No CS:GO in IEM season 9

ESL's Head of Commentary Paul "ReDeYe" Chaloner has confirmed that the ninth season of the Intel Extreme Masters will not feature CS:GO.

Last night, the ESL unveiled the first details about IEM season 9, which will kick off with an event in Shenzhen, China, from July 16th to 21st, which will also serve as a qualifier for the World Championship next year.

No details about the games that would be played this season were announced, but Paul "ReDeYe" Chaloner has guaranteed that Counter-Strike will not return to the IEM circuit just yet.

In March, ESL chief Michal "Carmac" Blicharz admitted that it would be very hard for CS:GO to be played at IEM events "due to logistical and geographical factors" as the game is not popular in areas like Asia.

Michal "Carmac" Blicharz said: "CS:GO is one of the major games in esports, once again, which is really fantastic, but it is not a good fit for Southeast Asia or china, for example," he told ongamers.com. "That takes away a little bit of opportunity for us to use it in IEM to the fullest. "IEM is also logistically limited, we only have one stage, so we cannot have multiple games being played. "Therefore, due to logistical and geographical factors, we created ESL One for games like Dota 2 and CS:GO."

A while ago it was said that CS:GO didn't have the global audience it needed in order to be put on the IEM circuit. I'm curious to know why 1.6 did but CS:GO doesn't. Used to love watching CS at IEM.

What I don't understand is the fact they talk "global game and global audience" yet StarCraft2 has been Korean dominated for well over a year now, and that hasn't stopped them keeping it in the IEM Circuit. I don't get Intel/ESL's reluctance on including it and at least giving it a run for a full season to see how it gets on.

would say csgo is about the same.. only good teams are from europe.. then you have two "ok" NA teams .. and thats basically the "csgo global scene" and some non-korean SC2 players could win tournaments with mostly koreans playing, i dont think any non-european team has won anything with more than 1 european team attending in csgo? not really bashing csgo, just dont think you can flame sc2 because both games are just as weak in "global esports"

"i dont think any non-european team has won anything with more than one european team attending" you're right, but i wouldnt even count it as a big international tournament with only one european team attending, it would be another thing if they had won while 2-3 european teams had attended. just too much class for NA teams in europe imo.

not enough competition in NA to help them sustain that level they end up in NA leagues battling semi-pro teams that anti-strat the shit out of them instead of playing their own game 4 teams could do some dmg internationally if there wasn't travel across the ocean involved, unfortunately they only have each other to drive the skill ceiling americans have a certain aim-heavy "style of cs" so progress is much slower than in EU where theres so many approaches playing against each other constantly

The popularity of sc2 has been in rapid decline for a long time now(pros retiring left and right) and people are not watching the streams anymore. For instance CS-pros(NBK,Scream,Pasha,Neo and the NiP-guys) get a lot more viewers than any of those sc-pros.If im not mistaken csgo has been on the rise lately. Also people like me who just dont like MOBA games feel pretty leftout from the e-sports scene if there is nothing more than LoL and Dota2 in the tournaments.SC still interests me as in watching the finals of a big tournament but i cba to see the groupstages or any of the other matches.

i personally never watch SC2, i just think both the games are similar where one continent completely dominates everywhere else. i think this will be the last season for sc2 if it keeps declining, and only good things for csgo as it gets bigger and bigger :)

Doubt it. As soon as the next SC2 expansion is released, the interest for SC2 will go up again, just as it did with the last. But it is only temporary, but it will probably give SC2 another season. Although the next expansion is actually the last expansion, and as we've seen with blizzard before, the last expansions tend to get really popular (SC:BW, Diablo 2:LoD, WC3:TFT). Also SC2 is stagnant, not declining.

absolutely not. from a business point of view it would make sense to include csgo and see it as an investment...pioneer steps like this have to happen if one wants to actively push the esports/fps/csgo scene. demand dictates supply, and on the other hand people only demand what is supplied.... asians would go crazy if all the worlds top teams would attend and would also agree to to some media shizzle. remember spawn's fanbase in asia?

and all the top teams would fly to the IEM stops? I'd like to think that, but if organisations strugle to fly teams to the US (last ESEA season), I dont think they will sent the players all over the world. Maybe NiP, Titan Na'Vi and VP, but noone else...

From time to time it draws big audience, problem is that most ppl watching are non-korean and with a game that is so dominant by koreans and ppl feel they cant "relate" to koreans the same way they do to their fav players from EU / NA. Its kinda strange all in all, from my own perspective if i wanna watch a game i wanna watch the best players play it, not the players that write funny stuff on twitter and interact with their fans on streams -_-

this wasn't my argument to prove that it was popular, and for that you don't need arguments but stats, and I'd like to see them if you claim that it wasn't (comparing with other games in Asia isn't what's gonna prove that cs wasn't popular, cuz obvisouly it wasn't as big as wc3 and sc broodwar)

Its obvious to everyone, that the Asian market never really was into CS 1.6. When 1.6 was at its peak, WC3 and Broodwar took all the attention. Without having legit numbers or anything, I would assume only like 10% of viewers were from Asian countries, and that is putting the percentage high.

was obvious GO is even less global than 1.6 was at then end of its days. would be pointless to make tour stops in Asia when all viewers and players are from EU and NA.

There was no dota2 on iem katowice because they have deal with RIOT creator of LoL, maybe now riot don't want to have cs:go as well on same events. ESL is a greedy bitch i'm sure when valve will start thinking about making new turnament they will be first to grab money. I hope next big event with valve support will be like dreamhack.

If you think about it why would we even care what the tournament is called if its a big tournament. It doesnt really matter if the tournament would be called something like "Scrotum-strechers Cup V" if we have best players playing and huge prizepools (they obviously go hand in hand).i just think that Valve could do something more like maybe include CS at The International.Just forget about IEM.EMS is enough.

Funny thing is that SC2 numbers are even lower than the ones of CSGO. But they keep it cuz its cheaper to buy the plane tickets for a few koreans so the tournament don't suck ass. Also SC2 and LoL are games that have been pushed by their devs from day 1, it doesn't surprise me a bit to see IEM so interested in keeping those games in knowing how much they win by having Blizzard and Riot as allies. PS: Valve as usual plays the role of the kid in the back eating glue.

Yeh, but they dont push it half as much as they should. They also stopped developing and/or sorting out numerous issues with the meta-game of SC2, because they "don't want to change anything at this late stage". WCS is a bit of a joke considering the Regions are completely fucked over. Should I go on? The fact that you seem to believe that Valve don't do anything, is another amazing feat of dbie's much knowledge. Valve took from DotA2 and in CSGO they split the profits of the sticker capsules from Katowice, between all 16 organisations as a way for orgs to make money from the game. They asked pros at Katowice how they would actually like to make revenue within the game instead of heavily relying on just Twitch stream support. Let's not even mention what they do with DotA2 either in terms of helping eSports. Valve strangely are playing their cards for the long term as opposed to Riot who throw money at LCS and hope it sticks.

"since day 1" lol do you even know when WCS got there? You do know Blizzard is actually receiving A LOT of criticism for not helping SC2. Also comparing blizzard to riot is so wrong. Riot paid to get their games featured in events, blizzard got paid to get their games featured, although I believe they dropped that policy now, but that was the reason MLG dropped WoW, because Blizzard wanted an absurd amount of money. If you think Blizzard help push their games you are very wrong. By the way, Valve does an amazing job.

?? is this for real? Based on what you are stating, it seems rather obvious you are new. I don't mind teaching you a little then. GomTV and kespa? Are you for real? Let me just refer you to this: gosugamers.net/starcraft/news/10265-bliz.. or this: giantbomb.com/starcraft-ii-wings-of-libe.. It was only last year when they formed the new WCS system they began "working" with Kespa. Kespa is not associated with Blizzard, are you drunk lol. There is a reason many believe blizzard is actually the reason for SC2 not becoming as big as BW in South Korea. Read about the dispute I linked above. Next time you try to be arrogant you should probably get your facts together. Bringing up gomtv and kespa was ridiculous, why would you start to argue against yourself? tl:dr: Kespa and gomtv has nothing to do with Blizzard, nice try though.

Have you even read the links you posted? Damn dude, you really must be new. google.com.pe/search?q=Blizzard+Starcraf.. Those links clearly say that Blizz didn't want to give sc2 broadcast rights to KeSPA, so they gave them to GOMTV who had to bring KeSPA in so Sc2 could take off in Korea. Who pushed all of this? Who else? Blizzard. Is Blizzard as pushy as Riot when it comes to make their game popular? Nope? Does Blizzard make a much better job than Valve pushing their eSport titles? Hell yeah. Read more than a couple of articles and learn about politics and businesses before spitting non-sense. 23yo? Was GO the first esport title you've ever played?

Are you drunk. Giving Gomtv broadcast right is not pushing it. They never invested any money into their scene except for Blizzcon. Valve invested a quite a lot of money. We would never have gotten 250k tournaments without them. Basically you already proved your lack of knowledge, why you continue is a mystery, however it is quite amusing. GomTV did all the work and honestly they did not do very well in Korea, Kespa has done definitely done better. Also gomTV no longer exist as it is now gom exp.

Because CS GO doesnt has a market in ASIA thats simple, Valve should do something to penetrate that market. Maybe doing a big tournament with the best teams of europe, In South America its almost the same, but the difference is because we love CS WORLd, The best teams from our Region are Brasilians, but Argentina and Chile has good teams too, COME ON VALVE DONT FOR GET ABOUT US.
