Astralis see off CLG

Astralis have moved on to the semi-finals at the SL i-League StarSeries Season 3 event after moving past CLG 2-0 (16-11 on Cache and 16-13 on Inferno).

The final series of the day kicked off on Cache, CLG's map pick, and the North American side got off to a flying start, winning the first six rounds as Astralis struggled to break through the defence.

After calling a tactical pause, Astralis' offence finally came to life, with the Danes winning their first round thanks to a fast A execution. That was the start of a great run from Astralis, who won five rounds in a row to keep the score to a minimum, but CLG kept their cool and took three of the final four rounds to secure a 9-6 lead.

Now playing on the CT side, Astralis came into the second half with fire in their bellies, winning seven rounds straight to overturn the deficit and take a solid lead. A last-gasp effort from CLG saw them win two rounds in a row, cutting the deficit to 11-13, but Astralis regained control of the game and won three straight to close out the map, 16-11.

Astralis took the lead after a keenly-contested Cache game

Next up was Inferno, which began with CLG taking the pistol round on the Terrorist side with double kills from Ricardo "Rickeh" Mulholland and Kenneth "koosta" Suen. After losing both eco rounds, Astralis replied in the first gun round, courtesy of a quad kill from Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth in sandbags.

What followed was a highly-contested period in which teams took turns to string rounds together, with the half ending in a surprisingly close 8-7 scoreline in favor of CLG.

CLG further added to their lead by winning the pistol round as CT, neutralising Astralis' B execution thanks to two key kills from Ethan "Ethan" Arnold. The North Americans followed that up with two more rounds to bring the scoreline to an 11-7 advantage, but then Astralis hit back in the first gun round, courtesy of a quad kill from Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander.

CLG's fairytale comes to an end

Even with Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye struggling to get kills, the Danish lineup went on a massive run, jumping out to a 14-12 lead. A triple kill from Stephen "reltuC" Cutler kept CLG in the game, but Nicolai "device" Reedtz replied with three frags of his own to put his team on match point, with the Danes locking down the map in the next round.

PotM: Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen takes the award for his tremendous consistency throughout the series. He had the most multikills (13) and boasted a 93.3 ADR across the two maps.

props to CLG they played really well against Astralis but, its amazing how they managed to make to playoffs without having to beat FaZe,VP,Astralis,North,G2,Fnatic,SK and Na'Vi they didn't beat any of the favorites and got to playoffs while a team like SK got VP,G2,Astralis and FaZe in a row, they really need to do something about swiss system there need to be some kind of seeding because when an underdog manage to make to playoffs without beating any of the favorites you can tell that something is wrong..

Well true kinda, But they lost vs astralis and hellraisers And won vs gambit, 5power and immortals I mean sure its not the hardest of teams, but its not like they faced all the asian teams. I'd dare say its still quite respectable for a team like clg..

it still a flawed system, the teams that they faced were obviously weaker than most of the teams that i mention above and if Immortals had won their match against CLG they would have made to playoffs by beating 2 asian teams and CLG, that's just goes to show how bad swiss system can be.

Honestly CLG were gifted with the easiest opponents the swiss format could offer to them. They don't belong to the playoffs and even less to play against Astralis.

Astralis played very sloppily on the first half of Inferno but when they got rolling CLG seemed to have no chance. credit to CLG on Cache though, they played really well on the CT side and had good executes, just that Astralis played a world-class CT side in that half. hopefully they show promise in the future.

agreed, they didn't take a single map out of the tier 1 teams in the event, there should not be a way to underdogs get to playoffs without having to win at least one map from the favorites.

I agree that there is no "merit" for your wins. A side that won their 1st and lost their last 3 by theory has played harder, better teams. Where as a side that lost 2 then won 3 has gone through playing easier sides.

yea, swiss system is flawed, it punishes you for winning your first matches, for instance what happened with G2 at Eleague major, they beat Fnatic in their first match and because of beating Fnatic they got matched up against VP,Astralis and North in a row, while Fnatic got matched up with Envyus,Mouz,North and Gambit, G2 got fucked up for winning their first match while Fnatic got an easy path to the quarter finals for losing theirs. same thing happened on starladder, Immortals and CLG got easier match ups because they lost their first matches while SK got matched up with VP,G2,Astralis and FaZe because they won theirs. they need to fix swiss system asap

WP to CLG, didn't expect them to put up such a fight, especially vs. Astralis in a BO3. Can definitely see some potential in the lineup.

I wish it was the case that CLG shows another strong showing at a LAN. Sadly, whenever an NA team does well at an international event, it's almost always a one time thing. The two great showings that Liquid put together at the back-to-back majors was because of S1mple, so that doesn't count. Consistency, teamwork, and NA don't go together. This is why the region won't ever win a major in CSGO, no matter how long the scene lasts.
