NiP, ESC cruise in Cph Games opener

Ninjas in Pyjamas and ESC Gaming sent out a strong message to their rivals at Copenhagen Games after comfortably winning their first group match in Denmark.

Having come from the qualifier, the Polish giants are the third-seeded team in Group F, but they proved that they have the quality to make their mark at this event by easing past top seed n!faculty on two maps (16-5 on de_mirage_go and de_dust2_se).

NiP's first map against EYES ON U was a walk in the park for the Swedes, who came out on top with a 16-3 scorelines, and even though the home side looked more lively on de_inferno_se, that was not enough to scare their opponents as the ESWC champions posted up a 16-12 victory to pick up the three points.

After beating Lemondogs 16-4 on de_nuke_se, VeryGames certainly did not expect that they would have to work hard to get the victory, but that is exactly what happened. The Swedish side pulled one map back, winning de_mirage_go, which has lately been a bad map for VeryGames, but then the French side regained control of the tie and won the third map, de_inferno_se, with a 16-10 scoreline.

f0rest topped the charts against EOU

After losing the first map against BX3 by default, Natus Vincere picked themselves up and turned the score around, beating the Norwegians 16-6 on de_mirage_go and 16-8 on de_inferno_se.

North American duo Quantic Gaming and Curse got off to good starts in Copenhagen with 2-0 victories over fm-eSports TOXiC and Reason Gaming, respectively, while Anexis eSports breezed past LowLandLions.

Tie. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Looks like cup tie is indeed a football-specific term, but I can't find any examples of tie being used on its own in this way. At any rate, it sounds very strange to anyone who doesn't follow football - just like test or ODI would sound strange to anyone who doesn't follow cricket. It's especially confusing since the more common meaning of the word is draw, as in when opposing teams have equal score at the end of the game. At first I thought you were trying to say "Team X won the overtime battle". I'd suggest using bout, match or encounter, as these are more widely used and/or less ambiguous.

It does. It's common to use 'tie' to denote a match or game between two opponents. Although it has many other usages besides.

Apparently so in football. I've never heard it used in any other sport.

In cs:go matchmaking the draw = tie so pls stop with arguing it's only in football.

It's used in all sports where two teams or individuals compete directly against each other. So tennis, boxing, snooker, cricket ect. But you wouldn't use it to describe say a race with several competitors. I don't know if it's used in other English speaking countries besides the UK but it's used widely here. And yes its confusing as you said above with its use as the equivalent of 'draw', because you could say 'the result of this tie was a tie' and be technically correct; you'd sound stupid ofc but commentators usually are.

I'm English, and I've never heard it used this way a single time in cricket or tennis. I watch a lot of cricket and tennis, though not much boxing or snooker. It's also very difficult to find an example of it by googling. Try "cricket tie", "tennis tie", "boxing tie" - literally all that comes up is how ties are broken and/or the circumstances in which ties are allowed to stand. (I'm not trying to be adversarial, just rather surprised that I've never heard the word used in this way before.)
