North American team compLexity part ways with Soham 'valens' Chowdhury following the player's own decision to step down from the roster.

compLexity cut a tormented picture in the past few weeks when, following a moderately strong showing at the iBUYPOWER Cup (overtime against Liquid, defeating Conquest), Kory "⁠SEMPHIS⁠" Friesen and his crew were unceremoniously knocked out of the RGN Pro Series group stage by Method.

It was also no secret that one of compLexity's players was struggling in an individual sense to make an impact on the game, as Soham "⁠valens⁠" Chowdhury's recent event showings attest.

valens steps down from coL's active lineup

The player informed compLexity that he was failing to reach his own expectations as a CS:GO player and would return to a focus on his career as a software engineer at Google, and would thus step down.

compLexity owner Jason Lake released a statement on valens's decision:

"We’d like to thank Soham for his hard work and contributions to the squad...He is a fantastic person and it has been a pleasure working with him," Lake said.

The team's remaining roster is now:

Kory "⁠SEMPHIS⁠" Friesen
Daniel "⁠roca⁠" Gustaferri
Timothy "⁠autimatic⁠" Ta
Joshua "⁠sancz⁠" Ballenger

valens has also indicated that he may return to the scene in the role of analyst or coach in the future.

compLexity will now head into the new year in a similar situation to that of other North American teams such as Cloud9 and Method with a hunt for a fifth permanent player looming on the horizon.

in a 5v5 aim_map match, say they add koosta/ryx/stewie2k, col would beat probably everyone in NA badly besides Liquid and C9. And with them they'd go toe-to-toe. Too bad that's not good enough to be good at actual CS.

I totally agree that koosta is a better AWPer, but not a better player overall. I think Semphis is a good enough AWP player on an NA scale, with above average pistol skills, and good rifling. I think another fragger on the level of roca would benefit the team more than a dedicated awper who would get to use his awp less because of Semphis-forcebuys anyways.

Koosta is also a much better pistol player. I would say they are about even on rifling at this point but if you gave koosta a better team and better opponents he would also most likely improve.

Better pistol player? Even rifling? Disagreed tbh, I might be wrong but Semphis just always seemed like a solid player to me, while koosta is one of those young hyped awpers who can play good against tier x teams.

I'm not saying he's god tier or anything but he could easily be the best player on a team like complexity along with roca. Koosta is really good with pistols as most good awpers are but he's also a solid aimer with rifles. He's like a slightly worse version of Niko before he went to a tier 1 team. Semphis was always pretty mediocre also. There are several reasons why he was the only guy to get kicked from the recent cloud 9 rosters. His performance being one of the biggest factors.

CS will never be a suitable career path, not due to lack of money support, but because of the extremely limited accessibility (only very few people who make friends with existing top players will ever get a small chance) Only school dropouts who plan to live on parents money for 30 years or 16- years old believe that CS career naive dream. I'm not fully disagreeing with you, but I think you have a skewed perception of these pros. Most of them became pro because they played in their free time and just happened to be extremely good at it, not because they dropped out of school and actively decided they wanted to fulfill some esport pipedream. And many pros actually do have degrees or are in school. What's wrong with having a degree and doing what you truly love for 5-10 years first, then starting your career later? No need to judge people for that. I personally played online poker professionally before starting my career later after it became illegal in my country.

Perhaps the most selfless player in all of North America. Smart guy, but his selflessness always jeopardized his own statistical output. Completely a "team-first" guy and very sacrificial. At times too selfless, would often sacrifice himself in very hairy situations trusting his teammates to get trades that would open up bombsites, otherwise he was constantly setting up his teammates and always dropping rifles for his teammates so he could go with a pistol or dropping them an upgraded pistol. If he had, say, Tarik or nitr0's aim and the confidence that comes with it he would be a really fantastic player. Guy has a masters in electrical engineering from Stanford last I checked. Smart guy; logical as well.
