ESWC format released

The Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) organisers have announced the format and regulations for all tournaments that will be played at the 2012 event.

The ESWC finals will take place at the Paris Games Week from November 2-4, with a total of $20,000 up for grabs in the ten-team male CS:GO competition.

It has now been revealed that the tournament will kick off with a group stage with two groups of five teams and in which every match will use a best-of-one mode. The top two teams from each group will then progress to the semi-finals, played in a best-of-three mode.

Earlier in the week, it was announced that the ESWC had joined several other event organisers in creating a standard rule-book, to be used by all tournaments.

As expected, there is no mention of any forbidden weapons on the ESWC's regulations, which means that the Molotov grenades will be allowed and using them is entirely up to the teams.

Following the announcement of the three invited teams on Wednesday, nine of the 10 places in the CS:GO tournament have already been filled. The last spot will go to the winner of the French qualifier, which will be played between October 30 and November 1.

From what I've seen from the mix teams, the CSS French players performed better, but may just be down to practise. All I hope is that nip finally see some competition!!

I don't want to sound like the asshole that I am, but do you guys know how to read? It has now been revealed that the tournament will kick off with a group stage with two groups of five teams and in which every match will use a best-of-one mode. The top two teams from each group will then progress to the semi-finals, played in a best-of-three mode. EVERY GROUP STAGE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MOST 1.6 AND SOURCE TOURNAMENTS HAS BEEN BEST OF 1, THE PLAYOFFS ARE BO3.

there was literally not one person prior to your post that misunderstood the fact that it was bo1 in the group stage, which means everyone read the article just fine. the fact that this is the most common tournament format used means that you're just stating the obvious, for whatever reason. so given the fact that you're saying what everybody pretty much already knows, and you're acting like everybody has their head up their ass except you when this is common knowledge, despite your best efforts, you do sound like the asshole that you are, and you've also pointlessly abused the bold option for absolutely no reason. thank you for your garbage input, and your best attempt at insulting absolutely no one ;)

what's wrong with bo1 ??? 90% of 1.6 tournaments were with BO1 in groupstages (ESL, DreamHack, WCG...)

they should use the ESL system (as i believe they were first to use this system) with each group winners going straight to semi-finals, while 2nd and 3rd teams play eachother in quarter-finals.

Wouldve been better if first placed teams qualified for the semifinals and the 2nd and 3rd placed teams played for the other 2 spots.

Since the teams themselves told the community they don't want the molotovs to be used, why don't they put their heads together and just talk before the games that noone will use them? Respect?

selfish tournament friendly structures(in that they are quick and simple for the venue, and take up minimal time) like this are what makes cs so frustrating to watch and a game like starcraft 2 easy to watch, they get a huge number of matches per tournament, and they somehow manage to make it work in 3 days, many times at the same exact venues at the same event. Bring back double elimination brackets or at least let them play bo3 matches in the group play, you could just allow the winner to take the point, regardless if it is 2-1 or 2-0. At least let all the teams who have prepared so much for this event play more than 5 maps. Also, for playoffs, simply to make it interesting, allow 3 teams per group advance for a 6 team playoff. Seed 3 versus Seed 4 in opposing groups, or simply just take the 3rd seeded team. Mixing it up for more play and more excitement can only bring more viewers. Even in the Dota 2 International, they had group play go over 2 days, and all the teams played each other twice, with each team playing a total of 16 games in group stage. Do something different!

You are totaly right about the group matches. All of the participating teams are practising and they deserve more chances to show their potential, and their faith to be decided by a 2-3 maps total. As you said about The Internationals but the prize purse here is 20k in total, but as in any tournament some matches are just a formality for the superstar teams.

To everyone concerned about Molotovs being allowed: from what I've seen, most teams in EPS and the ESWC qualifiers make gentlemen's agreements not to use Molotovs prior to the start of the match. I'd imagine it'll be the same case here.
