HellRaisers knock Titan out of EMS

HellRaisers have upset Titan 16-14 (7-8, 9-6) on de_inferno at EMS One to knock the French-Belgian side out of the $250,000 tournament and advance to the playoffs.

Titan started the match off well, as they scored a quick 5-0 lead as counter-terrorists on de_inferno. Yegor "markeloff" Markelov's HellRaisers fought back in a must-win situation though, winning four of their own.

In-game leader Kevin "Ex6TenZ" Droolans' double in B stopped the CIS-based team's winning streak, and made it 6-4 for Titan. Next three rounds would go for HR once more, as they were able to best Titan's defense.

Two kills from Edouard "SmithZz" Dubourdeaux stopped HR in B and tied the game at seven, and Titan won the final round as well to end the half with a narrow 8-7 lead.

Mihail "Dosia" Stolyarov's four P2000 kills won HR the second half pistol round, and a double from both him and Kirill "ANGE1" Karasiow secured the second round despite Titan's force buy effort.

HellRaisers celebrating knocking Titan out of EMS One

After a save Titan were trailing 8-10, but got within a round by quickly taking out Karasiow and Dauren "AdreN" Kystaubayev in B. Markelov then won a key one-on-one by jumping and surprising Adil "ScreaM" Benrlitom.

Markelov and Stolyarov then stopped Titan's A attack and forced them to save, making it 13-9, before a HR retake of A with Stolyarov still hiding in pit gave them round number fourteen.

An amazing four kill effort by Benrlitom, who finished the round with two taps in a one-on-two, kept Titan alive as they won two straight rounds, forcing HellRaisers on a save.

Titan faltered on their anti-eco as Stolyarov took down Droolans in a one-on-one, giving HellRaisers four match point to work with a 15-11 lead and Titan with low money.

A molotov based B attack won Titan the first round, and they quickly got within one. The final round saw a bombsite A stack for HR pull through, as they clinched a 16-14 win.

thanks to this group stage bo1 crap, we are now stuck with a less exciting bracket, as one of the leading teams has been knocked out. Can't wait for cph games to come around, only then will we know he truly is the best, seeing as we won't have the luck factor as we do here.

how is it as fair as it gets? copenhagen games have always done bo3 group stages, it's pretty crucial to have this format, especially since csgo is more random than previous titles.

the group stage is one of the most important parts of the tournament. If you do well, you are set up to have a easier road to the final. If the group stages are bo1 where there is a lot of room for randomness, this all goes to shit. It's pretty fucking obvious titan should be in the bracket, but all it took was 2 maps, and now, there is no chance. bo3 almost ensure that the truly best team has won.

If they were bo3s, Titan would probably have gone through. Sure they played better than them in those games, but could they do it a second time? We will not know, therefore, we won't know if the truly the best team went though.

Maybe in this one game, in this one map, yes. But play another map; if HR win a second time, then they are clearly the better team on this day, and should go through. If titan win the second game, and then the third, then they are the better team on this day, and deserve to go through.

That may well be the case, and if HR had won a second map, this would be all but confirmed. But whether or not the best team went through is still questionable. Who are we to say if titan would have won the next two maps? Only with a bo3 can we be sure the better team won. There is less percentage uncertainty.

How can you say that? Yes, I agree they played bad in both games, but playing more maps in a game will ensure that the other team is truly better, or that titan is truly better, if they happen to comeback.

But do we really want to ensure the other team is truly better? I don't think it is about who is truly better, but about who wins. They played plenty of matches to show their stuff, it is not like it was single elimination. They got STEAMED by virtus, and lost their mental game against HR. That ensures to me that they don't deserve to move on, regardless of if they're "truly better". To me this brings excitement into the group stages. If you only want "truly good" teams then why not just invite 8 teams, and not have group stages . . .

At majors like this, yes, the better teams should have a higher chance of progressing. I'm all for having bo1 games in lesser tournaments, where upsets have a higher chance of happening. But when there is this much money up for grabs, it seems just down right disregarding to deserving teams that have 2 unlucky/random maps. And I'm am not at all saying that this was the case with HR. But only with another map or two, will we have a better idea of who was more deserving to go through on this day.

Why? If they are not as good, they aren't as deserving as teams that put in more effort to get as good as they are. If lesser tournaments continue to run the bo1 matches, then they have a shot in those matches. And at the end of the day, everyone starts somewhere. Big teams didn't get where they are by starting in the biggest tournament around, and getting a few lucky wins. If they are good enough, then they will win. If not, they will lose, but eventually everyone gets better. Maybe they will be in with a shot next time.

They are pulling strats that the other team hasn't seen before because of how the other team practices. If HR had to play Titan 30 times to get out of group stages, Titan would be able to adjust to their play. That's why Titan only wins against NiP. Watching Titan play NiP is terribly boring in my opinion. Watching a team give the strats they have against an unprepared team and snag the win, but having the win mean nothing because then they just adjust and out-aim is terrible.

wow, that actually makes a lot of sense. Just to make sure I understand, are you basically saying as the number of maps approaches infinity, the winner is determined more and more by aim, as strats simply don't work anymore? That's a pretty smart way of looking at it if I understand correctly. It's a shame it's taken this long for the people I'm debating with to come up with this point. I guess the others just don't know why bo1s are actually better than bo3s. But this makes a lot of sense.

Why would they only attend bo3 tournaments? But yes, I agree that winning bo3 group stage tournaments gives a strong case for said team to be one of the best in the world. CPH games is harder to win than EMS/DHW after all. It's just a shame that all the big money tournaments run with this inferior group system.

I think it's pretty sad that tournaments are set up primarily for spectators. The absolute first group of people the tournament should be for is the players. It is their fucking job after all, yet they are being penalised because some spectators can't be bothered to watch more than one map, like you.

It's not like bo3 is impossible for spectators to watch, if it is so bad for you, why don't you just watch the bracket, which will obviously better as a bo3 group stage will ensure the best teams are in the bracket, meaning we have the best possible match-ups.

It's not impossible to watch, but bo1 is just more interesting. More pace, every mistake counts, surprises, quicker games, faster schedule etc. For example look what is happenging now.. delays! If it was bo3 it would take ages to finish the groups and that's boring for the spectators. I personally would prefer bo1 double elimination in the brackets but that's just me

You are entitled to your own opinions, but you have to look at the bigger picture here. bo3 is the best way to ensure fairness across the tournament. And bo1 games in the bracket is such a terrible idea. sorry.

To be fair, these tournaments are funded by the spectators seeing how the funded prize pool is from keys and skins. I would still watch bo3 in any format though. More games the better.

I don't see why we need to be bombarded with action, straight from the start. Let's have a bo3 group stage, that ensures the best teams make it to the bracket, meaning we have the best possible match-ups later on. All the action leads up to the quarters/semis/and final.

If everytime there would be same teams in the finals it would be boring. You are like Thorin, who thinks everytime it should be titan vs nip and all other finals are flukes... like wtf? That is just retarded. There should be the element of chance and randomness- that makes it exciting.

I'd rather fairness than upsets, and a little bit more excitement. If NiP and Titan are truly the best teams in the world, then the system should show that. They would be in the final every time, because they deserve it(if they are the best). They may not be the best. But only a bo3 will show that. They very well may have lost to HR still if it was a bo3. But because it was only one map, we will not know who the best is. It might be titan, it might be HR, just because they won one map. It's still questionable. With a bo3, we would know for sure.

what is there to discuss? a better team won, at least this time, groups are fair and each group has strong teams and look even, its Titan's fault they couldnt overpower HR as HR had a stronger game, thats all, so never underestimate a team like that because you gonna lose at the end. Nothing against Titans, love them, but they did make a big mistake pushing down mid when they were leading 5:0 and I think kucher aced them all or did -4 from t ramp winning that 1st rnd for his team and right after that the problems started happenning for Titans, so... ya... gg Well deserved for HR and I love seeing VP come out of the group as well! Great performances by VP and HR!

Did the better team really win? You don't know for sure in bo1, bo3 gives a far more assuring answer. If NiP lost to mouz, can you say the best team won? Obviously NiP are the better team, and there is a strong chance this would be shown in a bo3.

You can argue that bo3 is more relevant to see which team is better (and it's partially true) but my counter-argument is that in a group stage where you play bo1, you can also see which team has more mental strength, because eventually it will come down to win it or go home (the case of HR vs Titans). So I really believe that HellRaisers deserved to go to the next stage. Also, I may be wrong in this, but it seems to me that Titans are very good against teams whose strats they know very well (like NiP), but they are struggling when they face a team whose strats they don't know that well.

This is the first smart reply I have had so far :) yes I agree completely with your first sentence. But after this is where my opinion differs from almost everyone (it seems) else's. I would rather see the truly best team progress into the bracket, to ensure that we are given the best bracket possible. Rather than an average team take the spot of a great team, thanks to a lucky/random bo1. I'm not saying that HR won't deliver in the bracket, I really hope they do so we get some good matches, but with Titan out, we will have no NiP v Titan classic match-up.(Just one example)

I agree with your point of view, but in the end it is also a matter of preference. For example, I think it is productive for some competitions to have bo3 in group stage and for some competitions to have bo1, just to see how teams perform in different circumstances. However, in a competition with such huge prizes, I think it would've been better to have a bo3. I feel sorry for Titan now the same way I felt sorry for NiP when they lost the DH final.

And? In this format the groupstage is as exciting as in the playoffs. And the teams can't "play smart" (can't think of a expression) with the brackets. So... And yet, Titan lost 2 times. So they really deserve to go home.

they lost two bo1s, This isn't as hard to do as you think, especially with the group they had. They are obviously the best team in the group, and bo3 would most likely have shown that. Now the bracket is missing one of the best teams in the world.

The players put in thousands of hours to play 2 maps, because some spectators can't be bothered to watch 2 extra maps. Esports should obviously be influenced by the spectators, but not to the extent where games aren't as fair as they could be.

So? Thinking in the pratical way, the sponsors go where there is spectators. The chances of a upset is not that big. The better teams should pass, since it's double elimination.

It wasn't bo1. Not if you think about it. Because it effectively took two map losses for Titan to be eliminated... which actually is exactly the same number of map losses that gets a team eliminated in a bo3. Titan was beaten twice today, and one of those times they were rolled. They didn't deserve to advance, that's clear.

when you lose two bo1's, there is a chance that both games were unlucky/random, and the best team didn't actually go through. Bo3 would almost certify that truly the best team won.

copenhagen games uses a bo3 group stage format, and this almost ensures that the truly best teams progress to the bracket, as at least 2 maps being played in a game, means the randomness/luck factor is severely reduced.

and normally everything is fine, but every now and again, something like this happens, and once the novelty of HR upsetting Titan disappears, people will start to realise the bracket would have been that much better with them still in it. Which most likely would have been the case if a more fair system was in place during the group stages.

In tournaments like this, where titan had put in hundreds of hours of work in the last few months, get beaten by a team that admittedly haven't been practising all that much, upsets are bad. If it were in the bracket, and they won in a bo3, we could be assured that the better team won, as there is less percentage uncertainty. But we will never know if HR truly was better on this day, as the following two games were never played.

Jesus christ, are you ever going to stop arguing your incredibly pointless fact about the BO1? I've read a majority of your posts and they all point the everything being about luck and "random". Titan had their chance, if they were the supposed #1 team in the world (Which they never will be or should be linked to ever.) then all the effort they've put in would have assured them of winning at least ONE of their games. They failed, they were out-played. They've always been a team to fail on the big stage. NiP had NO trouble with the bo1 format, is that because they're random and luck was on their side? I'm not saying you're completely wrong, but titan were just out played, and if they couldn't bring themselves to win ONE map, then they don't deserve to go through. Not to mention time constraints and how much it'd cost them to add an extra day to the card just to satisfy your hunger for a bo3, even though a majority of tournaments in history have been double elim brackets, and you've always seen the greater team come out on top in those.

That is a fair point of view, but I think that at this kind of event, with this much money up for grabs, the better teams should always progress to the bracket. In other lesser tournaments, upsets are good for spectators and entertainment. But when deserving teams get an unlucky map, they should at least have another chance(second map) to show whether or not the first map was lucky/random or not.

Dude, what do you mean with "better" or "deserving" teams? You can't eliminate randomness from any game, be it BO1 or BO3, and you surely cannot say "team x practiced twice as much so they deserve to win/get to the brackets" because by that logic bellends like you would only shut up if the ultimate rankings would end up accordingly to the effort the respective teams put into preparation - and that is ridiculous. Spectators want to be entertained and that's what upsets do more than anything else. If the fucking tournament would use single-elimination in the group stage and Titan would have lost their first game then they would have been the WORSE team on that particular occasion, end of the story. If you can't deal with randomness then sports is not for you. You knew the rules beforehand so either shut up and watch the games or don't watch the tournament and wait for CPH.

You eliminate so much more randomness with a bo3, it's unreal. And yes, that's what I'm saying it should be like in major tournaments such as this one. In lesser tournaments, by all means, increase the chance of upsets by making matches bo1s. I don't know about you, but I want to see the best semis/final possible. And with bo3 group stages, we can greatly increase the chances that the best teams progress. If you knew what percentage uncertainty was, you'd understand what I'm saying.

Tell me how you ensure the "best semis/finals possible"? Do you think that it is a given that when, let's say Titan and NiP clash it's gonna be a hell of a game? I can't imagine how much excitement and what kind of a community boost it would mean for a team like VP or HR to make it to the final, let alone win this thing. If you want a healthy, powerful scene to watch then you have to allow for randomness - your "better teams" simply weren't better today, and that's when it counted. They knew that.

"If VP or HR do happen to make it to the final, then they deserve it" I'm talking about a tournament with a bo3 group stage. Only in this scenario will we know that they deserved to be there, and that they are were the better team in each of their match-ups. In bo1, the luck/randomness factor is much greater, so we will not know if the better team went through.

The teams that wins a match, where luck/randomness is minimised, ie, a bo3. With a bo1, you'll still have a high level of luck/randomness and will not not for certain if the better team won.

so what if I started pledging for BO5 instead of BO3 now? Now it would be easy to make out new factors that emerge and play into the equation: tiredness, hunger etc. It's the same when talking about BO1 VS BO3: there are factors involved in both which affect the games, but I can argue that Titan knew many months in advance that the group stage would feature a double-elimination BO1 and who their enemies would be - and they couldn't prepare for it adequately, which means that they were the WORSE team today and went home DESERVINGLY. Randomness is always involved and you can simply not say that there is less randomness in a BO3 than a BO1 because there are always factors that you don't take into consideration. Randomness is simply the word you use for these factors unknown to you.

So why else do almost ALL other tournaments except CPH use BO1 DOUBLE-elimination group stages? And how can you know that BO3 is perfect for establishing who is the "better" team at any given moment? Where are your scientific studies proving that claim? All you do is trying to convince people of your uneducated, arbitrary statement that "BO3 is the real thing" which a) nobody agrees with and b) nobody cares because people value emotions, excitement and upsets more than predictable games where the big names win most of the time, thus making watching games boring, damaging the scene as a whole and destroying the foundation for YOUR entertainment (and bitching).

Bo3 isn't chosen because organisers have to compensate for their lack of security and inefficiency. As I said before, in majors, it is way more exciting for spectators, and fair for players with fairer games. Amzing matchups with the best teams, is more exciting than upsets.

Since you don't react to my arguments I'll do the same with yours: bull-shit. Everybody knew what the groupstage-system would be and if Titans failed to deliver then it's goodbye for them, that simple. As somebody before me already pointed out to you: they even lost like a BO3 because they lost two straight BO1s in a row, one of which wasn't even a close game, so they practically lost a BO3 because to lose one means to lose two different maps in a row - which they did. Obviously they weren't the "better" team that day because better teams tend to win against teams that aren't top-tier, and even if they lose a map they don't lose two. The "better" team should show nerves of steel and be more experienced in situations like these, which, again, they didn't in two different, consecutive maps - and their opponents weren't NiP. This may lead to the conclusions that they weren't the "better" team that day, but will bounce back or that they simply aren't "better" than VP or HR from now on. Talking about "randomness" or "deserving wins" is nonsensical.

I'm not talking about GSL, I'm talking about bo1 v bo3 group stages. CPH games use a bo3 group stage format, with is far superior as it ensures the best team progresses to the bracket. More maps in a game, means less percentage uncertainty. And if spectators can't be bother to watch one, maybe two, extra maps, then I weep for the esports community.

copenhagengames.com/updated-csgo-tournam.. you are a new user obviously and you dont know why this format prevailed. back in 03 everyone had this discussion should we play mr 12 or 15? should we play all 30 rounds or just the 16? should we play double elimination bo3? the better solution for everyone was the bo1 double elimination group stage and bo3 playoffs. with this, players dont have to get super tired and play all day. also tournaments last fewer days, so the cost is lower, casters have an easier job to do and also there is a pressure on players to bring their A-game. and is better for the underdogs. So start thinking before you write you personal preference

uhh, As I said before, I have no problem with GSL so I don't know why you keep mentioning it. As for the the time/effort issue with bo3 that you mentioned. I think that it shouldn't be used all the time. But certainly with majors it is far more superior than bo1 group stages. If they are majors, they shouldn't be easy to win (relative to other tournaments). It should take more effort to win majors, as they are much more rewarding.

His predictions are consistently bad. I don't know why people here haven't noticed that. His so-called 'analysis' is consistently sentimental and biased. He tends to have too rigid an idea of what teams he thinks *should* win and *should not* win according to his Counter-Strike world-view. Titan already got beaten soundly on LAN just a month in a half ago, in Dallas. And yet lurppis just dismissed that performance in his article without offering any real reason as to why. Now that performance seems pretty relevant in hindsight, huh. Titan already showed us very recently that they're not invincible, but people just ignored it.

Respect for HR. Got loads of shit (deserved) over them for playing so bad, especially since removing public favourite Edward for Kucher. But then being able to bounce back like this, vs arguably the #1-2 team of the world, well played.

No, I rate them like 10-15 to be perfectly honest. They lost to coL at DH and iBP at ESEA global lan. How could a top team lose so many important matches against NA teams, and now eliminated in group stage? Like someone else said, they're only good against other top teams who they particularly practiced to play against.

Titan lost to a team, who played better than them.. but stop hating on them like they are shit? what about NiP? who lost to fantic big time at Dreamhack? no hate on them?.. so please just stop, they will come back even stronger!! A great effort from titan in the final few rounds. they threw too many on ct, and the anti eco when HR had 4 on B was so hard to watch. The last round though what happend when 2 titan players were wrapping from arch with 20 seconds, and they spent 15 trying to kill a guy in library and both of them died... just smoke/flash him and plant...

Bye bye Titans. Overrated team. Why the fuck do the casters call them #1 team? What have they won in the past months? Lost as usual against NiP at the DH (and also lost to coL) and at the ESEA Finals they basically only made it to the final because sgares dropped out of the server in the most important round and in the final they got stomped by iBP. Ahahaha "2014 will be Titans year" they said, and everyone who doubted it got flamed by a hord of fan-boys. I actually like them but their fans are so arrogant that it makes me kind of happy to see them drop out.

Did I say anything about HR? Nope. 2nd at ESEA. Yes, with only 1 European team attending. And actually they barely made it into the final. They played absolute shit and should have ended 3-4. Before the tournament all the fan-boys were like "lol, too easy for Titans, they will rape everyone". At the most important tournament they lost once again against NiP. Like they did in like 95% of all games against NiP during the past 2 years. No way anyone with a brain would rate them higher than NiP.

I believe the reason most people called them number one was having placed 1st and beaten NiP consecutive times in late 2013. Had they won DH they would've definetely claimed the number one spot. As we all know, they lost there and ESEA but they won DH invitational (was that the name?). I'm not saying they are/were number 1 as it was a tough choice, but considering late 2013 they had shown better results than most teams. In my opinion they were really good but quite inconsistent and of course you need to be consistent to be considered the best. Anyway, these results only make the scene more interesting. Hope the tournament brings us even better matches than the one we've seen yet.

95% xD ok. let it be, but they dont had shox or neither scream in lu. Than lurppis has no brain right? Just check the last 6 months (from 2013 okt) where VG played vs NiP. VG/Titan won 85% of the maps, they lost dh winter only in the semis. Just because of 2 bo1 loss here, doesnt change the rankings imo. I'll agree with u if NiP win this tourney.

Yes, if you look at the all-time-stats of NiP-vs-VG it really looks that bad for VG/Titans. VG/Titans had like 1-2 months were one could have considered them #1, but that's it. Neither in the the all-time-ranking nor in the recent ranking they are the #1. "Only in the semis". They already struggled in the group-stage and lost to coL.

I didn't, but 90% of his predictions are false. So i mean it overall, not only his yesterday predictions. Also it was a joke, now i see a shitty one.

You have to give HR even more credits than anyone else taking into consideration the fact how much crap there was put on them by childish kids saying they're bad ect and still they managed to paly all of their 3 today's matches great overcoming all of that pressure and dirt by the community and came out on top! Props to HR! g1 Its obviously not over yet and anything can happen, but the main thing for today to come out of the group has at least been successfully accomplished! Congratz!

Because its a HELL of a big day today, but yes, I agree with you, its not fair and not right to say Titans are bad and all that as they showed their usual GREAT game, its just HR are jsut as good as well and only little things decided the winner of the HISTORICAL match! gl Titans in the future <3

The tournament would be so much better if 1/2 of the group advance into the winner bracket and 3/4 into the lower bracket.

Maybe Titan should watch other teams play and learn something about them instead of only focusing on learning how NiP play in order to anti-strat them.
