EG advance after close FG encounter

Evil Geniuses pulled out on top after a very interesting match against Full Gaming, turning the table after being down 0-1, to winning 2-1 after overtime on the third and final map.

The upper-bracket semi-finals at ESEA Invite S9 Playoff have now finished, seeing UMX.us and Evil Geniuses clash in the upper-bracket final. UMX.us won their semi-final versus Backfire, going all the way to the third map, where overtime was needed to settle the winner. UMX.us pulled the longest straw, winning 19-17 on de_inferno to win 2-1 overall.

The second semi-final saw EG take on Full Gaming. Starting on de_mirage, EG went down to a better organized FG team, who managed to win 16-8 and claim the lead. On second map de_train, EG was a better organized team and with ease won 16-7. Third map de_inferno would settle the encounter and overtime was needed to do so. Just like UMX.us, EG pulled out on top with a 19-17 score line, to win 2-1.

We caught EG's Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert on the phone for a quick post match comment:

"I think we over complicated ourselves on inferno and gave them a bit too much respect on a lot of rounds. As far as mirage goes, we just didn't prepare properly.  On top of jeff not knowing where to plant in A"

EG will face off against UMX.us in the upper-bracket final, a match scheduled to start at 03:30 . Teams currently fighting in the lower-bracket are Backfire, eMazing Flaking and Full Gaming.

The upper-bracket final will be the last match of today, Consolidation Final and Grand Final will be played Sunday. To view the scores and brackets, head over to our coverage section.

EG, FG, and Temporary would all do very well internationally. theres just no money to send them to tournaments

you are incorrect, eg has been in the iem group stage and failed terribly. although i love eg, it's not the money that's keeping them from coming over.

Remember that most top US players go to school and / or work full time so they don't have the time to prepare as thoroughly as fully salaried European teams. Also, the competition outside of a few teams in the US is nonexistent and mostly conducted online with horrible ping, so they can't get the practice they need to improve outside of the occasional international tournament (when their org funds them to go). For a long time there were no local tournaments anymore except the ESEA LAN finals (a few more are popping up - hopefully). Currently only EG and UMX have organizations that will fund trips overseas while everyone else has to pay out of their pocket. Even EG and UMX haven't been coughing up much lately. These things at least partly explain the lack of teamwork and preparation, but I also agree that ESEA is corrupting our talent instead of nurturing it. Whatever new CS players we get in the US are being taught to play a run-and-gun pug-like style of play where only stats and hero-like individual performances matter.

dont make excuses. no one cares if they have jobs or go to school, we are talking about how competitive they are in the intl scene. saying these things make absolutely no difference and makes you look dumb the US teams are further behind then the top intl teams then they ever have been in the history of Counter Strike. There should be absolutely 0 disagreement with this statement. if there is, the cause is probably mental retardation or a case of blind homerism edit: typos

its not really an excuse. if sk/navi can put in 8+ hours a day easily because they dont have to work/go to school they obviously have more time to practice than people who work 8 hours a day and have maybe 4-6 hours of playtime available to them. compound that with the fact that there arent many good teams in the NA to play against and of course they wont be as good as the euro teams. PS i think there is more dedication is esea-m than there is in invite nowadays

also, as an aside, the esea excuse is fucking hilarious. i remember when mibr won eswc, dreamhack, and got 3rd at one of the more competitive cpls playing against monkeys eating bananas in brazil (not to mention everyone probably had 160 ping constant). they also fostered the development of a player who would become the best in the world for a short period of time--fnx they made it work, so can the teams in the US. if anything, they could just follow the same pattern mibr did, it's not like it would be hard though it might cost some money. they just dont care enough/have the work ethic or determination to do so edit: dont give a fuck

I think a lot of North America teams are just content with being the best in North America. They go to what, one MAYBE two international events each year, if they are lucky. Its not worth putting in the NaVi hours for this. Since CPL died, a guaranteed 2 amazing international events a year, where all North American teams could attend and play the best in the world event died, there has been no motivation for these guys to throw away their lives to play cs. You get a few people people in North America doing this, but they are the younger kids who's only goal is to make it to ESEAinvite. The Invite teams probably play like 4-5 hours a day max i would say, and thats the super active teams. Its over, and its been over for a while. No need to shit on North American cs. Its never going to happen where we see a top5 US team ever again. Ever.
