ESL One Cologne with $250,000

ESL have announced that ESL One Cologne will feature a $250,000 CS:GO tournament on August 14-17 at Gamescom in Germany.

After a very successful $250,000 tournament at EMS One Katowice in March, ESL have now announced their next community-funded $250,000 major, to be held in August at GamesCom.

Earlier today ESL shared a splash page with a countdown running down until 15:00 when the news about ESL One Cologne were set to be published.

Once again the top eight finishers from the previous major receive direct invitations for the event, leaving some top teams such as Titan and Natus Vincere without a spot for now.

Below is a list of the top eight finishers from EMS One Katowice. Six spots will be given through European qualifiers, one will be awarded to a North American team and the final spot will go to Australia/Oceania.

Poland Virtus.pro Sweden NiP Sweden TEAMGLOBAL Denmark dignitas
France LDLC Ukraine HellRaisers United States compLexity Sweden fnatic

Since LGB eSports no longer exists, ESL has decided to credit TEAMGLOBAL with the spot, with three members of the 3-4th place team participating as a requirement for keeping it.

The $250,000 prize purse will also once again be split up the same way it was during the last two majors, DreamHack Winter and EMS One Katowice, as follows:

1. $100,000
2. $50,000
3-4. $22,000
5-8. $10,000
9-16. $2,000

Qualifying methods for ESL One Cologne will be announced soon, and you can expect to find that information, as well as all other announcements, here at HLTV.org.

And your point being? It is two different games with two different markets? DotA2 being a slightly older game. Valve have done a great job with DotA2 but I prefer the majors we have spread across the year instead of one big one, which completely devalues all other competitions in DotA2 whereas the majors we have in CSGO completely help balance the scene massively and profits the scene. Instead of hyping for one month every year, we get to hype four times in a year and watch some of the best teams go head to head in the biggest prize tournament in our game. I don't see that as anything but good.

250K is a tremendous amount for any professional player. All this money on TI is not really good for the Dota scene imo, because only one huge tournament is never better than several big ones. With all these millions they could create a scene much healthier for the pros on the long term, and more enjoyable to watch as well, since they wouldn't have to wait one full year to get the best of the best fighting for a major title. Anyway, I guess they don't really care about that.

Well I have no doubt that Vox are the best team in Australia, however in saying that, they did place 3rd in CyberGamer's last season (online). Also one or two new top teams have formed in the last 5/6 weeks so they're definitely going to have to fight for their spot. But I actual question was where they were talking about their bootcamp, I assume behind closed doors.

I hope that they focus on team play and working more as a unit. That sounds like I'm criticizing them, but I'm not. I've watched a few of their games, and I feel like they could compete internationally but from what I've seen they generally get held back against the bigger teams because they don't play together as well. But, as with America, I'm sure it's hard to practice properly since there aren't a lot of good teams to play. If they put in time at the bootcamp, I've love to see them make a run outside of groups.

Yeah, I really don't care for the FIFA World Cup anymore either. I mean COME ON, 21 tournaments with the same format. /sacrasm well I couldn't really care for the money - as long as it is enough for everyone to sustain travelling and practicing. I just want to see the best CS, and I think beeing able to take 100k at home should ensure that. Really looking forward to this, ESL got the best production crew and Katowice was amazing!

Exactly. They really don't need to up the prizepool at all imo. All the hype that was around DHW and Katowice was immense, some of the best we've seen from CS. Sure, I guess more is good, but to be frank, if 250k creates the amount of hype and competition we've experienced before, I see no reason in touching that part. And for crying out loud, it's 250 thousand fucking dollars. This aint no online weekend cup prizepool. It's gonna be EPIC as you said. ESL truly makes the events they run a joy to watch!

Netcodeguides absolutely don't. Hard to say about Jumas/Mediocre/whatevertheirnameisnow. Until we see them perform at ESEA we can't really say if they're going to do well on LAN. I think they're a good team, but they have some huge question marks right now.

Well...at least they were rekt by iBP again and again...while coL still have the ability to compete with iBP. Although coL lose to iBP in a few matches, most of them are very close I think.

don't judge by american vs american match results reason for coL's success internationally is seangares's playing style and his ability to read euro teams. he makes better decisions vs euros because their style is more predictable and it makes sense. americans are random and impossible to predict, and most of the things they do don't make sense. dazed's style is more similar to euro teams, and that's why euros thrash his teams. so dazed's teams are kind of like weak euro team vs strong euro team. sean's teams are like strong american team vs strong euro team - that's the way I look at it anyway. a lot of people think that +/- swag will make the difference - but I don't think so. swag is an awesome player, but before that game on dust2 vs NiP, he was pretty forgotten and highly criticized. even NBK said when commentating that dust2 game "swag has yet to prove anything to me yet" (at the beginning of that match, of course :P) in fact, if you look @ swag's stats when playing aganist euro teams, he rarely has a positive K:D ESEA Global Finals - we'll see then :)

Yes ofc swag cant be the only reason why coL is playing like they are. I'd suppose they've lost their motivation etc. Except Hiko! And you might be right about the playing styles.. As you said we'll see how they do in the ESEA finals when the worlds top3 arrive there :)

Now it's gonna be interesting, because Germany doesn't have TOP TIER team. So top tiers won't have an advantage in finals. Unless Berzerk or some other german team would beat VP, NiP, HR, etc.

Ibuypower will def get an invite, seeing as they are the only other NA team with a solid sponsor to pay for their trip. Same probably goes for vox eminor. Besides from titan and na`vi im not sure any of those other teams are all that good. I mean what top teams sk or epsilon have beaten in a BO3?

Yeah but who did they beat? They got raped by nip in the group stage, won against berzerk who isnt even close to a top 10 team in the world, and in the quarter finals played against a mix team of semi-pro swedish players(lemondogs).

Much rather see the prize being like: 1st 90k 2nd 50k 3-4th 25k 5-8th 10k 9-16th 5k tbh that would make it better as every team gets paid quite good to go ;)

rofl 250k is more than enough, especially since it's more than one 'major' tournament per year. although, I could really see it both ways, because valve is making BIG cash on all these in game purchases and fees.

they could play atleast some online cups.i would find it pretty unfair to give them spot for free in 250k tournament just like that... dont get me wrong,i have nothing against south america or something like that and it would be great to have players like fallen back.but i rly dont think that they deserve qual in this tournament.if you want opportunity like you said, you should do something for it.noone gives you it for free

I'm quite relieved to be honest, I really thought Valve would sit on this until DHW. 2 months of preparation is just what the teams need in my opinion, hopefully the qualifiers will be held really soon so that the qualified teams have some time for themselves as well. Good luck to all these guys, as well as the guys from ESL, let's hope it'll be a great event!

Finally, I think this one will break the stereotype about "a winners at home", maybe somebody doesn't know, but, for notice: ESWC 2013 (France) - 1st.Clan-Mystik 2nd.Verygames DH Winter 2013 (Sweden) - 1st.Fnatic 2nd.NIP ESL One 2014 (Poland) - 1st.Virtus.pro SLTV S9 (Ukraine) - 1st.Natus Vincere DH Summer 2014 (Sweden) - 1st.NIP and so on... not without exceptions, but still. I hope, I'm not right, but there are no German teams, which could win it. I watched match between NIP and Berzerk on DH recently and was cheering for germans, but unfortunatly, some mistakes by them made NIP not to forgive them... That's my opinion, but I think, that's the first major lan where everything will be different. Thanks for attention, gl 2 all. P.S. easy for Na'Vi and f0rest (joking :)

Hehe, the video is kind of funny. Judging purely by the sound it sounds like an intro to Avengers kind of movie. Then I realized it is a tribute to the VP fluke.

Once again the top eight finishers from the previous major receive direct invitations for the event, leaving some top teams such as Titan and Natus Vincere without a spot for now. Cant u read mate? ;)
