GMX reveals Epsilon match-fix case

Robin "GMX" Stahmer has revealed that Epsilon lost an ESEA Invite match against OverGaming on purpose.

Robin "⁠GMX⁠" Stahmer, who was removed by Epsilon earlier in the week, claims that his former team lost their ESEA S17 match against OverGaming on September 21 on purpose to make a profit on CSGOLounge.

Nothing was at stake in this match as neither team could reach the LAN Finals, and despite the fact that CSGOLounge's odds were favouring Epsilon (54% to OverGaming's 46%), they were thrashed 3-16 by the Spanish team on de_inferno.

GMX turned on his former team after being removed

Not a single Epsilon player placed a bet on this match, but GMX claims that he and his former team-mates profited by receiving skins from friends, some of them well-known figures in the scene, including Morgan "⁠B1GGY⁠" Madour, Toma "⁠akeR⁠" Radovic and Steeve "⁠Ozstrik3r⁠" Flavigni.

B1GGY, who is currently playing for Epsilon as a stand-in, turned in a $216 profit after betting almost $188 worth of skins, while Ozstrik3r placed one of his only three bets on this particular match.

"First of all, I want to thank the Epsilon organization, its director and the staff members who truly are great people," Stahmer told vakarm.net.

"They always supported me and my team mates since June. The Epsilon staff was not aware of what I’m about to say. I want to apologize to them, and to all the community for what I’m about to say. There are things you regret, and this is the case.

"In last September, we deliberately lost our ESEA match against OverGaming in order to win skins for ourselves and for friends of us. All of my team mates and some of their friends were aware of this.

"We however did not planned this together, and every player acted on his own to get their skins back. I won some skins via a friend on this match, and I know some of my team mates also won skins."

HLTV.org is trying to reach out to Epsilon for a comment on this story, so more developments are expected shortly

There's no hierarchy in this. A thief is a thief. But I'd say that a thief that gives himself up (and gives his accomplices up) is at least taking responsibility for what he did. It's probably true that GMX did that to get revenge on his teammates, but nonetheless, his action is the best possible choice he had at his disposal for the sake of the scene. It doesn't make him a better thief than ex-IBP, but neither does it make him a worse one.

I think it's more the fact that he only outted them because he got the boot. He's come out with this info now, but only since he was forced to 'quit' as a professional, it seems it's more out of spite than out of honesty. +1 for what you just said adr, it's good that it's brought to attention just how fragile the betting system can be manipulated as it stands in order for it to hopefully improve. How can it improve? Idk. Right now they can just get a friend/accomplice to put in one or several max bet and send the winnings later on with little chance of being busted unless constantly keeping track of every invite players inventory which is pretty much impossible. Or you have to rely on people stepping foward, but just how often do guilty people own up to their own crimes unless they are busted? Either that or the bettings sites has to go, it's amazing that they get away with it. Who knows how frequent this happens? It's a game of cs afterall, losing a couple of rounds on purpose isn't hard to fake. There should be more emphasis on the betting sites in question. It's obvious they have no control of this, no scratch that they never had control because there were no set of rules to begin with. The whole thing is flawed. This guy has questionable motives though. Considering he is no longer part of the team, he's out for blood... valve's/csgolounge's fault, because they waited years to set and make public a rule and the punishment in case you brake that rule "every pro,manager and any other esports personality isn't allowed to bet or to influence the match result or others bet." The match fixing is only one of the symptoms of what csgolounge have done till now and what they are doing.

I'm pretty sure that all people involved in these fixed matches knew that it wasn't allowed. If I recall correctly from Swag's statement, he claimed to have been willing to tell iBP-management about the whole thing before it went public, but DaZeD told them it would be stupid because it would lead to bans (which it also did), which means that they were aware of the potential punishments if the match-fixings were to become public knowledge. Playing the "Oh, I didn't know that it wasn't allowed"-card in this sort of situation doesn't work.

But the punishment wasn't made public by that time so valve can't ban someone for life just because they want to. Not to mention that they've waited months to make public the rule where "the players, the managers can't bet or influence by any mean others bets". Honestly, I'm calling BS on this one. For a start, why on earth (if you are going to throw) do it on a 54/46 split? If they were going to throw, they would do it on a bigger odds in their favoured match. Also, he just left. He will want revenge, especially considering that he called out fxy0 for being 'toxic'.
