Top 20 players of 2014: Introduction

To commemorate the start of a new calendar year we will be revealing a list of our Top 20 players of 2014 day by day starting from January 1.

2014 was a big year for CS:GO and you were able to follow every last bit of it right here on HLTV.org. To close it out we bring you our big series Top 20 players which will attempt to show you who were the biggest stars of the year.

We witnessed new stars rising up, super-teams being formed, different teams winning titles throughout the year and it resulted in a record number of candidates for the ranking – 36.

We analyzed even more statistics from all bigger LAN events than before, selected MVP and All-Star team for each of them, and still it was very difficult to determine the final ranking.

2014 also brought us 3 major tournaments - EMS One Katowice, ESL One Cologne and DreamHack Winter - whose top performers earned themselves extra credit beyond the overall yearly stats, and it should be no surprise that all 20 players on our list played in at least two, most of them in all three of these $250,000 events.

In the end we also took into account contribution to team success and contribution in big matches such as semi-finals and finals (or the last three matches in a double elimination tournament) and came up with the list that will be revealed over the next 20 days:

There will be 9 new names compared to last year, while some known faces despite great performances had to be left out due to the tough competition.

It's also important to note that while Hovik "⁠KQLY⁠" Tovmassian's performance would have been a solid candidate for the Top 20, he wasn't considered due to his VAC ban.

A few more clues for those trying to guess the ranking: 6 of the 20 players had over 0.10 AWP kills per round, 16 attended at least one of ESEA's three events, 17 were at Gfinity 3 and 14 at FACEIT League Season 2 Finals.

Yeah, I know the role he played, and like you said, he was standard. With the end of year awards people tend to get hooked by something called the recency effect, where they put so much weight on things that happened recently, rather than looking at, in this case, the whole year. Which is why you get a lot of people in here claiming KRiMZ/Happy should be 1/2, when realistically they were very average for the majority of 2014, until the last 2-3 months.

GeT_RiGhT no.1 is ez... most contributing player from the most successful team this year (by a large margin). even if he was under performing in the last 6 months he delivered where it mattered most. the rest are tougher to rank, kennyS is definitely top3 as far as performance goes but his accomplishments are far behind everyone in NiP, VP and fnatic.

No. Schneider was fnatics best player for a while, around the time they won the first major. He was one of the best in the world by a long shot, he was a versatile player that could clutch and entry. I tried to just keep the list limited to just 2014. I think friberg had some huge moments in huge games with his entry fragging to warrant him in my top 20. EDIT: and hiko just fell off way too much the last couple of months... I had to drop him out of the top 20.

Kio no longer plays as an entry fragger since joining LDLC shoxie said multiple times that he is the entry fragger for the team. apEX is not even close to fribergs ingame abilities, friberg is the main reason why NiP won cologne. Happy is the most versatile, he lurks he is the best pistole player and is an amazing igl. Strat-wise ex6tenz is better than pronax JW said it on the thoorin interview.

Wtf did you just said. Players contribution to his team sucess is same as his rating or individual performance. Atleast what you can measure and observe from outside. The team sucess is a whole diferent thing and one player have only limited impact. There is no fuckin way how JW or anyone can be individually better (thats what this ranking is about) than kennyS. Why are so few people including Friberg in there top 20 lists? Sure, he might not have been the best player in NiP throughout the year but he's shown himself in plenty of really important moments. NiP would never have been in ESL one Cologne final without him he had extraordinary clutches and rounds in general during that tournament. Also during Dreamhack Winter 2014 he was probably sharing the number 1 spot with f0rest for NiP's side. Im not sure how he performed during the rest of the year, but he's definiatly been doing his job when NiP needs it the most and in thje biggest tournaments.

Being the fourth ranked player in the world despite playing in a terrible team like mouz should only improve his ranking. 1_kennyS 2_f0rest 3_krimz or byali ( both had a great year) 4_dupreeh's rate never been down this year , only his team . 3-4 _ GeT_RiGhT maybe on 3rd or 4th , we can't really decide . Pashabiceps had a good year , maybe in top 10 . 6-10_ JW had a pretty good year , but he sucked in some events , fnatic sucked at first and the end of the year they dominated . 6-10_Guardian carried Na'Vi the whole year i expect the 5th or 6th place for him , he had a pretty good performance . 6_10 Shoxie did well with epsilon and titan , but not a really end of they year performance i expect 5th to 8th place for him . Ofc these all are my predictions based on whole year's performance not just 1 month or couple of tournaments . And for those who put up device , allu , simple , steel , snax , with my respect to device , his rating with the team is good , but we take a whole year's performance , he might get a spot in 10th to 20th but not sure , simple .... he was only good at the end of the year , he played good in the begin of the year but a few matches so that doesn't really count comparing to all other stars , allue .. mouz only had a good performance at the end of the year , with karrigan's leadership , they sucked at first allu might not even be on the 20 list , steel only did well on CEVOs ESEA , stuff like that where he plays against low american teams , he might get a spot for his rating but in my opinion it will be hard , Last but least snax , great mind working good frags , low rating , he did well on the begin g of the year but he played low on the last so i don't see him on the list . i don't care about others :> PEACE OUT !

Achievements are not only for the teams, if he has awesome K/D but never gets thru group stages or quarters, it's not as efficient as someone carrying a final against a top3 team, kennyS should never get a top4 spot on this list, but he is worthy of top10 for sure.

I like how people just ignore play styles and praise anyone with high stats. Titan plays around Kennys and his awp. The team caters to him. When he's playing well he looks amazing, when he plays poorly the team flops and people will just blame the rest of his team. That's how titan plays though and that's why he was removed from vg. Can he play on a team that's not built to support him? Who's knows. I do know that someone like Guardian would look probably just as good if navis play revolved around him completely too. Then there's obviously lurkers who should have great stats. They put themselves in positions to get clean up kills. If they don't have great stats they shouldn't be lurking etc. This year is tough though. I think rating fnatic players in general is tough. There's an argument for any of the 5 as being the best player on the team. Pronax will probably get overlooked cause the other 4 frag better but how to you rate that vs probably the best igl (him or happy I'd say).

jw, kennys - agreed -krimz pure bullshit, he was 4th best player in LGB and he is not consistent in fnatic -happy started to play well from esl one cologne and exploded in mid october, still it's not good enough to be top5 through the whole year -shox very inconsistent, he can win a match solo but he's underperforming very often. top10 for sure, top5 i'm not sure

And what happend? Did we really buy "I lift my mouse often" that might be the most poor explanation I have ever heard in my life. Its even worse than getting your S/O in the middle of the act cheating on you and tells its "your fault because you were spying" its ridiculous. That the most suspicious one of fnatic gets to be number #2 in worlds Top20 players is almost as ridiculous as the fnatic sponsor still letting this guy play, just like that. Its sad to see where the cs-scene has gone to be.
