Virtus.pro threaten event boycott

Virtus.pro CEO Anton "sneg" Cherepennikov has indicated that the organisation's teams will miss all events in 2015 which have outstanding prize money.

In a statement issued on Facebook, Cherepennikov reveals that Virtus.pro are owed a six-digit sum from some tournament organisers, whom he labels as "debtors and scammers."

Questioned about which events he was referring to, Virtus.pro's chief mentioned two that are involved in CS:GO tournaments: Starladder and Techlabs.

Cherepennikov has now announced that all Virtus.pro teams will "ignore leagues and tournaments" that owe the organisation money until the debts are cleared, with the exception of tournaments in which they are already participating.

Virtus.pro are due to take part in the upcoming StarSeries season, but if Starladder does not pay its outstanding prizes by February 1, then the team will withdraw from the tournament, adds Cherepennikov.

Moreover, he says that Virtus.pro will also stop attending events that do not sign contracts with the teams which include a payment schedule and fines for breaching the terms of the deal.

*UPDATE*: ESEA and Copenhagen Games have been removed from the list of tournaments with outstanding prize as per request from Virtus.pro, who say the money had already been paid.

Well, they should make contracts before traveling to the tournament, just so things like India Gaming Carneval wouldn't happen again. If they have the contract, they can just sue them like real Americans.

Everyone can be responsible for it. Copenhagen games should investigate the people promising them money or getting the money before announcing the prize pool. The teams could also investigate the organizers and there sponsors before showing up. It is always possible to take responsibility yourself.

Now we know why nip haven't attend in starladder or esea in a long time. This seems to be normal case in every new e-sport game. First there are all kinds of small and fishy tournaments going on with suspiciously large prize-pools. In time teams / players start whining or not attending anymore and these kind of tournaments goes away. Hopefully this will encourage other players and team managers to speak out loud. Would be nice to know how much nip actually got prize winnings in 2013.

I recall they quit both but I could be wrong. Didn't follow regular season and they weren't on finals on either. Wonder how much motivation you have to play if you are aware that they probably never pay the prizes and are already in debt a lot for your team.

Starladder founded in 2011. Only holds tournaments in Ukraine. Poor production value, no English stream except Anders casting from his bedroom, not many spectators on spot. So yes, young and small. I always wondered where they get prize-money. Thought they had some rich Russian investor but apparently they just didn't pay prizes. Esea holds tournaments from hotel lobby without spectators. Usually have 1-2 no name sponsors. They got prizes from esea subscriptions. So again, very small.

Never watched but I have a feeling it's big because dota has it's own crowdfunding for smaller tournaments. They probably can't steal that money :).

If they don't even get any money, why spend tons on travel? Also, they can't just sit by while they're having their rightfully earned money stolen. They have to step up.

That's the right move. Unpaid prizes have been an issue for over a decade now. Nowadays the scene is both old enough and big enough to have a solid base what comes to organizations and managers, no more Blight Gaming today or manager Blue stealing from the team. But a lot of the tournament hosts still battle with paying. CPL used to get their immense prize purse from online qualifiers. In the early days any team could join. It was only 80 bucks and that's not too much for 5 players to split between. There were like 250 teams per region (at least in our region). And several sponsors. CPL management and officials made ---shitloads--- of money and then didn't pay the prize money.

Lol. eSport is sometimes a joke. CS needs something like kESPA in Europe. What happend to G8 (or something like that?) who would take care of issues like this incase a tournament failed to pay out prize money with legal action? I remember G8 was of NiP, SK, EG, coL etc etc - correct me if im wrong. I support VP decision and respect them more even though I dont fanboy the CSGO team.

The Korea e-Sports Association or KeSPA is a South Korean body established to manage e-sports in South Korea. It works like a voice between players/teams/organisations and tournaments inbetween. Like a union. There is also International e-Sports Federation (IeSF) that started out in South Korea as well but it involves many countries. Its not strong as it sounds and I wish it was. This way no tournament can screw a team over and vice versa. Like a middle man in a tournament and the process.

Smart move from VP. Good to see someone who has identified the cause of a major problem in CS:GO that spans back many years. Properly executed, binding contracts are the only way to fix the likes of ESL, Starladder, ESEA, etc. refusing to remunerate teams and players (alongside other issues). Props to sneg, pushing CS:GO forward positively.

Yeah read this earlier, along with sneg1's comments. Seems like a lost in translation misunderstanding, which is unfortunate for ESEA, but the expectation for deceit is still prevalent in people's minds from the bitcoin mining disgrace.

On their facebook they write: Update 2: It's unfair to blame only Starladder. Here is the list of biggest debtors: ESEA, Excellent Moscow Cup, Techlabs, Copenhagen games, i-league. Edit: They didn't remove CPH Games or ESEA from Facebook Official Statement, which is weird if they told you so?

Why does VP make a public statement for this instead if handling it privately anyway. I mean sure they want to show people that they are boycotting the league but wait a tiny bit, handle it properly in private instead of risking the chance of being wrong in front of everybody and looking like idiots.

TaZ and Neo are so unlucky. They rarely had a stable organization back in 1.6 days (Pentagram and MYM are probably the ones who kept golden five the longest period of time). Tournaments such as ESWC (and others) never paid their prize money to Golden Five. I believe The poles haven't received around of hundred thousand of dollars.
