NiP: Not serious about MSI Beat it

Ninjas in Pyjamas member Robin "Fifflaren" Johansson has suggested that his team did not take the MSI Beat It! match against VeryGames seriously.

The Swedish giants failed to hold down a spot for the MSI Beat it! world finals in China after losing to VeryGames 2-0 in the semi-finals of the European tournament, which was played online.

It was NiP's first official defeat to VG since CS:GO came about, and in the hours that followed the game numerous people suggested that the Swedes had thrown the game due to the almost conflicting schedule between the MSI Beat it Finals and DreamHack Winter.

The Swedish event will start on November 28th, just five days after the grand final of MSI Beat it!, which means that teams who attend both tournaments will suffer from the jetlag effects of the long flight from Beijing to Jönköping and will have less time to prepare for the $250,000 competition.

Johansson has now hinted on reddit that NiP did not prepare for this match properly as the team did not want go to China.

Last week, it was announced that NiP will feature in a TV series that will follow the team over the next few weeks as they look to defend their DreamHack Winter crown.

As such, one extra tournament, especially one in China, could have an impact on the team's preparation for DH Winter and hurt the their chances of winning the $100,000 cheque.

Because that creates controversy.. it would make NiP look bad and make MSI Beat It look bad, that a team would forfeit out of a tournament because they want to prepare for another. Why risk being invited to a future MSI Beat It? Just show up and play the match and see what happens.

Well I'm sure Fifflaren wasn't supposed to say that..(that's why Xizt came out to sort of ease the outrage that's being thrown at them).. also NiP did nothing wrong at DH... how did they look bad? The match was played not following the rule set so they protested... after they lost following the right rule set they went over to shake hands and were denied and curse/spit at... I'd say NiP is the epitome of professionalism, something that is severely lacking in the CSGO world at the moment.

An example, Usain Bolt turns up to the worlds qualifiers, doesn't qualify to worlds events and turns around and says. Oh I skipped a lot of practice because I didn't want to go to the worlds as I am concentrating on the Olympics. That would be belittling the worlds and the other athlete's. Same thing here, why even bother going for the qualifiers if you are not going to commit?

They never threw the match, go look at Xizt's twitter, they were never going to the China finals MSI knew it, they were however actually playing to win the $5000 online prize, VG won it fair and square. This is just horrible link bait reporting trying to get more hits for more ad revenue.

No what Fifflaren said was they weren't going to China, anything beyond that is people reading into something and putting their own meaning behind the words. I work in Journalism, this is just a crappy link baiting story nothing more. EDIT: Not to mention this just harms the entire community, do you think any other pro team or player will now do an AMA on Reddit or even post replying to peoples questions on ANY site including HLTV? Or will they be too worried some wanna be blogger will twist their words and try and make a story out of nothing? This post just destroyed the trust.

What Fifflaren actually said was they weren't going to China end of story. Anything more that that is a combination is English not being his native language and too many children who follow CS reading too much into what someone says.

I see what you mean now, however I was looking at his answer to the full question. They asked this, in relation to the VG match "Did you really consider going to Asia when you played Verygames in the semi final" not "Did you really consider going to Asia" Then he says "No not really" which would suggest they were not bothered about the VG game but as you say it is probably down to his English. As for the children bit, pretty harsh :P

You hit the nail on the head. This article is so pointless it is hilarious. It is saying nothing about nothing--yet another sensationalist HLTV post. On top of that, only a few days ago, some members of HLTV staff were in one of the threads making fun of the CS:GO reddit. I wouldn't be surprised if there is an agenda here to discredit other people from turning to reddit; I don't have much support from this theory other than Richard Lewis' accusation that HLTV play dirty and some of their jokes on this site, but it's possible.

I agree with you, and HLTV has hurt it's own rep with this story but they won't care as long as they get views on it and the associated advertising dollars. At least on Reddit you can downvote horribly stupid and self serving posts like this 'story'

You must being going off only one comment that I made, if you read my other comments I have suggested that it has been a mix up with the question. The question was asked in relation to the verygames match and it looks like Fifflaren has answered it as a general term and not to do with the semi-final. I am not reading into anything, I just gave my opinion and now knowing all the fact's I can see that it was not meant to be disrespectful, it just came across that way. Considering him and Xizt had to justify themselves I couldn't have been the only one who thought that and I am 100% sure NIP don't give a fuck what I think personally more of the community as a whole.

I'd say that's more disrespectful... 'we're going to pull out of this tournament because we want to prepare for another tournament' It's like saying MSI Beat It is a shit tournament and is not worthy of our time. EDIT: The best way would have been what they did, minus Fifflaren being an idiot and admitting to it.

I think MSI Beat it would understand the situation a bit more if they spoke to them and told them it was difficult to travel and come back prepared for another event closer to home rather than just not bothering. You are right, Fifflaren probably should have just said VG beat us fair and square. I think it is just mind games, because now VG have beat them that gives VG a lot of confidence.

It's tactical. Of course nip would play the match. If you had the chance to play against one of your closest competition in a match you don't care about, why wouldn't you? You'd get to see their tactics, if they've changed anything, and get a sense of where they're at for when you play them next and actually have to win.

Makes no sense for them to lose to VG on purpose. If they didn't want to play they would have left the tournament. All they have done now is broken the barrier for VG to stomp them at LAN and fiffy is just trying to repair it

expected, but to still mention it was a pretty bad move. It's almost like taking the victory from VG, who have played so much to get to finally beat NiP.

Doesn't matter.... no win over NiP matters online. Do it on LAN where it truly matters... this doesn't take away from their win at all, they aren't the first time to beat NiP online, NiP has been beaten by teams online much worse than VG.. Beat them at DHW and no1 will give a fuck about NiP not giving a fuck in an online match.

He answered "Not really" to "Did you consider going to Asia when you played VG in semi-finals?". He most likely meant that if they qualified, they would probably have considered forfeiting and therefore not taking the trip as it's too close to DHW. The question should've been "If you would have qualified for the main event in China, would you have gone?" EDIT : See Xizt's twitter post. "We would never throw a game. MSI orga knew beforehand we wouldn't attend the LAN Finals because of DHW too close. Still doesn't mean we would just throw a $5000 online tournament down the drain." This news article is kind of a dick move anyway...

Exactly. But, for VG, this would mean a tournament where they would be the favorites if they were to beat NiP, so I would guess they actually prepared more for this particular match than any other, compared to NiP doing their usual 5k online tournament prep. With that in mind, two teams that are as close as these two are (let's not kid ourself, VG has been close many many times), that difference in motivation should be enough to merit a VG win without considering NiP throwing in the towel. Besides, it seemed like several of the NiP players had an off day that day, which is deemed to happen every once in a while. Usually they pull of a win anyway, but against VG with this difference in motivation they shouldn't really stand a chance if the players aren't on top of their game.

I don't agree. Guessing the teams' tournament preparation is irrelevant. VeryGames and NiP are in the same boat here... Dreamhack Winter is worth, potentially, 100K$ so VeryGames have just as many reasons to throw away the game as NiP in this case... Which we can speculate as much as we want it doesn't matter. Besides, NiP were on a bad streak coming into this game.

i think people are missundersting the issue. NiP didn't want to go, but they still wanted to win the 3000euro prize from the qualifier, + it's good serious prac in tournament conditions. They did not lose on purpose. There is no disrespect to other teams, if they won and didnt go, the invite would trickle down like it always does.

I believe the same as you but some says that is could have been kinda disrespectful to take the money and throw away the invitation to the "real" tournament. Plus Could this afflect NiP image ? Refusing to go to tournament of this size or so and after bein invitated ? I can't tell about the management decision in NiP but if they were focusing hard on the DHW this loses could suit them no ? That's why ppl thought of this scenario... I actualy believe this is some crazy fantasy (enough to have many ppl believing it) but I'm curious to know if there could have had repercutions/cost for NiP if they would have won the tournament and turn their back.

Agree with what gomez is saying. The question was if NiP considered going to asia. Fiff's reply was 'no'. However the HLTV article is stating it as "NiP did not prepare for this match properly" because "the team did not want go to China".

I agree, but if the case were them throwing the game it would have been equaly disrespectful. If they were to drop out, they might have been banned from the next tournament that MSI hosts, but throwing a game to not risk a ban would mean they took the cowards way out and basically said "Hey, we won't admit that we didn't want to go to your tournament's final, but we sure would like to come back next year when it's more convenient for us." It was the cowards way out and really disrespectful to VG if it had been the case. Shame we will never know for sure.

It doesn't show any lack of respect. He's not saying they lost the match against VG on purpose, he's saying that they weren't gonna go to China even if they did beat VG. Which makes a lot of sense, seeing as the MSI tournament has way less money for them to win. The fact that hltv makes it look like he said something completely different doesn't mean that hltv is right.

Such a "smart" desicion. How could he say this even if this is the truth. It is not professionally. If you didn't want to go to the tournament why you played then? And after that he declares that they played in half of their power. Such a shame on NiP.

You're just retarded. They played for the money obviously. They didn't even make it so some other team got to go, and if they would have have won vs VG and then declined, VG would have gotten that spot to China instead, so whats your problem? And yes, I answered your question.

the only disrespect here is from the hltv and vakarm admins who are misinterpreting information and spreading it as the truth. Stay classy guys! NiP are true professionals and would never do something like that. I also feel sorry for VG seeing as now hltv has printed this bullshit as gospel, all of its devout morons will hold this against them. It's funny how cadred.org hasn't tried to discredit VGs win.

I agree with this, but at the same time it would make some sense putting one of the largest prize pool LANs for CSGO before MSI.

Wasn't DHW announced first? So MSI should have chosen better dates... I might be mistake here though.

No idea. The first news about the DHW2013 on HLTV is the one with the PP announcement and the date ( hltv.org/news/11436-first-details-for-dr.. ) But I assume the exact date could be found before on the DHW website and btw this event is always around the same dates...

Delete this post, it's misreporting. From Xizt's twitter: Richard Landström ‏@OfficialXizt 33m We would never throw a game. MSI orga knew beforehand we wouldn't attend the LAN Finals because of DHW too close. @HLTVorg (1/2) Richard Landström ‏@OfficialXizt 32m Still doesn't mean we would just throw a $5000 online tournament down the drain. @HLTVorg (2/2)

Watching the game i had the idea that NiP werent performing even close to what they are capable of, dunno if it was the mindset or it was just a bad day, regardless of VG playing very well obviously. With this being said, i dont think NiP "threw" the game intentionally, they could had the wrong mindset and not trying too hard, but still it isnt the same as throwing a game. VG won and deserved to win, rest doesnt matter.

At this skill level, the difference between not playing seriously and loosing deliberately is quite small. Or do you really think the gap between VG and NiP is so huge that NiP hoped to win vs VG without paying to much attention to this match ?

The gap isnt huge thats for sure, but its still there as small as it is currently. Of course NiP didnt or will never win vs VG without paying to much attention, thats stupid to think. It just felt NiP didnt played at their full potential, you can perfectly see it in their game if you pay attention, not talking about bad aiming or anything, just plain movement/tacts.

I don't like NiP, I dont want them to win, but obviously it was on propouse. And I would do the same if I had in 5 days "the biggest" cs:go tournament at the moment. NiP did correct thing. Same as golden5, or other pro teams lost matches to go 2nd in groups for not facing stronger enemies, NiP did the same thing but looking for the future event. I lose because I have bigger chances to win my real goal.

Disrespect to NiP fans, they should feel ashamed of themselves. You play for the emblem, organization whatever. It's not normal to lose games for whatever reason, you always have to play your best. It's the same in football. If Chelsea have an important Champions League game, they will bring on their 2nd squad, lose against Sunderland and win that "important" CL game, if they win it of course. Those 3 points can be costly at the end of the season. But I mean, there are things you can and can't compare in this situation. Obviously you would choose 250k $ over 20k$ or whatever the amount is for the MSI tournament. Karma, psychologically etc, just because they threw this game, next time they meet against VG, they can lose, but I dont't really care though. All I'm saying, you could play every game 100%, because you thousands of fans and you don't want to dissapoint them, which NiP did.

Of course he says they lost on purpose. VG finally broke their mental barrier versus NIP. They could've won numerous times already, the only thing holding them back was that barrier. ' By saying this Fifflaren obviously tries to rebuild VG's mental barrier, giving them the idea that they didn't win because they were better, but simply because NIP let them.

First off he didn't ever say they threw the match, all he said was they didn't consider going to asia and we now know why. For thoose of you who don't know they spoke to MSI about it and told them they would not attend due to DHW beeing right after which basicly means that if they had won the entire thing online they still wouldn't have gone to asia. Second, this is a perfect example of grasping at straws there is no hard evidence of the game beeing thrown its all speculations and all it does is creata drama in the community thats no good. Third, grow up learn to read what is actually beeing said and for christ sake don't trust everything you read on the internet.

This is what was actually meant on reddit.. for those people that can't read properly. Question - "Was going to china actually possible ?" Answer - "Not really, its too close to DHW" Nowhere did fliff say they didn't take the match seriously... why would they not take £5000 seriously ? lol even if they won they didn't have to go to china. Idiot news poster.
