Organizers comment on NiP protest

The main organizer behind DreamHack Bucharest, Silviu Stroie has given us an official statement regarding the NiP versus fnatic match's protest.

As we reported an hour ago, NiP protested after losing 16-21 versus fnatic due to the overtime taking place using max rounds five ruleset as opposed to max rounds three.

Stroie told us originally the score was going to be set to 4-1, but NiP protested to continue playing from 2-1, followed up by fnatic protesting back, unhappy about the decision.

Silviu, cArn and NiP's Fiskoo discussing the protest

fnatic's players had already left their computers when Patrik "cArn" Sättermon gave them the news that they would have to re-play the overtime of their hugely important upset win.

"Somebody on our side made a mistake, set up overtime mr5 instead of mr3. The initial score was 4-1 2-0 for fnatic, then NiP protested so I came to talk to both NiP and fnatic managers and both agreed to my decision that we will play the second half of overtime starting with 2-1 for fnatic, Stroie told HLTV.org.

"Then cArn came back and said that his players don't agree with this decision and that they are officially protesting. Then I talked to my other admins and we decided we will stick to our initial decision 2-1 for fnatic, we are gonna play 3 more rounds in second half of overtime and fnatic will be Terrorist."

HLTV.org are currently trying to reach both Sättermon and a representative from NiP for a comment. fnatic just won the re-played overtime 4-1, and got to keep their victory after all.

fix the second OT score, should be *4-2 But yeah, definitely, fnatic deserved it like hell. Every NiP fanboy is crying about fnatic being "unprofessional" despite the fact that NiP could have asked for a pause on the 4th round of first OT to clarify OT rounds

*Replying to you so everyone can see it* Guys, sure fnatic deserved this. fnatic played a very good game and NiP did the opposite which clearly gives fnatic the upper hand on deserving this win. This is the first time NiP does something like this, it is not anything to go viral with. Look back at the 1.6 teams, how many teams have not tried to replay overtimes, disturb/destroy for opponents in order to win a match? NiP maybe bullshitted a little bit too much because this was fnatics win, but seriously. If this community is going to keep crying about one little mistake from the NiP side, everyone should seriously think twice. This community is going to hell right now, only falling lower by every game that goes on.. Get over it for f*ck sake, enjoy DreamHack -.-'

And when he said "no respect" haha, then we really should't talk about NaVi team, kicking computers at lan, ghosting at lan och for some months ago drops from a tournament. so many things like that were made by them (romanian admins and silviu stroe) over the years. changing results because of "mistakes" and so forth. over the years, at least 3 top5 teams decided to quit because of what they did.

pgl forums :) actually, a top2 team was kicked from la WCG qualifier in romania after they won against teg. reason? silviu stroe made a vote with teg players if that team was using ddos against others in the online league which was over 30 days before the qualifier. and many other shity things like that.

PGL forums aren't really source. More like articles and how about some names, maybe? What teams left the scene because of this supposed rule changes and stuff? You've only listed one, when originally you said 'at least' 3 top5

i wont start now to tell the whole story. and pgl forums are sources since in there we had sections for every division and, for example, in Division A only the players playing in A were able to post. also, in pgl forums, the PGL Admins were publishing all the decisions. i only said a case that happened at WCG Qualifier, played on LAN. and i was there when silviu and teg players made a vote about kicking that team which was better than teg at that point. and again, they were kicked at a lan because teg players said they were ddosing in online league which was over.

Alright, that's fair. But can I ask, how on earth is this somehow considered a bullshit move? The rules that were played weren't the ones that were proposed by Dreamhack. What would you have done in that case? "Oh you made a mistake? That's okay, we'll just take the loss and move on..." somehow I doubt that. NiP did what every other team would have done in that situation. The fact that people are now calling out NiP is kind of hilarious and so contradicting. "LOL GeT_CrY huehuehuehue" oh please.

not really. and that's because they've played more rounds than it should and nip defeat was pretty heave, 1-6. and they should've had played MR3, meaning 1-2 after the first half and 0-1 on the second. well, nip did not agree to replay from 1-3, but from 1-2. that's the first thing. 2nd is that, after your defeat is so clear, you don't go whining. 3rd, why didn't nip players paused the game at 1-2, in the second half? they didn't knew at that point that it suposed to be MR3, but they knew about it 4 seconds after the game was lost and they made a protest, right? well, no, they simply played and tried to win that as it was.

Sure, NiP should have said something earlier on, but that doesn't make the situation better. Admins didn't follow the correct rules. Whether NiP was right in complaining after the game was over is irrelevant. That situation shouldn't have happened in the first place. Then fnatic's response to the win was disappointing and unsportsmanlike: youtube.com/watch?v=kb6M_8rLn_4 They went into this match expecting to lose, and then it so happened that they outplayed NiP, and won. Then; instead of admitting that what the admins did was wrong, they bitched and moaned, not wanting to play because they knew they that NiP had an opportunity to still win it. Either way; they play and obviously they win with a clearer advantage, but they still act like dicks about it.

forum.pgl.ro/archive/index.php/t-24980.h.. - here it is the link from what i've said. pgl silviu said from the start: "we are forced to kick a team even if there are not rules against what we think they did" more, he said they used ddose. (all of those asking questions, or most of them, are players from that team or division A players). after many division A players asked for proofs, silviu replied: "we don't have any proof and no rules against ddose, but because some of their opponents had internet problems they placed on an undeserved 3rd place in Division A". and he decided with teg to kick them at wcg qualifier :> and we had far worse cases than this one, but i'm to lazy to search them now. if you want to read, use google translate and it should be close.

Yeeee!!" teg-perry, that piece of shit, and silviu kicked that team to clear teg's path.

NiP were in the right to protest, since the organizers fucked up big time. Playing only one half of overtime is retarded, but with how well both sides played terrorist, it did not seem like a bad deal for fnatic and in the end they won.

Okay so lets see you be in their position, where money that pays your bills is on the line, you think they give a shit about their morals? Would you in their position? If you say yes then you are just lying to prove a point.

they were not in the right to protest. they played a fair and even match. if the decision from the admins to begin with were to play bo5, thats what you do no more no less. its damn unprofessional taking the decision to re do it.

As I say above, they are in it to win, so it is completely fair to protest, when the rules say otherwise.

Do not make comparisons between subjects that have nothing in common. Of course there is logic behind the reason to replay some of the overtime - its in the rules. If you cannot see that rules are there to be followed, then you are beyond hope.

Doesn't make much sense Wolf, since round 4 and 5 were totally out of the picture after they realised it being MR3. Either you replay the whole overtime or nothing. The initial rounds of the second half stand as much as those of the first half. Aye, they're entitled to protest, but the reasonable and most fair decision would be to count the initial rounds (leaving out round 4 and 5) and that would still have given fnatic the win. So choosing to protest even though can't really be counted as good sportsmanship at least. Although they seemingly went for the complete replay. But either way they only gained from spending as much money as possible in the 3rd round of the 1st overtime, it can never have been a disadvantage for them with round 4 and 5 not counting. Admin incompetence to blame yet again of course, always sad :/ Although it could've been somewhat worse of course.

It seems we largely agree. I do not care about sportmanship in this situation tbh. as I am sure fnatic would have protested, had they lost. I am a bit confused about what you are trying to say about the ot, but again, I think we actually agree, from what I can see.

We usually do ;) I just meant your reference to #111 where it seems the poster not realising that both round 4 and 5 of the 1st half as well as round 1 and 2 of the 2nd half were skipped. NiP thought it was MR3 and was definitely going to check it afterwards regardless. But it seems a bit petty not to pause right away, seemingly going for a win and only if not then otherwise protest. Of course fnatic might very well have done the exact same, as you mention, but in my book that doesn't make it the 'alright' thing to do, and it's certainly not good sportsmanship. Which I think is only fair to mention every time it happens to get as much focus as possible on those kinds of things. Hopefully that can only help to get rid of just a tiny bit of it :/ Either way though, it's on the admins and the ruleset as so often before. Had the rules only stated something à la "complete re-play if wrong settings used, unless both teams agree otherwise", then we would've been without the whole incident. Re-playing just one half, acknowledging the one and not the other, doesn't make much sense at all though.

Ah, now I understand. Yes, I can agree that it looks a bit suspicious that NiP did not request a pause after the first three rounds. Looking at it like that, I guess you could question their sportmanship. :) Once again it just shows the need for clear rules, so the organizers do not have to make questionable decisions on the spot. The ot should have been reset, I completely agree on that.

Everyone knows CS is a game of momentum, especially on LAN. Any rounds played after round 3 are biased and effected by the confusion, so people who claim the first 2 rounds that went to fnatic in the 2nd half should be maintained are ignoring this fact. Only the first 3 rounds (well honestly only the first 2 really) are honest and uneffected rounds.

Usually I hate whiners, but NiP does have a genuine reason to complain: NiP believed overtime was supposed to Maxrounds 3 (which is says in the rules). So at the start of the third round, Xizt bought an ak AND an awp to try to get a quick pick thinking it was the last round of the half anyway. They lost that round, and then had to SAVE after realizing fnatic was continuing to play... which gave fnatic a second round for free. If they knew they were going to have to play 2 more rounds, they would never had bought like that. And, as the rules state, it was supposed to only be Maxrounds 3 anyway. So... I'd think before calling NiP whiners.

Learn to read brah. None of them knew its set to mr5 on the server = theyve played mr3 strats(awps), but suddenly they had to eco twice, coz it was mr5. People are complaing about taking 2 rounds of fnatic in mr5, and that its unfair. Why is it unfair? Coz none of them knew its mr5? - thats not fault of the teams, but the admins. Rules are to be followed, i dont see anything bad on NiP's complaining. Im not a NiP fan, not even fnatic fan, even i was cheering for fnatic in this match, to make it more interesting due to NiP's dominance, but i just hate the people flaming them coz of the rules.

That's not my point? Why are you turning that to my face? I AGREE on that the 2 rounds after the 3rd where NiP bought awp's and stuff SHOULDN'T BE COUNTED. I do not, however, agree on that the two rounds fnatic took as T in the second half of the OT, WAS NOT counted. BECAUSE, NiP didn't leave a protest DURING THE GAME.

Well, im 100% sure any of the teams would leave protest after the match if they are aware of making a big mistake due to the rules. And Im 100% sure that fnatic would do the same if they would make huuuuuge economy mistake in the overtime. I might be wrong, but thats my opinion. Anyway, leave it be, everyones got its own opinion, but its sad to read a flame coz of mistake of admins.

But this "economical mistake" in 3rd round, doesn't really count, as if it HAD been mr3 at first, fnatic would've still been in the lead with 2-1 after ct half, then they took the 2 first rounds as T? That's a win, no matter it's mr5 or 3. And yes, had NiP won, fnatic would most perhaps leave a protest, maybe. But you're forgetting that fnatic protested AGAINST this decision of the admins to have another OT starting with 2-1 score for fnatic, as fnatic thought the 2 first rounds they took as T should count as much as the 2 (4) they took as CT.

It's not only about the economy, it's also about the mindset. Do you think that NiP was able to deliver their A game in the second half of the overtime after being screwed in the first half ? And it's also kinda different starting to play the second half thinking that you are 3-1 down instead of just 2-1.

My point is that NiP knew they were screwed in the first half. And when you know something like that, you are not able to play at you best level, because you keep thinking about it and not about the game. The three first rounds of the second half were biased and influenced by the situation. So they weren't counted and I think that was the right decision.

Honestly? You're talking about emotions, still you fail to see the situation fnatic had to face, forced to play another OT which they thought they had won. How can you be this biased? Only seeing the one side of the coin, being NiP. These arguments about emotions going into the 2nd half is flawed, there was emotions for fnatic going into ANOTHER OT as well, hence why the results should be the decider, not which team had the most emotions..

Well you are right, but is there any fair resolution to this situation for both sides ? EDIT: When i think about it again, it's not the same for fnatic in terms of emotions. Because NiP had rules behind them. When it comes to emotions vs. emotions you just have to stick with the rules.

I think the fairest way would've been to just let it go, have fnatic win. An admin screwed up big time but after all, an OT was played, only MR5 instead of 3 (which the rules stated). I'm sure both teams was aware of the rules, max rounds 3 in OT, only that fnatic payed attention to it saying 5 rounds at the top screen when it started. There was, most likely confusion, but apparently not enough for NiP to pause the game and seek an admin. This, to me, is another flaw. Instead they just waited for the outcome of the OT and then, when they lost, searched for an admin to leave the protest. But it's just my opinion. EDIT: But there's no rules supporting that the three first rounds of 1st half should get counted during a failed OT, BUT the three first of the 2nd half shouldn't. So no, NiP didn't have the "rules" behind them in this matter. There's often no rules settling mistakes made of admins..

I don't believe that there is any team in the world in any sport or e-sport that would just "let it go" in a situation when the rules were broken. But I agree that the resolution should be added to the rules in the future so that this can't happen again. When there is no written rule, you have to accept what admin says. Admins decided like they did and there's no reason to hate either of the involved teams for it.

No, after the first 3 rounds it was 2-1 for fnatic. That's why it started 2-1 when they replayed it. The two rounds AFTER this confusion went to fnatic to make it 4-1. That's why they restarted second have as 2-1 for fnatic. After 3 rounds it was 2-1 fnatic, and that should have been the end of the first half. That's why they started second half 2-1 fnatic.

Yes, I agree. It was 2-1 fnatic first half, then, both teams continued playing, NO ONE protested during the game, keep in mind. And fnatic took the 2 first rounds as T? 4-1 = win.

That's exactly NiP's point... They lost the third round making it 2-1 fnatic. That's fair. The two rounds AFTER that are what they protested - the 4-1 is what they protested.

I'm not talking about the 2 rounds after the 3rd as fnatic playing ct? I'm talking about the two rounds fnatic got as T? wtf are you whining about?

Because you play with a different mindset thinking you have to win 4-5 rounds in a row vs 2-3. It's simply not fair.

NiP starts second half of overtime thinking they have to win 4 rounds to tie or 5 rounds to win. That's a lot harder to think about compared to having to win 2 rounds to tie or 3 rounds to win. Not to mention, the scores were simply wrong in general and the second half of overtime started before everything was settled. Thus, they replayed it.

Was there even a protest before the second half of OT started? As I got it, there was none. Both teams were "ready" and the second half started. Sure, it might have had some mental effect, so what? Don't you think fnatic had mental pressure after "what-they-thought" was a clean victory over NiP, ended up in another OT, where they might as well had lost? If we get rid of all this "mental pressure" and just look of how the scores were, fnatic would've won even had it been mr3.

NiP were surprised when the half didn't end at mr3. Fnatic told them mr5 so they thought it was mr5 until after the match. And it's much different playing thinking you need to win 4 rounds in a row just to tie vs 2. So after the match when they realized it really was supposed to just be mr3, they protested to reply the second half of overtime, which I would've done. Then you are playing honestly without any confusion.

And here's where this is two sided: One side thinks they won NiP honestly in a mr5, when suddenly, after the match it turns out it should'd been a mr3. The admins gathering both teams, and decides to play the OT over again, with a 2-1 lead to fnatic, fnatic protests however. So, according to the admins, the first half was valid until the 4th round, where the points stopped counting. But the second half, which was played fiercely by both teams, the 3 first rounds were not valid, even though 3 rounds at the first half was. So, according to you, mentality was the only decider claiming another OT, and in my opinion this is just a weak argument, as fnatic would've won had it been mr3.

But these two rounds don't even matter. NiP also lost the two first rounds of the second half, so even if you ignore the two last rounds of the first half NiP would have lost 4:1. NiP never took a time-out and they wrote "ready" after the first half.

They didn't know it was supposed to be maxrounds 3 for sure until after the match - they took fnatic's word for it. That's why they protested, after they found out it really was supposed to only be mr3. It's much different to start an overtime half thinking you need to win 4 rounds in a row just to tie vs 2.

You talk like fnatic's plan was to cheat but it was just a admin's fault to set the game-rules on mr5 instead of mr3. Fact is that the played 1:2 in the first three rounds of the first half and 0:2 in the second half. That's all that matters. They would have lost independently from the max-round-rules. Your "psychological argument" isn't really relevant here. With mr3-gamerules fnatic would have needed 2 rounds to win (after the first half), EXACTLY like with the mr5-gamerules. Yes, NiP would have needed more rounds to win in mr5, but if you really think that this little mental difference (dude we're speaking about a professional team and one of the mental strongest team in the world) would have changed the two rounds of the second round and it makes it legit to take the win away from fnatic although they've done nothing wrong (the wrong gamerules weren't their fault) you just don't understand what sportsmanship means.

saying it's "kinda fair" just because fnatic managed to win again is so fucking stupid. nip shouldn't have protested in the first place and/or admins should've realized they can't replay an overtime like that.

You're right that admins should have realised, but that's tournament admins for you... Saying NiP shouldn't have protested is wrong. That's exactly what the protest is there for, to be used when something happens you believe deviates from the agreed rules. It is fair that they won. Just as it's fair NiP protested the match wasn't played by the agreed rules. What's fucking stupid about either?

Tournament rules appear to require you to finish the game and then file a protest - at which point it's up to an administrative decision. Therefore what choice was there but to finish the game?

Being NIP, the team that is expected to destroy all teams at the event, this protest is incredibly lame. They are supposed to be unbeatable, placing second in the group should not be a problem for them. They have lost before at lan and still done what NIP are supposed to do, win the event. Winning the event gets you money, fame and fans. Now i understand fnatics reactions since the protest was more or less "fuck you" to fnatic.

In some years NiP will look back and wonder why they didn't just let it go. They get so many favorable brackets and byes that if one things goes against the tide, and they still had a fiar chance to win mind you, they really should stay mum.
