Titan: "We were forced to exit ESEA"

Titan have announced that they have been forced to withdraw from ESEA-Invite season 16 with immediate effect.

The French team were sitting fourth in the league, with 18 points from eight matches, and looked like a serious candidate for the LAN Finals, which will take place in late June in Dallas.

Titan justify the move with the fact that they were unable to register their newest recruit, Kenny "kennyS" Schrub, in the league due to team rosters being locked from last Sunday until the end of the season.

Titan won't be travelling to Dallas in June

This meant that Titan would have to play the remainder of the season, including the LAN finals if they managed to qualify for the event, with Richard "shox" Papillon, something that was impossible for the team.

Titan still tried to reason with ESEA over this matter, but the discussion proved "unfruitful", says Titan manager Jérôme "NiaK" Sudries, who labelled the rule about roster restrictions "archaic".

Below you can find the complete statement from Sudries:

"Today is a sad day for Titan and our CS:GO team, as we’ve been forced to withdraw from ESEA S16.

"Having begun the new season on March 19th 2014, our current results put us in a good position to claim a spot at the upcoming finals in Dallas. However, the organisers have decided to invoke the player change rule which prevents us from bringing Kenny “kennyS” Schrub onto the team, despite this happening two months before the actual LAN final.

"After a long and unfruitful discussion with ESEA to try and find a solution, we ultimately felt a need to go public with the issue; not only to present you with our side of the story but more importantly to highlight a rule which feels archaic in the current competitive scene.

"The rule regarding “Player Eligibility & Roster Restrictions” for the Invite division states that "Rosters will be locked two weeks before the end of the regular season". This in turn ensures weeks/months of unaltered lineups at the end of each season, and for this season that translated to a two month roster lock in place from April 27th to June 29th. In our case, coordinating our announcement of a player change with another organisation meant us going public with the news on Monday 28th April, just a few hours too late.

"But the issue is not being a few hours late; the issue is that ESEA does not exist in a vacuum. With a yearly tournament calendar including events and organisers such as SLTV StarSeries , ESL, FACEIT League, Gfinity , Fragbite Masters and Fnatic FRAGOUT league (just to mention a few), is it truly reasonable that a single organiser can implement a rule preventing player transfers covering such an extensive time period? With three seasons per year, ESEA is effectively trying to enforce a roster lock which covers way more than just ESEA.

"We are not against the idea of roster locks, but these require harmonisation between all major tournament schedules, which is not the case today.

"Also, as a personal source of disappointment, Titan and I had actively been working with the promoters of this season to facilitate conditions which would allow all European teams the chance to make the trip in case of qualifying. During ESEA S14, out of all the EU teams only NiP were able to make the trip, and the same pattern repeated itself last season when we ourselves were the only EU team represented at the LAN. For us, working closely with ESEA to prevent this from happening again was important and a way to help sustain the North American scene.

"These things considered, it’s with no small amount of bitterness that we withdraw today.  We hope, however, that this open letter will be a move in the right direction towards removing inappropriate rules which do not serve the interest or the progression of high level competition."

What do you think about Titan's decision? Should ESEA remove this roster restrictions? Leave a comment below.

"bitcoining?" While what ESEA did was not correct in anyway there's no rule to prevent anyone from bitcoin mining, ESEA just dropped it into their client hidden and completely unannounced (which is, again, wrong for them to do, just so you don't misunderstand me)

its stupid to change players on a roster during week 7 of a 9 week season. its also stupid to expect special treatment for rules that have been in place for years and are in place for very specific and very good reason. its also stupid for two organizations to not have made the switch on esea before the deadline and then announcing it to the public at the same time since they had access to the rules and knew this could be an issue from the start.

this has always been a stupid ass rule on several grounds, it has forced teams to attend the LAN finals with managers and ridiculous shit of the sort because of inflexibility and would you look at that, ESEA prefers destroying its EU division over swallowing their pride. it's one thing to prevent team hopping and attempting to stabilize the utter chaos that is NA CS, but this is fucking retarded. titan is not without blame though: "In our case, coordinating our announcement of a player change with another organisation meant us going public with the news on Monday 28th April, just a few hours too late." jesus christ, it's a fucking video game and these are e-sports we're talking about. i can't believe you're withdrawing from a competition because you had to wait until the "transfer" (rofl, you take yourselves too seriously) was made public to add a player to your roster. both parties are frankly laughable.

For NA... this is a EU team. The context of this rule was to prevent NA teams from screwing each other over at the last minute. That is completely different from what happened with Titan, one of the most stable teams in all of CSGO for the past 2 years. ESEA is only hurting itself for not seeing the bigger picture. This is what happens when you have admins who can't think for themselves, who view their rules as the 10 commandments.

I think this is a case of the letter of the law over the spirit of the law. I can remember when CAL implemented roster locks later in the season, due to massive roster changes in some of the teams who were going to make playoffs. It led to teams in the playoffs looking drastically different than the teams who got there in the first place. There is a time and a place for roster locks, but we also have to look at the late measure of the season. It's an unfortunate bind, but both sides need to be represented in the conversation.

sad rule i would say however i do feel that if the roster locks would happen it would indeed have to be on all tournaments and with a period of time in between so roster changes can happen if needed. 2 months before a lan finals is way to long alot can happen in 2 months sadly for titan they are the onces who got screwed over here.

the reason the roster locks take place 2 months before the LAN finals is to give a chance to teams to get cheaper plane tickets, the 8-9 week season ends at the beginning of May, the LAN finals take place at the end of June, thus giving some teams, who might not know if they're making playoffs till week 8 or 9 a chance to find a decent rate for a flight, the rosters lock so that the same team that finished the online portion of the season turns up to the LAN finals. I know most of the euros have their opinion that titan should be given a pass on the rule, but then the question is how long before the NA scene is back in the old days of teams changing 3/5's of a roster right before the finals, none of the euros had to deal with that cause in europe they have LAN events at least every other month or so and more online competitions. in NA its pretty much only ESEA, they're the only real proven viable competition at the moment, with both an online portion and a LAN portion and until that changes i dont see any reason to change the rule

While rules are rules, the rule is enforced on when the news about shoxxis departure was released, which bassically have nothing to do with the roster change itself, although its the only official statement they got, it bugs the hell out of me that you enforce a tournament rule based on a news press timestamp.

Although unsurprising, he's got a great point about the ESEA roster lock influencing more than just ESEA league and it should definitely be revised and a standard be created that all leagues should follow

shoxie didnt wake up one morning and decide "fuck this im leaving titan" i'm sure he and the team were discussing the matter for a few weeks/months. they had a deadline to make the decision and they missed it, 100% titan's fault. if you read titan's "long and lengthy" discussion with the esea admins, they were claiming they didnt know the rules on the roster locks, again 100% titan's fault

I agree completely, it is their own fault, my point is that the ESEA roster lock has an effect on more than just ESEA league, a standard should be created that all competitive leagues will follow, just as it is in football, basketball and basically all actual sports

if i remember correctly there were quite a few very games players that reached out publicly the INSTANT valve made changes to mirage. going out on facebook, hltv, etc in a public outcry searching for a consensus. this is an esea rule that has been in place for YEARS that they are only now speaking out against because they tried to break it. esea is an 8 week regular season before playoffs, the rosters lock in that 7th/8th week. it is perfectly reasonable. if titan had made their decision 24 hours earlier this isnt even a discussion

I'm not sure if you're just arguing to argue or you don't understand. I'm not saying Titan is right or anything, what I am saying is that that one rule of ESEA impacts more than just them and something must be changed or teams will withdraw because all it is is an inconvenience. Sure the rule has been there for years, and that's great when ESEA is bound only to NA and it is the only real league there. It is not great when ESEA becomes an intercontinental league, and has many many more leagues to work with. The ESEA roster lock essentially denies all teams from making any changes at all, even in leagues other than ESEA that they compete in, and that is ridiculous. All the professional leagues should come to an agreement on rules such as this one that interfere with going ons of multiple leagues. It is the best option for all and especially ESEA, because currently it is the only league that's creating this problem and teams will abandon it if they can't make changes because of one of the numerous leagues they compete in.

esea is using a rule that is present in all of professional sports, that's why it has been around for years and that is why no one complains about the rule until something like this happens and through their own fault they fail to make the deadline. the public outcry on the mirage changes is providing an example of a similar situation where people involved made statements immediately upon the announcement of the rule/map changes. titan poaching kennys from clan mystik hurts a 5-5 team on the brink of qualifying for the lan finals. esea is punishing them for it

a professional organization sticking to their long laid out rules is something the community should be applauding. a "professional" organization such as titan NOT knowing the rules of a tournament they are involved in and then writing a letter after the fact is something the community should be criticizing them for. when did titan complain about the rule before? oh right never

rules are rules. blame shoxie for this but you should follow the rules. quote from esea response "Furthermore, while discussing the situation after we denied Titan a special reprieve, it became evident that their team had been discussing the change since Copenhagen Games. During that period, they could have confidentially approached our League Admins or Commissioner to alert us of their forthcoming roster move and we could have worked with them to find a solution. "

Ok, surely Titan made a mistake by not informing ESEA sooner, or by not making sure they read and understood the rules correctly, but in the other hand, ESEA's stubbornness is becoming stupidity there: the deadline was Sunday, Titan announced the roster change fucking Monday. Sure, it's too late, but it's not like it affects the purpose of this rule in any way... They really need to be more flexible with their rules, they make themselves look like morons acting so strict. Plus, they're the real losers in the end, since they lose a top4 EU team (again), for a tournament supposed to make the top4 US fight against the top4 EU, it's sad for them. it's far from the first time it's happened as well. Let's hope for them that their tournament doesn't end up with only one EU team like last season...

Rules are there to be broken, sure in certain cases I can understand this rule. However in this case there is no good reason to uphold this rule. It's not like they are switching like crazy, they actually changed their line-up for a change. If you want to work in such rules, just give every team 2 or 3 roster edits before they go on lockdown.

Rules are rules, but Titan is not an ordinary team. They attract a lot of viewers. One might say: "That's discrimination!". Correct, but in order to grow (the game and even the competition) you gotta be flexible. At the end of that, ESEA is a business and this will lead to less revenue for them. Also, it would be good for the game itself. Exceptions will always be present around rules. Well, not in this game, it seems.

what nubs don't understand is that if ESEA allowed Titan to make final roster changes right before LAN, then all the other teams with roster issues would be entitled to changing their rosters too. ESEA has always had a strict roster deadline, this shouldn't come as a shock to anyone.

They didn't kick him but with the way he left there is a lot of tension left behind as he looks for his new team. I'm sure, 90% at least, it came down to ex6 ego vs shox's ego, and there is no squashing your ego for either of them.

The rule is in place because of American roster chaos... American teams can't keep the same line-up for more than a month, even in the professional teams it seems. Also, lots of players would play all season and then quit before the LAN, which costs ESEA money... so that's why they put this rule in place. It doesn't work that way for the European scene, though...

LU changes before lan finals are not possible... deal with it titan and bye After a long and unfruitful discussion with ESEA to try and find a solution, we ultimately felt a need to go public with the issue to start hate against ESEA?! hope u get a ban from esea for the next years

stupid rule made mainly as kick-protection for players without option team protection included when player leave by his own due to gaming house & personnal life in that case anyway sounds like Titan punished for being the second more stable pro roster after NiP on csgo , gg , need more suitable rules like that cause so many euro team at this final each time...
