UMX.us wins ECL 2011
ECL 2011, a four team invitational tourney held at a TV studio on October 20-25 in Beijing, China has ended with Ultimax Gaming USA taking the title and 20,000 RMB in prize money after defeating eFuture in the Grand Final. The event paid for all costs for the invited teams and handed out the prize money in cash.
The tournament featured an odd format where the four teams faced each other at first in a round robin to determine seedings for the following single elimination bracket. eFuture managed to win the group, directly qualifying themselves for the finals while TyLoo secured a spot in the top three with their second place. UMX.US placed third while UMX.TW placed fourth in the group, setting the two UMX teams up for a match.
UMX.US beat their Taiwanese counterparts 16-10 in the playoff opener and went on to face TyLoo to see who would go on to the grand final against eFuture. Despite their group stage loss on de_inferno, the Americans were stronger this time and came up on top with a 16-9 win on de_dust2, qualifying them for the grand final against eFuture.
The grand final started off on the map the two teams faced each other on in the group stage, de_dust2. Once again UMX.US improved their form in the playoffs as they turned an earlier 13-16 loss to a double over time win with a score of 22-20. Second map was de_inferno where the Chinese were stronger, winning the map with a score of 16-11.
The third and final map de_train turned out to be slightly controversial as the game was tied at 15-15 after regulation. During late second half eFuture used the flashbug in alley at least twice (as ECL wasn't using the fixed maps) but organizers had the teams finish the match, and eFuture came out on top with a 19-17 win. However, ECL decided to overturn the match due to multiple flashbugs from the Chinese.
