ESWC comments on penguin use

The ESWC has commented to HLTV.org on the issue of 12-year-old Bogdan "penguin" Marchenko being used by PinG.

Marchenko's appearance at the ESWC world finals clashes with the ESWC eligibility rule which states that every player "must be at least 16 years old on 30th June 2010" to participate in a tournament.

The ESWC justifies Marchenko's go-ahead to play with the fact that the French law says nothing on the matter, and has indicated that exceptions like this have been granted before.

"The ESWC has made exceptions in the past for certain WarCraft 3 and Quake players, such as av3k, and since the law does not force us to set an age limit, like in Germany, where there is a limit, we have decided to let him play and there will be no further actions," ESWC head referee Camille Versteeg told HLTV.org.

PinG are currently playing against Fair Frag for survival in the competition after losing their opening match 21-9 to Evil Geniuses.

As far as I have heard, Polish TrackMania (or NFS?) player wasn't allowed to participate at the Grand Finals because he was only 15 y.o. Can anyone confirm it and I wonder how can ESWC comment on that matter? At the moment I see double standards which put a shadow on the ESWC commitee, given the fact that penguin a son of oligarch. A scandal or what?

That player was Nothing and it's true that he couldn't go to Paris because of the age limit... He's 15 now and won the polish ESWC finals. Great harm for him i think, coz he plays really great in such a young age. Instead of him to Paris went Mikus (US), who was 2nd at the polish finals...

They didn't make exception for av3k. I pretty sure ESWC didn't allow him to play since he was 16.

if they can let a 12 year old play as a stand-in for PiNG then they should also let niko play for h2k instead of pop. why have stupid rulez anyway.

The niko case is absolutely no stupid rule, it's actually quite common that you have to have a majority of the players that you qualified with, left in the team you play the finals with. Otherwise you'll see less good teams qualify with really good players without the intention of using them in the finals. Ofc it doesn't happen too often at this level, but at lower levels it does.

since the law does not force us to set an age limit wierd, counter strike requires person to be atleast 16 to play it, so thats basicly breaking laws?

If parents are ok, it isn't breaking law. I think it depends on kids. With a good education there is no problem. It's just a game and most 12 years old kids are intelligent enough to understand it. My little brother was playing unreal tournament when he was 8 years old and he did not become a psychopat, not even a geek.

I don't mean like to become psychopat or geek, just for me its wierd, that he rather play computer games than going out or attending in some practise. I know also some young gamers who are ok guys and then its who is not.
