Tournament format for CPH Games

Copenhagen Games has announced the tournament structure for the 2012 event, which will feature a 20,000 prize purse, running on April 4-8 in the Danish capital.

The organizers of the Danish event have rolled out the tournament structure for the event, which will be slightly different than last year.

Copenhagen Games was previously open to any team who signed up and paid the entry fee. This year teams must apply for an invitation. A total of 24 teams will be invited to what they call the "invitational tournament". An additional eight teams will qualify for this tournament, via a qualifier tournament played Thursday at the event.

The invitational tournament will therefore consist of 32 teams, split in eight groups of four teams. This group stage will be played in a best-of-three format where first and second placed teams will advance to the playoffs, while third and fourth ranked teams will drop to what they've labeled as the "losers tournament".

Sixteen teams will advance to the playoffs, being played in a double-elimination bracket, using a best-of-three format in the upper-bracket and a best-of-one format in the lower bracket.

Teams wanting to apply for an invite can do so by going to the Copenhagen Games support page, where they have to select "Apply for tournament invitation" in "Subject" field and furthermore add a description about the team and past results. The first invites will be handed out on March 4 and the last on March 11.

To read more about the Copenhagen Games rules and regulations click here. The event will run April 4-8 and will feature a 20,000 prize purse.

Haha, please look how many days the event is lasting. Plus you give 550 dk (now, 650/750 after the 1 of march) So you might want to get something for the money :)

it's not randomness, but bo3 is the most fair structure to clearly judge who is best out of two teams imho

it's not totally random, of course, but once some maps are really one-sided, they can get luck and take out a way better team

low teams ? dude, it's 24 invited teams (so at least 14 of them will probably be very good teams), + 8 underdogs winning the "BYOC" tournament...

well the organisation doesn't support a CS team anymore, as they want to focus on coverage. if you check kaostv.nl you will see there is alot of casting, especially on COD/SC2/etc next big CS tourney with good teams attending Kaos and myselve will probably attend/cast from the studio, but up until now schedules have clashed (tourneys for other games) or the big tournaments for CS were midweek (me working), or during holidays/weekends where I had commitments. I know my Kaos friends are working on a new website btw! keep an eye out for it :P

the best possible system in my opinion! - lower level teams has own tournament - double elimination, yet BO3 in upper bracket - 24 invites: garanteed high level teams - 8 invites: everyone gets a chance to compete against the top teams JUST PERFECT. :D

Best of three in the groupstage is what we should be trying to get all tournaments to adopt. One organisation finally fixes this and you idiots are complaining? Jesus Hernandez Christ. Teams have different strengths and weaknesses on different maps. A b03 group stage means it's more likely that the best team will win the overall event and that 2nd to nth place will be more accurate. This is important because (among several other reasons) teams are organisations that depend on both the prize money and the exposure (repaying sponsors) to fund their operations. Putting even that aside, why would you complain about getting to see more matches? I'd gladly put up with some newb team getting slaughtered a second time if it means I get to see a best-of-three between Lions and Navi (for example).
