CS:GO update to help boost prizes?

According to Twitter, CS:GO's next update will allow community members to help build larger prize pools at competitive tournaments.

Less than a day after The International 3 has concluded in Bellevue, the csgo_dev account has published a tweet suggesting players can soon contribute to prize pools.

For the International Dota 2 tournaments Valve was selling an item called Compendium, of whose profits half were directly put into the prize pool of the multi-million dollar event.

It remains to be seen what the details will be for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but it seems clear this week's update will give the community more than just the long awaited silencer.

What do you think this week's update will bring? Will it help event organizers finally host a true major event in CS:GO? Let us know in the comments below.

They expect people to pay money and support the game which they have given no attention to. I guess I'm just fussy.

LOL this is such a typical idiotic comment; which by the way always comes out of Counter-Strike: Source players. Like I have so much to say but I genuinely can't be bothered typing it all out because users like you are just echos of richard_lewis. but let's have a look what CSGO would be if people embraced these obviously great changes to CS:GO. - molotovs would still just dominate the game, can you remember them? went unchanged for ages until Valve eventually succumbed to the community. - smoke grenades would never have got changed just utterly the worst things to happen to any counter strike and only now they have begun to tweak them. - mag7 would still be actually the best weapon in the game. - aimpunch still stronger presence in the game than currently. - ADADAD would be even more prevalent. - rifle recoil would still be fucked as shit. these are just some of the changes (probably even more I can't remember) that would of obviously never happened if it wasn't because of the community EVERY 'ESPORT' relies on community feedback. Valve don't listen to jackshit from CS. LoL, DoTA and SC all change the game according to pros the community, do you not think if any of the aforementioned game titles had some ridiculous changes to the effect the molotovs had on the game the general community wouldn't be like "WTF are u idiots doing" then the devs would change accordingly. With CS we have a game breaking change and then a prolonged "WTF are you doing" period because the devs literally do not do anything, and they don't even communicate there thoughts behind the change. They think counter strike should appease the devs and not the community. like I don't understand you want Valve to just do whatever they want and for the community to act hunky dory about it. the only bit of listening they've ever tried to do when in the development stage they had SOURCE 'pros' flown out to discuss changes that could be made ('pros' from a tiny esport game when they could of flown out 1.6 professionals to comment on the game, literally to this day nobody understands why they chose source over 1.6).

LOL. you just listed a bunch of stuff valve did listening to the community and your argument is that its a "game which they have given no attention to". I think the community should give as much feedback as they can, but there is a way to do it. CS community is the worst at it.

that's a year of changes. how long did the community have to ask for them? most of these haven't even properly/correctly changed. there's still ADADAD, there's still aimpunch and the smoke grenades are still ridiculous. CS community do it worst? are we ignoring the: -'pro' forum that gets regularly posted on - top players having directly sent videos and written up changes that could be made to valve. - well written up blogs by the community. - news posts. no different from SC or dota. csgo devs just choose to ignore it, or when they do finally address an issue after months of literally everyone and their mums asking for it they do a half assed job of changing/fixing it.

I am a software developer myself and I am amazed at how fast/often these guys are able to roll out changes. Trust me a weekly release cycle is no child's play for a product this size. Also, it is easy for you to just look at a few opinions that match your own and say that is what the whole community wants. For example, i like the old smoke grenades and dont like the new change to them. A lot of these things are subjective and when you are a product manager, you hear a million different opinions from thousands of different people, figuring out which changes really matter, and selecting the ones that will actually improve the game is not an easy task. After that, there is a process to follow with approvals/scoping/designing/coding/testing/releasing. All these are time consuming tasks. They should be given a LOT more credit that they have been given. No other company can support a $15 game to a level that valve have done for a whole year. I think we should be thankful as a community.

Apart from you listed a bunch of shit that only bitches with aids who touch little kids complained about. ADADA spam complaints come from noobs who don't want their opponents moving around because aiming is too hard. Mag7 was NEVER the best gun in the game (You know unlike the AK47 being the only weapon of any worth through the last 500000 years of 1.6). And the recoil update actually lowered the skill cap, because of noobs who couldn't do the 'Point crosshair at feet' of CSS and 1.6 (We were JUST starting to see pros get good at controlling the harder spray). And no, every esport doesn't rely on community feedback. Generally if you're taking community feedback for a esport game, then your game is going to be shit and have aids. Because 99.99999999% of the community will suck ass at the same, and the other 0.000000001 will be so biased towards keeping things the way they are you can't really listen to them. If other esports listened to community feedback, then we'd have seen SC2 basically die as the balance changes would have been broken. Most of the good changes to the game haven't come from community feedback, but from statistical analysis. And while it occasionally messes up, it's far better than the I room temperature IQ that most of the CS community has. And even if feedback from the community was worth anything, the moronic ramblings of a sexually frustrated community going through flashbacks to that time they went to uncle touchies super secret funtime basement, is NOT the way that you do feedback. 99% of feedback from the community is simply 'Valve sucks because they haven't copied 1.6 1:1' And honestly I'm not surprised they flew in source players, rather than 1.6, as generally source players are less likely to go 'I hate it because it isn't 100% copy of 1.6 asd;.fkjadslfjha'. And at the end of the day valve were looking to create a new game (You know, that's what creative people do...)

1/10 You must be a joy to play vs. in matchmaking, really classy. Hope you read your post in 10 yrs. Aside from that the game is the worst shape ever and that coming from a fan who wants to enjoy cs. The memory leaks make it feel like your playing on wireless. They won't fix the m4 recoil because they don't want whole teams getting sprayed down and the deagle doesn't reg from 10 ft away dead aimed and should just be removed. They've gone to extremes with guns like the deagle because there stubborn and don't understand that ct is defensive and in every modern shooter defending is easier so they tip the scales in the favor of the terrorists. That's because they look at why and when people are dropping from matches. More people will leave matches while losing on T side because its more frustrating. Their basically babying people who just want a game that makes sense. Sorry for having aids.

Players got quite some stuff for buying a compendium ... as long as we don't know what Valve actually plans, we don't know what they gonna offer for buying such a thing. And btw: Valve got roughly 11.5 mio through selling compendiums, which means: about 1.150.000 players out of ROUGHLY ( at that time...) 5.3 mio players actually bought one.

"We don't know what they gonna offer for buying such a thing" ...what? For every $10 compendium Valve only contributed $2 to the prize pool. If the prize pool was $2.800.000 they made $14.000.000. Say they even used $1.000.000 or even $4.000.000 for producing The International 3 event. They still made over $10.000.000, all off the concept of selling virtual items for an event. That's right. Over Ten. Million. Dollars.

Get your facts right. For every $10, Valve contributed $2.50 to the prize pool in addition the $1.6 million pledged out of their pockets. Meaning if the prize pool is $2.8 million, $1.2 million came from the compendium which translate to around 480k compendiums bought. So they made only $3.6 million which isn't a lot considering the scale of the international 3 and the fact that players and casters accommodation/food/air ticket are all included for.

I messed up big time, forgot about the $1.6M beforehand. Doesn't change the fact the same model (Dota) would not work for CS:GO because of the lack of players and most importantly, Valve's ignorance of much-complained about fixes/changes to the Glock, Deagle, movement, and 128-tick servers. Valve is putting some half-assed attention to CS:GO by cloning their Dota system into it, and all it's going to do is ruin the game further with its colourful skins, crates, and messed up silencer weapons.

Props to you for admitting it. I do agree that the model of cosmetic items will not work as it significantly alters the gameplay. And if they tone down the cosmetic part of the item it is defeating the purpose in the first place. It will be a better idea if they put in spray paints customization or specialized taunt as these do not alter gameplay much, yet it appeals to the casual players. If the community contribution is successful, we can hope to see a more prestigious tournament for CS:GO. Much like the TI3 albeit on a smaller scale. 128-tick servers will also be likely to be implemented then as cost was the reason cited for using 64-tick servers instead.

The good old spray paint idea is good. Another possibility is a small team logo on the rifles or an area where it would not be obviously visible. The problem with a community-run tournament is that one, what would the equivalent CS:GO compendium have? Would enough people really be willing to pay a huge sum for that? And there would have to be more effort on Valve's part in broadcasting and producing the event, much like TI3. If they always leave it up to a 3rd party nothing's going to change except for the prize pool - no additional players or viewers.

Or a name tag item where people can put their initials on armor or uniform where applicable. Some people are sucker for such stuff. General rule for the cosmetic items are that, it should only be visible at close or close - mid distance. If you can spot someone using a cosmetic item at far range, it's too much. Depending on the success of this implementation, I am hoping Valve will indeed produce CS:GO very own international. Scale varying with the numbers of course. The question with regards to equivalent of CS:GO compendium is a good one. They can have some random rare coveted items drop when you do a compendium MM.(a special MM for that period of time) Having a CS:GO TV similar to DotaTV. As of now, streams are good but they don't allow you to spec freely. Direct connection to server might lag at times and the first person spectate is just inaccurate. Your fav team engraved knife. Or even pepper spray to replace the taser? :D To be honest it can be anything. But the main important thing is to build up a sizable and supportive community in order to support the scene. Similar to sports, you need casual players to watch/support competitive players. If our own esports scene doesn't even support our game, why will the sponsors do so?

Agreed. The whole compendium idea is really just too good... ...for Valve. They make so much damn money while using 20% of the compendium cost for the prizepool. And considering CS:GO has such a small player base compared to DOTA, this kind of idea would just fail. volvo is aborting their fail child called CS:GO and people still think they're supporting it...god knows why they think that.

Just heard some inside stuff.. Game is in general free, matchmaking will be DLC... When playing matchmaking there is no money system, the money is from DLC PACKS. If you dont purchase DLC ingame money, you will spawn with pistol and have to pickup weapon.. 3$ = $100.000 ingame or around 50 awps ;)

To be honest, ive played 1.6 since 2002, loved it, started playing csgo and i liked it, only reason i dont play 1.6 anymore is cuz lans are over here for 1.6. now im trying to get csgo lans over, cant seem to find how to make a lan dedicated server for csgo. every time they update go i get exited and i usually dont get that disapointed. i guess a few teaks to movement and we are ready to get this shittt goingggg. only thing i really want from valve is freaking servers in south america, at least 1 or 2 per country is not that much.

Meh, too lazy to make a proper anti cheat ? Ask the users. Too skinflint to make a tourney ? Ask the users. What's next ? Pay for GOTV ? Pay for update ?

F2P, Pay for Matchmaking, Hat store, etc. Asking the users to release updates for the game then removing all necessary fixes in the player-update, only keeping the HATS.

Well, it's very nice to let the community boost prize purse, but I hope Valve isn't putting all the efforts on players, because they have a responsability for these prize purses as well !

there are a lot of things I would like to be 'fixed' in this game: 1. A better deagle 2. nerf glock or boost p2000 3. MM servers in south america, playing with +160 ping isn't fun. 4. _se versions in MM 5. 128 tick rates in MM 6. nerf the mighty p90 7. ADADADADADAD

They do care man ARMA3 is spectacular! They also have a soft spot for terrorists hence the winning percentages lurrpis demonstrated a few weeks ago. No offense/defense based shooter should have numbers where the offensive team is at the advantage on every map.

I'm wondering why there are a lot more less players in CSGO now. Although I think the game is perfectly challenging according to multi-dimension skills such as nade throwing and spraying. Guns are strong if they are used correctly.

Meaning that the aim of a player is much more important than the trickery stealth aspect of the game. If you watched players like SpawN back in the day you could see he was a top aimer but so many kills and multi-kill rounds were based off him being where the other team wasn't prepared for. Positioning is far less important than aim in the current form, and for thinking players its just quite sad.

I guess this new way is: buy eSports-Key to open eSports-Chest for Skins. This way Valve can say: we keep a $, cuz u get skins for your money. Will be interesting how much money Valve will keep.

Nice and interesting. I think it will be new section in csgo workshop and about "skins". People will make skins, sell it and half money will go for the prize pools, similar to Operation Payback thing. Right now we have only maps in there: steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse?appid.. I hope they will release something more, like movement, aimpunch and sound tweaks.

Great move? They sell eSports-Keys, get money for it and give a % to tournaments. They've simply found a way to get money for themselves. I simply hope the % they keep will be low.

well, like you said we don't know details nor how much they will keep. plus, i doubt they'll keep it for no reason. you'll probably get some sort of extra info that "standard" tournament viewers won't have access to. either way they won't do it for free, that's for sure. if the profit is also used to pay the dev team salaries then I'm glad to pay. if I don't find the % reasonable then I won't contribute, but that's a personal choice, no one is forced to buy anything. the principle itself is great imo. whether the implementation of the principle is also great is another story. let's wait and see.
