ESL ESEA League prize distribution

The Electronic Sports League has revealed how the prize distribution for the first season of the ESL ESEA Pro League will be done.

Until the end of the year, ESL and ESEA will give away a whopping $1 million in cash prizes across two Pro League seasons, each one featuring the best teams in Europe and North America.

The first season will come to a close with the offline finals, held inside ESL's esports arena in Cologne from July 2-5, where eight teams - the top four from the European and the North American divisions - will square off.

NiP are currently leading the European division

ESL has now revealed that this season's $500,000 prize purse will surprisingly be distributed equally between the online and the offline portions of the league. A minimum of $2,500 is guaranteed to all 24 participating teams (12 per division), with the distribution being the following:

1. $18,000

2. $16,500
3. $15,000
4. $13,500
5. $13,000
6. $11,500
7. $10,000
8. $8,500
9. $7,000
10. $5,500
11. $4,000
12. $2,500

1. $18,000
2. $16,500
3. $15,000
4. $13,500
5. $13,000

8. $8,500
9. $7,000
10. $5,500
11. $4,000
12. $2,500

The eight teams in attendance at the offline finals will get full travel support from ESL and ESEA and will fight for the following prizes:

1. $100,000
2. $60,000
3-4. $25,000
5-6. $12,500
7-8. $7,500

This seems pretty stupid, the 4th seed from Americas which will be the most likely to go out in 7/8th place will walk home with 20k prize money, while some top tier teams from Europe aren't even in the playoffs.

So the league should change its structure every year based on the perceived strength of the teams? Because that's even more stupid. In every pro sports league you have to win x amount of games to make the playoffs.

this should have been revealed BEFORE the league has started so all participants are equally motivated. some teams could have thought that theres no difference between rank 9 or 12 and so if theres no hope to reach playoffs could lack performance in some matches. with this distribution, all teams should be now extra motivated even if u cant reach the finals, therefore i really like this.

ya but some teams got 6 games played, others got twice as much already, mouz even got already 15 (!) games played. some with standins to get it done. not sure they would have done that if they knew that every spot is way more important than it used to be. in other leagues and before, it was pretty much who cares if u place 7 or 10 f.e. if both wont be enough for playoffs.
