ESL, ESWC & more update map pool

The biggest CS:GO tournament organisers have announced a major overhaul to the map pool that will be used in the future.

All SE versions of the maps have been dropped, with the event organisers instead choosing the regular versions, while picking Valve's own de_mirage and two custom maps: de_season and de_cache.

The move comes as part of a collaboration between several tournament organisers which is aimed at ensuring that all events are played under the same conditions.

Earlier on Sunday, DreamHack had already announced that it would drop the SE map versions. Copenhagen Games, ESWC, and SLTV StarSeries will follow suit, a statement from the league cooperation has confirmed.

The new map pool looks as follows:

  • de_dust2
  • de_inferno
  • de_mirage
  • de_nuke
  • de_train
  • de_season
  • de_cache

The timetable for this new map pool to come into effect is the following:

Immediately:

  • EPS Germany
  • Copenhagen Games
  • Slap Live
  • Dreamhack

October 7th:

  • EPS France

October 10th:

  • RaidCall ESL Major Series One

October 14th:

  • ESWC
  • SLTV StarSeries
  • Gaming.dk

why all the negativity? most 'standard' maps have been tweaked and balancing + visibility is actually better. the improvements to de_inferno and de_train are massive, with the latter beeing way more balanced than before. inferno halls + bench and some other minor improvements are also benefiting competetive play. plus the huge fact that matchmaking is supposed to be the entry point for casual players into a competetive environment. to achieve that this was a necessary step, which is supported by GeT_RiGht btw.

ahahahahahah People make such a scandal out of this little things. People must accept the change, for better or for the worse. People in 1.5 had to change to 1.6, etc etc etc and besides, valve's map is not so bad. I prefer the _ce, but it isn't the end of the world. Players just need to get used to it. Although I think the others maps should be update without chickens and random noises to fucking throw away your position.

What he tweeted has nothing to do with the game or Valve, it was to do with NiP. "About the tweet - This has nothing to do with VALVe, the AMA and so on. This has to do with NiP, the organization and it will be AWESOME if u ask me! ... I think it will come out next week!" Proof: reddit.com/r/GlobalOffensive/comments/1n..

They're gonna stick it to out til every single other league in NA changes it. Then they'll put up a poll and say they're listening to the community when they keep the se maps. Meanwhile their teams will keep placing 8th internationally

It's only going to get bigger. There is a reason why all leagues are starting to co-operate. Future changes look to be set down the path that the community can chose which leagues they can fund next year from the eSports Cases.

I assume u either, suck at go, or never play something else then matchmaking. de_mirage sucks chickens on de_inferno ?!?!?!?!?!? garbage just chilling around on every map, you can even shoot the cans on de_dust2, bet you like that animal sound on specific places on de_inferno? Dafuq still fog remains on some maps you cant look under trains anymore, its like a fucking maze.... WE JUST NEED CLEAN AND CLEAR MAPS, SO PLAYERS CAN DISPLAY THEIR SKILL INSTEAD OF WANKING TO EVERY GRAPHICAL DETAIL YOU SKILLESS RETARD but ofcourse you dont realize all of this cuz A. Ur bad and B. you only play matchmaking which doesnt have anything in common with a real teamgame ;) Good day to you Sir

Yeah I'm bad and play only mm... So? Pro's will play official maps and last time I checked I haven't seen them bitching about it. It's a fact and you're stating opinions :-) Clear maps Yada yada yada. I assume you don't play mm, so... stick with the versions you prefer. Btw: I've found the thread on new mirage being announced and responded to guy that claimed tournaments will never use new mirage.

If valve would use the skin and key money for their own tourneys dreamhack would never ever use valve maps ;) The only pro's who are super exited about playing valve maps are NIP, who surprisingly have been in seattle and meat with csgo devs. Dude are u really that dumb?

Great. So thats why they were doing a major overhaul to the chickens on inferno. Lowered sound and pattern. Good job, Valve.

this is why valve was very much concerned for chickens in every updates.... everything is fine but mirage looks horrible... please add mirage_ce

You guys are really short sighted. You want Valve support to keep your gaming growing and the prize pools larger. They support your game, create a method to help the players support the game, and boost the DHW prize pool to the biggest yet. All that they are asking is that the maps you play on are the ones they provide to all players of their game naturally. If someone watching the game thought it was cool and wanted to play on one of the maps, and then joined the game and found they couldn't inside the MM.... then that defeats the whole purpose. Either accept the blessing that is Valve's support and play on the only SLIGHTLY different maps, or continue to whine and get left in the dark ages. You sound pretty foolish. It's not like Valve doesn't listen to feedback. They are clearly trying to make things better, but a game dev doesn't work at the rate of say Volcano. Have patience and be glad that they care enough to want the major tournaments using official maps and expanding the player base.

The maps aren't bad but if the fog could be removed 100% and chickens optional with a console command that'd be great.

"and then joined the game and found they couldn't inside the MM.... then that defeats the whole purpose." That's on Valve themselves. They didn't update the _se versions. But I agree, it is best for the game if both the casuals and professionals play on the same maps. And yes, the more competitive exposure the non-_se versions get, the likelier it becomes that improvements to make them competitively more viable will be attempted. I like the uniformity as well. There's just one thing that I don't like about this: There is much that should be changed about the maps that would make them competitively more viable and interesting to see teams clash on. And I fear now that Valve handles the competitive map pool, crucial improvements and fundamental changes will not be attempted. Before, the community and pro scene had the chance to design their own maps for competitive play and have Valve consider picking them up with some compromises here and there, as could be seen with ESEA picking up Volcano's version of train. Now, we are the ones that have to make compromises and hope that Valve will listen and think about what made the classic maps as great. I'm not saying they will never do that, but judging from their general updating behaviour and their approach of designing mirage, I doubt it will be for the better of competition.

I suppose what is most confusing to me is that this surprises people. Did you not see this coming? This is the best thing that could happen for the future of the game. I agree that chickens are stupid and fog is no good. Fog is either already fixed, or almost all the way there so I consider that a non issue. All of the complaints over the maps are based on pre-existing maps for comparison. If mirage_ce didn't exist then what would people think? Would they analyze the A site cover and determine that for some reason it was lacking in a specific situation? Would they complain that set smokes are hard to throw? Or would they just stop whining and spend a few moments and learn new ones? Do you think VeryGames won't have perfect set smokes the first time they play this map in tournament? If you want to be lazy and be left behind that's your own choice, but others will accept this being the best for their own potential future winnings and adapt and continue to be at the top. I do think Volcano is a major asset to the map balancing equation though. Valve has already taken much of his advice (nuke), including new cache in Bravo, etc. Is it impossible to believe they won't continue to do so and/or hire him? Valve can't run beta versions of new maps like _ve versions are. Maybe Volcano versions are necessary to test ideas before they make a wide release. Obviously this is preferred to having the dev scared to make changes and/or have hasty changes made and face temporary imbalance until they can be fixed. This is better in all ways for the game and the players who care for it. Bigger game = bigger dev support = better able to improve the game and maps

Not only am I not surprised, I saw this coming a long time ago. Yes, people would probably not take Valve's mirage if it was the original one and propose changes that would resemble exactly what mirage_ce is now. But if you are using this argument, you are making a fundamental mistake. Not only are there objective means to determine a map's competitive viability, but when you say people don't accept change simply because they don't want to give up what they're used to, then what is it that Valve does? - they are changing things for change's sake, simply because they want to give up what the game used to be. Why did they have to change mirage so extensively and not only graphically? Why did they change inferno and train so massively? It's not like anyone complained about the 1.6 and Source versions, and people gladly played on those maps for years. Why change a running system? And like I said, there are things that make maps more or less competitively demanding, and the 1.6 and Source versions served that purpose better. Also, there are ridiculous bugs on the maps still. I agree with you that in theory this is the best direction for the mapping part of the game. Having Valve be involved with that will, as they have shown with the map packs, ensure that map makers can be rewarded for their work and it will get people into competitive map designing more. There are downsides to it as well though. Having the maps be in Valve's control means that they're widely out of our influence's range. If we were to design our own maps and pick them up, like ESEA did with de_train_ve, - if Valve then wanted to have the offocial maps be played, they would have to give reasons as to why their train is better than Volcano's or why their thoughts on how the map should be like are more reasonable than the community's and the players' thoughts. I would love to be able to discuss with Valve about that, but now that they have full control, why should they? Like I said, I'd like to be optimistic about it and assume they will eventually be more constructive and welcoming towards discussions, but again, judging from their past behaviour, especially considering mapping, I wouldn't count on it. The last part of your post I can't quite understand. How does picking up non-_se maps make the game bigger?

Just to clarify I am not really disagreeing with you here, more like continuing my train of thought in our reply chain. And your point is legit in regards to why Valve would arbitrarily change something like Mirage. I don't know why they did it, but I am sure there are other factors involved there considering the audiences they are trying to serve all at once. Not saying the new one is superior, but maybe having the vine roof on A site was a problem for some reason and skybox abuse would be thought of as unfair when new players fell victim to random blindness in an area that graphically doesn't appear that it should be vulnerable. (Mirage B site) Having said all that, I still think there is going to be a way to influence map play. Valve will probably be the first to admit they are unwilling to change the maps without good reason/testing, and there I agree with them. Having a centralized version of the map is essential as a control group. I do believe though that they will see the community as a means to test new ideas, and play test maps. If this change in map pool is being brought about as a way to attract Valve support for an event, then it at least begins the new trend. Will alternate maps to the official be immediately used in big tournaments? Probably not. But we have seen that Valve is not above talking to the community and absorbing good map ideas. The key will be some events/leagues/tournaments being able (without fearing Valve will drop their support) to include say _ve versions of maps when the official has been deemed imbalanced or dated. Sure it will be hard to see fully evolved competition on these maps because the motivation will be to perfect play on the official ones, but it may give enough information to come to a conclusion about certain features. I do not believe Valve will enforce only their maps very strictly if the goal there is to play test new concepts. Their internal testing teams probably are not adequate to really put a map under a microscope deep enough on their own. Without at least having a starting point for evolution (Valve's official maps) then there is no baseline to move forward. Using the same logic that Valve needs ample data to update maps, then we have to give say de_mirage enough high level play testing to make a case for such changes. People want their _ce mirage back, but they aren't accepting the fact that the best way to prove to Valve that some of the original Mirage concepts are vastly superior is to have enough testing on the official map to show its weaknesses. It is the tail wagging the dog sure, but at this point it's really the only good option forward. Sure the starting point could have arguably been further forward/better with the proven map concepts, but at least there is a starting point that includes Valve support and will give a consistent experience for newer players.

Nothing here to disagree with, everything you state is reasonable. I would only like to add that yes, at this point it seems to be the only option to take us forward, but I think there could have been a better option. If the competitive community first had designed maps after their liking (based on the original 1.6 and Source maps) and played those in tournaments, we would then be in a position where cooperating with Valve wouldn't mean starting out with maps that need large amounts of work done that they may or may not put in, but we could then have stronger arguments in the form of competitively established maps for making Valve be more accepting towards the players' thoughts. That's what I hoped Volcano could do for the scene. However, I guess all that's left for us at this point is to hope Valve will acknowledge the fact that the classic maps require rather wide workovers and that they will somewhere down the road decide to cooperate openly with the competitive community to try and get the classic maps to a state acceptable for both sides. I mean, if they want to have maps function differently, instead of taking away from the classic maps the very aspects that made them unqiue, why don't they just leave them be how they were always enjoyed and concentrate on introducing new maps? The quicker we find a common ground on the old maps, the sooner mapping efforts can be spent porting/pickung up cbble, contra, season, cache, tuscan, russka and introducing GO-only maps.

Exactly, over the years I had always the same opinion as you but people always whined about things they could get used on it, but no. Being like that, for example, old mirage and so, how is suppose to appeal new people to CS GO if they keep stuck with the old stuff? Well in general they won't they will keep having the same old player base. Because it's only appealing to the old timers and pros

mirage_ce was definately the best map in csgo, maybe even the best in all of CS history. If they force tournament hosts to use their poor copy of mirage, they should at least listen to the pro community. The rest of the maps is okay, if they fix some little things like chickens and fog.

Remove the fog. Remove the chickens. Remove your valve version valve. All mirage_ce needs is new building/wall skins so it looks a bit more "csgo fresh", doesn't need EVERY ANGLE and corner to be completely changed. Also train_ve is much better, methodically and logically made than the new de_train by valve.
