Admin comments on Na´Vi dropout

Following Natus Vincere's decision to pull out of Copenhagen Games, we caught up with head admin Louise Vestergaard for a reaction to the news.

The Ukrainian giants stunned fans and critics alike on Friday evening when they abandon the CS:GO tournament before the playoffs over the admins' decision to keep them as the third-placed side of Group B.

Na´Vi stated that, following a three-way tie with fnatic and Epsilon, the group standings should be determined by the round difference of the tied teams, and not the map difference.

After much deliberation, it was decided that the map difference would be the criterion to use, like it is stated in the rules, which left Na´Vi fuming as they were thrown into the Lower Bracket.

In a statement issued by Alexander "ZeroGravity" Kokhanovsky, the Na´Vi CEO described the admins' treatment of his team "disrespectful" and revealed that he plans on creating an association along with other professional organisations to "change the face of modern e-Sports".

Contacted by HLTV.org, Cph Games head admin Louise Vestergaard stated that the admins were very lenient towards Na´Vi and that they simply followed the rules.

"This morning, Na´Vi showed up at 9 and asked our receptionists when the matches started," she told HLTV.org. "They were told it was at 10, and at 10:14 they showed up at the venue to collect their rented PCs and set up to play.

"We told them they had 15 minutes, which meant we would wait for them for 30 minutes to set up and get ready, or they would lose the first map.

"Since they did not get ready, they got the message that they had lost the first map against BX3 and that the second map would start at 11. So in the end, we waited one hour for them to be ready.

"As stated in the rules, tiebreakers are solved as follows, using Na´Vi's group as an example:

  • Tiebreaker 1: W-L-T in head to head (2 points for Na´Vi, Fnatic and Epsilon, which means they are equal);
  • Tiebreaker 2:  Point differential in head to head (They all have the same differential, being 0);
  • Tiebreaker3:  Point differential in all series (Na´Vi were the only team to lose a map against BX3, which is why they placed third in the group).

"This is why we had to bring in the results against BX3. Since both fnatic and Epsilon had won 2-0 against them, and Na´Vi had lost a map against them due to being late, the Ukrainians ended up placing third in the group.

"We explained this to the two involved teams, Fnatic and Na´Vi, and both teams were very professional and agreed with us. Sadly, after this we got contacted by Na´Vi's manager, who told us he had been in contact with their organization and that they were not satisfied with our decision. They chose to leave the tournament. I am sorry to see Na´Vi go, and I am sure they could have done a great job in the lower bracket."

A broken PC is an excuse for being late in your opinion? If it was broken they should have inform the organizers and would not loose a map.

Ummm are you retarded or have you not actually read up on the situation? CPH games supplied the rental PCs. One of the rentals was shit and navi was penalized for the delay replacing it.

This post proves you're misinformed and stupid. There were other teams that showe up late (they were penalized as well). Go read up a bit more because you don't know what you're talking about. Also, apparently there are several players from other teams who saw members of navi at the venue before the scheduled start time. It is clearly a case of buying navi's story vs the admins. Only reason I believe navi right now is because CPH games was a mess outside of this incident.

if that criterion cannot be used (in this case it cannot, since it doesn't change anything), then they take into consideration the last team.

I call bullshit on the rules the admin posted in his statement. Quote from CPH rules : If teams are tied on points in any group stage the standing between these teams will be decided: firstly by the result of the match between the teams concerned, then by points differential in the matches between the teams concerned and then by points differential in all matches concerning the teams in question. Which means round diference between the 3 teams, not all 4 teams.

The rules are written in a very "clever" way, so that the admins can interpret "points" as map points if they want. So if you take it this way the first two steps still don't brake the tie and they have to consider the BX3 matches to break it.

It's really stupid and it's hurting e-sports. Making questionale/interpretable rules just so you can have the power to decide the playoffs. Best way i can think to sort in the future stuff like this is with examples. 3 way tie can happen either at 2-1 or 1-2. So, just figure them out.

And all those matches were 2:1 so you can't solve anything by comparing only those 3, hence they brought result vs. BX3 which solves the tie.

Hm. You'd think they'd look at RD and not map difference, but admins' decisions are admins' decisions. I always like hearing both sides of every story, and I must say I'm favoring Copenhagen Games here (not like I hate Na'Vi or anything, they were in my top 3 back in 1.6).

Well then most of tournaments are stupid because it's hard to find one with MR30 in groupstages. ESWC 2012, Dreamhack 2012, THOR Open, NorthCon, HKLAN 2013, MadCatz - all of them were played MR16 in groups and nobody comlained when there was three way tie and simply RD was the decider.

This is what confuses me: "After much deliberation, it was decided that the map difference would be the criterion to use" If the rules are clear then why did it take so much time to decide ? The admin literally had to chose a winner ?

The rules aren't clear at all in this situation, so they had to decide something. It has happened too often at danish lan because the specifics of the rule system is usually an afterthought to the whole thing.

This make sense by their definition of the rules, even though the round differential in the matches involving the 3 teams should be used before the tiebreaker 3 in my opinion. It's a shame the clarity of the rules perhaps may have created this controversy.

actually they wouldnt cause they expected round difference to be taken in consideration. Lurppis:"I also know from sources in Copenhagen that for a while fnatic were raged because they were going to be knocked down to the lower bracket (as the admins were going to go by rounds among the three tied participants), but after more whining ended up first in the group."

And I was there myself in the morning as spectator and all this would not have happend if NaVi showed up in time. There were no where to be seen at 10 am. Don't believe everything Lurppis says, he has been hating towards the whole event even before it started.

looks like the na'vi manager is the one causing the problems from everything i've read.. he wanted them to pull out before for being punished, players wanted to stay, then from what has been wrote on the na'vi site he understood the rules wrong and got them to pull out.. if it happened to them like it did to us i would understand, but they didn't get told that all the rules were translated into english from korean wrong and they'd be going out instead of being 1st in the group

"Point differential" what do you consider as a Point in CS. Maps or rounds, the rules never specified clearly. So its rules fault here. Doesn't matter Na'Vi or Fnatic placed first, someones gonna get butthurt after arguing with admins for long time and not getting the first place

If it is a BO3, you win the match by winning most maps than your opponent. Team 1 16 - 0 Team 2 Team 1 14 - 16 Team 2 Team 1 14 - 16 Team 2 By rounds, Team 1 would have more "Points" than Team 2 and that is clearly not accurate to define the winner, so IMO "Points" in this case is correctly assigned to Maps

If teams are tied on points in any group stage the standing between these teams will be decided firstly by the result of the match between the teams concerned, then by points differential in the matches between the teams concerned and then by points differential in all matches concerning the teams in question. fnatic 2-1 Epsilon 16-14 12-16 16-13 fnatic;+1 Epsilon;-1 Epsilon 2-1 Na'Vi 16-13 12-16 16-13 Epsilon;+2 Na'Vi;-2 Navi 2-1 Fnatic 10-16 16-6 ?-? can't find the score Even with just first 2 maps Na'Vi;+4 Fnatic;-4 Fnatic loses last map so its more + for Na'Vi and more - for Fnatic Overall round diff Na'Vi +2 ++ Epsilon +1 Fnatic -3 -- However because rule never state clearly what they mean by Point, they, quoting the HLTV article, simply say Point means map and push through Fnatic and Epsilon into upper bracket.

Point obviously means MAP. Maps weren't played in full 30 rounds for round difference to be any relevant.

What's this dumb shit rofl. The only time round difference can be used is when all 30 rounds are played. This tournament obviously didn't use or have round difference in the rules since they didn't play all rounds.

what are you talking about? MOST of tournament are played BO1 MR16 in gropustages. It's always been like that. I'm not saying it's good or bad but don't tell me that RD can be used only when they play all 30 rounds. Examples of LANs in CSGO being played only MR16 BO1: ESWC 2012, Dreamhack 2012, THOR Open, NorthCon, HKLAN 2013, MadCatz.. I just checked randomly Events Archive and didn't find any LAN that was played MR30 in groupstages. And in all these LANs RD was decider when there was three way tie.

from a very objective point of view, i'll try to sum up the story from what i've read on HLTV. 1. NaVi arrived at around 10:15 (according to many sources). The matches were supposed to start at 10. Other teams showed up in time. NaVi: "our manager was at the venue at 9 but he saw no one. he asked the receptionists and was told to get back at 10." CPH: "NaVi's manager was there at 9 and was told to get back at 10." 2. One of the CPH's rental computers was out of function. NaVi got forfeited. NaVi: "We arrived at TEN. Then the admins told us that we have FIVE minutes to set up and play or else we would lost the 1st map by default. We couldn't do that in time because of computer issue." CPH: "NaVi arrived at TEN FOURTEEN. We told them they have FIFTEEN minutes to set up and play, which meant they were 'given' a total amount of 30 mins to prepare. Since they didn't get ready, they were told that they had lost their 1st map." 3. 3-way tied. - At first the result looked like this: fnatic > Epsilon > NaVi. - According to NaVi: NaVi > Epsilon > fnatic. - Admins agreed. - fnatic raged up. - Admins changed back to first decision. NaVi: "We must use RD to break the tie. Then we came out on top." CPH: "That makes sense!" fnatic: "Watda%^&*(&1" CPH: "Oh yeah, teams didn't play all 30 rounds, so we HAVE to use map differences. Between fnatic, Epsilon and NaVi, MD are useless. So we have to include BX3's matches. Then NaVi came out 3rd place." 4. NaVi: "bad luck & no fun. we're leaving." CPH: "bye." Correct me if i'm wrong.

If they had followed the rules they would have avoided this. Cant blame cph games for that. And dont you even consider saying they wouldnt have been late if they had working computers. They were already 15 minutes too late from the very beginning.

So what u are saying is that every single tournament ever created has been run by a shit org, bc every single tournament in history has had delays due to something. You cant just talk shit about cph bc you are a navi fanboy...every team showed up on time except navi. They received the loss bc if they were given the chance to play their 1st map then that would have pushed the times back even more and caused more of a delay for the next match, and it would have kept going on and on for the entire day.

Even if they got there at 9:30, and went to set up they still wouldn't make it @10. It took them like half an hour to replace broken pc, which cph admin doesn't even mention for some reason. Also i think lurppis said that nostalgie came on time and had same pc issues and they were also given 1 map loss, so for everyone saying like "come on time next time/don't cry check schedule" and shit like that, if what lurppis said is true than it wouldn't have made any difference they would still get 1 map loss anyways even if they were there on time. But yeah both sides made mistakes, not that it really matters now, sadly they are out of tournament and everyone will probably forget about this in a week if Zerogravity doesn't make a big deal out of this whole thing like he said he would on twitter last night. Regardless organization is shit.

Well if they got to venue at 9:30 they wouldn't seen that the pc was broken right away. They had to pick them up first, set up and then see its broken. Probably lost like 5-10 minutes there, so they would've been like 10 mins late.

well 5-10 mins late because of technical issues is totally acceptable. esp. ones that come from the organizers' side. nevertheless NaVi should have been there at around 9. as in the case of nostalgie, none of the insiders have spoken. so until then i refused to believe lurppis' story. simply because it sounds really awkward. too weird of an admin (CPHG admin) to do what he did.

Well, the "Point" in Tie breaker2 was so fish. If the adms considered round point as usual, then fantic became third in group, and the Denmanrk fanboys would not be satisfied That's why they included BX3 to make fnatic be 1st in group.

lol, where is the truth? Zerogravity says they were told that the game starts at 10 and then it appeared to be at 9.And the orgs say that the game had to be started at 10 and Navi arrived at 9. And why the orgs have chosen the most severe punishment, if everybody knows that delay is a common thing for every event and most of times its the problem of both team and orgs?

Let's assume the admins are at fault. Na'vi is not going to gain anything by pulling out. They should win from lower bracket and try win the tournament. This way they will earn more respect. I think they pulled out because they realize they have no chance winning this tournament. They failed against epsilon what chance they have against NIP

This is what I was waiting for, to form my opinion. Unlike others who agreed with NaVi right away. As you can see, Im a fan of NaVi but I think their decision was wrong. That doesnt mean I agree with organizators, the rules and its interpretation which caused the misunderstanding was their fault. NaVi should have played the first round of lower bracket and then fill out a protest or something, not just "ragequit". FFS you let your fans down NaVi, they were waiting to see their favourite team clash in some epic battle, doesnt matter it would be lower bracket. just my unimportant opinion.

According to ZeroGravity they were told to arrive at 10CET, which they did (and according to semphis from Quantic, he saw Na`Vi setting up as he was just arriving there; and Quantic didn't get forfeited). They then got their rental computers (from Copenhagen Games - obviously the responsibility must also be on them then). why quantic didn't get forfeited??

Retarded people who call cph admins idiots. I dont know, maybe in Ukraine they dont have a watches, but in civilized world, when you are late, you must be punished. Since 1.6, when we had a match between navi other team, there always were delays, 3 navi players on server, while for example SK had full team, then after 15 rounds they had a 20 minute pause, after 1st map pause, omg. They need to masturbate before every game, or what? Good decision admins, and Navi, yeah, go out, noone cares about you :)

Navi only have themselves to blame. Every other team showed up on time, if your late, its not everyone elses fault. Broken PC? should have been there on time to sort it out ON TIME. If a team had to go out, it should be . The other two teams were ahead anyway due to the criteria written out, PLUS they didnt hinder the tournament. LOL at them forming a committee just because they have been treated badly once, stop throwing your toys out of the pram. For people saying it wouldnt happen to NiP as they are a big name, well Navi arent exactly unknown now are they...

used to like navi but they always crying about the ruels and admins. You can always get diffrent results from a three way tie depending what they base the resault on. sometimes its in your favour and sometimes against you, live with it. If they wont end up in this kind of situations no one forbade them to win thier maps in the groupstage. this behavour is what i call bad losers!

dont saying fnatic did the right thing....but admins decide and thats a risk you have to take if you cant get a resualt thats good enough from the groupstage. someone have to lose and unfortunatly for navi chp-games decided to count map-diffrence.

you see it in right way, but between those 3 teams all 3 maps had been played. still a legit comment from you, round difference could be counted anyways (you don't need to play all 30 of them).

Navi always lost matches in group stages at their prime and at play offs they won each event at 1.6. They left because they were forced to play random bo1 instead of showing what they can do with bo3.

Hello guys, We are looking for a brave Dane who would help us to translate some of CS:GO related discussion between admins / fnatic during our last night's incident at Copenhagen Games 2013. If you can help us, please PM me with your skype and I'll show you the videos. We will publish the videos at youtube.com/natusvinceretv once we are done with DK -> EN translation!

The one who made the controversial rules should be to blame. It's not admins fault that the rules could be interpreted in two ways. The rules should not use "points" as a term, but "maps" and "rounds". Admins are unexperienced, but its organisation's fault for making controversial rules and hiring unexperienced admins. Btw, Na'Vi's punishment for being late seems legit. But situation with counting "points" in a tree-way tie - it is a completely different case and should be looked at separately.

SO basiclly to get things straight: Fnatic was informed that they`re going to playoffs BEFORE their last game, because Admins are shit and dont know their own rules. Fnatic lost that game, Navi asked about the rules for a tie breaker - Admins checked the rules are realized that fnatic is actually going to loser bracket and Navi is now 1st in the group - once again leaving admins somewhat responsible for Fnatics lower bracket spot as You dont really know how fnatic would play if they actually had to fight for the playoff spot. Fnatic goes to the admins and complains (very understandable I would be pissed off as well). Admins after long discussion decide not to follow their tournament rules in favor of fnatic which they`ve previously screwed over, making NaVi take the punishment for a mess that Admins themself created. Navi leaves the tournament. All in all - CPH Games - get yourself some fucking proper admins that can follow a simple set of rules that pretty much every tournament is using for the past god knows how many years. Not to mention - how hard is that to take both team captains on a side, explain the situation, tell them You`re sorry and You fucked up, apologize, ask one another to understand it and act mature enough so some kind of a solution can be made. Sitting behind your fucking desk and listening to people yelling at You is not the way You solve Your OWN mistakes. And as for Navi/Fnatic - was expecting more from such a big organizations - Admins fucked up - shit happens and at this point it was not possible for the admins to make a decision that wouldnt screw over one of the teams so both orgs could`ve understand that and come up with a better solution (fucking rock paper scizzors for the playoffs, really anything is better then leaving the tournament)

my respect to this orator. best comment by far. agree on full 100%. admins fucked up, at the same time navi could stay and play for all of their fans, anyway they would be dropped to lower bracket by nip, and top2 is max what they could compete obviously. big - to navi big - to cph games and huge for cs:go itself.

This. Nevertheless, the whole thing wouldn't even exist had Na`VI come early for their first match vs BX3 and double-check their equipment. Both sides aren't innocent.

Na'Vi have been children since they started winning lans. I assume that was the right decision, CPH admins did everyone a favour by sending them to the lower bracket so they can understand the consquences of every decision they make.

I can remember outrageous case that happened during Xperia Play 2011 (CPH games event for cs 1.6 community). Orgas put the caster next to the mTw palyers. During semifinal map mTw vs Frag eXecutors that guy has been showing to danish players stream without delay. When polish guys found out about this: *DEAD* Frag eXecutors KUBEN[t] : to all you guys watching *DEAD* Frag eXecutors KUBEN[t] : there was a guy *DEAD* Frag eXecutors KUBEN[t] : sitting next to mtw guys *DEAD* Frag eXecutors KUBEN[t] : showing them stream *DEAD* Frag eXecutors KUBEN[t] : ... *DEAD* Frag eXecutors KUBEN[t] : GG *DEAD* Frag eXecutors KUBEN[t] : DENMARK match was paused and admins asked caster to turn the monitor to the other side (as said caster sl4m, who were informed by a reporter Lexx). DEMO LINK: hltv.org/?pageid=28&comments=1&demoid=10.. This is one more fact, that CHPG admins are unprofessional and prejudiced. i realize about navi's fail. anyway it's a cause to stop admins' despotism on the tourneys.
