fnatic to Katowice final over Virtus.pro

fnatic have advanced to the ESL One Katowice grand final after seeing off Virtus.pro 2-0 (19-17 on de_cobblestone and 16-8 on de_mirage).

The beginning of de_cobblestone was very close as the two teams traded a couple of rounds, but after that initial stage Virtus.pro ran riot, forcing fnatic to call a timeout at 1-6. Robin "flusha" Rönnquist then looked determined to put his team back in the game as he showed impressive galil control while taking down three opponents, but Filip "NEO" Kubski won the round for his team.

With the scoreline 8-1 in favour of Virtus.pro, Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer opened things up with two AWP frags in the boost position near the Upper Tunnel plus one more kill inside B, which powered fnatic to reduce the gap to five rounds.

Wiktor "TaZ" Wojtas then put Virtus.pro again on the right track with three P250 kills while hidden inside A, but fnatic regained control of the proceedings and brought the scoreline to 6-9.

In the second half, Freddy "KRIMZ" Johansson helped fnatic to win the pistol round with three frags to his name, and the Swedish team did not take their foot off the gas for a while as they won the following three rounds to take the lead for the very first time in this game.

flusha had a lot of big plays on de_cobblestone

Rounds kept going back and forth as neither side were able to carve out a big lead, but in the end Virtus.pro, who were being cheered on by the crowd in Katowice, managed to crawl back into the game and force it to overtime despite fnatic having three map points.

Virtus.pro gave a good account of themselves in the first half of overtime and took a 2-1 lead after playing on the offensive side, but fnatic simply played out a flawless game as Terrorists and took three rounds without response to run out 19-17 winners.

The map that followed was de_mirage, on which Virtus.pro are probably one of the world’s best teams. Still, it was fnatic who claimed bragging rights first as they secured the opening three rounds.

Virtus.pro then responded by winning the first gun round, but their recovery lasted only for a moment, as KRIMZ picked up three frags while defending A to frustrate the home side.

fnatic went on add the following to rounds to take the score to 6-1, but then the game turned: an eco push towards A allowed Virtus.pro to break the Swedes’ momentum and pull some rounds together, but some big plays from olofmeister in the final two rounds brought the scoreline to 8-7 in favour of Markus "pronax" Wallsten’s men at half-time.

Virtus.pro unable to repeat Katowice final presence

The Swedish giants came out strongly in the second half and added three more rounds to their tally, this way taking the score to 11-7. Virtus.pro then picked up the first gun round with some strong defensive play, but they were unable to stop a catwalk/apartment split from fnatic in the following round.

With their economy in shambles and a huge deficit to come back from, Virtus.pro were unable to pick themselves up, this way falling one step shy of another epic Katowice final at the Spodek Arena.

Good match but I feel like both teams were not playing at their best level and both suffered from pressure. fnatic almost got caught off guard on cbble which was most likely one of the surprises they had prepared since I don't think much people expected a team to actually pick this map. Though it was surprising to see JW doubt his AWP'ing capabilities on this map, but olofm delivered an impressive performance on T side. A very enjoyable player to watch. As for VP, it feels like they were never able to get the momemtum rolling in their favour, while they're generally so strong at during majors. Still nice to see NEO playing a tournament at the level we should be expecting from him, and Snax still playing very well.

Or maybe jw was playing a spot where AWP is not effective? Or it could be just a map specific choice. If you were around since 1.6 times, you would remember that Markeloff never picked up the awp on inferno and mirage. Starix used to be the main awper on those maps.

I agree with you concerning the spot JW was playing, but I'm mainly making this point since there it was flusha playing the AWP and I could have seen them actually swap positions on cbble. I also agree with your point concerning Na'Vi, but at that time Starix was also AWP'ing quite a lot, a bit like olofm for fnatic who is their secondary AWP but also plays it a lot, even in CT side. Here I don't say he should have, since he was making a very good job at the position he was holding, which couldn't be so with an AWP. Here I was just surprised to see flusha take the role, even though he is also very capable, just that he doesn't often do so in official matches.

All the attention whores starting "VP sux" threads now. Sad. Makes you realise how many people are true fans and how many are the cancer that came with the game getting more recognition & skins & gambling. Respect to true fans that are left on this website. GG Fnatic, gl next time VP.

Sadly, there'll always be people like that, both on the internet and in real life, but everyone will come to learn how to deal with them eventually ;)

GG, I was hoping for VP because the crowd would be insane in the final but instead its fnatic again.... and possibly NIP(pls be, I hate NBFAG). I hope fnatic wins the whole thing now.

fnatic took both pistol and gain too many rounds on the top of it on mirage. on cbble vp should took it, but their set-up on biggest bs (A?) was static and fnatic was taking it after 1st guy died for number of rounds and in overtime. anyway it was gg

i was really suprised esl faced vp vs fnatic. You want know something? Groups for lol was 100% calculated for most viewers per region, popularity for team, no same regions in group itc. All knows Fnatic is hard top 1 right know, no one have chances against them, so i I thought they put vp vs nip/tsm or envyus because with crowd advancage it could by like 60%/40% to vp for advance to final and play in spodek. Im sure groups for esl one katowice was selected in little similar rules to lol.

I feel like VP could've closed on Cobble, they just played such a stiff overtime on CT and couldn't adapt to what Fnatic was doing. Mirage went downhill the moment Fnatic won second pistol round, which was really disappointing considering that Mirage is VP's best map. Either way gg wp, Fnatic deserved the win and deserves to win the major. Let's just hope that someone will finally step up their game and beat Fnatic in a fair fight.
