NiP on fnatic overtime

Ninjas in Pyjamas manager Niklas "Fiskoo" Fischier has written a blog about the team's protest in the DreamHack Bucharest match against fnatic.

A problem with the server configuration made the two teams play out a maxround 5 overtime, when the rules stated that each half had three rounds, with fnatic eventually running out 21-16 winners.

After the match, NiP filed a protest, and the admins decided that the second half of overtime should be replayed, with the score set at 2-1 in favour of fnatic.

Andreas "MODDII" Fridh's side ended up winning the match again, and then fnatic's players shouted insults towards NiP's members, an incident that was caught on camera by HLTV.org.

Fiskoo and cArn discussing the issue

After fnatic's Chief Gaming Officer (CGO) Patrik ”cArn” Sättermon issued a statement to clarify what happened, it was now NiP's turn to address the issue. Below you can find Niklas "Fiskoo" Fischier's statement, taken from the team's website.

After our match against fnatic during DH Bucharest we all decided not to further discuss what happened outside the organisation and just let everything go. Our relationship with the fnatic organisation and our fans seemed to be better off without witnessing a debate on who is to blame in situations like this. But after watching several videos featuring the fnatic players not telling the whole story we are compelled to tell our side of the story.

We don’t like the fact that parts of the community and our fans in particular may be under the impression that NiP took a cheap-shot against fnatic. This is something we have never done, never will because we don’t have to. We reacted to a situation where a game was played with wrong settings and it had an impact on the match in question. The fnatic players insist on saying that they felt they were robbed of their victory and that the NiP players tried to stab them in the back. This is the reason we finally decided to tell you what really happened.

The overtime:

The rules say that all overtimes was to be played in the MR3 format. So after the first half of the OT (3 rounds) the NiP players said GH, but to our surprise the fnatic players stated that it was MR5 which was supported by the fact that the OT-script on the server did not switch sides. Confusion and discussion within the team followed and it seemed unlikely that it would be a valid outcome due to the fact that even one of the players of the fnatic team also stated that it was impossible. But the rules also say that teams can’t pause for rule violations so we continued playing.

The OT eco:

The confusion regarding the OT rules caused the NiP players to  miss buy time and be stuck with only pistols  in the 4:th round. Xizt had bought an AWP and an AK in what we thought was the final round because he had good spawn. He then ran back to spawn to switch to the AK he bought. This caused Xizt to have almost no money in the 4:th round. None of the fnatic players seemed to react to the fact that their opponents had to play with pistols in the middle of an overtime.

The momentum loss:

After being forced to a pistol round caused by the confusion,  we lost all of what was left of our momentum. This in turn put us in a situation where fnatic was up 4-1 after the first half. Being in a situation being down three rounds due to an eco and the following frustration is not an easy situation to handle and just keep playing.

All of this because of faulty settings on the server. No doubt we would protest. And to be clear here; we did not protest against fnatic. We protested that the wrong settings put us in a situation which would never have happened if the settings were right. No pistol round, no frustration and no momentum loss.

fnatic players have stated that they left the tournament area certain they were winners even though i instantly approached them after the game while they were still there and said i would protest against the situation and that i would take it up with Carn. So i informed both players and management of fnatic before i even talked to an admin. Carn, me and the admin discussed the situation and we ALL agreed that the OT indeed should be played MR3 and that the final half should be replayed. First half would still be 2-1 in fnatics favor. That way we cut out the eco round, the momentum loss and all other factors that should not be there due to the faulty settings.

Some time after  the decision Carn came back and said his players refused to accept his/my and the admins decision and that they too wanted to protest. They insisted they had won fair and square. Admins deliberated and then delivered the final decision that the last half of the OT would indeed be replayed.

What happened is that fnatic beat us in the second half of the OT and got a well deserved win. We would like to thank Carn and Devilwalk for their professionalism. They both approached us after the game and wanted to apologize for the fnatic teams reactions after the game was over and that the others refused to shake hands after the match. Fnatic has made an official apology to both NiP and the community so the matter is closed. NiP and fnatic maintain their good relationship.

If you wanted to protest, why you didn't say "we don't want to play more" after 3rd round in 1st OT? No, you played on, lost, then you protest? I would piss in your face if i was one of fnatic players. I wouldn't shake hands, neither. Stfu retard and if you feel damaged, then dont play 2nd OT, moron.

This is one hell of an awful explaination. Nip takes no responsibility while putting it all on fnatic. If they knew something was up when the server didn't swap them after the 3d round, they should've paused the game and gone to ask the admins on the spot. Not wait until after the game... Carn's excuse > fiskoo's by far.

Ah, I missed that.. I still think it's a really bad statement overall. Any sort of responsibility they could've taken they just push away. Sure fnatic do appear as the bad guys in this situation but the least nip could do is put themselves in fnatic's shoes and acknowledge that the emotions are going high after feeling robbed like that, instead of just thanking fnatic for their excuse.

LOL, worst excuse ever.. My thoughts after reading this is that the only reason fnatics two rounds as T in the second half of the mr5 OT was not counted (when the three first rounds of the first half was), is because NiP lost momentum after the 4-1 disadvantage going into the second half. Cause that's what I get by reading this. But NiP completely ignores the feelings fnatic possible went through forced to replay the OT which they thought they had won fair & square, since, after all a OT was played (not according to the mr3 as the rules, but it was played) the only difference is NiP was mistaking it was a mr5 and fnatic didn't, because they actually took notice of the server settings being loaded.. Still think just letting the victory go to fnatic would've been the most fair way, instead of this shit, where fnatic ended up in a disadvantage (still managed to win though, which is kewl).

+1 loss of momentum is merely psychological and NiP had a psychological advantage out of it in the end because of the overtime being replayed. So in the end it was unfair to fnatic.

If anything it gave fnatic a psychological edge since they wanted to make a statement by beating NiP again and they did so good on em, high level players usually play better with their backs against the wall otherwise they don't stay high level for long.

your argument doesn't hold up, NiP have good evidence to prove that they were confused about the mr5 rules and made a huge mistake due to it. The fault here is not with nip or fnatic its with the admins for not correcting the overtime rules as soon as it had been recognised. Giving fnatic 2-1 and setting it back to mr3 was an alright decision given the circumstances (I would have debated resetting the scores and playing over) From an admin and tournament management perspective, having let it played out in mr5 rules would have allowed for a potentially damaging precedent for the later stages of the event and future events.

I don't think you're getting my point here, fnatic would had won 4-1 or 6-1 no matter it had been a mr3 or 5. So honestly, I don't understand why the three first rounds of the first half was counted but not the two first of the second half. Judging from this lame excuse, the two first rounds of the second half was not counted because NiP suffered a momentum loss since they, as you said, fucked up in the first half with the full buy. But the thing is, fnatic had to replay the OT which they thought they had won, and you can clearly say they were not happy about this, judging from the video (so they had huge momentum loss forced to go into another OT). So in my opinion, momentum and feelings during the game and after should have been ignored, since it would only benefit one team, as it now did.

Not make any sense at all. Logic here is: Game should be replayed when incorrect setting happens: either second half or whole OT should be replayed. I myself think the admin decision is correct and fair enough for both team. Moreover, the outcome of the OT proved that it didn't benefit NiP at all, they still lost.

I'm sorry, but it's your post which is missing logic.. A game is almost NEVER replayed after the result (when the teams have shaken hands and one team is the winner). So, if NiP wouldn't had protested this game would hardly been replayed.. But you don't get my point, I'm mainly talking about how the three first rounds of the first half (mr5) was counted and not the three first of the second half. Looking at fiskoo's post you can easily see that's all because of momentum. And I simply said that this situation couldn't be fairly handled by judging by each teams momentum (NiP losing so much in the first half and fnatic forced to replay the OT). That's why I think the fairest way would've been to just let the first mr5 go, since an OT was actually played.

This must be the worst excuse for a drama i've ever seen. So, Fnatic won the overtime 4-1, the match restarted with 2-1, Fnatic won again... why in the NAME OF FUCK are we talking about this?! Jesus Christ, i ALMOST prefer the 1.6 vs CSGO threads.

This drama was way overblown from the beginning. I'd agree that if the game had meant anything or that if fnatic had lost the rematch it would be worth the whole back and forth exchange with front page news and stuff.

My god Fiskoo is beyond without a clue here :/ Why the long story about the eco round?! It was completely out of the picture converting the result to MR3. Round 4 and 5 of the first overtime does not count - AT ALL. Protesting (read: whining :/) despite this fact is in fact exactly a CHEAP-SHOT. The "because we don’t have to" comment is just beyond stupid at this point. Momentum loss, sure, but that part affected the rounds out of the picture. There's no excuse for this behaviour. Fiskoo went for the low blow, unfair chance of winning an otherwise lost match - and how the admins can't take fairplay and sportsmanship into consideration when making decisions like this is beyond me and on top of that just really, really sad :/

Are you retarded? People reacted that nip tried to make the fairly lost rounds (4th and 5th) invalid.I also thought so. But this is NOT the case.Thoose rounds are obviously non-valid,according to rules and also according to this side of the story. Everything checks out.Gl NiP

You obviously haven't understood the situation. Or otherwise you're just not able to express and get your point across in an understandable manner. I certainly can't decipher what you're trying to say here. So please re-read my comment and then explain yourself in a little more detail. - And refrain from the 'retard' comments, thank you.

Momentum means for the whole OT, they lost 2 unnecessary rounds, they were confused, frustrated so they lost the 3 next rounds, too. That excuse is reasonable, y u so excited about it ? Big organization, like SK, mTw,.. had many cheap protest before but this one, I agree with NiP

The '2 next rounds' you mean, I take it? They only ever played 2 rounds in the second OT, from 4-1 to 6-1. The last two rounds in the first OT half were cancelled out, rightly so by converting the result to MR3. But NiP surely could've protested during the half-time of the two overtimes. Why didn't they do that? It wouldn't have required a pause. Surely there's an admin nearby or overlooking the server who can be informed and has time to react during a half-time. But they opted to just sit down and play the second half instead, finishing the game, seemingly only to go for the protest if they should lose. If the 'momentum' meant so much, why would they just choose to sit down again and keep playing? It doesn't hold up. Fair enough that they went for it, but at least have the guts to admit it when you've gone for a cheap-shot - or at the very, very least don't state the complete opposite, that's just disrespectful to everyone :/

nip thought it was mr3,they acted like mr3,resulted in a eco in 4th round, which fucked up the rest of the OT for nip.Rules said mr3,so they picked up from 2-1,not counting the eco and the other round.

You obviously don't get it. Not counting both the 4th and 5th round of the first overtime AND the first two rounds of the second overtime. Converting the MR5 result to MR3 it's perfectly correct not counting round 4 and 5. But just as well as the first 3 rounds stand, so does the first 2 of the 2nd half. Making it 4-1 total in an MR3, instead of 6-1 in the MR5. Protesting about that is nothing but an unfair cheap-shot. Stating afterwards that "we don't have to" (ie. use cheap-shots) is just stating the complete opposite of what was done and seems nothing but silly in light of the actual actions. And that's a sad fact :/

The Organizations can't control their player behavior, things like this happen in every sports, what matters is that both Organizations acted professionally in the end and the whole drama is finished.

That fact doesn't really make a difference to the actual situation though. Sure, they're not completely honest, and the fnatic players behaviour is still inexcusable, but other than that it doesn't change the foundation of the protest and the fact that it was not a correct decision made in the given situation, especially not in the light of fairplay and good sportsmanship :/ Fiskoo doesn't bring anything else to the table other than the imprudent remark about them not having to resort to cheap-shots, when this was nothing but a low-blow and anything but with fairplay in mind :/

nip had right to protest.i rly dont know what are you talking about.it should be mr3 but it wasnt.as simple as that.nip were confused but they just hadnt chance to pause the game and discuss that situation bcs it was against the rules so basically they was forced to play whole overtime(mr5)... where is "bad" behaviour from them? i dont see any bad sportmanship here or whatsoever.they had right to prostest, they said it to fnatic right after the match.fiskoo, carn and admin agreed that they will play second half overtime again and then fnatics players were acting like little kids

If you can't see it by now I'm not sure I'll be able to explain it to you, but I'll give it a try anyway. Aye, it was the wrong format, and had the result not been convertible from '6-1 MR5' to '4-1 MR3', then a total replay of the overtime had been in its place. But if you accept the result of the first three rounds of the first overtime as an MR3 result, then you should arguably do the same for the first three (or in this case two) rounds of the second overtime. Fiskoo knew before making the protest that even as an MR3 result fnatic would still have won the match fair and square. Even though, he still chose to protest, seemingly only going for a complete re-play or somehow convince the admins to not accept just some of the won fnatic rounds. That's not being fair. That's going for a cheap-shot. Yes, it happens all the time, and always will do in "sport" and competitions, and "all the others are doing it..." - but that certainly doesn't make it less unfair or good sportsmanship in any form or shape. And that's a sad fact :/ Aye, they had "right" to try getting a protest to change the outcome. Everyone always has a right to protest. But it wasn't the sportsmanlike thing to do here. Fiskoo knows that, so throwing remarks around like the "because we don’t have to" one about going for a cheap-shot is just beyond disrespectful in this regard :/

No you didn't, but you replied to my first comment where I said it was not correct, hence it seemed like it was there you were going with your argument-empty post. Aye, carn agreed, but the players surely have a say as well, which they stated by not accepting it or re-protesting. And carn obviously doesn't agree with the decision now, so he must have changed his mind at some point during the process ("..maintain our stance that the ruling of the Dreamhack officials was not appropriate or correct and below the professional expectations we have of tournament organisations of such standards.") NiP had the right, yes, and chose to use that right despite it not being in the interests of fairplay. You can re-read the arguments above and bring some of your own to the table if you want to continue this.

Rooting for NiP became tough because its like staying with a frontrunner and I (and many others) are not fans of that nature. After this nerdy, supremely douchey display any on the fence fan like myself can't wait to see NiP lose. Gamesmanship (and when you win 1 round of a possible SEVEN that's what it is)from a frontrunner who got dismantled in OT is pure extreme garbage and if they had won they would have really seen a terrible backlash from the community, just lucky they didn't.
