VeryGames to ESWC final over NiP

VeryGames have for the third time in a row defeated NiP in a best-of-three, this time in the semi-final of ESWC 2013 with a 2-0 score (16-13 on de_cache, 19-16 on de_nuke).

After over a year of dominance, NiP were sent home by VeryGames in the last two tournaments, and today they met once again in a battle for the grand final of the Electronic Sports World Cup 2013.

This was the third NiP vs. VeryGames clash in four weeks

The match began on de_cache with VG on the Terrorists side, and they took a quick 5-0 lead. Nevertheless, it was NiP on the other side so running over them was never an option, and that proved true immediately as the Swedes made it all square 5-5.

Adil "ScreaM" Benrlitom's couple of entry headshots on Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund and Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg opened up the 11th round, sending VG into the lead again with 6-5.

NiP's in-game leader Richard "Xizt" Landström won a 1vs2 situation to even things up at 7-7, and NiP suddenly ended up in their first lead after the last round of the half, 8-7.

It didn't last long though despite 3 great headshots from the pistol master Lindberg, as VG won a 2-on-2 situation to even the score at 8-8.

The score was tied on two more occasions, at 9-9 after NiP won the early buy, and at 11-11 as Nathan "NBK" Schmitt brought VeryGames back into the game with a big 1-on-2 clutch. This was Schmitt's time to shine as he added another clutch, this time a 1vs1 to put his team back up 12-11.

That produced money problems for the Swedes, and they behind 14-11. The all-important round 26 looked to be a pathway to NiP's comeback, but Richard "shox" Papillon took out 4 enemies and had a huge 1-vs-3 clutch to put VG on match point 15-11.

NiP were still not completely out and they brought the score back to 15-13, but Papillon was the difference maker as he once again clutched, this time a 1-on-2 to win on de_cache 16-13.

The second map was de_nuke, on which NiP demolished the French-Belgian team only 6 days ago the the EMS One Finals. However, VeryGames repeated their start from the first map and went up 5-0 as Terrorists, with Edouard "SmithZz" Dubourdeaux sitting on 13-0 score at one point.

NiP once again proved tough to break, as they slowly came back despite Papillon's 3-kill round for 6-2. One of the superstars in the Swedish team, Lindberg, finally got on the scoreboard in round nine and made 3 kills which put his team back on track and led to a 6-6 score shortly after.

friberg kept NiP's hopes alive on de_nuke

Adam "friberg" Friberg was the man of the half, as he clutched a 1-on-2 for 7-6 and then a 1-on-1 for 8-7, giving NiP another minimal lead before the sides changed.

The Swedes finally won their first pistol round of the series and got up to a 9-7 advantage, but two great entry kills by Benrlitom sabotaged their efforts and propelled VG to win an eco, later making it 9-9.

Despite that, Friberg was still the best player in the server, especially after another 3-kill round that brought the score to 10-9.

The first larger difference in favor of NiP came at 13-9, and again at 14-10 after Friberg's masterful 1vs2 in the lower bombsite when he scored two headshots through the hole in the door.

VeryGames went for a desperate buy and it seemed to pay off, but the reply was stern, and NiP went on map point 15-11.

Just as it seemed we were about to move on to map three, Schmitt somehow clutched a 1-on-3 situation with a fiveseven at the lower bombsite, keeping VeryGames in the game. That turned out being the key moment in the match, as the French-based side went on to even the score and put the match into overtime.

Fortunately, ESWC changed the rules before the tournament so the match didn't end here, but it wasn't prolonged by much either as Papillon & co won 19-16 to the delight of the crowd gathered in front of them on the mini-stage.

NiP is clearly superior than VG, in every single way. NiP lost because they they did not practice much on cache. And they are absolutely right, de_cache is a competely random, retarded and useless map. Also, NBK won a very, very, very 1vs3 lucky clutch in a very crucial moment. VG never did, and never will, win NiP in a bo3 in classical maps. This is a fact you all need to know.

Are you guys blind? You can't see over your own fanboyism and ignorance. VG wins over NiP are based on luck. "Why do you say that?" Well that is simple: just look at the scores, when VG wins it is like 1-4 rounds of difference, and what that means? VG wasn't able to win the map by their own ability and competence, NiP blundered in some moment of the match (like NBK 1 vs 3). In the other side, NiP wins are based in their knowledge, tatics and skills. That is why thy are nr. 1 and will be forever. NiP never lost a SINGLE bo3 match in classical maps since the existence of CS:GO.

You do realize that you are the one that isn't able to overcome his fanboyism and ignorance, right? Yes, VG clutched rounds, but so did NiP. Also, clutching important rounds also requires skill, even though the other team might make some mistakes during those rounds. All your arguments make no sense at all.

Wow, I thought the third time would be enough for you. I'm asking you then, if they really didn't practice cache as you claim, why was it among the maps they played ? They already lost to VG last time on cache, supposedly due to the same lame excuse (that they didn't practice it). So this time if it was the case they should have veto it at first sight right ? Yet they didn't :). Like NiP never won any very very very lucky clutch situation ? If you really think so you're completely blind sorry to say. Just so you know, the first Bo3 VG won against NiP was on "classical maps" (a term which doesn't make sense by the way, the maps which are picked up by tournaments have to be practiced, otherwise it's your own fault if you lose on it). But you can keep trying to find excuses for every time NiP lose to VG man. It'll only hurt you a little more when your excuses will be shut down by facts one by one.

oh yeah so much superior... Sry but VG would have won against fnatic ^^. You don't even realize how biased you're are. To be blind to the point of denying three straight losses, it must really be painful. Now what's your excuse against fnatic ? Lack of motivation again ? Bad luck ? Bring it on man, I'm curious.

VG as a name holds an incredible legacy. You are just clueless as to what that is. Finally they are showing the 1.6 diehards what they can bring to the table.

Like I said many times before: NiP missed the right moment to "fix" their lineup. And that will cost them in total between 100-150k. Talking about friendship and stuff is cool and all, but at the end it's a "sport" and their "job", so success must be their main focus. In what sport do you find a team that's supposed to be the #1 but sticks with players that aren't good enough anymore for a time like that? f0rest and GTR should actually know about that. They are the prime examples of professionals going for the success (leaving fnatic in favor of SK and stuff..).

You reply to a post which is stating that performance should be a higher priority than friendship in a competetive game where there is financial gain at stake. With your post you pointed out that GTR & f0rest had a bad game, yet we all know they are overall on a whole other level than the rest of their team. So again, what's your point?

maybe that they can still win any team if those 2 dont play that bad for them? if 2 of teams best players play bad its normal that the best team (not saying they are, but lets assume for this example) looses to 2nd best team. and that doesnt change the fast whos the best team, so why do roster changes is a team thats currently top1?

Indeed f0rest really had a bad game. In fact I never saw him playing so bad in all of the past 6 years. BUT: This guy played like a god for the past 14 months. Almost never struggled. Always showed insane performances. At some point a day like this had to come. Everyone has a bad day at some point. Now the thing is: In such situations you need team-mates who can step up and play even better than usually. But if you got a team-mate that barely can't keep up on a normal day and nees "to get carried" you simply will lose if you best-player struggles.

f0rest played really well you're right, but it i wont say he never struggled nor he was always insane. f0rest had a lot of rounds where he seemed to dork around, in comparison to get_right who was always consistent. I know what you're saying, but fifflaren played really well the last few matches and i doubt they would kick him, cause i dont think gtr or f0rest are thinking its fifflarens fault but theirs.

He's still far away from the required level and IMO it's not necessarily him getting better and better, it's more his team-mates showing some weakness (EMS finals friberg and Xizt underperformed, now f0rest,..). I'm following his progress sine 14 months and to answer your question: yes.

So you're telling me that NiP should have removed friberg who dropped 40 frags today or Fifflaren who potentially played better than f0rest and Xizt in this tournament, as well as he played better than Xizt at EMS Raidcall overall. How is that trolling again? Instead logic says that you're retarded

Never said anything about removing friberg. But yes, I would remove Fifflaren. He barely played any better than f0rest today, who probably had the worst day of his whole career (actually Fifflaren was still worse; and Xizt was clearly better as well). His average performance is way under the average performance of his mates. And one has to be completely delusional to disagree with that. On EMS he only played strong against the easier teams but when they had to face the stronger opponents and it mattered the most he under-performed as usual (and was clearly worse than his mates). But yes, on that tournament he actually showed the best performance since the beginning of GO. Still not enough...

They don't need to fix anything. They're still clearly at least the top 2 in the world, with VG being the other one. VG is just on a roll right now. You can't expect NiP to get #1 every time. Friberg still one of the best entry fraggers out there. Xist a great leader and also still beastly in individual skill. Fifflaren has shown to step up when like last week and hasn't performed awful these times around. Also fiff's energy is strongest amongst NiP, so I think he gives NiP the fire to bounce back sometimes. They've been together for the longest time (1.5 years) amongst all the other teams in CSGO. You change the lineup now, NiP's gonna need a massive adjustment considering the chemistry between them is so strong. It's funny you say gtr and f0rest when they're the ones that needed to step up this tournament. Even though these 2 are the most consistent in the past, the other 3 have stepped up on many occasions. Not all 5 members have to be equal in skill. I don't think ANY team out there has all equal members. There's always 1 or 2 guys that slightly edge out above the rest. A team can still win a lot of tournaments with distinguish-ably skilled sets of players. That's where roles come into play and NiP does a fine job with managing that.

Of course they need to fix their lineup if they want to stay on the top in the future. It's just obvious. Actually it was a miracle that they were able to stay on the top although they clearly had some weak point in their team. Look at VG. They failed so often against NiP and kept changing their lineup. After several lineup changes they finally got a team able to win against NiP. It's now on NiP to improve their lineup. But you're right: They can't change the lineup now. It's the wrong situation. Not enough time for the adjustments. And that's why I said "they missed the right moment to fix their lineup". edit: So what's Fifflaren's role in the team? And for god's sake: Don't come up with some bullshit like "baiter", because such a role doesn't even exist in CS. Don't you think it's a shame that one of the best riffle-players on the planet (f0rest) has to play the AWP just because his team is lacking a good AWP player?

Rather than change the lineup, they need to work on their strats and coordination better against VG. They were a bit indecisive against VG. A lot of missed opportunities and clutches from even gtr and f0rest. There's always something else to improve that doesn't involve changing a lineup.

Fifflaren's role is simple, he is called a "Support" player, that player does all the jobs for the team in terms of executing strats and cleaning out bombsites, he is the guy who will plant the bomb and let f0rest/GTR go for the kills. He is basically the guy that does the jobs no one else wants to do, and it worked for them ever so well in the 87 map win streak. Changing things now and in the future (unless required to) would be a poor move. For example, VeryGames had to make changes to their line up, they were forced to by originally RpK who retired at the turn of the year because his work in real life would have been a hinderance to the team. They then made the change for kennyS because unfortunately Ex6tenZ is an in-game leader who likes to mentor players, and kennyS was one of those players he was mentoring which took away from his own performance in game, so the decision was to bring in Shoxie who had been around in VG before and gave them the chance to change things up in terms of going to NiP playstyle to drop the AWP and go full rifle with SmithZz/Ex6tenZ picking up the AWP when they need to. NiP don't need to change things around just because they have lost a few tournaments on the bounce, and it isn't because Fifflaren is a constant bottom fragger (when in these two tournaments EMS/ESWC) he has shown that he can outfrag and he has shown that he does perform. They just have to work harder and fight for that number 1 spot. Xizt mentioned that they are in the middle of going back to what was successful before and that may well be the reason why they haven't won today because they are still adjusting, maybe VeryGames have finally found a way to shut down NiP from executing some well worked strats on them. We just don't know, but what we do know is that ALL teams go through ups and downs, and you don't need to change the line up to overcome them. They will find a way, and whilst DHW is soon, they know full well that next year they will have chances for more money, so all they need to do is work harder than everyone else and try and re-establish that they are the best team in the world.

It's funny how people try to find a way to justify his poor results...at the beginning the excuse was him being forced to play the awp, then it was him being the one peeking and now the most stupid explanation: support-player. But the last one is actually the closest to reality: Although he tries to peek from time to time, he mostly fails at it, so he became more and more a support-player. But the thing is: As a support player you can't any longer explain the lack of frags. Otherwise you haven't understand CS. It's not like the fact that f0rest and friberg have to peek around corners makes it easier for them to get a lot of frags, in fact they have to risk a lot more than their mates. You're talking like a support-players suffers from having to play a more defensive role, but it also reduces the risk of dying and it highers the chance of getting in situations where the enemy is the one who has to show initiative (like defending a bombspot as T). A support-player doesn't automatically has a worse k/d-ration than his mates. There are hundreds of examples in the history of CS. A support-player actually has the best job to get a consistent amount of frags and less deaths than his mates. By the way: Lately you often see Fifflaren trying to copy GTR's role, playing like a lurker. But obviously he's not even half as good in that role as GTR. "all the jobs for the team in terms of executing strats and cleaning out bombsites" That's bullshit. It's neither the thing a classic support-player does nor is it what Fifflaren does (that's a play-makers role, and in case of NiP this was often Xizt's part; deciding the final attack, getting on the spot as second, cleaning the bombsite; that's why Xizt makes a lot of mid-round frags while friberg and f0rest do more in the early round and players like Fifflaren and GTR do most of their work in late-round). "it worked.." Yes, worked. But their opponents became stronger. "Changing things now and in the future (unless required to) would be a poor move." Yes, let's just be happy that they now end up on 4th place. "he has shown that he can outfrag and he has shown that he does perform" Never against the top-of-the-top teams. If you think they didn't already work as hard as possible you clearly don't know GTR. They're probably working harder than any other team.

I don't have anything to say about this, but if you believe Fifflaren does not bring anything to the NiP table, then you obviously don't know CS, and haven't watched any of the recent matches with him in. Statistics are only part of the puzzle to CS, there is much more than purely just fragging in a team_based_game. Blaming Fifflaren for stepping up immensely in recent weeks is the wrong thing to do considering it hasn't been directly his fault. As I said, all good teams have ups and downs, team player changes can make things good, but they can also make them bad as well.

Of course he does bring something to the team. I would never disagree with that. He's a great player. He's just not good enough (anymore) for the world's best team (what doesn't make him a bad player), he doesn't bring enough to the team (ps: I didn't say "anymore" because he got worse, but because the other teams became stronger). Also my opinion isn't just made up on stats. It's the result of me watching every NiP game since the very beginning. "Blaming Fifflaren for stepping up immensely in recent weeks" What the heck...why wouldn't anyone blaming Fifflaren for stepping up? It's true that he improved lately, but he's still not on his team-mates level and the fact that some of his mates were struggling recently made his performance (in comparison with his mates) looking better than usual. Still he's not even average compared to his mates and in the most important matches against their hardest opponents (AD and VG) he keeps showing poor performances (the only matches he recently surprised with his performance were against clearly worse teams like mousesports).

But you are blaming him. That's my issue here, he is still putting in performances and you and some other parts of the community sit there and consistently berate him because of his "statistics". What many people forget including yourself is that pro players read these forums, read these news headlines and the comments, and that affects them. Of course constructive criticism is welcomed, but you are simply saying "OMG FIFFLAREN IS NOT ON HIS TEAM MATES LEVEL". That is not how a team_based_game works, you don't need 5 players all of equal skill level as that is not possible, there has to be players who do jobs for the team, execute certain strats for the team, and not even have the role of fragging in a team. If anything, the match today against VeryGames proved two things Friberg can step up, but it isn't always enough when GTR & f0rest are not playing as well as they should be. For someone who proclaims they have watched every NiP game from the beginning your knowledge of how their team works is beyond amusing. Out of curiosity, have you ever thought that some teams anti-strat and have a way of stopping GTR/f0rest be effective in their fragging roles. NiP's issue since losing their dominance is their ability to adapt and read the game as well as a team like VeryGames. As I come from the Source background, I know that VeryGames strong points was that Ex6tenZ would regularly watch other teams in action, and then adapt his own strats in game to suit his teams needs. NiP did that early on up until Spring, and haven't really had much to respond against teams like VP/AD/VG in their losses, they have looked a bit lackluster and have lacked ideas on how to break down the defence of their opposition. That is not a players fault, and bringing in someone else would not change that outcome.

I'm blaming him? All I'm saying is that he's not good enough for a team that's supposed to be the #1. I don't give a fuck if you got an issue with that, it's my opinion and if you wouldn't be that much of a fan-boy you would probably recognize it yourself. "berate him because of his "statistics". Can't you fucking read? I already told you that my opinion isn't just based on stats. "What many people forget including yourself is that pro players read these forums, read these news headlines and the comments, and that affects them." Oh god please, has this ever been different? It has always been that way (since the beginning of CS as en esport title) and it's the same in every real sport. That is something a pro needs to be able to deal with. Holly fucking cow. Now you continue explaining me that there exist different role in a team. Like it's some kind of insider knowledge. When I'm saying he isn't on his mates level I don't fucking say it because he makes less frags, there ARE different roles in a team and not every player in a team can and must be a madfragger, I'm saying it because he plays his role not good enough compared to how good his mates play their roles. His mates are top-notch in what they're doing while he simply isn't top in what he's doing. The history of CS is full of brilliant support players (unfortunately a lot of them never got the respect they deserved because they were standing in the shadow of their mates) and you could tell that they are top in their supporter-role, but you simply can't say this about Fifflaren (and when I'm thinking about it I never ever saw a support-player in a top-team who was/is statswise so clearly and consistent behind his mates than Fifflaren, only certain IGL showed similar characteristics but still not as clear as Fifflaren does; but I probably shouldn't have said that cause now you immediately interpret my whole opinion as a result of stats). And no, you actually should have players of equal skill, in terms of a team that's supposed to be the #1: the highest skill possible. But skill isn't equal fragging, I mean skill relative to what they're supposed to do for their team (the "role" they play). Today's matches proved one thing: If either f0rest or GTR has a bad day and the other can't step up or even both perform worse than usual the team is lost against enemies like VG and AD. "For someone who proclaims they have watched every NiP game from the beginning your knowledge of how their team works is beyond amusing." Oh please shut the fuck up. First of all: What exactly did I say about "how team work" that is wrong and amusing? Second of all: I bet my ass I understand much more about how teams work on top level than you, irrespective from the version of CS. "..have you ever thought that some teams anti-strat and have a way of stopping.." No shit! Really? Never thought about that in all the years of being IGL and analyzing demos. Seriously: If you really think todays loss against AD and NiP were the results of genius anti-strats hindering GTR and f0rest showing their full potential you're fucking blind or you just don't understand CS. NiP's mains strength in the past year was the fact that their playing-style almost always made it possible for them to be the one dictating the game-type. That was mostly the result of their brilliant individual skill, their outstanding mid-round-decision-making and the fact that their loose play-style is very hard to anti-strat. It's not like VG found specific ant-strats, in many ways they just copied NiP's way of playing (what in my opinion was only possible by bringing in shox), they improved their team-play and decision-making in general (in comparison to early 2013 they play much better in situations that weren't expected to happen) and with shox they became stronger individually. Anyway, keep lying to yourself and claiming every critic on Fifflaren is just the result of lacking CS knowledge, being biased and too focused on stats.

Although this will cause some hate-comments: I would definitely ditch Fifflaren. I'm not hater or something (actually I like this guy a lot), but as a NiP fan I want to see the best team possible and Fifflaren just isn't a part of that team (don't get me wrong, Fifflaren is a very good players, but just not good enough for a top3 team). I don't know who would be the best replacement. Sweden has a lot of talented players. From my experience the only way to find the best replacement is by doing a lot of testing. But if you want me to say some names: The first players I would test are MODDII and Delpan.

Yep, xizt under-performs lately. And so did friberg (at EMS he played extremely bad, compared to his usual level). But I wouldn't change more than 1 player at the time cause changing more than 1 players is even a bigger risk and it needs more times for the adjustments. Xizt and friberg may have some bad time, but overall they've done great. Fifflaren is the opposite: Overall he under-performs and now since his mates struggles his performance (compared to his mates) is "almost average".

You're right, it's not about friendship. A team's chemistry is not about friendship either. The argument of the ones who think changing NiP's line-up would be a mistake (I count myself among them) is that they played together for so long that they basically know each other by heart. Sure, sometimes it hurts a team to stay together for too long. But here I don't think it's the case, because NiP is successful against any other team except VG, and they do well at any tournament they attend to. Of course you could kick Fiff to replace him with someone with a better skill cap. But doing it has more chances to hurt the team than the opposite. But of course, if they find the right guy, practice a lot and achieve the same level of chemistry than with Fiff, sure, it's possible. In the end, I think NiP's answer to their struggle is to question themselves and probably rethink things they were 100% sure about. Could be Fiff, but I don't think it is.

"NiP is successful against any other team except VG" Forgot about Astana? At EMS they lost against both. And I can even see them losing against fnatic or SK in a BO3. "and they do well at any tournament they attend to." Well that depends on the standards you've set. Last two tournaments they didn't even reach the final. Actually even before they started to struggle (I remember them almost dropping out in the group-stage against todays SK, losing against fnatic, dropping out in the semi-final against VP)... I know that's still not a "bad performance" but as a NiP fan I want them to be the #1. "But doing it has more chances to hurt the team than the opposite." Yes it's a risk. But a risk worth trying it. But now is clearly the wrong time for such a risk. Not enough time for the adjustments..

"Forgot about Astana? At EMS they lost against both. And I can even see them losing against fnatic or SK in a BO3. " Of course, there was a few losses here and there. But none like what VG did to them. Overall they are still consistent right now. "and they do well at any tournament they attend to." Yeah well, if you expect a team to be number one, you're not being objective then. But objectively, their performance is still worthy of a top2 - top3 team, which is pretty much the dream of any pro team. They can bounce back before DHW in my opinion.

Ex6TenZ is probably the most underrated player of all. He made incredible progress. I am talking specifically about the skills (aim). This match was great, when it comes to him. About the teamwork and team lead is probably not what to say. He makes it probably the best in the world. Without him there would be no success...

You all are talking about players.. But i think players doesnt mean all, at the very top level when human is trained to be a virtual killer, marginals between players are so thin that there is no more a battle between highest skill levels. I'd say NiP is using worse hardware than VG.. Nip is usin SteelSeries mice versus VG using Razer. IMO Razer DA 2013 is simply more accurate and consistent than any SteelSeries mouse.. That is what gives VG the lead for now..

Im not talking that its this time.. Razer mice have always had a better performance. But NiP had the lead skillwise before so it compensated the hardware difference. Now when all the players are 100% of their capabilities hardware is the only thing that could be improved..

Please explain me how come can a map be random? Based to my experienses Every wall and object in de_cache stays at their places and doesnt move around randomly.. in cache you can see a player and kill it if you react fast enough and aim correctly.. player vs player and also the map stays the same even after changing ct to t or t to ct..........

i dont get all this "nip have to replace fiff and friberg" if theyre consistently coming in 2nd and losing only to the best team in the world what reason do they have to change their lineup? if theyve shown that they CAN beat vg and if they dont they still come in 2nd most of the time id say thats still good. why replace 2 players and risk coming in top5 instead of top2?

That's like telling VG they shouldn't have brought in shox because they were consistently #2 behind NiP. Nobody wants to be #2. If NiP don't win DHW, they're going to change their lineup.

Hmmm... that's debatable. I think VG is currently a better team, but I think NiP can still beat them on a good day. I'd give them something like 40-60 odds in favor of VG in their next matchup. I do believe that if they don't win DHW/100k, irrespective of who they lose to, they'd look into making changes.
