The friendship argument

Often when talking about potential roster changes in teams, friendship is brought up as one of the main concerns. But should it be?

With Robin "Fifflaren" Johansson being constantly criticized for poor performances, the argument fans often stick to in his defense is that friendship trumps everything in CS:GO, and therefore he's a vital part of NiP.

In this article we consider the importance of friendship in Counter-Strike teams, how it helps or even hurts teams, whether you can improve by removing friends, and the choice it ultimately comes down to.

Continue reading for a more thorough analysis, with examples from my career, both good and bad, and from the careers of NiP's star players Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg and Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund.

Fifflaren remains the most criticized player in CS:GO

Do you need to be friends to be successful?

This is the easiest point to tackle, so we'll start there; do players in Counter-Strike teams have to be friends outside of the game for the team to be successful? To me this causal relationship is clearly flawed as an argument. Players in the real golden five roster - the one featuring Łukasz "LUq" Wnek, Filip "NEO" Kubski, Wiktor "TaZ" Wojtas, Jakub "kuben" Gurczyński and Mariusz "Loord" Cybulski - literally punched each other during some events, yet are one of the most successful lineups of all time.

And although it ultimately led to changes, I too played with team members I didn't always get along with, for example Danny "fRoD" Montaner for my second year in Evil Geniuses. While his initial beef was with Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert in 2009, it gradually changed; during the second year of playing together, he even threatened to punch me during the grand final of ESEA Invite Season 6 Finals -- which we wound up winning. Over the next few days we also beat mousesports, BURNING and H2k, while taking a 16-1 map win versus Na`Vi in an ultimate loss. You don't need to be great friends to put up results.

Me and fRoD were friends prior to those arguments, and we are still friends now. In our case we ignored external issues for too long, and let them affect the entire team. Competition creates arguments as the pressure builds in teams, and sometimes different ways of approaching various situations can result in the same types of clashes. For example, earlier in my career it annoyed me when certain players shrugged off losses like they meant nothing, or chose to prioritize things such as watching the World Cup over preparing for a tournament.

However, my two most successful rosters - the 69N-28E team with me, my brother Niko "naSu" Kovanen, Max "ruuit" Aspe, Juuso "contE" Sajakoski and Joona "natu" Leppänen, and Evil Geniuses with fRoD, n0thing, Tyler "Storm" Wood and Ediz "goodfornothing" Basol - weren't teams built around friendships.

Though we'd have preferred to only have friends, or even just level headed individuals, on the rosters, the limited player pools in Finland and USA respectively stopped us from making changes. Few people know this, but in early 2010 fRoD was actually removed from EG for about a week, because n0thing refused to play with him -- right after we placed fourth at IEM World Championship, and won ESEA Invite Season 5 Finals.

After his removal we brainstormed for a some days but couldn't find a suitable candidate to replace our main AWPer, so we took him back and hoped things would be better. However, that didn't stop us from doing well -- in fact our best run, which included a 3rd place at Arbalet Cup Dallas and a win at MSI Beat It over fnatic, only began after that period.

In real sports the best example of friendship not trumping the game would be the early 2000's Lakers squad where Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal disliked each other so much they literally refused to pass each other the ball in the regular season. They still worked together in the playoffs, and won three championships in a row. It's not the only time either, as Bryant revealed in a recent Sports Illustrated article.

"Bryant sits back, letting the thoughts sit in the air for a moment. Then he continues. “It’s never easy, man. This s--- is hard. So when players look in the distance and see us winning championships and see us celebrating and having a good time, they think, ‘Oh, this is what leadership is, this is how you win, everyone gets along, we’re all buddy-buddy, we all hang out, blah, blah.’ ”

"Bryant shifts in his seat, leans forward. “No it’s not like that. You talk to Lamar [Odom], Adam Morrison. We were at each other’s throats every day. Challenging each other, confronting each other. That’s how it gets done. But that’s hard, because it’s uncomfortable, right? It’s uncomfortable.”

"From Kobe Bryant's Twilight Saga on SI.com"

Friendship is great, and it can help a team, but it's by no means necessary in a competitive setting. It's a luxury that is great to have - and when possible, there's no reason not to go for it - but not everyone can afford it.

natu replaced a closer friend, but made 69N-28E better

How can friendship help teams?

The main thing friendship does for a team, based on my experience, is that if you have fun playing together, you will likely play more, which will lead to better results. Less whining during tournament play will also result in a better mood, and it's likely you might feel less pressure when playing with friends, or that you won't feel as down when losing.

For teams who travel extensively, it also makes the social part a lot more fun. If you have a good friend with you, traveling for twenty-some hours, sitting around at airports and killing extra days in places such as Hangzhou or Paris, won't all seem so bad. It's obvious that actually playing the matches is a miniscule part of each trip abroad for a tournament, and therefore having people you enjoy socializing with in your team will certainly make the experience of traveling a lot more fun.

Friendship can also lead to better team play, and generally trusting your teammates more in-game. You might feel more inclined to run into sites first as bait if you trust your friend to pick up the trade right after, and you won't mind taking on 'annoying' roles in strategies as much if you're at least in good company.

Is this enough to win games, though? I don't think so. Friendship can help teams who already have everything else, but friendship alone does not contain any superpowers that get instilled in teams and helps them perform above their capabilities. It's still the Counter-Strike skills on the server that decide the winners.

GeT_RiGhT wasn't a great fit socially early on in his career

Can friendship be detrimental to a team?

Based on my experience, I believe friendship can not only be helpful, but also detrimental to a team. Going as far back as my first competitive team wings, which then became Serious Gaming, we were a team made out of six friends, all of whom remain good friends to this day. After a period of nearly two years, people clearly grew complacent with how things were going, weren't ready to push each other and force others to try to improve, and no one wanted to complain about their friends.

It's understandable that you may not want to tell your good friend he isn't playing enough or that you believe he needs to put in some extra time on the CSDM server to sharpen up his aim. In situations similar to this, it can actually be detrimental to have good friends on the team. You don't want to complain about your friend, and you certainly don't want to remove him.

Another example from my career would be the removal of Toni "toNppa" Luhtapuro from 69N-28E in early 2007. I didn't want to remove him, though he was clearly the weakest player on our roster -- because he'd been playing with me for over a year, lived near me and was a good friend. However, contE forced our hand with the roster change, and it instantly made us better -- in fact, we peaked that spring and early summer with Duncan "Thorin" Shields considering us the world's best team at one point.

fnatic's 2007-2008 roster is also a good example. Carried by f0rest, that roster became the world's best overall in 2007 by being super consistent and winning enough medium-sized events, and continued winning tournaments in 2008, though by then they had grown much less consistent. That team was by all accounts a team composed of good friends, but in the end it was also a team in need of a change, and in all likelihood it was the friendships that held back the changes for as long as they did.

contE was the catalyst  behind most roster changes in Finland

Can you remove friends and become more successful?

Aside from my own experience with replacing toNppa with natu and becoming more successful, a good example is the above mentioned fnatic team of 2007-2008. The team stuck with Oscar "Archi" Torgersen and Oskar "ins" Holm until the beginning of 2009, but they then added two youngsters, one of them considered socially awkward after his SK Gaming exit, and started one of the most dominant runs of all time in Counter-Strike.

In came GeT_RiGhT and Rasmus "Gux" Ståhl, and fnatic 2009 was born. Together the team ran through most of that year's events undefeated, and had probably the most dominant year by that point, topping all records for prize money. fnatic replaced good friends with more talented and hungry younger players, and it instantly paid dividends.

A few more recent examples also include both NiP stars. In early 2010 fnatic recruited Björn "THREAT" Pers - a good social fit to the team - to replace Gux. After less than satisfactory results for six months, the team undid the change, and became more successful again. At the end of that year more changes ensued, as fnatic were seemingly split into two camps with f0rest and GeT_RiGhT wanting to get rid of Harley "dsn" Örwall, while in-game leader and captain Patrik "cArn" Sättermon stuck by his long-time teammate's side.

Ultimately the now-NiP duo left fnatic to join SK Gaming, and while fnatic struggled throughout 2011 up until recruiting Gux and Michael "Friis" Jørgensen, SK Gaming did not. In SK f0rest and GeT_RiGhT teamed up with some very good players - such as Marcus "Delpan" Larsson, who has admitted to being a lousy teammate, showing up late to practice, if at all - and came within two rounds of being the best team of that year.

Now the worst argument I hear as counter to the friends versus talent lineup is that replacing an average skilled friend with a skilled douchebag won't work, often citing some team who has seemingly done that and failed. But why does the person you recruit have to be a douchebag for him to be more skilled? Why can't you add another good guy, such as natu in 69N-28E's case, who happens to fit the team as well?

Surely it won't help any team to add a super toxic player in the player's shoes who acts like the glue in the team. That's obvious. But you can replace a good guy, and even the glue, with another decent guy. There's no reason to assume no other good players exist, especially when considering the huge player pool of Sweden, in NiP's case.

Gux might not have been as good of a guy as Archi, but he made fnatic better

What about NiP?

As we started this piece off with mentioning Fifflaren and NiP; how does this all tie back into NiP? Well, first of all, their star players f0rest and GeT_RiGhT have a history of making roster changes at the cost of friendship whenever they stopped winning. That time is not now, as NiP remain the world's best, but don't fool yourself into thinking they would simply allow themselves to go out of contention for the world best spot if their levels dropped off enough that the current roster simply wouldn't cut it.

It's always surprised me how GeT_RiGhT can be so accepting of his teammates. He is probably the hardest working Counter-Strike player alive, despite being the best. In sports, super competitive and hard-working players such as Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan were frustrated if they felt their teammates weren't putting in enough work. So how does GeT_RiGhT avoid that feeling?

Here is a guy who has been considered the best player in the world for nearly two years now, with a teammate who has only regressed in that same time period. Usually playing full-time on a real salary with better players, and against top level competition, helps you improve. However, if you've watched Fifflaren play extensively, or looked at his stats, you can see that he has actually worsened.

By all accounts in 2012 he was a valuable part of NiP's success and even contributed in the fragging department. From there on out it's been downhill, an evolution to which we see no end. His highest rating in an international tournament in 2014 is 0.96, and three out of eight times he has finished with a rating of sub-0.74.

To me it seems Fifflaren has a good mind for Counter-Strike, and with his extensive knowledge of NiP and its personnel, he could probably become the best coach there is in Counter-Strike. He could remain a part of the team in a supportive role, similar to Jonatan "Devilwalk" Lundberg in fnatic, and continue contributing with his intangibles while making room for a more skilled player.

One of the arguments against this is that f0rest would retire if Fifflaren quit. Considering him saying in an interview a few years ago that he hadn't graduated upper secondary school (i.e. high school) and he clearly enjoys the gamer life, it's hard to imagine that happening. Especially if Fifflaren stayed on as a coach -- a role he would seem like a great fit for, having been with NiP since the get-go and contributed in the strategical department.

It may not be worth taking a chance on a new player yet, as NiP still remain the world's best. However, their round record at ESL One Cologne was negative - 144 rounds won to 147 lost - which shows how unsustainable their current play is. If they drop out of contention for world's best, taking a chance on change wouldn't be impossible.

All this being said, I fully understand why they won't do it until they absolutely have to. But you're fooling yourself if you think no one in NiP would have thought about it, had they crashed out in the group stage, or the quarter-finals of ESL One Cologne.

NiP's winning formula doesn't seem sustainable

Friendship versus winning

Needless to say, it's not all so black and white. There's a case to be made for having fun, and there's definitely tons of people who would rather be top five in the world with good friends, than the world's best if that meant playing with people they didn't enjoy playing with. There's nothing wrong with that -- and that's important to remember. If a team decides that them sticking together is more important than the potential upside of better results, that's fine.

Not everyone is as competitive of Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan, but for the hardest working players competitiveness is  usually a strong trait. It's not easy putting in tons of work only to see your teammates slacking and having a good time, or even putting in tons of work only to think you as a team could be better with a different player. What it really comes down to - and this is the case for new players starting teams as well - is that you need five players who have a similar mindset, similar motivations and similar goals for the team.

A team won't be successful in the long run if players on it want different things. If two players want to play day and night to win, and three others would prefer to take it easy and see how far talent takes them, it's bound to end badly once you give that combination enough time. It's not easy to find five people who are on the same page, and if you do, it just might be worth keeping them. Unless you want to win at any cost.

Some prefer putting up with difficult personalities if it helps them win

This was just a brief look at the different factors surrounding friendship in competitive Counter-Strike teams. It doesn't cover everything, and there are no absolute or correct answers.

This article would have held a lot more validity before ems but it shall only serve as a reminder once NiP starts to fail which they shall. People will then raise the friendship argument which this article shall counter. The only thing i can say it this article is a little too late/Premature.

It is both: 1. Since Nip won EMS therefore it is too late. It should have been released when they were struggling. 2. It is premature since in future we see them failing. Hope this clears it. Or else consider me retarded.

There are also 3 times more bad people on this site than decent, let alone good. A lot of bad players actually believe Fifflaren is a good player (relatively seen), which is just a huge joke.

how can a bad player like you judge on his aim/movements. its hard to aim when your role is to eat all the flashes in order to other mates to just come and kill. its the same as ceh9 and loord/kuben in 1.6

I'm actually pretty decent. Apart from that, your argument has no grounds as Fifflaren also has a hugely hard time killing people, that are not flashing him, nor are looking at him. He hardly frags at all (also as a ct and he gets easy angles on t), and the frags that he does get are mostly anti-eco frags. It's not hard to aim while you're holding an easy angle and somebody walks into your crosshair. For Fifflaren it for some reason is.

90% of HLTV users have said in past six months at least once "-fifflaren +xxxx" or havent expressed their mind, but still think so. People just defend Fifflaren in this thread, because they cannot agree with Lurppis. What Lurppis said is absolutely 100% true and time will show that. This article, by the way, is logically sound, there is no arguing. Its not hate to speak up the truth. That same truth can be seen every month in cs:go when teams change rosters, mostly for better. Fanatic being the latest example.

They're not the only people capable of analysing professional counter-strike and just because they're considered the two most knowledgable - or atleast the two most well-known - 'cs analysts' doesn't mean every one of their opinions on CS is to be taken as gospel. Also you are pulling percentages out of your arsehole in an attempt to try and justify your silly little statement. Infact, 99% of posters think Fifflaren is a Counter-strike god who is the secret to NiP's success due to him being genetically modified from the genes of Fatal1ty, potti and SpawN (hence his swag) - see what I did there? "...10% defend fifflaren and those are reddits kids and idiots who say can you help to become Global I'm DMG" That's borderline unintelligible.

I'm not making fun of his grammar though. I didn't insult him or say his English was bad either. I just pointed out that I couldn't fully understand what he was trying to say at the end of his post and so I couldn't respond properly to his well-structured, logical and astutely observed argument. He could be drunk for all I know.

Most pro players that you talk to would echo the same things Lurppis is saying. Really only the noobs, which there are A LOT of here on Hltv and especially reddit, are the ones who disagree. It's funny too because I haven't seen a single person who disagrees with Lurppis' analysis actually come up with anything that's even remotely rational to back up their opinion.

Oh so you spoken to all the pro players and drawn up a pie chart on those who think fifflaren is shit at csgo? Lol fuck off you cretin. To be fair, I don't think your opinion matters on the people who disagree with lurpiss as you use the word 'noob' without any irony. I've been playing cs for 11 years, and know many others who have been playing for a similar amount of time who would also disagree with lurpiss' viewpoint. I'm not surprised that you haven't seen a rational response to lurpiss' obbsessive ranting on fifflaren as I don't believe you have the capacity to read, let alone comprehend, the varying counter arguments found in this thread alone.

You can play CS for 11 years and still be awful. The fact you think tenure means anything makes me think you probably are just another mindless noob. Ask anyone who's good, if you have their contact. Everyone I talked to thought that Fifflaren was bad. Steel refused to comment on him while shoutcasting for ESL Cologne, because he knew he'd be flamed by the noobs (i.e. you). VP were laughing at Fifflaren in Katowice. Lurppis mentions that the pro scene agrees with him. What reason would the pro scene have to come out in public to support Lurppis anyway? All they'd do is piss NiP off and make themselves look bad after losing to them.

It would take too much time to deconstruct the dribble you have typed here and point out the multiple reasons why your 'argument' (it's barely an argument) is weak at best. So I'll leave you with a line that's on your level: lol fifflaren is no noob, ur a noob, noob.

yeh.. lurppis is right. but at the same time they just won their first major, so it seems kind of pointless even talking about it. they are still capable of beating any top team on LAN 4v5. why not have a good time and win with your friends? lurppis wasting his time defending his tweets after the backfire, but it resulted in an interesting article anyway. i cant complain, i enjoyed it. a better argument to replacing fiff would be the value they lost in losing some of the small tournaments before ESL that they could have won with a more powerful lineup. but at the same time, it was GTR performing poorly then. maybe GTR and the others dont feel confident in replacing fiff when they know that they themselves aren't performing at a top level? maybe after a bad run of losing when it isn't GTRs fault will give them the motivation to change the lineup

Just giving example of teams that worked well putting the 'friend things apart' and kicking some players and he concluded by saying a change would do no harm to NiP, and Fifflaren would be a great fit as a coach for what he brings to the team and his tactical mind.

O´really? I think Lurppis´ articles about tournament formats, etc are pretty much only articles that I read. Rest are just cover of "what happened". If he wants to take a stand (like 90% of people here does), he is free to do so. Here he backed up his opinions with facts, logic and history. Maybe we dont agree, but no need to read if not interested.

Dude, Im like a granpa in here :) I just liked his articles, even thou I dont agree on everything. He brings valid points to the table, gives ideas and ways to interpret/analyse different aspects. I dont honestly read any other than Lurppis´ articles, not because being fan-boy but most articles are rather news of what has happened or interviews (nothing wrong with those, just not interested of them). Love Thorin as well. I think he is complicated personality as is Lurppis. Do I agree all the time? Def. no, but they do analyse well and provide robust arguments. I love that, it makes me think and want to de-bunk them if possible.

So fucking true. He is such an immature little child that he dedicates himself to simply protecting his ego, and try to prove himself right. Thus he writes a fucking huge article solely to defend his fucking tweets, because if the backlash he got from it. He doesn't really care about fifflaren, he cares about feeling important and making sure people think he is right.

"It's always surprised me how Alesund can be so accepting of his teammates. He is probably the hardest working Counter-Strike player alive, despite being the best. In sports, super competitive and hard-working players such as Kobe Bryant and MICHAEL JACKSON were frustrated if they felt their teammates weren't putting in enough work. So how does Alesund avoid that feeling?" When did Michael Jackson start playing csgo?

Fifflaren has and will always be a WEAKLINK in nip, you are in denial and ignorant if you cannot accept that. This article is about how NiP can use fifflaren better to their strengths in other areas like coaching. It seems so wrong to see such a huge discrepancy in skill in the best team in the world.

So if they replaced fifflaren they would have won $20k more? im not sure its that easy.. its about the overall dynamic of the team etc.. but hey maybe NiP should try the old Astana Dragons lineup with 5 mad fraggers that worked out well!

I think the 'ole 5 mad fragger thing worked out pretty well for dignitas, VP, fnatic. The weakest fraggers on those three teams (pronax, FeTiSh) are still better than Fifflaren and also serve the IGL role. At least try to use your brain and think of a counter-example before posting nonsense.

It isn't. Such critics only make the community beter and more consolidated. Such arguments help the community evolve. And any sane man can see the reason behind his arguments. All he must do is just state his argument rather than constantly reiterating it. Frankly, his twitter is his personal space for people who want to know his personal opinion. NO point of citing his status. He can say anything on his twitter.

No, I can't, as that is a whole different category of stupid. I doubt Lurpiss believes Fifflaren is a bad CS:GO player, instead that he is just not up to par with the level of skill found in the rest of the team. You on the other hand thinking that Fifflaren is a 'bad csgo player' and thus 'bad at playin cs:go' is a very embarrassing opinion.

"instead that he is just not up to par with the level of skill found in the rest of the team" his not up to par with the level of skill found in the top 3-4 teams at the very least and its just a joke to see his level of skill in the world best csgo team. He may not be a bad csgo player but he very well is a liability in a team that looks to maintain world no.1 spot

And yet they're number #1 in the world and have been for most of CS:GO's competitive existence. Fifflaren is a good competitive counter-strike player playing alongside arguably the best competitive counter-strike players of all time. The result of this is that some, mostly the reactionary and the childish, deem him a bad csgo player when in reality, it's more complex than that, to the point where I can't be arsed in explaining why there will always be a weak-link in a teambased game that also requires superb individual skill in competitive play. To finish, if he's a liability, he's probably the most desirable liability in the history of competitive counter-strike and it's obvious why. I think I'll leave it here as we appear to think very differently on this matter, so I'll just agree to disagree.

Hop on guys, there's room for everyone! lurppis@lurppis_ · 3. aug. .@Biathlo @alluCSGO doesn't have mad swedish skills - he speaks a little - but he'll learn swedish faster than fifflaren learns csgo twitter.com/lurppis_/status/495908091091..

Lurppis, I think you may need to hire an editor or better review your features before you post them. Your grammar, or lack of, is distracting. Grammatical errors or poor syntax is typically understandable in a news piece when you're perhaps trying to break a story or get the information out as fast as you've received it or even perhaps when you're communicating with your readers in the comments section but for a feature like this, it's unacceptable, unprofessional and most importantly, difficult to read. Run on sentences, misplaced commas in some places, missing commas in others and your syntax is a mess. It's difficult to read and I find myself going back line-by-line to edit as I read. Not to mention there's just some things you say that don't come across too well. For example, "In real sports the best example of friendship not ..." implies that Counter-Strike, or the larger competitive gaming, is "fake" sports, if not at least illegitimate by comparison.

I often wonder how long it takes you to proof read your comments prior to pressing, 'post'? I suspect it would prove most problematic had you done so only to find you had included an error yourself :)

Had it been the only one posted, then sure. However, since it comes after a shit load of similar nonsense, it comes across as just another excuse to use HLTV as a forum for his own (unwanted) opinions that have so far been ignored. Fuck if I was a pro team manager I would be inclined to do everything I could just to avoid making any decision that might somehow suggest that the shit Lurpiss, (or indeed any other troll) posted, might one day be considered to have had an actual impact upon my decision making process. Fuck that!

I dont understand why people criticize Fifflaren so much? Every player have ups and downs when it comes to in game performance, but if you criticize him so much, its gonna get even worse for him,and its gonna be much harder to get back on the track. Just put yourselves in his position and you will stop criticize him. :) Btw friendship inside the team its allways better than "just business",cause you will allways support your friend to become better for himself and for the team. :)

How is this article not well-written? It touches on a subject that gets a lot of attention, constantly. If only people in this comment section would actually talk about the issues raised, instead of just attacking the writer, we could have some really nice conversations, but I guess it is too much to ask of this community..

I think Fifflaren is the perfect example. lurppis is not saying that NiP should change him, but that it will likely be inevitable, if they crash out of the next major, which I agree with. So far the results says that Fifflaren should not be changed, but when/if that changes, he needs to take on another role, perhaps as coach. He is the obvious contradiction to what lurppis thinks, but I doubt even NiP would put friendship over results.

But In whole article it was worth watching that K/D ratio off Only Fiffy was Mentioned and Article other Examples were great and Topic is also great and even I think Nip Need Changes because They miss Awp Player but they are winning and we should not judge player by K/D ration. Its Team chemistry and If they feel Xizt Doesn't fit then they can Replace Him Also Why to point Fiffy alwz.

I have to admit, he could have used other examples, besides Fifflaren - threat comes to mind, though he was ingame leader. Fifflaren is just used so often, because you see very few other topteams winning, with a player that underperforms so much fragwise.

Nice article lurppis. I don't see the point of removing fiffy as long as they are winning but once that changes it is inevitable.

We got your point but its also not good to criticism fiffy again and again because for a team winning formula is everything and if they will add a star doesn't mean they will dominate the world and they are no. 1 team for quit a while so no need to blame some1 regularly and if they start losing then they have to think what is wrong and what needs to change and I am sure every team will so stop targeting same person from worlds best team. Thanks

well this is getting kinda ridiculous.. a news article ain't supposed to be based on a "reporters" opinion.. that's something u learn on elementary school. and even the trolls and retards on this website can see clearly how this in not "news" but an opinion and a rant towards someone u clearly don't like. get something decent to write about, u have knowledge on the game, use it.. don't bash a team that even playing badly wins a *ucking major

However, if you've watched Johansson play extensively, or looked at his stats, you can see that he has actually worsened. Has he really? Or has the competition caught up to him? With Robin "Fifflaren" Johansson being constantly criticized for poor performances, the argument fans often stick to in his defense is that friendship trumps everything in CS:GO, and therefore he's a vital part of NiP. NiP isn't only about friendship. It's about the stability of the lineup and what happens when you play together as a team as long as they have. Yes, in theory NiP could be better on paper, if they added another godlike aimer to play Fifflaren's role, but at the same time it would probably shatter their group-dynamic. It would take months for them to take in a replacement, such as Delpan, adjust their playstyle, and the result could very well be even worse than what we have seen as of late. The real question is, is it worth the risk? They're still quite capable of performing, but phasing out Fifflaren for a new guy (and I don't have the slightest who that could even be), might very well spell the end of NiP. Not because he's the magical glue holding together the team, but because they would have to accommodate the new guy to all their strats, and rebuild the trust and cohesion from ground up. This, coupled with the risk of bringing in a player who might not suit the rest of the group very well, could easily lead to drama that could cause even more changes in the lineup, effectively ending NiP.

Fifflaren stepping into a coach role would be the best thing for NiP, at least I believe so. The best example of this working is fnatic and they even added two new members. If Fifflaren is on the sideline, while a better aimer, with just as good gamesense, is playing, I think NiP could return to dominance. I do not see why Fifflaren HAS to be in the lineup for the group dynamic to work, if they find a new fith player, who is not a complete idiot. Fifflaren can bring just as much to the table by being a friend and motivator on the sideline. I think we agree somewhat, but I just wanted to reply, since it was the first post in this article I saw that actually had some substance to it :)

It would take months to take in a replacement and adjust to their playstyle you say? Like when fnatic cut MODDI (their best fragger) a WEEK before the first $250,000 tournament, and WON? Not only did they cut their best fragger, but they brought in a new IGL (pronax), a WEEK BEFORE Dreamhack Winter. And they won. Do you realize how dumb your argument is? Titan was the second most stable roster in CSGO, and they ended up breaking apart. The G5 had been together for years before CSGO, but even they ended up breaking apart. You really don't have a clue what makes a good counter-strike team. You talk about trust and cohesion needed in a team, but that shit doesn't take years to build. NiP could replace Fifflaren right now and become immediately better in two weeks, tops. His role in the team is easily the most replaceable/upgradeable.

I spoke of NiP specificly when wrote that, and I stand by it. Fnatic's DHW-lineup isn't a very fair comparison to make, since that lineup ended up sucking pretty bad on the long run, and I believe most analysts agreed on the fact that at DHW, largest role in fnatic's victory was the surprise factor. No one were sure on how they were going to play. When you play for years with someone, for example f0rest and GTR, you 'learn' how the other will play, and you will adjust to it to supplement his way of play/he will supplement yours, and you will pretty much know how the other guy will play. I don't know what CS you've been watching, but this plays a large factor in how NiP plays, as a team, and they're the best at it. If you think a good Counter-Strike team is one who can just dominate aimduels, just look at HellRaisers. NiP could replace Fifflaren right now and become immediately better in two weeks, tops. Who would they bring to replace Fifflaren? Why would they? Who is this godlike of a player that the other four NiP players would like in the roster, and will do Fifflaren's role, can frag against top-tier teams NiP plays (such as VP, Na`Vi, new fnatic, c9, dignitas etc.), will also perform on stage, and be a good match IRL and ingame? Yes, Fifflaren is replaceable, but doing so could easily end up hurting the rest of the team a lot more than they would gain from doing so. And to build the level of communication, cohesion, trust and teamwork NiP have, it could take much longer than two weeks for the new guy to step in Fiffy's shoes.

I think fnatic had ridiculously good chemistry right off the bat with pronax. I'd say the same thing when they picked up olofmeister and krimz. When VG replaced kennyS with shoxie, they didn't skip a beat. Dignitas' roster has gone through lots of changes over the past year, and they've actually gotten better. VP replaced two players they had played with for years and are better for it. HellRaisers didn't work out because of ego and bad leadership, not because there were "too many fraggers", as if that's actually a thing. iBP is a team full of 5 fraggers who won ESEA lan. VP has 5 players who can each dominate a game. Same could be said of fnatic, dignitas and old VG if you gave their IGL's a pass. If you ranked the players of VP, NiP, fnatic and dignitas, f0rest and GTR would be #1 and #2. Xizt would be top 10, maybe top 5. Friberg would be top 15. Fifflaren would be dead last. The reason they still manage to win is because they're top heavy, not because Fifflaren provides some mystical intangibles that no one can seem to comprehend. As to who could replace Fifflaren, there are loads of players in the pro Swedish scene who could replace him. NiP could probably swipe anyone off fnatic if they tried, seeing as how HeatoN lets his players keep 100% of their tournament earnings on top of their salary.

It really doesn't matter. They choose to do it their way. only way i see a line up change in NiP is if one of them retires. Also I respect that they do it their way, despite all the kids calling for fifflaren to be kicked.

Article was actually very nice and I agree that if they start losing consistently then changing fifflaren would be the most logical option. But I really like fifflaren and always root for him and actually after the major win I think that he looks more confident in himself and performs better. But if the roster change happens I believe fifflaren still will be part of the NiP in some form, be that coach or something else. fiffy is love, fiffy is life <3

good read got to love all the kids who rage now and probably didn't even read the article. it's not even just about fifflaren.. but regarding the "why is this fifflaren-thing still a legit topic?" question: because it's a shame for the name of competitive CS that a team can dominate so hard although it clearly plays with only 4 top players. it just makes everyone else look silly. and don't give me that bullshit about different roles and stuff cause even a blind man can see that there's no role in which Fifflaren is at the level his team is playing at (no he's NOT a good "support" player and just carrying the bomb is not a role). if the FC Bayern München had a defender who under-performs in 99% of all his matches, but the team would still win almost everything, this player would still lose his contract. this is a professional competition and it's all about being as strong as possible. it would make the entire sport a joke if he would keep playing for the team simply because the other players are good friends of him. off-topic: I miss trace and friis :( trace had such a unique playing-style. He gave up on GO way too early. I'm damn sure that if he had put some more work into GO he would have become an outstanding player again.

The problem with lurppis is sometimes (even though i enjoy reading from him) manipulates facts to his favor. Everyone who remembers the 1.6 era knows that problems started among the golden five started after their losing streak then they cut LUq for pasha. He can't use the EG example as they are not even close to NiP's level, EG back then were considered 2nd/3rd tire team.

I do think friendship, or at least a good spirit is important. Playing with people that you dont like (whether that is in RL or in game), is counterproductive, no matter how good the player is. I have played with people that are a lot better than me, but in terms of spirit are just not the kind of people I like (lots of whining, raging and complaining). What happened was that the communication didnt work, everyone was demotivated and everyones performance just slumped.

Process of teamwork by Tuckman’s theory – Forming – This is the first stage and this stage is about to build a team. The individual behavior is driven by a desire to be accepted to a new group. This stage is usually without any conflicts and all group members are working on a basic things in a group – where and when they are going to meet, who does what. Storming – In this stage, all group members developed between other team member’s trust and they start to feel comfortable. What is more, they start to challenge others’ opinions. This stage can be contentious, unpleasant or even painful to members of the team who are averse to conflict. Tolerance of each team member and their differences should be emphasized. Norming – The team manages to have one goal. Some team members will give up their personal ideas and agree with others to make their team work. The danger in this stage is that some members can be so focused to prevent conflicts that they are not sharing their own ideas. Performing – Not all teams are going that far. But some teams are reaching performing stage and it means that now they can function as a high-performing team and they find ways to get the job done smoothly and effectively without conflicts or external supervision. That's the secret. You do not have to be a good friends or something, you have to be motivated equally, know your aim and goals. But, you can't be like, u see each other outside and you are like "i don't want to see/know you"

Yeah, thought the same. This article mostly lists a few examples that show that this topic has no point to be investigated. It involves relationship alchemy and then is different for every people. In short, this article shows that no article on this question should be done? But maybe we needed an article to prove that avoid to make more? =D

I'm actually enjoying this drama nowadays. lurppis vs fifflaren fangirls. Nomad can we get a separate forum section for this stuff? I'd really want to see some users here vs lurppis in a some sort of ring/arena. The requirements would be 20+ comments against lurppis to get in a ring(the new forum section) with him.

'There's definitely tons of people who would rather be top five in the world with good friends, than the world's best if that meant playing with people they didn't enjoy playing with.' -> this is well said. I don't think they are hungry enough to keep their number1 spot, and if (or when) the fall comes i'd love to hear something like this from them: 'guys we had a great run but it's time to find another job, we'll still be able to play in online leagues and sometimes lans too and we'll always have our fans and blahblahblah' But ofc i wish that day never comes :)

Are you sad over fiffy because you know the feeling of being the "5th wheel" Lurppis? You can make a blog about how much you dislike fiffy. This is just sad and embarrassing to read, didn't even read through because i knew were this was going. I don't even understand how hltv are letting you have it in the frontpage as "news", this is just you trying to tell everyone how bad fiffy is and is just a standard blog nothing els. If you have to write blogs, make a own site "howtobashfiffy.com/iliketowastemytime.com" or use the blog section here at hltv.org or just for your own sake; stop it and grow up.

You are border line bullying the guy, HLTV should seriously consider removing you because you are blinded by hatred. You lack so much professionalism it's unreal. I cannot stand listening to you on streams any more. I think you are a mean little man and all you seem to do is chat shit about someone. Yes, the point you are trying to make with this article could be a valid point but we all know the reason you wrote it and some of your comments on twitter etc towards Fifflaren are just harsh. Dear Lurppis, every decision we make, every response we say is a consequences from our past. For example: A person divided his life to a 51% time in baseball and 49% in fotball. That person even tho he's not aware of it, will eventualy say that baseball was/is better. This is what you're doing now. The fact that you may stayed with your friends for a time, but threw(or left) them away after a while makes you write this kind of b.s. and inpires others to do the same. Not to mention it looks like you have somethin` personal against Fifflaren. THE real fact is that true friends who see others so devoted to somethin` (cs) while they are not at the same level, will eventualy start dedicating themselfs more or eventualy step down and not try to bring maybe some bright futures down with him/them. THIS is what friendship means, the pact and decisions you'll live the rest of your life with. P.S. In a team where 5 are good friends, logic doesn't apply, it's somethin` else witch you can't understand considering you haven't experienced yet and probably never will. I`ll give you sometin to think about tho: Throwing your mate out to get another, then meeting him at a lan where your consciousness will start taking over, feeling bad and eventualy leading up to a very bad performance. Gaming is a part of your life witch eventualy you'll leave for somethin` else, a family, a girlfriend, a good job. As you grow in age you`ll realize that the decisions you made makes you a champion. Untill then, i suggest you never write about these things again, go out, drink a beer with strangers and tell me if that felt better then an evening where you lost a game but you were with your friends. Appologize for my enlgish if i made some mistakes, but noones perfect.

Good article, but it is a shame that again it was Fifflaren who was the main argument in your publicity. It is getting kinda boring. To be fair, you obviously have a point about friendship, Fifflaren and all of that, but was this article really focused on today's issues around our CS:GO scene? All of this what you wrote was something that most of the people already knew, it wasn't anything new. I think there are much more interesting topics you could write article about. But anyway, good job.

tl;dr really being consistent in how you are working the map, even when losing, is key. It takes friends of a pretty high caliber to be able to lose huge games, games that you should have won and look at it as one game, one finals, 9-44 and then be a champion.

The problem with statistics is that they lack context. Sometimes 'when' is more important than 'how many' If Fiffy clutches the round and the game in a 1v3 are you really gonna care that his overall k/d for the match was negative? Friendship is a bonus but mutual respect is more important. Team mates punching each other shows they don't respect one another and it's human nature to ignore or dismiss those you don't respect.

Lurppis, you are an egotistical, self absorbed person. You are seeminglessly carrying on this debate on fifflaren to prove a point. The fact though is that you are not part of NiP, therefore you do not know what goes into the dynamics of the team. You can only speculate and put down facts from yester years teams. You are acting as if the game should revolve around your opinion when you can only hope to achieve what they have.

Lurppis has a good idea for an article here but then he goes on to talk about this already so much discussed issue with NiP and Fifflaren. I mean come on, half of this article is dedicated to talk about whether or not Fifflaren should be kicked. Get over it already. Otherwise it's a good read.

Kovanen analysis has major flaws. The article is written in such an odd angle. The perspective come as of he was one of the players in the NiP roster. Knowing them on a personal level as of he had internal knowledge for years. Benchmarking by comparing his teams to other individual players is naive without any doubt. Besides the sloppy writing it seems like he didnt put in enough effort to support any other perspective. The intention of the article is of course to deviate. Yet Im not suprised, as Kovanen holds grudges recklessly.

NiP could very well perform better with another play then Fifflaren, but what is really pathetic is how lurrpis call himself an "esport journalist" the only thing he write about nowadays is Fifflaren. What have he done to you? It is so obvious he have personal problems with Fiffy, don't even try to hide it.

"lurrpis call himself an "esport journalist"" IIRC lurppis has said he doesn't want to be called a journalist. "the only thing he write about nowadays is Fifflaren." That is simply not true, and you should know it. "What have he done to you? It is so obvious he have personal problems with Fiffy, don't even try to hide it." I'm sure Fifflaren has done nothing to lurppis. Perhaps it's just that he finds it very strange how NiP, arguably the best team in the world, can have a player who does not perform even nearly as well as the rest of the team. Why would he have anything personal against him? Doesn't that seem kind of illogical? I think lurppis has said more than once that fif is one of his favorite casters and just like he wrote in this article, which judging by your nonsensical comment you didn't even read, he thinks fif'd be a splendid coach for NiP, since he knows the team so well. I think at this point it should seem quite clear that lurppis' problem is fif's performance in game and not some personal one, contrary to what most here seem to spout without thinking even once before posting. Perhaps this shouldn't be a news artice, but rather a blog, but I think that's the case with everything lurppis has written. Of course it's only now that people point that out

People take this way too personally. Stars do get criticized all the time, when they perform badly even more. He doesnt think Fifflaren is worth NIP, and so do large portion of scene. Its quite easy to criticize him as he has by far the worst stats. To top that, he hasnt been able to show what is his role. Only to add the pressure, other teams are caught up NIP and probably even surpassed them in some aspects. Then is inevitable that weakest link gets replaced. I gotto love when NIP starts losing and then everything Lurppis has said comes true. If NIP fall out of top3, he will "retire due personal reason, not having enough time to dedicate to this game. He wished the best for the team and relishes the moments he had for many years".

When reporting/journalism/analyzing, whatever Lurpis claims to be becomes purely critical of an individual, it is no longer Journalism or reporting, it is simply bullying. This is not an article about friendship this is just another long drawn out article bashing fifflaren because for whatever reason Lurpis has a personal problem with him. I'd like to see Lurpis join NiP and outfrag, f0rest, GeT_RiGhT, Xizt and Friberg on a consistent basis. The belief that fifflaren should be doing this is stupid, no player throughout GeT_RiGhT and f0rest's careers has consistently been anywhere other than 3rd or below in their team, why should any different be expected of fifflaren? Who it's worth mentioning has had far far far more success than Lurpis ever has.

He should just leafe Robin alone... I realy feel sorry for him getting hate from everyone must suck so hard. I bet Lurrpiss would have already quit if Fifflaren would wirte all these "articels" about him.

You miss the point entirely NiP aren't trying to create the best team in the world. They are trying to prove they are the best team in the world. It's a subtle difference that you are unable to understand because thats not how your teams played. Those 5 players were the best and they want to prove to everyone and themselves that they are still #1 If they replaced 1 or 2 of their players for players that are better it would make their entire struggle back to the top meaningless. And until they decide otherwise that is entirely their choice.

yeah, right. And maybe even kicking Fifflaren for eg Pyth or someone would make them better for some weeks. But look at fnatic and look at VP, they owned NiP so hard, but only one time... If NiP changed a player they could be better but only in 1/1000 cases they will be only near as consitent as they are now. <3 to Fiffy

Can friendship be detrimental to a team? Here you basically said that they wouldn't tell each other to practise more in order not to hurt their feelings. Good friends can critize each other without worrying about that, Fiffleren said that too in an interview. Now I don't want to be offensive, but if the best team in the world thinks that friendship brought them were they are, who are you to deny that? Being this article written by Lurrpis, sounds ridiculous considering it objective. Sorry for bad English.

I registred on HLTV, due to the critism for the lurppis, mostly come from Sources cuz they dont know him and his nice career. You guys really have no clue about gaming don't u? until u have 4strong players on matchmaking and someone low who destroys ur gameplay and gamesense and u get mad cuz of that, all the shit on there are facts not storys created by him, we seen fiffy do -20 -30 all major tournaments in every single game i didnt see him the 4th not thinking 3rd, thats normal when u are entry frager, but GOD is fiff that? no its friberg and forest which they are awesome at doin it. No offense but for fiff but what lurpp said is very true, and keep writing those kind of shit so i read somoething more interesting than for some major tournaments winners.

....and again lurppis having a dig at Fifflaren, do you really envy him so much you have to critize him in every sentence you write?? Get a life lurppis, when will you understand that NiP decides who are in the roster, not you! And when talking about it, Fifflaren have actually stepped up his game lately. But you wouldn't notice since you are busy finding faults with his game all the time.

You don't have a brain !!! Gtr needs good teammates to play "normally". Ff is the reason why Gtr has been suxing ... It's as simple as that -- Nip need to kick either ff or Gtr ... These two can't be in the same team

I don't really understand. Should NiP keep Fifflaren in their roster or they should just kick him out? Its their team matter! not ours!!! I don't understand why people are so obsessed about Fifflaren when f0rest, GeT_RiGhT, friberg, Xizt do not have any problem with him? After all, they are the ones who are playing with him. Not us!
