Carmac: "CS:GO not viable for IEM"

ESL chief Michal "Carmac" Blicharz has explained why it is unlikely that CS:GO will be played at Intel Extreme Masters events.

In recent months, CS:GO has witnessed an exponential growth, both in terms of the number of players and in the prize money that is up for grabs in tournaments worldwide.

During EMS One Katowice, CS:GO reached over 167 thousand concurrent players, a new record, making it the second most-played game on Steam, according to an article at PCGamer.com.

Still, we are a long way from seeing Counter-Strike back on the IEM stage, claims Michal "Carmac" Blicharz, who explained that CS:GO still does not fit the concept of a global event.

"CS:GO is one of the major games in esports, once again, which is really fantastic, but it is not a good fit for Southeast Asia or china, for example," he told ongamers.com.

"That takes away a little bit of opportunity for us to use it in IEM to the fullest.

"IEM is also logistically limited, we only have one stage, so we cannot have multiple games being played.

"Therefore, due to logistical and geographical factors, we created ESL One for games like Dota 2 and CS:GO."

You can watch Blicharz's complete video interview with ongamers.com by going here.

Logic? Where is that logic? "CS:GO [...] is not a good fit for Southeast Asia or china, for example," So it's good that for ex. in every single major StarCraft 2 tournament since 2 years wins only Koreans? This year in Katowice at finals, for 16 players was only one NONkorean player (SWE), who lost btw his first map and decide to forfeited his game after that, talking some bullshit about soundproofing etc. Well, probably he knew that his chance are equl to zero. Pretty much the same situation with LOL, they invited KT Rolster Bullets which actually isn't even top 5 Korea, and they were able to easly rape all teams and that including 3:0 win over fnatic in final. So for Carmac and ESL it's good to support games where Koreans dominate whole world, but when Europa and America are pretty good in something it's not worth to support it as much coz some Asians decide to play some retarded Sudden Attack instead fallow the world? Maybe if ESL put CS:GO to IEM and make some Global Challenge for ex in Singapore or Chengdu some Asians saw potential in this game? Maybe ESL should start promote this game in Asia, instead just waiting for some fucking miracle, that suddenly Asians start playing CS:GO.

Of course, have you seen pictures from cities in china? It's overcrowded, and I wouldn't feel comfortable walking on those streets, being touched by 100.000 people everyday! They are smart as hell too, that's why they are good at lol and dota etc. Why cs isn't popular there is another question to Ask tho. Probably afraid of not being best at something..

In Portugal and in all world. Montecristo said it, the casters said it. They didn't qualify for worlds due to their OGN system point. Do you work with IE? Cuz you're slow as hell.

WTF are you talking about? KT Bullets top2 World? Yeah, sure! How losing to IM 2 and NJBS in LTE-A LoL Masters and being knocked up of group stage in HOT6iX made them top2 World? Do you fallow OGN? NO? Then pls, stop saying some stupid arguments which are probably creations of your imagination. Btw. they didn't qualify for S3WC coz they lost Season 3 Korea Regional Finals, which was a tournament of last chance for Koreans teams. Simple like that. Instead blindly fallow some stupid comments I advise you to check some results from last 2 months.

kt bullets were probably the second best team before worlds. yes they lost season 3 korea regionals finals but to SKT... yes they were pretty bad at Masters but they had a roster change(insec back to the jungle and leopard coming into top lane) BUT they played a lot better at IEM compared to masters. they are not out of HOT6iX btw. they went 1-1 agaisnt najin black sword and samsung blue... they can make it out of groups still. PLUS fnatic are not playing at their best and the best chinese teams atm were also not there. (omg and edward gaming)

That's total bullshit. After the line-up changes ktb are generally viewed as a top6-7 team in korea, behind teams like skt k, skt s, kta, njws and cj entus blaze. I do however think that this new ktb can be stronger than the old line-up with time

Lunatic Hai, eSTRO, RedCode, project_kr, WeMadeFOX, Tyloo, wNv. If 5 players from any of those teams started playing GO competitively, they could match some European and American opponents. Not to even mention Hacker Gaming who came out of nowhere in CPL 2006 and came in 5th, nobody had even heard of them before and they raped coL.

In what way is it less global than 1.6 was? At the moment it has the most players Counter-Strike have had in many many years - spread over 5 continents. It also have had the biggest spectator numbers we have ever seen for CS.

The Asian and South-American pro-teams are missing. For now there are no professional Asian and South-American teams that can compete with the European and NA top teams and whose organizations are financially strong enough to send their teams around the world. Also it seems that 95% of all CS:GO fans and viewers are from Europe and NA (mostly Europe tbh). I mean it doesn't make sense to have IEM Challenges in Asia if all the teams have be flight in from Europe/NA and all the viewers are also located in Europe/NA. In 1.6 you always had a lot of fans/viewers from Asia and South-America and there were always 1-2 strong Chinese teams (TyLoo, xNv), 1 strong Brazilian team (mibr) and 1-2 strong South-Korean team (WMF, eStro, lunatic). After the South-Korean CS teams and fans got somehow lost, CS 1.6 was dropped from the IEM. I think one big problem for GO is the fact that CS:O2 was released in Asia. edit: Also if you think about it, CS 1.6 had like half of his tournaments in Asia (eStars, SEC,..), while in GO we oly had 1 interntional tournamen in Asia so far. But maybe this will change in the future.

It's more that they would probably end up losing more by having two games that are pretty much the same. This could only be a PR answer to avoid exposing what you said, though carmac has stated several times that they don't have such clause in their contract with riot.

That is incorrect. While Riot might not give money and funding to such tournaments, there are many many lans with both games in the same lan, due to: A: How the hell would riot own this? The legality for them having copyright is shaky to none existent at best. B: They'd be pissing off every tournament organizer ever.

what are you talking about? Dota 2 got bigger stage LoL has ever had rofl. By IEM ones btw.. but the reason they can't host all stuff together is because the lack of space. ESL Frankfurt = Dota 2 tournament by IEM/ESL/EMS w/e people like to call it.

"Doesnt play nice", its a business, why would they allow their only "competitor" in the business to play a part in the tournament? Nonsense. Riot position is super logical

That is what I am saying, 'not playing nice' is a figure of speech basically meaning they will not do business with other MOBAs. I am not angry about this, I am a LoL fan, not a DOTA.

Seems like IEM could be the platform CS:GO NEEDS to make it a more global game. I know for a fact that people in South East Asia want to see CS:GO on a stage like that. But whatever it needs to be a safe investment and logistically possible at the end of the day, thank goodness for the creation of EMS One. EDIT: Would still be great to see Valve's "International" for CS, they could just call it "The Global Offensive" Carmac also said in his interview with Travis that this could be subject to change if GO becomes more globally played. So it's up to the Asian countries to really push it and start hosting more tournaments. The player base is there if more tournaments with better prize pools arise. People just need to take the initiative and stop being lazy! EDIT#2: Still annoying after the whole "CS COMMUNITY IT'S ON YOU! 70,000 VIEWERS ON ONE STREAM AND WE GIVE YOU IEM!" Kinda crushed that didn't we?

IEM comes with way more prestige, at least at the moment. Something tells me however that as EMS One grows as a brand (if that's the aim, because right now it does look like the shitty "volvo games go here" version of IEM in comparison) we might see it on par with the prestige that the Extreme Masters holds. Katowice looked good, for example.

The only reason for cs.go not being played in iem, as carmac say is asia. The asian people are so many that they by themselfs found the entire event (merchandise tickets etc..). As cs.go is a game played by european people in general its more logical $$$$$ to add `asian games`

Guys please, watch the ENTIRE interview with onGamers. This title is quite misleading. He explains clearly WHY CS:GO (and DotA) isn't included in IEM but in ESL EMSOne which are "Brothers" (he was the one that use this word to describe the tournament - BROTHERS). Before insulting Carmac, watch the iview and ALL HAIL Carmac for the brilliant job he has been doing with ESL/IEM/EMS and eSports in general.

fair does, at this point cs does not need a iem, and i think saying it needs this and that at this point is redundant...was only last year redeye was saying all cs needs is 70k con current viewers...saying things that clearly are not going to happen will not make things sound any sweeter...just come out and say it, cs has had its day and now its moba and wot turn in the spotlight...just remember iem everything goes round in circle and the day will come when you want a cs/quake title back ;p hmm thinking more about this, maybe it's not cs go that's being rejected from iem but valve, since it's dota and cs not being included...hmm maybe riot and esl/iem have a deal in place. would make more sense.

as long as ems one keeps on going strong with big prize pools then it's fine. Once the game grows it will eventually end up in iem anyway...

Carmac's right about there being a small scene in Asia but surely one of the ways to establish a scene is by offering tournaments to get people in Asia more interested in csgo. At the moment (might be wrong on this) Asian fps players are playing f2p fps like crossfire and counter strike online and in recent months both those games have held "world" championships were Asian teams have dominated. If csgo wants a chance to take those players then more big tournaments like IEM need to take the risk by trying out csgo in Asia, MSI Beat It is a start but no doubt the prestige of IEM would help grow the playerbase. Hopefully they can expand the EMS One brand for csgo and bring it to a level close to IEM.

The IEM name means a lot of prestige in many peoples ears, including mine. And sure, it doesn't really matter as long as there are other good CS tournaments.

In my mind EMS is IEM's counter part already, and alot of people use them as synonyms here as well (IEM = EMS)

well u can't really argue with reason tbh it is true that csgo has almost no Asian/African teams that can even come close to EU tier2 teams even due to the fact that its just not played over there. With the adding of South African servers now we might see it get picked up by alot more South African's which i hope on tbh making it grow more & eventually into Asia so that it will become playable on the IEM stage

That's just bulshit. We have a big base players, the only problem we have is we just dont have any competition to expose ourself. Anyway, CSGO would trashed SC2 at any day in SEA in terms of numbers. Anyway, we do not need IEM. We need The International.

as he said in the entire interview, he can remove a game from IEM if it doesnt fit anymore. So what is he waiting to remove Starcraft, because this us crushing out, IEM was the worst SC2 tournament in term of viewers. So if it's about business, i think he'll get more profits from having CS:GO in the IEM

The problem imo is not the lack of players in Asia but the skill, when vox the Australian team went to Asia we destroyed the Asian teams and got beat by the eu teams so big skill gap . If we got a few Asian teams who could do any good maybe the vieweres from Asia will roll in

The problem with asian scene is that we dont have any competition. No competition -> no motivation -> less pracc/less exp. Australia, though you guys only had CyberGamer, it's managed well with a good structure. It attracted teams to compete to beat each other, even though VoxE is just on another level even in aussie.

Valve made nothing to involve CS:GO in Asia, because there is Counter Strike: Online in Asia and Valve didnt even try to compete with him, so how can CS:GO be popular in Asia if Valve doesnt move their ass !

Thats not surprising. They won't have any Valve game because Valve dind't gave them any money, like Riot does. That's esports in a nutshell for ya, and thats what you expect of IEM. Lets just wait, CSGO is still growing, and you really can't tell where it'll stop, and Dota is taking over the world. Lets see for how long they'll be able to ignore Valve games.
