shox powers Epsilon to beat HR

Epsilon came from behind to beat HellRaisers 2-1 and progress to the grand final of DreamHack Valencia (9-16 on de_mirage, 16-11 on de_inferno, 16-0 on de_dust2).

Following HellRaisers' close game against Outbreak, many wrote the Ukrainian team's chances off, and the defeat against Epsilon, particularly the 0-16 thrashing on de_dust2, proved that not all is well with Null element's side, even though they gave a good account of themselves on de_mirage.

HR, who started out on the CT side, got off to a flying start and strolled to an impressive 10-1 lead, with Epsilon looking completely helpless in their offensive moves. The Frenchmen managed to respond only in the latter stages of the first half and picked up three more rounds as they trailed HR 4-11.

In the second half, HellRaisers further enlarged their lead by winning the pistol round following an A rush that Epsilon could do nothing against. HR followed it up by taking the first anti-eco round, but then two Ukrainian players were downed by the Frenchmen's CZ75s, which ultimately led to Epsilon pulling one back.

Epsilon still managed to take the game to 9-13, and just when many were thinking that a comeback was in the making, HR regained control of the match and took the last three rounds they needed.

HellRaisers beat Epsilon on de_mirage

On de_inferno, Epsilon came out the brighter and won the pistol round after retaking the B site with the bomb planted. HR failed to plant the bomb in the first eco round, but that did not stop them from going for a full buy in the third round, a strategy that bore fruits as they ran riot in A.

HR went on to win two more rounds, but in gun play Epsilon really looked like the stronger side, as Null element's side took four rounds in a row to make it 6-3 in their favour. Null element then won a 1-on-2 situation to put his team back in the race. The Ukrainian team then levelled the match on six rounds, but the final three rounds of the first half went Epsilon's way.

Epsilon managed to pick up where they had left off and added three more rounds to their tally after winning the pistol round thanks to a B rush. The first gun round went to HR, who stopped Epsilon's A split, but that very same strategy proved to be successful during their second attempt.

A double from Null element in the banana and a triple from Null element in the mid section finally broke Epsilon's momentum and allowed HR to get within three rounds of their opponents, but that did little in the way of stopping the Frenchmen, with Null element sealing an empathic 16-11 with a triple kill in B in the last round.

Just another day for shox

Both teams then moved on to de_dust2, and simply no one expected what was about to happen. Richard "shox" Papillon put in a world-class display, getting 30 kills to his name in just 16 rounds as Epsilon ran out 16-0 victors, this way sending HellRaisers home and setting up a final against the winner of the match between LDLC.com and k1ck.

I'm pretty sure if Titan dropped the gaming house and exchanged shox for someone on Titan, they would be able to be top1-top2.

why not top1? for me top1 teams are nip, dig and vp and they are on same step, because like in football (real, barca, bayern, etc) they are all three top1

Let's forget about shox for a moment here and try to take this in rationally. People have been saying for some time now how competitive the GO scene has supposedly become ever since the majors. If a long-standing elite team like Hellraisers can lose sixteen to fucking zero on fucking dust2 on LAN to a team of mixed french leftovers that are considered TOP3 within their national scene, how the fuck can this game not be ridiculously random in terms of competition? This is unthinkable in 1.6 terms. Sure, a player can go insane and carry his team over an arguably stronger team on a map there as well, but an elite experienced team always has something to fall back on, a huge pool of skills and tactics. Not getting a single round on dust freaking 2 would have meant instant disband for a top team in 1.6.

Well, national matchups are always somewhat different and I agree that dust2 offers more potential for lesser known players to shine. But in the end a landslide of these proportions still is indicative of how small the skill sphere is in the game, and how seemingly underdeveloped the strategical part is. If a single player on a good day can make this big of a difference, you have to ask yourself what really matters in the game and how much depth there really is to it.

That is a legendary upset that today has people talking about it. bsl actually hosted the first GO major and that exact match was brought up more than once. Then I don't know how dedicated catch was at the time. Do you think this 16-0 will go down in history as one of the biggest upsets in GO's history? It's just one more to add to the rather rich catalog of questionable results. I admit though that I am overreacting. I mean, just because the competitive toolset is small, does not mean that a team winning does not come down to them being better. Epsilon with shox simply outgunned Hellrasiers here, and while I find that unacceptable to be possible, it still is that Epsilon won because they were better at something. Ultimately, seeing matches being won because players have a good day and shine can also be interesting. We also just had that happen with coL's Hiko and n0thing and it was rather pleasureable to witness.

Naw, actually hellraiser always struggle against weaker teams and play really good against top teams. And Hellraisers don't really have much strats. hltv.org/news/12537-markeloff-we-have-no.. Plus Hellraises' weakest map is dust 2. But 16-0 is really unreal, so is shoxie's 30-3

If it was 16-8 or something I would accept reasonable arguments of that nature. When an elite team with some of the world's best players, that has been together roughly in the same composition for years and consistently competes for the very top spots, does not get a single round on the most standard CS map against lower tier players, something is wrong. Reasonable arguments only go so far.

I don't even have skins that I could bet with. I am honestly just upset with how random the game can still be after two years of competition that for more than half a year now also has teams competing for $250k. Is this game really suited to have teams compete for millions as some people are hoping for? I mean, sure for spectators it might even be nice to witness upsets of these proportions. But for people that ultimately are interested in a highly developed competitive scene, it just hurts to see that this game does seemingly not reward practice and dedication, and has now on multiple occasions seen teams upset with next to no practice, no competitive history as a team or strategical depth. At least there is NiP as the one constant factor. But they just recently finished out of the TOP4 for the first time. If they also are to drop off into the cess pool of randomness that is the TOP10 currently, we are at a point where you can't judge teams anymore but have to look at individual players and matches are decided by how good of a shape a specific player is in on day X.

Wait, shox left Titan to play 7h/day with Epsilon? But very well, I apologize if I somehow made Epsilon look like more of a mixteam than they truly are. But wouldn't you agree that Epsilon is only TOP3 in france after Titan and LDLC, or should be anyway? Let me put it like this. Titan with shox played in a major tournament against Hellraisers for their tournament lives where two-hundred fifty thousand dollars were up for grabs. They were at that time playing 3/4 of a month together in a gaming house, analysing teams and practicing hard. They lost. Now shox wins a BO3 against the same team in a less significant tournament, winning the last map 16-0. This to me suggests the assumption that practice and dedication, the competitiveness of the game in general is not as highly developed. I don't think Epsilon has ever watched a single demo of Hellraisers or studied how they play dust2. They, especially shox, just randomly ran them over. We have seen too many upsets in GO for me not to think the game is very limited in terms of how much better a team can really become. Titan's struggles ever since they went full-time salaried 24/7 practice bootcamp mode is further proof of that. How can a team with some of the best players in the world and arguably one of the most strategically advanced approached courtesy of Ex6TenZ get worse with more practice and better practice conditions?

Titan's downfall is quite simple to explain. Shox had commitment issues ever since they joined the gaming house. He tried to make it work nonetheless, but was unable to. KennyS can't possibly fit Shox's shoes in terms of diversity and skill ceiling, which eventually messed up Titan's play style, which led Ex6tenz to go back to their previous style, back when they were unable to defeat NiP. Only nowadays other teams are a lot better. Living constantly in a gaming house is apparently not a good idea, as it's something you need only a few weeks before a LAN event, not 24/7. At least if all players were living near each other, it could have worked, they could have use it as a kind of "workplace", but the gaming house being in Belgium, it's obviously not the best choice regarding logistics and personal life. They need a serious change if they want to come back on top.

I agree that there are points to be made about what makes Titan struggle. But they recently had an interview done and Richard Lewis asked the same question along the lines of: "As VeryGames, you were constantly competing for TOP1, only really falling short to NiP, then later you even had a period where you overcame NiP and were considered TOP1. Now with Titan, you have everything going your way, why can't you make it work?" - and NBK and Ex6TenZ could not properly answer that question. Again, these things can be broken down like you try to, but taking this situation and the various other indicators, and the big picture looks rather random. Remember when TaZ, NEO, apEX, kennyS and OverDrive beat Na´Vi? The original Na´Vi lineup that dominated in 1.6. Strategical and general game knowledge, experience, gamesense, structure and confidence - all that stuff was still there for the Na´Vi guys, but they were outgunned by the french duo for the most part. People already forgot about that, when at the time it was a big controversial topic questioning the competitive viability of GO as a game. This again just being one of the many hints there have been throughout that lead me to believe in GO, more is decided by individual form and feeling than practice, knowledge and dedication could ever amount to. Then again, there's NiP that have dominated with perfect team play. So I'm not going all out on this theory just yet. Could also be that the scene has not figured out the game just yet and mostly rely on mechanics still, Hellraisers certainly are known to.

Let's think about it in a different way...Two years ago,in football,Bayern beat Barcelona in two matches 7-0.This proves that upsets like this happen in any sport, you're simply overreacting.

Ok let's take this rationally. Please give me facts proving that HR is a "long-standing elite team" in CS:GO? They achieved decent results, that's for sure, but they've never been close to getting even a single international title. Now, as for this match, it was pretty balanced in terms of skill to be honest, however Epsilon being a more recent team (they've been a real team for quite some time now btw), they should have logically lost. But CS, as any sport, often gives us upsets, and this one was certainly a small upset. Are you going to complain about the randomness of the game after every upset? Because if so, you have a lot of work to do. 16-0 is pretty shocking at this level, but sometimes it happens. Shox was in fire, and after 10-0 HR started losing mental strength and concentration, you could see it by making weird decisions and missing shots they shouldn't have. It's totally understandable, especially when you're the favorite team and one player in the other team simply doesn't want to stop hitting HS after HS... And let's not try to pretend that this kind of thing never happened in 1.6 shall we?

We'd have to go into every little detail if we wanted to go down that way of quantifying this "upset". I'm just saying this and many other results serve as indicators for the game not being as allowing for teams to get a competitive edge when things like these can happen. And Hellraisers not being an elite team is a ridiculous notion. If not them, who is?

The teams having achieved great results in international events can be considered elite teams. I don't mind calling HR an elite team if you can tell me what they have achieved to deserve it?

Placing high everywhere they go, being the one team that first overcame NiP and to this day has a positive record against them, having favourable matchups against other elite teams, placing TOP4 and TOP8 both majors, always competing at the top. They may not have won anything really big, but then who has? Would you call fnatic more of an elite team than HR? By your definition, seemingly only NiP are elite. HR very deservingly belongs to the group of elite teams among Na´Vi, VP, NiP, Titan, fnatic, dignitas, coL, etc. And at that point we are starting to argue standings. I am just saying HR is a really strong team that has long-standing competitive history together at the very top of competition, and losing 0-16 against an infinitely less experienced lineup on dust2 is a questionable result to say the least.

Virtus.Pro used to have almost the same line-up as HR, minus Markeloff and plus Fox, Dosia's brother. They were the first team to defeat NiP on LAN, stopping their streak at 87-0-0. During that time the poles were still with Loord and Kuben, and were under the ESC organization.

To me top teams and elite teams don't mean the same thing. An elite team is a strong term which can only be applied to the best of the best. NiP is of course one of these, as for the other ones, it's complicated, because several achieved great results, like Na'Vi and current VP, but the former have to prove themselves in a major, and the latter have shown recent struggles, so I guess Cologne should fix this issue (hopefully). VG/Titan was clearly an elite team before, but they lost a lot of their status in 2014. VP/AD/HR having a positive record against NiP is a myth, a myth I also believed until I actually had a look at their head to head. You're free to check it out in the stats if you don't believe me (don't forget to track all three periods ^^). Even if you take only the HR period, they're not positive, having 2-2 in terms of games, and 4-4 in terms of maps. Note that on LAN it's NiP 1-0 HR (games) and NiP 2-1 HR (maps). The two other periods are clearly in favor of NiP, LAN or on-line. But of course they remain the first team to defeat NiP, but it's not really relevant anymore to the current level of play we have in the scene.

Hellraisers/Astana Dragons is a team that never fulfilled its purpose since the very beginning. I believe that every lineup change they did since they left VP and created AD made them only worse. I obviously can't see into their heads, but something just isn't working in their team and it seems like it's only getting worse. Again I don't want to predict anything but I feel like they are a team close to breaking up completely and therefore I think that team in such a mental state can even lose 16:0 as the final nail in the coffin. But yeah we can only speculate...

Well how often do you see such results for those teams? Very rarely (I havent seen it before). And its precisely corresponds to the chances of such situation happening. I mean its possible to flip the coin on the same side over and over again, its just less likely than all the other outcomes combined. Also - cs:go has very little 'random' elements. Weapon spread is only thing that comes to mind. Everything else is controlled by players.

CS:GO is random and bad game. Maps have 2 many details that are not needed. Flashbangs and smokes suck molotov is still a problem and recoils of the weapons are just jack shit nothing compared to old version of cs wich makes the game even more random. French players have never been good in the competitive cs scene wich the only good cs players to ever come out of france are kabal and msx 2 players over a decade from france. Once again proves that CS:GO is random as fook. Don't get me wrong i don't discard the fact that Epsilon beat HR gratz to them but just goes to show as some one mentioned "random team from france wipes the floor with one of the better teams out there" while the same player wich left titan who practice have a gaming house and what not lost to them in the tournament of their lives... Random is random can't change it valve have the capacity to do so but they won't because dota 2 is just taking over and mobas are the future of online gaming.

+1 If I wanted to watch a random game devoid of skill I would watch the championship of ludo. Stop noobifying CS so amateurs find it enjoyable and can compete with people that have years of experience.

Everyone know that HR plays random, untill i see shox owning NiP, VP, fnatic or Titan i wouldn't say he is that strong. We may see game against a nip where they will not let them room to brethe and shox may show that even he can be hopeless.
