ESL to host $30,000 female tourney

ESL has announced that it will host a four-team female CS:GO tournament in Katowice with $30,000 in cash prizes.

Held at the Spodek Arena on March 15, the very last day of ESL One Katowice, this female tournament, called Intel Challenge Katowice, will see the four best teams in the world lock horns for a piece of the $30,000 prize pool.

To determine the participating teams, ESL will organise qualifiers in Poland, Europe and the United States over the next two weeks. While the Polish and the North American qualifiers will each have one spot in Katowice up for grabs, the European qualifiers will have two.

There will be two European cups taking place on February 17 and 19, each one rewarding the top two sides with places in the continental qualifier, with the two finalists then securing places in Katowice.

Below you can find the dates for the qualifying process for Intel Challenge Katowice:

  • Europe European Qualifier Cup #1 - 17.02.2015
  • Poland Polish Qualifier Cup - 18.02.2015
  • Europe European Qualifier Cup #2 - 19.02.2015
  • United States American Qualifier Cup - 21.02.2015
  • Europe European Qualifier Final - 22.02.2015

To sign up for these qualifiers, head over to ESL's website for the event.

 Polish Qualifier Cup - 10.02.2015
 European Qualifier Cup #1 - 17.02.2015
 European Qualifier Cup #2 - 19.02.2015
 American Qualifier Cup - 21.02.2015

Yeah, there must have been some misunderstanding. What I meant to say was that female teams are indeed allowed to qualify in "regular" qualifiers, and that it would be wrong if they weren't allowed to. Regarding the gender debate in sports, it is a bit different when it come to physical sports such as football, high jump, etc. and e-sports or "intellectual sports" such as chess or poker. No matter what people say, there are differences between male and female physiology, so it is therefore natural to separate male and female players in higher leagues in football, basketball etc. But that is not an issue in e-sports. Muscular superiority doesn't make the slightest difference, so these types of sports generally would allow more mixteams and mixtournaments. If female teams are worse than male teams they have only got themselves to blame. But that's my opinion.

it's sexist if female teams aren't allowed to qualify for the major, but is it then also sexist if male teams aren't allowed to qualify for this tournament?

The only way to stop this kind of sexism is to not support or watch any female only tournaments. We dont need this kind of shit in esports.

Point of ESL-One Katowice: Pitting the best teams from all over the world to duke it out over a prize pool. Point of ESL-One Katowice Female Tournament: Giving female teams good publicity, and hopefully broadening the demographic of e-sports. Therefore it is pointless to even allow male players entering a female tournament. It would be counterproductive. I still don't think it is the right way to go, but it definitely isn't a crisis that calls for a riot.

That makes no sense they can qualify for smaller tournaments and get publicity. And why can't smaller unknown male teams qualify then so they can get publicity?

Having low tier-male teams getting publicity serves little purpose. The fact that female teams get publicity actually serves to broaden the demographic. And if publicity and broadening the demographic is the key purpose of these female tournaments, it is far better if ESL hosts them, rather than smaller organisations. Also female teams have qualified for smaller tournaments. Think about BMG in Fragbite Masters, for instance.

I never said that I'm all for the concept of dividing e-sports based on gender. But realistically, why would you let men enter a female-only tournament? That would ruin the whole point of that tournament.

Actually most female teams exclude themselves from playing with males. Because they know they wouldn't touch 1$ from cashprices tournaments because they have less experience, skill and commitment in the game. At least in female tournament they have a chance.

That should not matter. If a female, or mixgender-team wants to qualify against male teams, they should definitely have the opportunity to do so. Denying them that right serves no purpose.

Fact is there's maybe 20 female teams in europe, 10 who are good enough to win. On the other hand, there is 1, maybe 2 polish teams. I don't understand why having a polish qualifier is necessary. They should instead make the polish qualifier an european one.

what would change 30 K in male tournament? NOthing they earn more than that shit from stickers already . At least girls can have a decent tournament . And its really good . Stop talking about girl equal stuff . WE won't see any other girl reaching a really top pro tournament such as we wont see 5 global (without team) reach to qualify for a major tournament . Stop bullshit i think its really good for esport to have a development for girls too .

such as in esport . Big extrapolation we are on a planet 3% are human 97 % alien . you wont have same chance to find really good human to fight in a big league . in csgo there is like 10% girl even less . So let's have their tournament . I think its cool it changed a bit 30 K tournament is really cool for girls whereas for this amount of money some pro male team wont even lift off a finger to go participate. I don't understand what is wrong to see 2-3 girl tournament in the year....

I agree with you. It's better for the game and e-sports as a whole. Giving girls a stage like this (ESL Katowice) will boost the attention female gamers have for competitive gaming in my opinion. If females should compete in male tournaments is a whole other discussion. I totally get this move by ESL.

That's not good at all. It will just encourage women to stay amateurs... They need to step it up and try their chance at normal qualifiers, hosting events made just for them will NOT help them.

It will make the female scene more competitive than it is now for sure. They still have been entering the male quals but get wrecked by randoms normally. So it's pretty clear that they aren't good enough right now and something has to change in order for them to actually progress. This much money should hype the female community up and it'll be a small step in the right direction, rather than just getting nowhere. Don't get me wrong, I'm nit sold on this move. Why do females get their own tournament because their community is worse than the main community? It really don't hope that ESL/volvo is attempting to grow this community in order for a profit return, they'd get much more success if they held an 'Asian only' tournament alongside the main event. They are kinda in the same position as the females but there is a lot more potential there, so I'm a little confused why this has happened. I can only assume it's to put ESL/volvo in the moral good books? But as I say, hopefully this will breath some life into the fe community, and then in the future they'll be more equipped when they're thrown into the deep end.

Well, the only positive aspect I see in this move is the fact that it's based on qualifiers rather than on invites, which will indeed motivate female teams and boost their scene a bit, but unfortunately it can't keep going like this. It's splitting the scene for no real gain and the female teams are staying in their comfort zone in the end. Anyway, I hope the scene will last long enough for female teams to finally take the game seriously.

True, but I don't think valve will keep this up indefinitely. If that happens then for sure the fe teams at some point will stop improving, but if it's just the one or two to start with, or even one every now and again, it should provide enough incentive to improve and keep improving with hopes of getting into these kinds of tournaments in the future, except not only with fe opponents.

Yeah, maybe. Or maybe another solution would be to host a fe tournament for every major of this year, then next year, merge both tournaments with some fe pre-qualifiers, and after that, only mixed qualifiers and pre-qual. That way their scene could have some time to grow before jumping into the deep end. I have huge doubts about the whole thing though ^^.

+1 sounds good, it obvious they are in way over their head atm, so slowly integrating them into the scene rather than throwing them right in the middle might be the best solution. I still think this kind of attention would he far more prosperous if it was shown towards a larger community than females. Asian for example would be a better choicee imo.

But Asian teams don't really lack confidence as fe teams do, so simply hosting pre-qualifiers (or even qualifiers) for Asia should be enough to boost their scene. Once Asia realize there's some serious business to be made in CS, they'll start practicing, and by experience, I know that when Asia starts practicing at video games, it doesn't take long before they start showing serious results ^^. That said, I've been waiting for events to support Asia since like 2013, and I think the only real attempt we had in that regard was MSI Beat it!, which is sad.

Yeah I think a simultaneous asian tourney would be silly but I'm just using it as an example to compare it to a simultaneous fe tourney. My point being, I don't see how valve can choose one group over another, especially females over another group with greater potential. If valve are willing to put in this amount of effort towards a fe tournament, then why are they taking so long to bridge into asia? Unless I'm totally wrong and it turns out females make up a greater number of players than asia, which I doubt.

I don't think it's Valve's initiative on this fe tourney. I think it's ESL who either wants to boost the female scene, or either think that it'll bring spectators and viewers. Or both. But I may be wrong and maybe it's Valve's decision, but 30k seems a bit ridiculous compared to the 250k they pull out for the normal tournament.

Didn't read the whole discussion below, but I believe you both get the point very well :) I think this will help the female scene. The thing is, there could be a lot of female gamers out there not knowing going pro is a thing. In my opinion all small things will help the scene (cs:go and esports as a whole) grow.

Acutally I started wondering, what would happen, if a male wanted to attend this female tourney? For example, in Poker female tournaments men can participate, if they want. Otherwise it's discrimination. So sometimes some men put on wigs or whatever and troll female tournaments as far as I know.

people wont understand that separate its not just about physic specifically for esport . Women have to break more barrier to reach top level . even if a girl is good enough to play in a male . they will never been chosen by male even if she's cute . For best example juliano was standin in SLTV she did well (2nd at scoreboard) but whatver she was just pick as standin . Kly was 5th for SLTV for buykey (2 years ago) they draw fnatic beat ESC (older Virtus pro) beat Kick and then there was esc prague she book a day to not work to go to prague with buykey 2 day before whe was gettin kicked to take Scream as standin because Img cant afford to send img's line up ( shox scream oz etc ) . So yeah Scream did his best lan performance but she got kicked just 2 DAYS before 2 fuckin days before . its like there is absolutly no respect . There is sexism in esport . just reading hltv proove my point so much its so funny . Im a good player of badminton maybe the only sport where you can see at top level doble mixed (as much importance as men's doble) . and i have no problem to play with girl in mixed doble. if there was no girl's tournament WE WOULDNT SEE ANY FULL GIRL teams at all maybe only 1 or 2 girl in a low lan .

+1 Gender discrimination is gender discrimination. They should have called this an amatuer tournament and allowed tier 2 - 3 teams, male and female, or mixed to play. And please don't white knight this. Female gamers like someone mentioned above, have no mental limitations like the physical limitations in the "standard" form of sports to stop them from competing. This will create separation and disallow them the opportunity to improve their game by playing against the highest level teams. If you only have to compete in a little box...

Does being a woman guarantee you a free spot on a prestigious tournament even though you're not any close to be on the top level in the game? I GUESS SO

I think this is great! Gaming is such a male-dominant hobby, and I think the reason why females are generally worse than males in most esports is because far less females have tried playing, and therefore, less talent is discovered. I really hope these sorts of things will get more girls willing to play, and maybe in the future there will exist no sexism in e-sports :)

Even though gaming has existed for a long time it's never been "accepted by the society" for girls to game, so your argument is invalid. And yeah also, Maddelisk, Starcraft 2. Pro girl gamer competing against males

As an experiment, should be interesting to see how female teams and players react/shuffle if there is a limit on the number of male players that are able to participate on a team in this event. It would say a few things: -Teams that stick together as an all-female team genuinely enjoy playing with each other. No harm in that. -If a female team resorts to picking up male players, they could enjoy playing with their female core of 3 or so, but have resorted to picking up sub-par female players for the sake of competing in all female tournaments, admitting that they were taking advantage of the system all along. -Say there was a limit of 3 male players per team; are those male players simply putting up with two other female players for the sake of the female tournament, or would they continue competing with these players outside of the tournament? Either way it shows how flawed the system is, considering gender would be prioritized over skill just to gain entrance to the competition. I'd still pay to see this happen though.

The main event is not a male only tournament. Anyone can qualify. The female tournament is, well, female tournament. Sooo, what exactly is unclear to you? Do you have any second thoughts about your gender? Are you a girl trapped in a man's body?

Oh, in terms of organization. Perhaps you should've said that on the very beginning. Amateurs cup can have serious organization. But they are still for amateurs, so... yeah, night cups, mate. This game rose plenty already, there are still new and new teams competing. I kind of think you are now just arguing for the sake of arguing, jumping from subject to subject (female gaming, online cups, serious organization, growing scene), so enjoy it. But enjoy it on your own. See ya.

Gender-based tournaments are bullshit. Especially when everyone knows there are no girls on the internet.

..and please s t f u you stupid male fucks, this is nothing but good for the sports and will probably encourage more girls to go playing and then maybe some of you can get laid someday? But in all seriousness, wicked news! I hope many teams will sign up :)
