Groups drawn for ESL One Cologne

Groups for the $250,000 event ESL One Cologne have been drawn.

With less than two weeks until the second major of 2014, ESL have drawn the groups for the tournament and the sixteen teams have learned their early fate.

They will battle for the $250,000 prize purse, and it looks like even getting to the playoffs will be a tough task for many of the world's best teams.

The runners-up at the two previous majors, NiP, will be challenged by HellRaisers and Richard "⁠shox⁠" Papillon's Epsilon in group A, while defending champions from Katowice, Virtus.pro, need to make it past fnatic, iBUYPOWER and dAT in group C.

The race for the trophy starts now as teams learn their first opponents in Cologne

Although not yet having officially signed with Cloud9, Spencer "⁠Hiko⁠" Martin & co. have been listed under the new name on ESL's page and they were paired up with dignitas, Titan and Australia's finest, Vox Eminor, in group D.

Natus Vincere, who lost to Norwegians London Conspiracy in the European qualifier, might get a chance at revenge in group C, the one group that features only one top8 finisher from Katowice - LDLC, as LGB disbanded in the meantime.

ESL One Cologne will take place at Gamescom, Cologne, Germany from August 14th-17th and HLTV.org will be on-site to provide you with full coverage.

It's the best group because it's going to have some of the best matches. dAT will have a rough time, but they certainly have the *ability* to upset any of those teams. Wolf we don't really know since we haven't seen them play this competition, but it a much, much smaller chance for them. Epsilon is doing a little better, but they're still the struggle bus team. They lose their first match, and they aren't going to get out of groups. iBP, on the other hand, have the ability to fall to a lower bracket and rally. It's much more of a tossup whether they'll get past groups than Epsilon. HR and fnatic are both good teams to watch. However, NiP being stronger than VP is actually bad for the group, because while VP has a chance of getting knocked out, there is no way NiP is. They're not losing to wolf, and even if HR beats them, they're not losing to epsilon (or wolf again, if they pull of a stunner and beat epsilon). That makes the group more predictable, and less fun to watch.

actually imo, India and Australian team will have no problem in BO1 or BO3 because tbh they are weaker than other three teams of their group. So, not so much surprising for them but it will be very sad for two teams from these 6 (VP, iBP, fnatic, dignitas, c9, titan). Two teams which will not pass from these will be more disappointed with this BO1 system than Wolf and Vox.

Many People keep overlooking VoxE. Keep in mind they ALMOST beat LDLC in Katowice. From the group look though its gonna be though. My tips would be: GA-NiP(Easy)+ HR GB- Navi and LDLC GC- Not sure atm. iBP have beaten VP at esea, but like a lot of people say, was it a fluke? or is the lineup working well? Roughly, I think VP and iBP, but dont expect this to be the right prediction since we don't what fnatic's new lineup can do at lan. GD-Hard one again. But don't underestimate VoxE with jks. VoxE and C9. Like what I said about group C. ANYTHING can happen.

NiP might get surprised keep in mind that their record against hellraisers is not that impressive and they are playing against a player the continuously raped them in the past. LDLC have been giving us strong performances so i will easily go with LDLC + Na'Vi not to ignore cw but they were in a vacation all summer London Conspiracy might surprise. There is no #1 guaranteed in the group of death, All three teams have equal chances to place #1. The question is how will dAT impact the results? Personal opinion: coL and digintas are on the same level the only problem is coL's shroud and digintas semi-long vacation of counterstrike events. I expect titan to pass through this group if not, serious changes are coming to the belgium-french team.

If they were gonna seed a team from the Euro qualifier (Na'Vi) into LGB's old spot why didnt they actually play the qualifer through to a final so they can actually get a winner for the spot. Sure Na'Vi is the highest ranked team from the qualifier but they also came through it by the skin of their teeth. Seems a bit retarded that they get the easier group draw by that metric.
