MLG announces CS:GO event

Major League Gaming (MLG) has announced that it will hold a CS:GO LAN tournament in the United States in January.

Last month, MLG founder and CEO Sundance DiGiovanni had dropped a strong hint that the organisation would soon make a big investment in CS:GO after creating in 2012 an online ladder for this game to test the water.

MLG has now announced that it has partnered up with ESPN X Games to host a CS:GO tournament in Aspen, Colorado, from January 23-25, whose highlights will be aired during the X Games telecasts on ESPN and ABC, and on the X Games digital and social platforms.

Adam Apicella, who runs MLG's day-to-day operations, revealed on reddit that the event will feature a prize pool of $50,000, though this has not yet been confirmed by MLG itself.

The tournament will feature the top eight teams from North America and Europe, who will be determined through online qualifiers hosted via MLG.tv.

"2014 was a breakout year for eSports with the first ever MLG tournament at X Games Austin, millions watching competition on MLG.tv, and more than 71 million people competing in or watching eSports events around the globe," said Sundance DiGiovanni.

"Our X Games debut was such a success we knew we had to continue the tradition.

"The MLG X Games Aspen Invitational will further elevate eSports placing our top competitors amongst the best winter athletes in the world and continues to solidify MLG.tv as the leading destination for premium eSports programming."

To watch the MLG X Games Aspen in person, fans will have to purchase a premium pass at www.mlg.tv/store , which will include reserved seating, a behind-the-scenes tour and a gift bag with MLG merchandise.

Not tiny but definately not big either. They will have to go via Chicago or Houston if i recall correctly. On our trip towards Aspen we had more than 4 hour delay twice. But the view from the plane flying over the Rockys is pretty amazing.

Yeah, it will be cool, but I think 3xNA teams and 5xEU teams would be better if they only plan on inviting 8 teams in total. NetCode is a team with potential and for a tournament like this they might make a lineup change or two to get even better. But there isn't really 4 NA teams that can upset internationally.

I am glad that North America finally got another "big" tournament. The main reason why a lot of big teams do not go to American lans is that there are not a lot of tournaments that are big enough in prize pool and that they are not accustom to American random play styles and they tend to have a somewhat difficult time adjusting.
