First details for DreamHack Winter

DreamHack have announced the first details for the Winter event, set to feature the largest ever Counter-Strike tournament prize pool at $250,000.

It seems the Swedes organizing the historic tournament are content with the way things are as aside from maps they have kept the same exact tournament structure from the Summer event.

A big change however is in the map pool for DreamHack Winter, as they have opted to go for the regular versions of the maps, ditching the SE versions and choosing Valve's own de_mirage.

de_dust2
de_inferno
de_nuke
de_train
de_mirage

DreamHack Winter will once again use the GSL style group stage format, with a total of sixteen participants divided into four groups of four in the group stage. Playoffs will be played in single elimination best-of-three mode.

With a total of $250,000 being given out, each of the sixteen participants will win prize money, while the winners will go home $100,000 richer. There will be no third place decider.

1. $100,000
2. $50,000
3-4. $22,000
5-8. $10,000
9-16. $2,000

Of the sixteen teams, two are already announced as NiP and Lemondogs have qualified from the Summer and Bucharest events. It is unknown why n!faculty doesn't hold a spot from winning DreamHack Valencia.

DreamHack Winter will take place in Jönköping, Sweden starting on November 28th with the final day of the event being December 1st. HLTV.org will be on-site to provide you full coverage of the event.

Yup, you're right. Even 9-16 won't lose money (assuming they are Europeans), so even teams with no organization backing can come if they get a slot.

I really don't understand this mirage thing. Like we have a lot of competitions going on still besides DHW that are using mirage_ce - so now teams have to practice both ? I think the Valve Mirage is shit, but if it was to be introduced into the cycle, at least give people like a good month or two with tournaments using the map and etc.

4 groups of 4 they each play each other, 12 games per group, 48 games, considering 2 maps take about 2 hours lets say its 2.5 hours per game best case scenario with 30min for some delays if you want viewers then the top 2 teams in each group have to have their games casted, thats 24 total games casted best case scenario with each game about 1 hour long thats 24 hours of gameplay not counting delays which always happen. if you want GOOD coverage of groups with a bo3 format you need to dedicate 2 solid days to it if you want a bo3 look at TI3, only 16 teams and yet they still needed 3 days of prelim matches, and thats only a bo2 OR we can have shit coverage of the best event of the year with all bo3 games sqashed into 1 day with maybe 8 games being casted total viewers' choice

Entitled child, valve doesn't owe anyone anything. They made a product, you bought it. They could have stopped there but they give up some of their profits to promote the scene.

Only the fact that they advertised said product (esports cases and keys?) saying that the money will be used for the tournaments. Thus valve does owe it in some sense.

i had a problem with his "community made the prizepool and valve only gave some of it to the prizepool" of course they only gave a portion of it to the prizepool, what are the supposed to do? make the skins for free? and no, the community didnt make all of it. some is coming from DH sponsors.

I find it hilarious people actually believed that they wouldn't when they sponsored alot of the prize. But yes, ofcourse they do, they've tried shoving their shitty maps down the communties throat for as long as I can remember. And as usual, NiP goes along with it.

Sure, sure. Which is the sad part. But I guess they still see them as "their money" even though the community made it possible. Such a bad move. Jesus christ. They must be aware that they community hate their shitty maps so I dont see why they would force them to play on those maps if we sponsored it.

You just can't say they are sponsoring, we knew since the update that we were paying keys for the CSGO tournaments so actually this is our money and they didn't spend 1euro for that tournament. I thought they were in the good way, but that was only a matter of time before they deny it and implent their own shitty mirage in the competitive CS. Don't even know why I thought this tournament could be as good as I expected, this is VALVe after all

Seriously? What the fuck is it? Why do they have to change the mappool, and even though I would be more or less ok for 4 of these 5 maps, how the fuck do they put the VALVe version of mirage here? That's just hilarious how this map is fucked up. I just hope the community and the pro players won't be ok with it. For the first time we have a major tournament in CSGO I was really expecting something better. But come on that is shit shit & shit, tbh I would enjoy more a 10k$ tournament with the other maps than this. I really hope it won't stay like that. cmon mirage, rly???????

I'm talking about how DHW has a map pool which is totally different from the current default one (aka _se maps). Compare de_mirage to de_mirage_ce and tell me you don't need different setups/strats for VALVe -s de_mirage. e// And how many teams actually want to play VALVe -s de_mirage as pracc ?

I know that de_mirage and de_mirage_ce are different maps. Still, what has this anything to do with finding pracc? You mean you are not able to find pracc for de_mirage? If it's in the map pool then obviously all the teams thinking of going to dh or playing quals to dreamhack will pracc it. So what's the problem?

That's because CGS was multiple games for $500k. This is the "single biggest prize pool for CS ever". CPL Summer 2006 was also for multiple games.

Yup, I'm mad. Funny that Valve uses the community-given money to dictate a map pool consisting of maps that neither the community nor the professional teams wanted. Except for NiP of course, who seemingly never really stood up for what the community or other teams wanted but did the opposite, stand up for what Valve wanted and use their influence to get the community and other teams to accept Valve's say. And I wouldn't be surprised if Valve doesn't listen to the other teams that clearly stated their dislike for fog, chickens and the new mirage. It's a 250k tournament, it's not like teams will not attend because of chickens. The whole thing could be played out on aim_dust and teams would still attend. And in the end all the players will go "chickens aren't that bad, sure I thought they made no sense whatsoever and damaged competitive play, but they're not so bad..." like they do with everything else in the game that just straight up doesn't belong in neither CS nor any good competitively viable FPS. Are there no people in the professional scene left with passion for CS that stand up for what they want? Almost every single known pro has at one point or another stated how broken the game is in some regards, and even though not a single major gameplay-related thing was changed, everybody just forgets, grows to accept it and dries their tears with stupid skins.

Considering all tournaments have just signed a deal to co-operate and force the maps anyway. The fact that ESL are actively working with Valve to have a cvar command in the works for the removal of chickens. The fact that fog isn't even an issue anymore. The fact that there are also some more changes to official maps.

"Considering all tournaments have just signed a deal to co-operate and force the maps anyway." This doesn't make me know little, that is in fact exactly what I predicted would happen. As for the rest, I very much welcome that, I in fact didn't know and didn't expect that. But "fog isn't an issue anymore" and "some more changes" won't convince me that Valve is in fact interested in a constructive map designing process involving professional teams and their input or community input for that matter.

Well there is no fog anymore on the standard maps. That has been removed. The changes that have been done to said maps have been based on feedback from the community. It's funny how people talk about that Valve don't take much feedback, yet they always do.

Last time I checked there were massive amounts of dust and fog, especially at the start of a round, which is crucial on a map like dust2, where in the first seconds there could be a clash happening that requires you to be able to see perfectly clear. Then again, last time I checked was rather long ago. How have they been based on community input? They read stuff and take the suggestions they wanted to hear in the first place? What I always criticised the most ist that they don't argue openly about anything they do, yet want people to write articles about the reasons as to why they want something and also to get the whole community to like it as well (as could be seen in the response to the movement changes suggestions). Look at train and inferno, the two maps that probably received the most updates. What exactly about the changes was community-driven? People want to go under trains, now you can't even throw grenades or look through under them, people wanted a wider banana, now we have a railing less in mid. They wanted to graphically enhance mirage, why did they then go ahead and mess with a perfectly designed map gameplay-wise, that is probably the most played and liked map in the game right now? Why is everything sealed off and why can't there be a transparent and open process of development? Not only does it feel like they don't listen, it is a fact that they don't speak.

Valve mirage is actually very good. It has better visibility and new stairs on A are really good addition if you ask me. Valve needs to remove fog and unnecessary items on map that you could stuck onto. Also a wider banana @ inferno would be appreciated.

I'm a casual player who only play in mm but I follow the pro scene so I know the maps etc. Imo it's good move to make pros play those casual maps too because that way there won't be that huge gap between casuals and pros. Also I think it's way better that everyone plays the same maps, even if they "suck", than to have eleven version of each maps. That way the pros can whine so that valve fixes the maps/makes them better, which is better than having those eleven different versions... And tbh _se versions are outdated apart from fog and chickens. And btw, there are still time for Valve to make those non _se maps better!

16 teams are totally fine, considering they have to wait for the whole BYOC tournament. it's a competetion and having a limited team list is making it more exciting. no team can go relaxed into any game. never saw a really big tournament with more than 16 teams.

Oh no, the DRAMA! If we learned something since the begining of the CSGO era is that this retarded community needs to have stuff shoved down her throat. The latest "cry me a river" is the map pool, which is like 90% the same shit, and still people declare stuff like "broken map cycle... on the brink of being unwatchable". This about the biggest tournament in recent history or maybe ever. App chickens are the dark side. Can't you all just grow the fuck up?!

Are you completely retarded kid? The map pool were already at bit small in prior versions of CS, and it were getting tedious to watch the same maps over and over again. In CS:GO the competitive map pool is even smaller?! Wtf did you think would happen, we would celebrate? Grow a pair of brain cells will you?

Prize distribution needs to be tweeked, to big of a gap between 1st and 2nd. Not enough incentive to attend unless you're a top team. 1. $70,000 2. $40,000 3-4. $25,000 5-8. $15,000 9-16. $3,750 much better

top teams will always try hard so as to stay at the top. But a mid level team with aspirations to get better will definitely think about attending if they think they have a shot at $15k or even just three thousand dollars.
