CPH Games structure revealed

The organisers behind Copenhagen Games have revealed the structure of this year's CS:GO tournament.

Between April 16th and 20th, some of the world's strongest teams will be in Copenhagen for yet another edition of the prestigious Danish LAN event, which will feature a CS:GO tournament with €26,000 in cash prizes.

All participants will be seeded according to past achievements and will then be placed in one of these three seeding pots: high seed, low and seed and challengers.

Each group will feature one team from the first two pots and two teams from the last pot. All group matches will be played in a best-of-three format, with the top two finishers moving on to the main bracket, whereas the bottom two will be placed in a separate tournament, with lower prizes.

Øksnehallen will host CPH Games

After the group stage has been completed, we move on to the double-elimination playoffs, in which the Upper Bracket will use a best-of-three format, while the Lower Bracket will use a best-of-one format.

The map pool for the tournament features just five entries and looks as follows:

  • de_dust2
  • de_inferno
  • de_nuke
  • de_train
  • de_mirage

Meanwhile, the CPH Games organisers have indicated that the CS:GO tournament will begin on April 17th at 14:30 , so all teams have to be at the venue and ready to play one hour before this time.

CPH Games. One of the best events every year. I really enjoy the upper-lower bracket, and all the best-of-three matches. Cant wait! Lets see what happens with navi´s participation.

While it might be much better its very time consuiming to have a bo3. So for some tournaments and organisers it's not really an option. And it can also force you to have fewer teams then you usually want if you want to have a successfull bo3 dobbel elimination.

just make lower bracket in a bo1 and let them play during upper bracket, lower brackets will have less viewers (except for fans of a team) but its logic

but the final was one of the worst in CSGO history. It was only 1 map, which was too much one-sided (i think NiP won something like 16-2)

Yea they should have done 3 bo3's with one bo3 in favour of NiP.

Dont know why the article dosnt mention the none veto, prefixed maps bo3 structure.. Thats gonna work wonders with the current state of some of the maps not to mention its completely unfair :D Hope they use a map pool of 7 maps just to screw with the teams a bit more! News regarding the head admin should turn some heads aswell..

Its not good unless you can make an argument that supports your point of view. One would say that 3 prefixed maps might benefit one team a lot.

It does not necessarily benefit the teams. In the long run it might do though, you would have to prepare better for all maps if most tournaments were run like this. I don't know how top teams pracc maps, but I would guess that most teams prepare extra for nuke, inferno and dust2 as that's the maps that's played almost every time in a bo3. With this structure, you would have to prepare for all maps in the map pool maybe with the exception of one. It benefits especially the community to watch some new maps Other than dust2, inferno and nuke. Most people probably wouldn't agree with me, especially not the teams attending.

It greatly benefits certain teams. Most teams do "outs", that means you simply out a map completely cuz you have atleast 1 secure map ban at every elimination. That means most teams play 4 maps in their map rotation and they prepare for these. I would love if there where more than 5 maps in the map pool, but dont enforce poorly made maps. Id argue that enforcing those maps isnt beneficial to the community - as they (if hltv comments is our way of meassuring)- dont enjoy the maps that arent being played. I dont think theres a lot of difference between the teams going and the people at home, some maps are just down right bad and valve have yet to listen :(

I have heard that Copenhagen Games will use the admins as last year. Last year they completely failed. I cannot believe them dont hire admins, which have run professional events before.

Some of the admins are the same; some are new from last year. A big part of them have been admins for Copenhagen Games (And our other lans) for years and years. One upset team and an admittedly unclear ruling do not really qualify as "completely failed" in my book. We are not really in the business of forcefully substituting anybody from our organization every time something is not working out 100%. I should have fired myself in that case - repeatedly.

I agree, I like how Valve does it at The International with no true advantage when coming from the lower bracket. In their mind it's a big enough disadvantage that you have to play more matches to actually reach the final if you're coming from the lower bracket. I like it, but here you could more advantages with the team from winner brackets decide map and maybe even side. But I agree, not so fun to watch finals where one team have to win fewer maps than the other team to win the tournament.

that's only true if the grand final turns out to be one bo3, where it can be over after one map. Hopefully they'll have the grand final as 3 bo3's, or at least one bo5.

Interesting format. They used the same seeding structure last year too, right? I'm curious as to how this separate tournament for the bottom two in each group is gonna play out.

They've done that as long as I remember. But remember that a lot of local newbie teams are going to attend, so the teams in the B tournament are usually unknown for people outside of Denmark :) Unless some of the good teams fail REALLY hard, they're all gonna end up in the A tournament.

I really don't like the format honestly. I'm not really a fan of double elimination for big tournaments, and the idea of putting the losers of group stage on a different tournament feels simply insulting. "Okay, now we know you don't have enough skill, so we've prepared a special tournament for you lows, here is some pocket change, go get your ice cream." Even if it's good for teams who have travel costs and all to get there, it just doesn't seem right to do that kind of thing. It's much better to put the extra money in the same prize pool and split it accordingly so that even teams ending with a bad place can get some money. Works just as well, it's not insulting, and it provides more chances for challengers to make upsets.

only big orgs will be kinda pissed about having to play in the secondary tournament if they find themselves there. I think it's a good idea, because a lot of the local teams might end up there, and after all this is all about having fun and making friends etc... This is a great way to do that. With most of the top europeans teams going, this is what will happen for many teams, and it's obviously better than them playing 3 games, then doing nothing. Also, upsets aren't always a good thing, I think we should be rewarding teams that put in the work and effort, rather than giving less devoted teams a chance to progress instead. The less luck and randomness in a tournament the better imo.

Well, I don't see how making two separate tournaments make it more friendly or more fun (unless you remove any kind of prize pool in the secondary tournament, then it can completely change the tone of the games). I'm not saying the two last teams should be necessarily removed from the competition altogether, but there is no reason for me to make a separate tournament. Or if it's only about them doing something, then they can make a separate tournament for the losing teams without a prize pool. It still provides a show, and the teams traveled for more than 3 matches. Though we could argue that playing 3 x Bo3 is not bad at all anyway, just in terms of time spent playing. Also, there are plenty of other ways to make it more fun while keeping the losing teams occupied, like aim contests, play with the pros, etc... Yeah, upsets can't happen too often, it's not good for the scene in the end, but at the moment it's not like we have seen that many upsets.

Well, I guess since groups and UB are bo3, they will take quite a while to finish. So it kinda makes sense to put the two lowest teams in a group into a separate tournament, so other games don't have to wait for previous games to finish. But I'm with you when we're talking about the prize pot in the secondary tournament. If it's too big then it'd kinda be a waste to not include it in the main prize pot. I think it should just be a little something, no more than $1000, or maybe some hardware. But I like the idea of this secondary tournament being just a bit of fun, where everyone can enjoy themselves, rather than losing several games in their group, then losing in the LB and their adventure coming to an end.
