ESL in major talks with CS:GO teams

ESL is interested in tying CS:GO teams down to exclusivity deals, which could change the face of the scene forever, a joint investigation between HLTV.org and Richard Lewis of The Daily Dot has revealed.

Some of Europe's strongest teams are currently pitting their wits at the ESL Pro League finals, in Cologne, but something much bigger is on the agenda of the German company these days.

Senior ESL staff have met with representatives of top CS:GO teams from around in world in San Francisco with a view to discussing a brand new competition to launch later this year. The catch? Teams are required to sign exclusivity deals with ESL, which means that they would be barred from taking part in online and offline tournaments hosted by other companies.

Ninjas in Pyjamas, Team SoloMid, Virtus.pro, Team Liquid, Na`Vi, fnatic and EnVyUs are some of the teams that had representatives at the meeting, in which they were enticed by ESL's talk of the biggest prize purse ever in the history of the game - around $18 million, sources have told HLTV.org and The Daily Dot.

The choice of San Francisco as the location of the meeting is not a coincidence as it is home to two of ESL's prospective major partners in this new competition: Twitch and Vulcun.

ESL wants to host the biggest CS:GO competition ever

Earlier this week, Twitch hired retired player Robin "Fifflaren" Johansson and former Cloud9 member Spencer "Hiko" Martin to promote the company in the Counter-Strike community as it looks to tackle the growing popularity of MLG's streaming platform in upper echelon of the scene.

As for Vulcun, the fantasy esports giant expanded to CS:GO last month when it started featuring FACEIT League matches, and it is now interested in heavily supporting ESL after recently raising $12 million in venture capital from several investors, including Sequoia Capital.

The first signs of ESL wanting to take their own path appeared in February, when the Germany-based company announced that ESL One Cologne, scheduled for August 22-23, would be the first-ever $250,000 CS:GO tournament without the support of Valve.

With so much money going into CS:GO and with viewership records being broken on a regular basis, the prospect of one company trying to get ahead of the game hardly comes as a surprise, but other tournament organisers have expressed concern to HLTV.org about the consequences of the exclusivity clause ESL is trying to enforce.

Sources say that Valve may not even be aware of ESL's plans, with the meeting in San Francisco coinciding with the game company's employee annual holiday in Hawaii.

The teams attending the meeting are expected to reach a decision in the coming hours, but one thing is certain: as ESL is trying to change the shape of the scene, tournament organisers such as ESWC, Gfinity, DreamHack and PGL are nervously biting their nails in anticipation.

*UPDATE* ESL Managing director Ulrich Schulze released a brief statement on the matter on Reddit, saying: "There is only one thing to say about this: ESL is not interested in locking out any tournament organizers from running CS:GO events, nor teams from attending them."

How EXACTLY is this "very nice". If this ESL deal goes ahead it will MAJORLY cripple the scene for other tournaments and even possible valve themselves, It sounds like ESL want to have a stranglehold on the scene very similar to how Riot does with League of Legends with their "LCS". I really hope this deal does not go ahead as it will put too much power into ESL's hands.

I agree, but something had to be done I guess to get Valve out of their fucking chairs... I mean, a popularity near Dota 2s but with only 250k prizepool... in like school gyms for groups... stream quality among the worst I've ever seen.

What do you mean by "get Valve out of their fucking chairs" Valve have shown 100% commitment and support to CS:GO pretty much from the beginning with the backing of major events.

CS 1.6 = finished game, properly balanced weapons, good optimization, good customizability, good maps, good visibility of playermodels. CS:GO = unfinished piece of shit State of money = everything gets invested in CS:GO

1.6 - Crouch-walking, stupid wallbangs, bugged flashes, bugged smokes, game-breaking boosts that have been around for 10 years. All of this after the game has been out for 16 years.

Crouchwalking is used as mechanic of the game just like bunnyhopping in quake. Wallbangs allow people with a great ability to predict where enemies are to get an advantage. Smokes and flashes were never bugged, you could only abuse certain pixel positions in maps to throw them through walls. look how old the game is and when it was last updated btw. Game-breaking boosts are not allowed in any competition, if you spot someone using an illegal position in a pcw, you could kick them. All of this in a very old game with little to no support after version 1.6. What do we have in CS:GO? GAMEBREAKING weapon balance including pistols being overpowered and snipers underpowered. Almost no graphical optimization options for slower pcs. Playermodels blend in with the fucking maps. Shitty HDR effects that you are forced to use. No movement skill requirements. Underpowered flashes and overpowered smokes.

You are making 0 sense. Just because you like something more doesn't mean that it's not a bug. "Flashes aren't bugged you can just throw them through walls" That's the fkin definition of a bug. And because the bugs have been in the game for 10 years is really not an argument in your advantage.

You're putting words in my mouth that i didn't even say, re-read what i wrote then think about it again. Bugs aren't as important on a competitive level especially in 1.6 as abusing them will get you an immediate ban. But fixing bugs that allowed a lot of new playstyles to be created without destroying other ones is also breaking a huge part of the actual game.

How the FUCK can you call 1.6 a finished game? Russian walking, Bunny Hopping and countless boost spots exist.. That is NOT a finished game, You clearly have no idea what your talking about and are just living in the glory mentality of "1.6 3eva" Get over yourself.

Imagine quake without bunnyhopping, now imagine CS without wallbanging, slight bunnyhopping and countless other things. "overpowered" boost spots don't matter as they were already not allowed in competition, just like people aren't allowed to use certain scripts in CS:GO. Skins and money thrown into a game don't make it good.

also take into account how many great playstyles have developed out of game mechanics that were originally flukes, if you take them away you remove an aspect of how the game can be played.

NO not cool. If this goes trough ESL will most likey do what they did for LCS. So teams will play every weekend in Cologne. What else is on weekends? Most lans. CPH games, DreamHack and so on. Small lans too that have been the backbone of CS. So even when ESL are saying they don't want to "lock" teams, they're still end up killing the sport.

I'm sure it will come, or be replaced by something else/better. Majors promote CS:GO, and it's in valve's best interest to promote majors. Not having to help fund this one means they can put money from esports cases into other majors, that's all. They're still going to have drops and stickers and everything, because those things help promote viewership and viewership means more people buy the game. Besides, they make money on stickers, and pick'em forces you to buy stickers if you want to participate. Why would they purposefully hurt their own revenue?

No, it doesn't mean that. Other tournaments like ESWC, ESEA, FaceIT will still take place (at least for some time anyway), they will just be really unattractive to watch due to the lack of top tier teams. This dick move would only benefit the "lesser" teams as they will be able to win some tournaments now. We're basically looking at the scenario where ESWC finals feature Penta vs Cph Wolves. That's not really a world championship anymore, that's just a bullshit.

Nah, Penta would probably be in ESL (well ok, it depends how many team would be there). What i feel it would be more like Orbit v Gamers2 or something and what it lead to - death of those tournaments.

Exactly, it just won't be attractive enough. Hopefully this won't pass. I still sort of hope, that even though they are managers of a gaming company, they have some integrity and want the best for the scene, rather than for their own pockets. I sound too naive :D

the article didn't say that there isn't a possibility of valve giving even more money but that there are 250k$ sponsored by ESL so it could still be possible that valve may add 250k on top of that

Did you even read the article, it's not a regular amount of money, it's an $18,000,000 potential reward if you give your CS career to ESL. The players will have the choice for far less money with options and choices,or a shit load of money with more tension in life, more risk. It's a gamble for them and if they're money hungry, they'll take it.

I don't even think it'd necessarily be bad thing that the teams would get tied down to ESL only. There's a massive inflation in leagues and tournaments, which from a viewer perspective can be quite confusing to follow, so perhaps tying things up into one or two large tournaments isn't such a bad idea.

It depends on the form of whole thing. Good thing with current structure is teams are chosing which events to attend. So we have for example ESL Winter now without Swedes and only TSm and VP were on CPH Games because others chosen to rest a bit and so on. We have diversity of teams and tournaments. If this new series or something will look like LCS then... Eh

Probabaly something like LCS in LoL. Should be interesting, but I have to say I loved to see the variety of tournaments. Some were bigger, some were smaller - it's enjoyable to watch top10 teams instead of just, let's say, top4 all the time. I will hurt dreamhack the most, I think. But LCS somehow works together with IEM (or whatever its called: EMS, etc) so maybe there is a chance ;) Looks interesting, thanks for keeping us updated ;)

It would be actually better for tier 2/3 teams, as they could win other tournaments such as ESEA, FaceIT finals, ESWC, etc. where tier 1 teams wouldn't be able to participate. Also, tier2/3 can still qualify for ESL majors. The victims would be first and foremost the viewers, because I am not really that keen on watching finals of ESWC with 3DMAX vs Penta. Nothing against those teams, but it just isn't that attractive to me.

vierwership numbers (and prize money accordingly) for FACEIT / ESEA will obviously drop if all the tier 1 team are in ESL and ESL alone.

Well of course, that's why it is a dick move towards every league and every person who invested their time to make CS what it is now (FaceIT, ESEA, casters, ...), only so ESL can reap the rewards of their hard work.

This is why Valve needs to get their shit together and start hosting tournaments themselves, or atleast put in the same amount of dough as they do in The International for Dota, or we will find us in a spot like this. With one big organisation killing of everything else. This would be horrible for the scene, and I hope that the teams that are in San Fran right now discussing this, don't only look at the potential pay checks.

Well we don't know, ESL could arrange lower tier leagues to. But anyway this is not up to ESL, its up to Valve, and I think Vale will be pissed cuz ESL tries to go behind their back on their Hawaiian vacation. Valve owns the game, and everything around it, they could pull the plug and just forbid ESL from hosting anything related to any of their products if they want to. So until we hear anything officially from anyone involved or Valve, I wouldn't take this seriously. And also this article is a little misleading. The 18 million dollar prize purse is not a potential prize pool for a tournament. It is instead, and I quote the original article at Daily Dot. "Vulcun. The esports organization, which at one time owned an LCS team, has recently received a windfall of venture capital, announcing a $12 million investment round from from major investors including Sequoia Capital, Matrix Partners, Crosscut Ventures, Mark Pincus, Universal Music Group and CAA Ventures. Vulcun has been in talks about the potential of buying a league for a few weeks now, according to sources close to the organization, and currently sponsors European tournament organizer FaceIt. According to sources involved in the meeting, the total proposed package from ESL and Vulcun is in the region of $18 million, a hefty chunk of which will be paid out to the organizations in exchange for agreeing to exclusivity to the league. ESL have shown signs of wanting to take their own path separate from the game's developer, Valve."

Seems odd doing this kind of thing without volvo tbh, even hosting their own major seems odd and SURELY valve would have been involved in that discussion as I can't see them just passing off the money they make from a major so I'm sure volvo are in on it.

Not good idea at all. This will be terrible, but even to have a slightest chance of success they need to price out the top teams. I mean to be able to play for 250k tournament 4 times a year is nothing, pretty much worse than it is now. They need to pay double price money and some money for exclusivity (=loss of income from other events) Anyways, they need 4-5 of top10 teams and two of top3 teams for this to be anything. CS has so many teams that even if NIP/Fnatic would sigh with Navi and Penta, it wouldnt not be enough. There would still be enough teams for other tournaments, and they would simply cash in much easier. These few teams that would sign would be in trouble of never meeting with others teams that only play in those 250k events against them. If they would be close events (invite only) the events would not be as appreciated if teams like VP/Envi wouldnt be playing in them. I saying no for this!

If they could tie them down for maybe 3-4 months a year, then I'd be fine with it. Then they could run all their tournaments, online and offline in those time periods, but still leaving most of the year open for other competitions. A complete monopoly still has different "options". Do they want to become FIFA/UEFA or more of a "NFL"-type organisation, using drafting systems etc. But overall, I feel this is a direct opposite of what has made CS in general so big and popular through the years. Monopoly is rarely ever a good thing for the consumer. Having competition is good for all parties.

This would more or less kill the excitement of the rest of the scene. The current way is way better, quite similar to the tennis way. Few majors with all the good teams and then small tournaments with a lot of t2 teams and some big names. This is only splitting the scene if anything in to a t1 part and t2 part where we will never see them go up against each other. Esl Fuck you

I don't know how I would feel about this. Although to be honest I have to admit that in my opinion almost too many leagues and games are being played at the same time and that it could potentially demotivate the viewers after some time and cause some sort of oversaturation. Having one really big league like LCS in lol would in my opinion be better than having many smaller unofficial leagues. So if this exclusivity deal was to establish one big league I would be for it, but having an exclusivity deal for tournaments would be a pretty bad idea. My "ideal" vision of the professional CSGO scene would be similiar to the Tennis system with the addition of an official CSGO League. So 4 majors a year and 1 official League with 2 seasons a year for the best teams in the world. Basically 6 Major lan finals with 1 million dollar price money each. No other leagues. And then dozens of smaller tournaments. So exclusivity deal to just have one official league? I'd like that. But an exclusivity deal for all tournaments would be very bad

The LCS format is absolutely horrendous. The format CS:GO has is easily the best out of all the competitive titles out there right now. For context, and to explain why the CS:GO format is so beautiful I would urge you to watch this video where Thorin explains it in a lot of depth. youtube.com/watch?v=qznkcHYOyNA

I think I watched parts of that video and I remember him talking about having 3-4 majors a year like in Tennis. I like this and I said it in my post as well. The only thing I don't like about professional CSGO is the league structure. There are sooo many leagues and games at the same time that it's really hard to keep up sometimes. Keep the tournament structure like it is right now: So 3-4 majors a year (4 would be perfect) and dozens of smaller tournaments but create one big official league with 2-3 seasons a year instead of so many smaller ones. I don't know how that would be worse. The only thing that would be different is that there would be less leagues.

Im on board with u bud. Plus maybe ESL can address all the things that Valve has been lacking like community feedback, a better VAC system etc. And maybe later on we can actually have the real 'top 10 team' based on their performances, not from what Thorin or HLTV think those team should be ranked. This move might actually expand CSGO ten folds, or it might not. Until ESL makes a formal announcement regarding this, all we can do right now is make assumptions after assumptions.

tennis system is great imo one big organisation but many different tourneys each week as well as major ones 4 times a year and in tennis every player is able to qualify if he is good enough this is how its supposed to be imo

I feel like for such a large prize pool on the line, we should try to promote to other parts of the world besides EU first, through extensive scouting of the best players from all corners of the globe and encouraging more esport organisations to recognise and sponsor these 'fresh talents'. I would like to see newer faces take the trophy instead of the usual T1 teams since CS has extensively grown withing the past 2 years. It's good that finally newer teams are being scouted in Asia for example but i think more can be done to encourage more people from these unknown regions of the globe to be apart of CSGO's competitive scene and that it can be a viable esport to earn a decent living off if they have the talent and dedication. Just look at how dota/lol changed the Asian esport scene

Id be down to see it happen, maybe just for a year or so to see how it goes. As mentioned, it's only the top(!) teams that are being tied down. So perhaps organisations will pick up a second team for smaller events and online stuff. Have newer teams compete to get into ESL and what not. Not loving the idea, but i would like to see how it would turn out. As long as the money doesn't run out to soon.

If they do it right and in coordination with Valve this could be great. Seriously some kind of schedule like this would be perfect. 1 official league with 3 seasons a year. Basically LCS clone with NA, EU, Asia/Oceania, SA division. 1 Million $ price money per season = 3 million per year 4 major tournaments a year with sticker money etc. 1 Million each = 4 million a year 16 smaller tournaments spread throughout the year. Each 200.000 price money So in total 23 lans a year (every ~2 weeks with a little break in the summer) with 10.2 Million dollars price money. + 4 times Sticker money + higher salaries Keep it clean and structured and not this chaotic mess like right now Good for the players, good for the viewers.

A company that want to kill the competition and build a monopoly doesn't sound bad to you? And if this go trough then don't forget what happens when someone can make all the calls on something, PPV, rigged tournaments, casters getting their jobs just because the business interest in something, locked out orgs or players, ability to change game rules (there is a lot of harm than could be done in long term with this) and a lot of other stuff. Make of CS a more organized eSport is something than will happen eventually, but no is not the moment and will stop the grow of the game. Remember than all big eSports are supported for their casual playerbase. And lots of people will get away from the game if the comp scene is someones monopoly, since all people than try hard to get pro will find a lot of new barriers to reach that level and will not be related to their skill. Consider than being skilled in any normal sport doesn't automatically makes you able to be a pro, there is a lot of differents things than you need to overcome to reach that spot.

Is the NBA bad because it's a monopoly? Is the champions league bad because it's a monopoly? The premier league, bundesliga, NFL etc? I don't see how an officially regulated professional scene would be a bad thing. That is how it's done in every sport in the world. Technically it's a monopoly yes, but a monopoly in sports is normal and not a bad thing. Of course it can be if the organisor is very bad but I'm just assuming that ESL would do a good and fair job. And those dangers are still there with the current system. Also those 16 smaller tournaments could be open for every pro team to qualify and also like Copenhagen Games/Dreamhack with a BYOC section. So basically not very different to the current system. In the league you'd have division 2,3 etc. where weaker teams have the opportunity to reach the promote to the top level. Just like ESEA Invite/Main/Premier/Open etc. Newer teams and players would still have the same chance to go pro. I don't know how ESL would do this but this is just my "dream" version of professional CS if I were in charge. I admit though it's highly unrealistic that such a system would be implemented soon.

What if they do exactly what Gfinty, eswc, dreamhack do but just under the ESL nametag? So that there is the same amount of big tournaments like right now just with the only difference that they all operate under ESL and all have higher price pools. Don't see how this would be bad. Nothing would really change. The scene would just be more structured and professional

Actually this might be the right approach. Much like the NFL and MLB a large governing body for top teams will: put official rules in place, hold athletes to a higher standered, and organize the scene into a manageable and well oiled machine. There will still e other tournaments for 2n tier teams its just like professional sports creating te "big leagues".

You are comparing apple with oranges and people don't seem to understand it. It would be the same if Valve's do this, since they are the only ones able to change it's rules or the core game whenever they want. What would really happen it's just a business company monopolizing the high class competitive scene of the game just because business, that's a bunch of crap

I was little sketchy about this when i read that teams won't be able to attend any other tournaments. However when i read the update "...ESL is not interested in locking out any tournament organizers from running CS:GO events, nor teams from attending them." all i can say that its really good idea.

It's the same, they don't stop them to do it. But if you offer more money than the rest of orgs you will keep monopolizing the scene even if it's not for legal contracts.

Woud be great for organizations who want to be apart of CS:GO tho. It woud be easyer for teams and organizations to structure the future for a team, and set creal goals. As you see in LCS and the LoL scene with Challenger Series getting bigger as well. Hope to see something simular to LCS in CS :D

I read the update where the ESL states they are not looking to tie teams down, but I still want to leave this here because we've seen it in other esports: Exclusivity kills CS. It has always been carried on the broad shoulders of a big and diversed community. Everything the game is and has is derived for the most part from people holding on to it. That includes the ESL that supported 1.6 competitively probably longer than reasonably expectable. If you seperate the top end of the game from the rest, there will not be an united community anymore. More or less cutting off the branch you are sitting on.

- 10 teams in division 1 - top 4 from league standings play each other for championship - bottom 4 drop down to lower division to keep rotation of teams - Same with 2nd, 3rd division with that change that top 4 advance to the higher division. In this scenario every team could have a chance to have shot on big money. Top teams won't "throw" matches because they can drop down to the lower division and gain less money. Tier 2 teams can advance to 1st division and make some money even if they will drop next season.

I don't see anything wrong with this. Monopolizing csgo is a good idea. It's seen in sports throughout the US such as the NFL nhl NBA and MLB. It will finally fix this washed out nonsense we have of daily games.

Lol the sports systems in the US are actually one of the worst and unexciting ever. Just because you're used to something doesn't mean it's good. Especially the NHL, they lock players so we don't see the best players at the World Cup. They transfer teams like if it's nothing, no tradition etc.. Seriously NHL is a shit league which just happens to have the money.

Why would you not want a LCS for CS:GO? They have already said they are not trying to stop teams from playing in other things as well as other orgs running tournaments. An LCS type league would be beneficial for CS:GO and the viewers. This would allow "LAN" setting for each match and you could also boost up the production value. Teams have the potential of getting better as well, due to team houses and LAN settings, but this would also need a "Challenger" type series underneath it where teams can be knocked off from the primary league if they play like shit.

We all know team houses don't work in CS:GO. A LAN setting could be interesting for every match, I won't deny that, but the way LCS runs things I'd rather not see it implemented in CS:GO.

It doesn't sound bad, but if ESL will monopolize CS:GO top teams then it's just Valve fault. CSGO (500k players on daily basis) majors with prize pool of only 250k. Dota has 50 times bigger prizepools.

two things 1: i foyu dont win the big prizes, what is left for the teams? 2: better if they could take csgo away from valve than from other organizers. As long as valve can ruin they gameplay at will, they stiull have them by their D's but its good if competitve cs would get taken away from valve since they care zero about the competitive scene

If there's anything we should have learned by now, it's to NOT TRUST ESL when it comes to the CSGO scene. Let them host tournaments and everything, that's great. But they have consistently done harm to the scene over the last decade. BAD IDEA.

Lol, play cs 1.6 if you want. Even if CS:GO dies, all huge orgas won't go back to cs 1.6 because it isn't as profitable as CS:GO -> small amount of tournaments with low prizemoney -> most pros will probably retire, because they're old now and some even have families to take care of.

why is everyone hating this? they could be like the FIFA for CS. they could organize t1-t10 leagues.

Good news for teams, bad news for the scene. locking down the top teams to ESL only makes anything outside of ESL look irrelevant. I hope this doesn't go through.

Finally more money. The viewers and the game has been increasing alot while prizepurses have been pretty much the same.

People in this thread are retarded. This is AMAZING for the scene. Finally we will know who are truly PRO gamers. REAL sports do the same exact thing. Also the players will be properly paid, can form a players union to protect each other, and those lesser tier 2 teams can become their practice partners. To have one stable league that runs the real pro scene and all the lesser leagues and tournament organizers can help out to build the semi-pro scene so the players that thrive in the semi-pro leagues can be scouted out by the pro teams in ESL to bring them onto their teams. And this doesn't have to be like the LCS. In some real sports there is as many as 32 teams. That is a lot of teams with many players that are in the top level. This sort of structure is better, makes it easier to follow the scene, and makes the whole system stable. Only people mad about this are probably idiots that got brainwashed by salty TOs from other leagues.

not necessarily, teams would prioritize ESL tournaments over other tournaments. dreamhack, faceit, gfinity, MLG and others wouldn't have the big teams anymore. A chance of winning xx million dollars in a whole year vs 50k for one event?

The era of CGS didn't have a platform like twitch that gets million of viewers a day, esports wasn't as big, and what kid can afford to pay for directv to watch some counter-strike? TV is a dying platform for the digital age for young viewers.

If this goes ahead then you can be sure other than when using 'low' or 'mobile' quality, ESL CS tournaments shown on twitch will require a pay to view format.

If Valve isn't involved, does that mean that Swag/AZK/DaZed/Steel will be able to play top level CSGO once again? Hopefully! iBP was the best NA team @ CSGO.

I really wish this to happen and then the spectator numbers to drop dramatically, so they can really enjoy their "exclusivity", as in a boycott. But that won't probably happen. $18M is just a number, pure advertising. No specifics about it. It is just disrespectful to present it like that. You become a market leader by offering a very good product, not forcing anyone to play under a contract. I don't know if this is even legal. I hope it's not.
