Steam to allow game sharing?
19-6-2013 12:06
Valve has added some lines of code to Steam that suggest that game sharing may be possible in the future.
NeoGAF poster Grief.exe discovered that in the last Steam update, Valve has added a 'Shared game library', which suggests that at some point you will be able to lend your friends the games that you own on Steam.
Right now, every game that you purchase is tied to your account, and you cannot sell or lend them to other Steam users. But the following three lines of code indicate that you will be able to share games with your friends:
- "SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicense_Title" "Shared game library"
- "SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_OwnerText" "Just so you know, your games are currently in use by %borrower%. Playing now will send %borrower% a notice that it's time to quit."
- "SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_BorrowerText" "This shared game is currently unavailable. Please try again later or buy this game for your own library."
It is still unclear how Valve plans to implement game sharing and if this change will ever see the light of day, as publishers are not too keen on letting games be shared for free.
