ESEA agrees to $1m settlement

E-Sports Entertainment (ESEA) has agreed to a 1 million dollar settlement with the state of New Jersey over the bitcoin scandal that rocked the company earlier in the year.

Back in May, the eSports community learned that a bitcoin client had been coded into the ESEA client, which allowed the company to raise bitcoins, an online currency, when the users were not playing any game.

The complaint lodged by the Attorney General of New Jersey, together with the Division of Law and the Division of Consumer Affairs, also stated that this malicious code enabled ESEA to "monitor the computers" of 14,000 users in this state and across the United States.

It is estimated that during the time that this bitcoin client was operational, ESEA raised $3,602.21 through this illegal process.

With this deal, ESEA is obliged to play the state of New Jersey $325,000 with immediate effect. The remainder of the $1 million figure is suspensed for 10 years and will be cleared after this period, provided that the company avoids future violations of the law.

In a statement written by Eric "lpkane" Thunberg, the ESEA chief stressed that the company "does not agree with the Attorney General's account of the Bitcoin incident."

"The press release issued by the Attorney General about our settlement represents a deep misunderstanding of the facts of the case, the nature of our business, and the technology in question,” Thunberg notes.

Furthermore, ESEA has vowed to publish a statement in the coming weeks to provide "a detailed explanation" of the company’s policy, while revealing that the employee who was behind this incident was terminated.

"Additionally, regular audits will be conducted by a third party specialist in order to ensure that we maintain a secure environment and protect your privacy," Thunberg added.

so they agree to pay up to $1M, suggesting they have the money for it and that renting counter strike servers is a very profitable business.. i don't get why valve doesn't set up 128 tick servers and a ladder system as a premium service..

everything this case shows me that esea is making a lot of money essentially by renting game servers, since they can afford to pay such high settlement costs if valve were to "cut the middle man" they could have their own premium service that could easily replace companies like esea and significantly increase their revenue, which is what drives the game to stay alive and get updates / support in case you didn't notice, ever since valve introduced the skins and micro payment systems we've been getting more and more significant updates to the game, not to mention valve-sponsored events like DHW that also contribute to bring more attention to csgo if valve decides to step it up and provide the same service currently being provided by companies like esea i believe that it will be one more step towards keeping the game alive for a longer period

A class action law suit would need to be filed for all the parties involved, then they slpit the money to all the people until the amount is zero. Which I believe is is still on going for trial. But in this case they were sued by the actual state of NJ i believe.

if you think that ESEA only made $3,602.21 off the bitcoining scam. You ARE NUTS! When this happened people did the math of how long it take to mine bitcoins and the amount of users they used. I think they came out with just a little under 100k worth of bitcoins. I know it still is less than what they have to payout, but they made much more than what they stated.

We were fine before ESEA and if it died we would still be fine. The pro level would be dead most likely but playing for fun makes more sense to me anyway. I"m not trying to be a pro im trying to have fun. One could argue our scene was even more competitive before ESEA ever came around.

i was talking about pro-scene exactly, it is pretty obvious that playing for fun won't die, what i was saying is that there will be no leagues left for NA teams at all.

Could be haha i dont even know anymore, but im sure some smaller leagues would come about. But euro is always gonna dominate our scene at this rate anyway so maybe it is time to go back to basics and start over new.

What makes you think $350k is anywhere near ESEA can't pay? Please dont post uniformed comments, punishment is well put and i also like d the nice touch of having a 3rd part contractor to regularly check for privacy concerns.Gj 'murica law on this.

lpkane signed a document saying that, essentially, they denied all of the State's allegations and would pay the settlement to avoid going to court. So he basically did the equivalent of testifying "not guilty" and sticking to it when they found your DNA at the crime scene. What a pig.

It's not silly. It's speculation. Last season of ESEA Invite ended up with three out of four European teams bailing out due to high cost, prize money is not that big, my speculation is they aren't making tons of money. Especially they don't have $300k to spare.

they have approx 20k subscribers. 20k x $7 a month = $140,000 a month. obviously they have costs to maintain, but they are certainly profitable. we may see a drop in the quality of ESEA to help make up for the costs but this shouldn't be a death sentence.

Bad business practice from the start. They had a great business model as well, if they done this properly they could have had the best gaming league in the world and made a fortune legitimately. Now look at them, this is what greed and corruption has led them to.
