did the wrong thing, but I don't think he should be completely written off for this indefinitely. People make mistakes. And for the people comparing this to "Chinese ghosting" -- that was way worse. That was a situation where announcers were announcing a game live in a language that only one team could understand.

well, not all venues allow the use of vent and/or mumble, so teams have to communicate the old fashioned way. Goal disputed.

When fRoD is "looking" at the screen he may well be tilting his head to hear better like I sometimes do. When he says "He's on top", he's probably mentioning lurppis... "Off Off Off" Means he's saying to lurppis to get off there. "He's coming out" may be instinct altough I think that is not fRoD's voice + They could've known he was out because when lurppis went to the big box near the bomb, he obviously couldn't see f0rest so the only chance was that he was rotating...

Theres a lot of wealthy people here that live way better then you do, so becareful what you say cause he might even have enough money for you to wipe your ass with it. Fucking ignorant. Out: : Player should take off hands from mouse and keyboard after fragged. Players can't talk about game after being eliminated. However, he can cheer on his team players. This is what the rulebook states. clearly Frod did not behave as required, therefore he did not stick to the rules. However, noone complained in time, and therfore he is not punished, which is a pitty, unfair but according to the rules, correct.

since when in 5 minutes you can have access to these kind of content? honestly in 5 minutes you can't even organise a clear statement to report something. Specially at "professional" level. this kind of behaviour by EG reminds me the lame lan-parties that everyone is looking at others monitors and kid stuff like that. And this reminds me also that case of KF3 because of the duckwalk vs the koreans. The refs that are behind the teams are stupid and aren't paying attention to what they are doing. So yeah EG should be kicked of the tournament. After this I lost all the respect that I had for them.

I am not saying the rules are good like they are, I'm just stating that noone behaved as needed in order to apply the rules. I am only saying that everything was handled according to the rules. In my opinion, I totally agree with you, there's a referee for a reason, and he should just do his job because, as you stated, 5 minutes is nowhere near enough time.

I feel like maybe some admins on this site should refrain from getting into arguments if they want to appear objective lol. I also highly doubt lurppis even got the chance to make a decision based off of what fRoD said, considering he made it clear what play he intended to make the entire time, and never like doubled back because of new information or anything, not to mention there is always some delay on vent/mumble and what fRoD said and lurppis killing f0rest was like a half second apart.

i do believe it had some kind of impact though. it looks like lurppis were going for one type of play but then suddenly changes his mind, ducks and strafes towards the opposite direction of where he was going. and if they used mumble, it's pretty much free of delay.

Its not like using wallhack. If you have the a screen in front of your eyes telling you what the opponent does you are tempted to tell it to your teammate. I am sure more than 50% of the cs players would do it if they had the chance.

So if you were playing against one of the most renowned cs teams in the world, being the underdog, and an opportunity came up to beat them you're saying, you would just let opportunity walk in the middle of the room and do a little dance and watch it walk the fuck right out of the room than take that opportunity and come out with an upset? If you say that, then you're not a competitive being sir.

It has nothing to do with being competetive. By your logic, anyone that doesn't use wallhack in online matches isn't competetive, since it's pretty much as easy downloading wallhack as looking at that monitor.

blatant wallhacking isn't an opportunity...basically what you're saying is if we were both playing basketball and I overheard what plays you guys were using you would say I was cheating? I used my resources to beat you...just as when the event staff that put a huge screen for the gamers to see was a resource...sure it's cheap but the opportunity to beat a top 3 cs team is in your face who wouldn't take that?

Im too lazy to argue seriously. EG deserved it especially Frod and Nothing. Eg never caused problems and they always played fair, in every tournament they participated. Even Frod talked, lurppis wasnt attentioned to hear what he said becouse he was already closer f0rest and he was hearing his footsteps and already knowing what f0rest was doing so cya.

They have been fcking awful the whole carrier with fair playing... Dunno what tournament it was but fnatic was 1on3 with lurppis and 2 or all of them lagged out, and he won the round. Fnatic asked for a new round, but eg thought that they had that round so the round never got replayed.

I haven't been to an event in about a year now but uhh, in Euro events, more importantly, international events, there used to be no rules against ghosting. At one point America was the only country running rules about talking or shouting after the the screen went black. This was always a problem when Euro teams would ghost at CPL's. So, maybe you newbies should do a little research before crucifying a player on something that every single one of your favorite players did, and probably still does. in this thread: fanboys who only started following CS in 2008.

Oh please, plenty of people who know the various languages will of course watch the videos, it isn't like Europe has hidden languages.. E.g. any Swedish, Danish, English, German or Norwegian talking team could be "busted" by any random Dane, so stop using that excuse, he looks to have cheated, and got caught, I do not see how that is forgivable..

Well if ghosting is so common it is funny that fnatic chose to dispute this one, and not do it all the time, what changed? It isn't like this is the first match they have lost.. Also normally EG are happy to cry about how unfairly they are being cheated, how come they don't call out some of the ghosting either? Prove that everyone ghosts all the time, till then this whole defense of your player makes no sense.

You hit the nail right on the head with your first reply, nomad. fnatic had proof. They didn't take so long to dispute this because they had to fish through six hours of tape to prove something that they had felt wronged by during the match, they spent six hours feeling sorry for themselves (like every team does after losing a lower bracket match) and found something that could give them a chance to keep their WEM run alive.

No, they had to wait for fragbite to upload the video, you see fnatic and fragbite is not the same, fnatic is a team, fragbite is a newssite, that most likely wished to edit their video before putting it online, therefore there was a time lag.. fnatic most likely acted pretty fast as soon as they realized just how obvious the cheating was..

Well, if we're going to argue about enforcing the ghosting rules, why shouldn't the 5 minute dispute rule stand up? Now we should be bending some rules but not others? You see that seems like a real opportunistic slant, nomad.

I'd say that the 5 minute rule makes it impossible to enforce the ghosting rule, therefore I think the 5 minute rule is what needs to go, not the ghosting rule.. Also it should certainly be possible to punish a player even after the match, just like it is done in football if video evidence show they did something bad that the referee did not catch.. Sure let EG continue on in the tournament as the protest came late (however, as it was impossible to give it in time this doesn't make much sense, but I doubt you'll agree on that, being totally biased and all..), but then at least punish either fRod or the team, e.g. by a reduction in prize money, or by disqualifying them from next years events..

As far as the WEM rulebook states, the ghosting rule is a bit more of an admin discretion typed rule. Most of the time, ghosting is a warning typed situation, and if a player is warned, and continues to ghost, it can result in a DQ. Unfortunately, this is the problem of the human element in rule enforcement. When it comes down to the admin discretion, you're at the mercy of the admin, or referee, or umpire, or whatever your rule official title of choice is. A glance of the WEM rulebook shows that this could have escalated to a rematch, but that's about it. Most of the rules rely on a player accumulating a number of warnings from an admin before the player is DQ'd.

Sorry, didn't mean to pluck your ego chord. Either way, show me a team that doesn't ghost to this day. fnatic made a desperate attempt, it didn't pass, it happens. All teams do it on early exits, it's part of the game. This is no different than BJ Penn complaining that GSP had Vaseline on his shoulders in the UFC a few years back. You fight hard to win, try what you can to get another chance. I'm sure the fnatic players are over it by now, even if their site isn't.

No I'm a veteran in the community with 6+ years of experience at LAN events that's wondering what is up with the revisionist history, that's all. I remember a time when this debate was at clear opposite sides of the spectrum, where Euro players were extremely frustrated with the US tournaments anti-ghosting rules. It's just funny that this has turned out to be such a big deal all things considered. If the roles were completely reversed, and EG was a team that came from a region where ghosting was allowed, this would be a thread complaining about American's stupid rules against ghosting, calling EG out for being hypocrites. Unfortunately, the people in this thread either don't have the CS knowledge to know the history on the subject, or they don't have the mettle to stand up and say it. The ghosting is against the rules at WEM, and it sucks how this all went down, with fRoD ending up on camera, but anyone who thinks fnatic didn't ghost that entire match are fooling themselves. Most importantly, people should know the history on this subject before they crucify a player and attack him personally for it.

Your defense of the actions MAKE NO SENSE, as the anti-ghosting rules have been standard for CS the past many years, are you still living in 2005 or what? The European teams might have bitched and screamed to hell and back, but it changes nothing, the rules were broken, so this makes no sense unless you argue that the rule is bad and should be removed?

I wouldn't have sat at CPL's calling Munoz out for trying to pull attention off of CS and the team based games in favor of Quake and duel games if I allowed myself to be intimidated by Internet credentials.

It's relevant when people are making it an issue of "USA players are scum". It's especially funny seeing SK fans talking about hating fRoD for this when XeqtR famously ghosted years ago under the SK banner. I'm not justifying fRoD. Excuse me if that's not clear. I played CS prior to 2008, well since about 2001 infact. I was never on the "scene" of pro CS as it were - but certainly attended local LAN events and a few in europe. Ghosting wasn't allowed at those? I've never thought ghosting was allowed. I never attended CPL, so obviously I can't comment as to why people supposedly ghosted so much there. But it certainly didn't (or at least, was unheard of to be a big problem) where I played. Still, I think Lurppis would have won the round anyway. fnatic are right to dispute, it was turned down. End of. Just hope EG can knock Na`Vi out.

BUT WHAT THE FUCK?!?! Are you seriously trying to teach people about ghosting? Ghosting isn't talking when you're dead - just so that you know. Everybody knows that this happened at CPL for several years, mainly because they were the only tournament to have that retarded rule, thus the Euro's were used to speak even after they died. This case is a whole different matter. Not only does fRoD break the rules of the tournament, but he also looks up on the projector to see where his opponent is and passes that information on. It's not a slip of mind, it's a damn choice he takes. I can accept that someone who has only been on the scene since 2008 or something similar can be off in this case, but honestly weenus, I thought better of you. How can you seriously defend blatant cheating? He could just aswell have been looking directly at f0rest's screen or have been an observer on the server, because that's the information he is passing on. And please don't give me bs about fRoD not loooking at the projector. How would he possibly have the knowledge he is passing on unless he watches f0rest's POV. When I saw the incident at first, I thought fRoD was only passing on information that he had obtained before he had blackscreen, and I applauded the decision by the admins to void the protest. It's a fair protest, but games shouldn't be turned over by tiny rulebreaks that both teams might be guilty of. Having seen the video again and again, and seeing how fRoD watch f0rest's POV, I cannot say that this is anything but blatant cheating which should be punished. Bad setup, yes, but even worse behavior. And this is what makes me the most angry. If you have actually seen the youtube-video, you are trying to neglect what fRoD did. I really thought you'd be more intelligent and mature than that.

Someone should go over the full demo and make a mini movie of any "suspicious" rounds...I highly DOUBT that fRoD decided to wait till the 3rd overtime to ghost, and who's to say he was the only member of EG doing it...hes furthest from the projector also I highly doubt that fnatic was ghosting because they don't need to cheat - to win.

haha, cyrax, the bigscreen monitor is allways like that. In like every event. What I mean is, it's not Chinas fault that fRod was such a dumbass and watching that bigscreen. Idiot. And ye, he could see that screen. But he wasn't forced to touch his mouse with his retarded finger and then ghost? If I were in charge of EG I would clearly kick him after this stupid "misstake".

Well. If you're on site and standing next to the computers they're playing on it's not that hard to realize that ghosting is amazingly easy with the stage-setup. So maybe just tell the organizer ghosting is possible. They likely can't rearrange the whole stage but you can have personnel/referees watch for this specific thing. Or have one of your own people watch for it. And don't give me any "We believed this game was played with honest players and didn't think this was necessary.".

"We believed this game was played with honest players and didn't think this was necessary.". yes I give u that, because at that level of competition, after so many years of experience frod has, how could he be able to do something like that? because he knew deep down he's not good enough to beat them in a fair game, like most ppl said before, it is most likely eg (at least frod given the evidence) was ghosting against fnatic in previous rounds... now ofc, fnatic shouldn't have let this match reach to triple OT, fnatic didn't play as good as they can, they obviously didn't practice enough for this tournament, add to that n0thing's outstanding performance,at least imo, and lurppis applied some rly nice tactics there, so I agree that EG deserved to advance in the event, but what frod made deserves a bigger punishment than a simple warning, because what he did it's simply one of the most pathetic ways of cheating. anyway, punishment or not, I just hope the CS community won't let this be forgotten, and if the EG organization has some self-respect, (which i'm hoping they have) they should kick frod from their cs squad

Wow! This whole situation is so wrong in so many ways. Yes, it is immensely stupid to have a screen with no delay where a team can see what the other team is doing. But even so, if indeed frod was saying what forest was doing, that is a clear cut violation of the rules and quite possibly cost fnatic the game. Therefor it should be punished I think. The five minute rule is just moronic. What do the organizers expect people to be able to do in five minutes? Having said all this, I certainly hope that all this is a misunderstanding and that he didn't cheat.

In such situations when you are dead and under that pressure, it is just natural to glance up at the monitor, nothing bad to do really when you're dead, but to actually REPORT HIS POSITION IN REAL TIME to his teammates doesn't really happen just like that. At that point froD had made a concious decision that he would cheat. Bad rules in this tourney might be one thing(5 min rule), but he sholudn't go unpunished for something like this in the long run.

It's not a Famas, it's USP and AK which f0rest switched between. Also at the end of the video, you can easily tell that the screen goes sideways as f0rest dies, and EG jump out of their seats instantly. It's most definitely f0rest's POV. Judging by the video fnatic made, it shouldn't be unclear to anyone that frod indeed fed information to lurppis. Whether he was able to hear him and/or react to it, we'll never know if Tomi doesn't speak out. Which is probably the smartest move to make by EG, let frod take the heat for his actions, as anyone can't really prove Tomi doing anything wrong. It's not like he could have stopped frod from doing it. Analyzing the logic behind f0rest's or Tomi's actions is circumstantial at best, f0rest is known for making crazy and crazy smart moves and he could have gone either way with the defuse. From his perspective, he probably got scared by Tomi's footsteps and decided to go for the kill, or didn't even think about powerdefuse. For Tomi's part, if the doesn't confess to anything, we'll never know if the decided to risk the possibility of direct defuse, or if the indeed heard the information from frod. Either way, nothing can be proved against him. All in all, Frod should definitely be the one getting flamed over doing what he did, not lurppis or rest of the team. And when your at it, aim a few insults toward the organization for putting up a screen at that angle. Jeez, behind the players is already bad enough, but at the side facing them?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say with that comment. If you're simply saying that we shouldn't criticize lurppis as he had no influence over fr0ds actions your right. That is true. Although I do think you can still hold him morally accountable for keeping quiet about the cheating - if he indeed heard what fr0d said that is. If on the other hand you're trying to say that they shouldn't punish the entire team of EG because we can't prove or know that lurppis acted on the information illegally passed on by fr0d than that just doesn't cut it. We know that the team (fr0d specifically) cheated and we know that that illegal action(s) very well could have decided the entire game. There can't be any doubt as to EG winning the match fair and square when we know that illegal actions were performed that could have decided the outcome of the game. I think you have to rule on the asumption that they did. It would, of course, have been another thing entirely if we couldn't say whether any cheating occured at all. In that case, obviously they would have had to be asumed to be inocent and thus not punished. So, as far as I'm concerned, this all boils down to how certain one can be of fr0d doing the things he's accused of doing. My five cents.

I think you got me right. It's not like lurppis is going to throw out his headphones shouting "DON'T TELL ME WHAT'S HAPPENING THAT'S CHEATING". Nor he is going to admit to cheating after winning against fnatic on third overtime. There's simply no one on the face of this earth who's made of such high morale. I know it's hard to punish just one player. They might have to do it internally in EG organization, because WEM's only option at this point is to ban the player and/or the team. Maybe EG should cut frod's personal cut of the money, that might sting the most on him. Please don't take the plural form into this conversation, we only have potential proof of one incident, and I'd like to limit the conversation to that. If we start questioning every move/round of the game, we'll be here for the whole night :)

As for the use of plural; what I was referring to wasn't other instances not known, but the fact that he broke (at least) two rules in the situation destribed above. The two rules broken are mentioned in the article above. 1) he did not remove his hands from his equipment (no not that equipment, you perve!) right after he died and, 2) that he gave away information about what f0rest was doing after having died. Both are illegal and they are also two separate actions (duh!=). All this asumes that he is indeed guilty of course.

This sucks, BUT truly you cant really blame frod. The setup is so bad, if they chose to place a big screen of the enemies pov right next to them, its so hard not to look at it once in a while, so I would rather blame WEM, and I am sure we have other players who ghosted too this WEM, only frod getting caught though.

Yes, of course you can blame frod. It wasn't the organisers that made him 1) brake a rule that said that when your dead you are to remove your hands from your mouse and keyboard and 2) brake the rule saying that you can't talk about the game when your dead. Didn't you read the article above? All this asumes that he indeed did do what he is acused of, of course.

If fRoD can see a screen from the scene, that's mean the organization isn't good.. Now iam okay for the warning!! but they have to check if a screen can be see from the players or not.. maybe others did it and we don't know.!!

The correct conclusion: (read it all) 1. EG already had a tie, so lurpiss can take risk. 2. f0rest would've heard him coming and knew he had to get off the bomb in order to have a chance at taking it to another overtime, the bomb wasn't ticking fast, so this decision for f0rest to do this is expected, regardless. 3. lurpiss began to run in and cover the bomb before fr0d stated it was a fake, meaning he had already committed to taking the fight. 4. lurpiss has a very huge chance, and an expected chance, that f0rest would come off, as f0rest already knows he has to take the fight or have a higher risk in losing (remember this) 2&4 +. f0rest also knows lurpiss just has to tap crouch to see if f0rest is still on the bomb, f0rest also knows that in order to not have lurpiss kite him around the site, f0rest has to hunt directly, and in this case directly is going around to go into platform. Lurpiss knows this as would most top players so its easy for him to hold the angle and out shoot f0rest to win. 6. It is heavily WEM's fault, putting a ghost screen in view of the players is completely dumb, and ghosting and cheating chance is increased, and problems like this is not what WEM should want. 7. It is also fr0ds fault, ofc, for ghosting, however, as I have explained it is quite easy for lurpiss to play exactly the way he did, as the chances are ridiculously high as to what f0rest would do, and the risk is very low. 9. Yes the video supports the ghosting, its made obvious, but points 6&7 remain, and they are extremely supported. 10. fnatic are correct to dispute. Nothing should be done in the place of either removing frod/lurpiss or EG, at the most, if anything, a % of prize money should be deducted, but even that shouldnt be over 10% of it. 11. EG DID play better overall, even if that includes some fantastic individual performances, I still believe they deserve the win. I feel that the ghosting is about 20% valid to the last round (even if lurpiss came back out of the box after fr0d fed information, he might've just gone behind the box to cover himself for the flash). I'm not sticking up for EG or fnatic, I'm just putting the facts out there. 12. Just because this one has evidence, this does not mean that fnatic or EG or even any other team in the tournament did or didn't use this same ghosting throughout the match, previous matches and future matches if WEM doesn't act. (SK vs Navi anyone, for example?)

this is quite accurate only if you are assuming it was the only time an EG player ghosted during the game, which is HIGHLY unlikely. could have happened every round for all we know.

Competely agree, aswell could've all the other teams, for example now NaVi vs EG 2nd half pistol just now, mark peeked exactly after dboorn stopped looking at where mark was, resulted in 2 1 bull hs and an easy pistol for Na'Vi. YAY FOR CONTROVERSY oh and the winning round, Edwards random prefire before the remaining 2 EG players came out, knowing they were there, or did he? hahahhaa gg

you are wrong. 1. Consider that they got tie because of ghosting whole the match. I'm sure that if you watch the whole match u will find a lot more action like that. 2. Ofc lurrpis has upper hand. Bomb was down and 1vs1. It doesnt change a fact that he knew when f0rest stopped defusing or run to defuse a bomb. 3. Yes he run, becouse he was told that f0rest was defusing. Then hide behind the box when frod said 'off' and waited for f0rest when ford said that he is coming. 4. lurpiss has a very huge chance, and an expected chance, that f0rest would defuse 5. this is just bullshit. They never think like that. There were studies about players brains. They minimalize use of left side of their brains. This is instinct 6&7. Ofc its WEM fault but also frod fault, and propably whole team. This is not just about this one action. This is also about whole match. This one clip shows us proof that they were ghosting. Further analisys will show us how often they did. 8 - you missed that one O_o 9 - that kind of behavior is unexcusable. Not an argument. 10 - VERY big money cut should be done. Same goes with Loord. 11- just look at that match. I honestly during watching that game though that they had been ghosting. The way that they were throwing granades, waiting for fnatic guys was just insane. There were so many strange situations... So overall - they played better because the got crucial informations from main screen. The only question is how weak they are that they need 3 OT to win that. NaVi just have answered... so did WMF a day before. 12 - worthless argument. We are talking about fnatic - EG match. We can talk about NaVi - SK in different thread.

Another think that i'd want to point out is, why would fragbite shoot from slap bang correct angle, so close to fr0d? Accidental? Maybe. But one logical explanation i can think of, is that they saw/heard him screening at some point in the game before as well and decided to bust him. Sounds plausible?

Well, I have to say. Why blame frod? Of course he is watching the screen when it's placed in a position like that. Ye, he shouldn't have done it, of course not. It's not fair, etc. But the fact remains that competetors do what ever they can to win, and sometimes it's not just. But it dosn't hide the fact that most people do. I do not support frods actions, I'm just saying, if you where in the same position, you would do the same. Or most people would = )

And defending frod is just weird, watching the screen is one thing. But the rule is YOU CANT REPORT when you're dead. And he did, while watching the screen. Most people wouldn't do that, because it's cheating which might lead to disqualification from the tournament and having fans turn against the team in general. Frod is an asshole which is almost as much of an indesputible fact as the failed organisation by WEM.

Yeah #301 you are correct in observing that the ghosting probably didn't have much impact in the game. However, the impact of the ghosting really shouldn't be relevant. He broke the rules, whether it turned the round around or not shouldnt matter.

I think people are forgetting that some years ago, you could get penalized for a simple crouch walk during a game. would such a thing make a real difference ? probably not, but still, rules had to be applied. of course they are being applied here too since you only have 5 minutes to fill a protest, so nothing can be done. it's more about ethic and honor.

It was a close match... Both teams played even match, better team won. More over U can't 100 % proof the ghosting, it just looks like frod is looking into his teammate monitor... Worst thing, Nixon is kinda supporting fnatic when it isn't a clear case... :/// Subjective media by HLTV. EG just lost to Na'Vi so it's all over anyways.

The photo? That is of a spectator, and it was a bit of fun, if you think that is subjective, well then maybe HLTV.org isn't the site for you.. We report the news, just as we did in this case, we even tried to get a comment from EG, but they refused to comment.. We have passed no judgment, we have just presented the case with the evidence that exists.

Really, I was watching under f0rest's POV when this happened during the live match, and I was really surprise when lurrpis wasn't scared of f0rest went for a full defuse and chose to wait and mark him at that position.

Probably. But we can consider that the Evil Geniuses is a makeshift team. Compared to players who have a huge history and even greater skill, I can only deduce that the f0rest would pretend that it would Defuse the c4 lurppis would aim at, and f0rest would kill him.

Ghosting or not, Frod failed to play by the rules and for that he should have been punished RIGHT IN THAT MOMENT by any referee attending. According to the rules a player must not talk to his teammates about the ongoing round, except for cheering. Out: : Player should take off hands from mouse and keyboard after fragged. Players can't talk about game after being eliminated. However, he can cheer on his team players.

Great moment for G7 to step in and make themselves useful by giving punishments to players who violate event rules (for example banning fRoD for x events/matches) and to make rules which all CS events should apply.

To all those saying things like "it isn't frod's fault, the screen was placed so that he could see it" or "other teams do ghosting too": what the fuck? That's just retarded logic, nothing else. If I go out tonight and shoot someone in the face with a gun, I shouldn't be punished just because "I could do it" and "others have done it too"? After reading some of the comments, I also suppose that some users don't really know the meaning of ghosting. It is, and has been, forbidden FOR AGES.

"We have beaten fnatic before without cheating/ghosting and certainly didn't need to cheat this time to do it. If someone was recording a video of fnatic playing you could see them turning to their teammates as well (therefore "looking at the big screen" as they claim Danny did) and talking while dead for sure, that doesn't mean anything at all and we didn't cheat/ghost by any means." -lurppis

Come on everyone, how can you resist from looking at the screen? In such an important situation like this, I'm sure 99% of you would've done the same. Also, I wouldn't really call them cheaters... I mean what frod did was wrong, but the definition of cheating imo is what players like Sally, Delpan and many others have done.

Even though it was wrong, I don't believe that fRoD peeking at the bigscreen, was the biggest issue. The real issue was fRoD passing on the information that he observed, since this is not allowed after being killed. He wasn't even allowed to touch his mouse or keyboard though he clearly did it.

To me its just an error from the referees. They should have seen it and reacted right away. Just think of football (DONT COMPARE FOOTBALL WITH GAMING!!111 - Fuck off, much more money in there and yet errors are being made), we know afterwards that Thierry Henry got France into World Cup with the help of his hand, we also know that the ball passed goal line in England-Germany, but the goal was never accepted. The five-minute rule is there for a reason. And usually they are for the situations where you have noticed during the game for example that the opponent might have defused through the box. That's something you can tell RIGHT after the match. Or that they might have used a bug flash or whatever. But coming the next day and claiming a rematch is of course understandable but it wouldn't make any sense to actually play it. People make mistakes.

Unfair, but that BIG SCREEN is also a BIG MISTAKE by organization. Actually fRoD didn’t look at f0rest’s screen. It wasn’t the first time that it happens and also will not be the last! I don’t know what the rules says about it but I guess that if the screen is there nothing prevents the players from looking… it’s not FAIR but probably not forbidden. fnatic should’ve gotten pissed off with the organization that set up badly the screens!

What are you talking about, of course it's 'forbidden' to look at the huge goddamn screen showing where the other team is. Were you just trying to troll?

haha no, I mean... I know it's forbidden but the screen wasn't behind them, hidden or just out of sight... it was in front of their eyes so... what prevents them from looking??? It is like a gf of your best friend naked in front of you and telling "come on, touch me" what would you do? Like I said, not fair but the biggest mistake came from the organization!

tell me what you would do if you died, looked over to your team mates screen, and saw a large projection screen IN PLAIN SITE right next to your team mate's head displaying the actions of the last remaining enemy who has a good chance at winning the round? Also add in the fact that there is thousands of dollars at stake, and it was a game deciding round in an extremely close match... Yes... I'm sure only a scum bag american would do such a thing. Get a clue. WEM was a terribly ran tournament from the beginning if you were paying the least bit attention from the start - which im sure most of you weren't.

the rulebook says "Any reversal of a decision is not allowed. However a protest can be made by the team leader or team manager only. The protest should be given within 5 minutes after the game and should provide evidence. If the officials agree with the protest, then a rematch is allowed." did they protest 5 minutes later? no, they didn't (i know that it's a stupid dispotition but fnatic should knew it) i think that fnatic read the rulebook, and ofcourse they accepted it, so... why do they protest about it? if they were not agree with the rules... why did they accept it?!!!!?

The organizers are the ones to blame. Seriously who puts a freaking 100 inch screen in front of the players which shows the actual game and what the enemy is doing? Sure it was wrong from fRoD to actually inform his teammate(if he did that, you can't really tell from the video imo) but it was mostly the organizers fault.

Danny "fRod" Montaner giving Tomi "lurppis" Kovanen instructions in his 1-versus-1 situation against fnatic's Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg, based on him having the option to look at a large projection screen on the right side of the stage (in front of fnatic), showing Lindberg as he moved around. I think the organization is a total fail u cant put a big screen at the range of sight of the players and the 5min is more economical because u cant rollback a game making lose money to the sponsors. Also i would not judge frod because any person who plays cs seriously knows that in those moments of pressure at the 25th round is really hard to evade to try to take an advantage with the big monitor around there...

Sorry admins, the reply button won’t work right now #547 638 and 642. Well, I don’t agree with frod dude. But how he’d look and wouldn’t speak? It’s a big championship, if they had lost they would come back home… they are fighting for much money understand? frod got no fairplay but we can’t blame it just on him, right? EG should be punished but the main fault belongs to the organization and also the referee! Wanna know what I don’t agree? I don’t agree with the fact of communicate while dead and that limit of 5 minutes to protest about whatever is just a joke! I don't agree with the possitions of the screens and the incompetence of the referees!

It took f0rest ~3 seconds to get to the bomb after killing Danny, Danny not only saw f0rest jump to the bomb but he heard the defuse go off. Also, whoever made that video obviously guessed what Danny said after the "off off off" because it sounds nothing like "he is coming out" even on 1080p. And if that's really a PoV screen where it says "f0rest's PoV" then whoever did that is incredibly dumb for putting a big ass screen in an easy to look place.

Bad sportsmanship by fRoD to say the least. It is also strange that it is usually EG the team that is involved in this kind of situations.

HLTV claims to be unbiased, which is clearly laughable by this comment. What other "situations" are you referring to that EG were in? Are WMF cheaters for appearing to do the same thing frod did then? This seems to be a common occurance in many lans I've been to or read about.

He means that its usually EG complaining about the OTHER team doing something "illegal"

In which sense do I have to be unbiased at all? Do you see that I write news or something on this site? I have my opinion as a user of this site, too. You should be able to easily recall that lately in most, if not all, controversy moments there is one common team name that is involved, EG. So I merely stated something pretty obvious.

So your arguement is that EG is the one most involved in controversy as opposed to other teams? That's a pretty stupid statement, back it up then.

Lately? So what other controversies has EG been in to claim they're the ones most involved in these types of "situations", and what "situations" are you referring to. Answer me instead of dodging, thank you.

As you apparently are a EG fan I presume you follow the matches and competitions your team plays. So besides this situation you should remember what happened at Arbalet Cup 2010 where the team even handed in a protest for a match they did not play. And if this is not enough EG was also featured, together with FX this time, in the controversy regarding the DDoS attacks during the IEM World Finals that affected their matches. I do not need to dodge but this is info you can find yourself here at HLTV.org in case you did not already know if you are an EG fan.

That seems to be no less amount of controversies then other major teams have been in considering I've been reading the entire set of news archives for the past 3 months out of curiosity. The DDoS attacks were widespread and effected Fnatic for the most part, don't see how that contributes to them being constantly in "situations" you describe.

If you do not mind to include examples of the 'no less amount of controversy' as being of the same type of controversy I have mentioned with regard to EG (and I did not refer to them being affected by DDoS attacks but their attitude with regard to the team that was affected by them) I would gladly reply to you concerning them.

Sure. Since you don't clarify what counts as a "situation", and you use an example from over 5 months ago, here is a small list of controversies of other teams and nations from this year. I think its pretty clear you just don't like EG, which is fine but you should think more as a person who is a moderator before generalizing the character of one team saying somehow they are more suspect then the rest. hltv.org/news/4646-lions-deny-party-alle.. hltv.org/news/4768-fnatic-disqualified-f.. hltv.org/news/4824-gux-i-got-used-by-sk hltv.org/news/4483-spain-disqualified-fr.. hltv.org/news/4617-k1ck-file-eswc-protes.. hltv.org/news/4289-khrystal-face-back-st.. hltv.org/news/4306-fx-fnatic-match-halte.. hltv.org/news/4132-spain-protest-against.. hltv.org/news/5639-loord-apologizes-for-.. hltv.org/news/5577-my-disqualified-from-.. hltv.org/news/5609-fallen-banned-from-o2.. hltv.org/news/5575-mym-protest-against-d..

Excuse me? I do not clarify the situation? Did you actually read my message where these situation are explained? And what kind of of equivalent 'controversy' list is that? Lions - hotel issue?? fnatic - sponsor stuff?? Gux - player-orga stuff?? Spain (ENC) - too many pps?? k1ck - seed issue?? kHRYSTAL - player-player issue?? FX/fnatic - stream lagging server issue?? Spain/UK (ENC) - missing aequitas issue?? Loord - insulting host country?? my* (EPS Ger) - team player cheated?? fallen - KODE5 Brazil qual for wrong team?? MYM (IEM5) - fake aequitas screens uploaded?? Are you serious telling me that these are equivalent examples to those I have refered to with regard to EG? Please... By the way, where is the relation of having an opinion for my own about things that happen with that of being moderator? Check the site rules, and I doubt you will anywhere mentioned that you have to think this or that way about a given team here.

You characterized disputes and DDoS attacks as "situations" EG were in to qualify them as being a suspect team. By your logic "situations" count as any controversy, the dispute by EG against WMF was legit, but yet it counts as a "situation" for you. The list I made all seem to qualify as "situations" according to your logic. You're right though, a moderator has a right to be biased, and even a right to be angry as you've shown in your posts. Is it professional, and are you acting professionally by admitting bias and showing anger? Not really.

I would gladly know where I actually did that 'characterization'. Unfortunately, I did not but refered to the controversial situations, during matches, EG had been involved in as you requested and I have, as said, long ago already done. Please do not refer to YOUR logic as MY logic. You consider EG dispute against WMF legit? Fine to me, even though as far as I understand it you are wrong as 1) only teams involved in the match are able to place a dispute and 2) the EG one was considered due to the Arbalet staff wanting to avoid any 'bad taste' for the teams attending the event. Please do not put words in my mouth. I said I have the right to have my own opinion thus, please, do not make a fool of yourself writing what I did not. If you are not able to find the suitable and equivalent situations I have requested (issue still pending despite your dodging) I honestly doubt that you should want to cope with my supposed 'anger' and/or 'bias'.

I found plenty of equivilent situations. You said EG are suspect because they are involved in a cheating dispute, general dispute and DDoS attacks. More then plenty of the links I provided demonstrate all of the above, cheating, disputing and DDoS attacks. I seem to not understand the way you phrase things, I'm assuming English is a second language for you, because of this I'm going to leave it here, it's hard to understand your sentence structures.

I am sorry to say that I have read a lot of dodging, nothing else. And if my 'phrase structures' are what hinders you from assuming the lack of proof you can provide, well, what can I say but, yes, better stop making a fool of yourself.

this is obviously bound to happen when you put a GIANT PROJECTOR SCREEN IN FRONT OF THE PLAYERS. this might be the most pivotal moment that ghosting was used, but it'd be pretty naive to think that no other team used that screen repeatedly..

"WEM is not totally without fault either, players and teams should never have the opportunity to ghost, thus locating a large projection screen in the viewing-field of the teams and not covering it properly, instead of placing it behind them, where potential ghosting would be a lot more obvious, seems like a very odd choice. Also it seems odd, that the WEM organizers penalized Montaner, but rejected fnatic's dispute due to the 5 minutes rule. " I could not agree more. I don't condone Frod doing that but I can't blame him since the opportunity was there.

Disappointing that a team gets no kind of penalty for something like this. Of course it can be hard not to look, but after that you have to actively lean forward to press your push-to-talk key and then actively pass on information. That's three rule violations without any form of punishment - humiliating for the tournament really (and for EG of course, didn't expect that from those gúys :/) Did anyone say Kenan btw? "I shit on fnatic", haha, that was a good one ;p

All the comments that portray fnatic as whiny losers are insanely stupid. They knew that they wouldn't get back in the tournament, but the main point was to bring attention to the bad 5 minute rule and the fact that a screen is placed next to the scene. Fnatic have made complaints like these at events before, and its a good thing, almost everybody agrees that the screen-thing is a bad thing, and we wouldnt have known or thought about it if they hadn't complained.

Look at the TV SCREEN when they won, the TV screen doesn't get fade-to-black + it's left-handed, + FAMAS. (f0rest is using AK) fRod was guessing, and I would too. It's the final round, hard to shut up.

Do you have any proof he actually looked at it? Is there any indication that Danny (if he even did) was the only one to look at those BIG ASS SCREENS in front of the teams? Have to love other countries bashing Americans because some random person caught him looking *gasp* towards the screen, even though it was Tomi's screen he was looking at.

Dude, how much evidence do you need? They clearly caught him ghosting. Whether or not he was the only one is irrelevant because when you play professionally you must play with integrity. This action by fRod puts all of his play over the years into question now: it shows that he isn't above cheating to win. Sure he's good, but I can't respect him anymore.

You're blowing this way out of proportion. You have no idea if he actually looked at it, omg he looked towards the screen (where Tomi's screen is) he must have looked! because people guessed what he said as "he is coming out" which you can't even clearly hear one of those words. Oh man, because text says what he 'said' he must have. Get real. And no it is not irrelevant in any case whatsoever, if a fnatic member did indeed look as well once, then it'd make this stupid thing null and void - then a rematch would most likely ensue.

the issue here is not whether he looked or not to the big screen, most players must have looked at it at some point (due to the admin's bad call to put it there in first place) the issue here is HIS decision to tell lurppis about what f0rest was doing after he was dead in-game, and you CAN clearly hear his words, stop trying to cover the sun with a finger and accept the fact he's just a blatant cheater

You want to believe that he wasn't looking at the screen and also that a lot of people are not hearing what they think do in fRod's final statement, so just for the sake of argument let us assume he wasn't ghosting. He still pushed his mouse button for his microphone to tell lurppis "He is on top" and "off off off" after he was dead. The rulebook states: Player should take off hands from mouse and keyboard after fragged. Players can't talk about game after being eliminated. However, he can cheer on his team players. This is directly in the article. Even if he didn't ghost what he did was cheating. And also, it is irrelevant whether or not other players were ghosting because it is never right to cheat. That is what disputes are for. fRod showed us what lows he will sink to for a win in that video.
