aslak retires from Counter-Strike

Former WinFakt CS 1.6 and for a brief period Curse.EU CS:GO member Timi "aslak" Verkkoperä has decided to hang up his mouse for good.

Verkkoperä broke through as an upcoming star in the summer of 2011 after he joined paistit, which later on became WinFakt after a 5-6th place finish at e-Stars where his side beat project_kr and fnatic.

WinFakt finished the year with top three finishes at IEM VI Global Challenge Guangzhou, SEC 2011 and IEM VI Global Challenge New York, where they lost versus SK Gaming in the grand final.

The AWPer of the team was able to lead the Finns to a top three finish at Copenhagen Games 2012 as well, racking up a K-D difference of +97, a KPR of 0.89 and an impressive rating of 1.34.

The team died soon after and Verkkoperä started his military service, while also attending ASUS Final Battle of the Year with paistit, finishing second behind KerchNET.

He made a return to Counter-Strike in early 2013 as he joined Curse and instantly found success within Finland together with old teammate Aleksi "allu" Jalli by winning LanTrek 2013 in his Global Offensive debut.

Verkkoperä also represented ENCE eSports, placing 5-6th at ESPC #2, and most recently solemn, with whom he was able to top Solid Gaming 2 in Helsinki. Last night he lost against 4w in what turned out to be his final CS:GO match.

"I've decided to retire. In the end it was an easy decision because I realized I don't really have any reason to play CS:GO competitively anymore", Verkkoperä told HLTV.org.

"I want to apologize to my teammates for doing this again. I also want to thank everyone who ever supported me, (fans, family, friends, teammates, sponsors) it was an epic ride especially in 2011 October with WinFakt!

"Everything comes to an end at some point and let this be mine :p Sure I'll play some gathers and all from time to time but that's only when I really want to play, because CS will always be an awesome part of my life. Hopefully someday allu and co. will raise Finland to the top again!

It is so far unknown what solemn decides to do following Verkkoperä's departure and last night's Mad Catz qualifier loss, as the team tagging under Invaders are yet to publish a statement.

Yeah, an easy decision to understand. CS:GO is just... well, something that nobody cares about, and as a game, something that just isn't the kind of thing you want to play seriously. Too bad though, really enjoyed his play in 1.6

in 2011 he was at the same level as markeloff, friis, delpan ect... Its sad the best snipers from 1.6 cant adapt well and do the same stuff in GO.

Yea you cant do that in GO, it should take longer to get into the zoom so it feels more reasonable. And they should buff the scout for quick scoping.

I always admired all finnish players. Aslak was a monster with the big green. Can't really remember other finnish as skilled as him with it. coloN/aslak/Friis were so talented in the end of 1.6. I REALLY wanted to see who was the best 'fresh' awp in the game. Only if 1.6 lived another two years... so sad. Anyway, goodluck in real life!

Sure, the 1.6 worldclass scene could have proceed for another year or two perhaps. Counting players in fnatic and NaVi, G5 and 1 strong swedish lineup as the only real consistent contenders for triumphs. These guys are not old in real life so to speak but eSports-wise they were/are in thier later stage of a career. What did we have 1 step below?..like 1 finnish Aslak&CO, 1 RUS/UA Dosia&CO, 1 danish colon&CO and then it was pretty much nothing... exept 1 yankee-lineup n0thing&CO and 1 or 2 asian ones showing up and doing some dmg one or twice every year at Majors/e-Stars/IEM-stop reaching a quarter or a semifinal in a lifetime or whatever. My prediction is that in the end/very near future 1.6 would have choked itself to death, basicly it didnt thrive enough among youths=not enough with new worldclass talents and as 1.6 still breathed some healthier air in 2011 (competitivly) - tournaments were still dropping with a quite high amount comparing previous year/s. CS: GO might not go that huge, it might be true, but at least it merged the two topscenes of Counter-Strike with a new and more "fresh" approach, something NEW happened giving it a shot to stop the bleeding, it might still be shit or average to some at this point but thats another story for now. We will have to w8 and see, and for sure the upcomming update/s will be highly deciding wich direction this game is heading. For sure, competivly the optimal thing would be a CS 1.7 in the future. Wich includes a bit more appealing graphics than 1.6 and basicly the very same gameplay as 1.6 but implemented with some of the very best oldnew features from 1.5, 1.3 etc (like those thoorin and lurppis brought up in the podcast for example), and maybe some new/newer ones aswell, but ofc only if they would make competitive sense bringing something useful and intresting to the game in the end. But would it be enough to match up with DOTA, Blizzard's powerhouses...? dount it, FPS Days are not in its prime, far far from it, how to counter it? is it really CS :GO fault? ^^ ..hmm. /theEnd
