TobiWan: "CS:GO doesn't need a TI"

Our final piece of content from CCS Kick-off Season Finals is a sitdown with Toby "TobiWan" Dawson, talking about the challenges of casting a new game, his future and the differences in tournament formats of DotA 2 and CS:GO.

After commentating the on-line phase together with Matthew "Sadokist" Trivett, the duo was chosen to cast the CCS Kick-off Season Finals as well, which meant we got to talk to him about a number of topics.

Those include some of the Australian's history in his casting career, the biggest challenges of getting into a new-game and CS:GO specifically and how much he would like to cast in the future.

Lastly, he shared his thoughts on differences between tournament formats in CS:GO and DotA 2 before closing out with a message to the HLTV.org community.

With this video, we conclude our CCS Kick-off Season Finals coverage, if you missed some of our content from Bucharest, go over to the tournament hub here.

Still knows too little about the game, Tobiwan. His hype level is great doe, team him with an expert and he will turn into a great caster!

for hltv admins it doesnt matter, any critic to their beloved australian people is a reason to ban. they ll ban me too. just look. Tobiwan is a terrible caster because he makes mistakes almost in every round. He doesnt even know game mechanics, he doesnt know teams, the scene. Beside it his constant screaming is very tiring so a viewers cant stand more than a few rounds. Look at Anders to compare. Anders knows what is going on so he modulate his voice. Tobiwan doesnt know it though so he hypes almost everything, making plenty of mistakes btw.

+1 Tobi was awful, the biggest minus of CCS. Just spewed so much non-sense, mixing up what force-buys and eco's meant, talking about people being 'dinked' with a scout when they got bodyshot, having no clue about any mechanics. He was good at screaming, that was pretty much it.

Just to put this here for those who I am pretty certain won't watch the video and just reads the title (which is a bit miss leading): The reasoning behind me saying CS:GO doesn't need a TI is because the major problem with The International is it eclipses everything else in the calendar year. Which basically means to a large part of the Dota community (and players) there is only 2-3 weeks a year that really matter to them. The model structure for CS:GO majors is as close to perfect as I have seen so far, the only thing would be that Valve could easily find more ways to push money into the prize pool. Dota 2 raises a crap ton of money and the CS:GO market is even stronger than the Dota 2 one, so that was the points I was making about the whole TI questions. ------- I also wanted to say I had great fun casting CS:GO, I know I didn't do the best job and that pisses me off. I am also very aware I need to take a few weeks/monthss of just playing CS:GO and training with as many pro players that can spare the time (when I can find time around my other commitments). My knowledge is that of a Silver, and my perspective of the game (following and anticipating) are not good enough to bring something meaningful to a stream. Hype is what I do but it is not enough, and I will see you all again in a CS:GO stream when I believe I can bring something more than Hype. **Most of this stuff I also said during the video, I suggest you watch it --- and ask any questions you want, I am very open about answering things**

I've followed you in dota for quite a while, and I have the utmost respect for your casting. Just keep working at it and I'm sure you'll be able to provide people with in-depth casting of CSGO. Btw, I don't know if sadokist told you about the interview he did at Copenhagen Games, but I told him to give you my regards ;-)

This is EXACTLY what I pointed out! Just keep at it, get familiar with the game, try improve yourself in it as well and just keep improve! You can be one of the best play-by-play/hype-casters (TosspoT-type caster) in the scene, just have a real go at it and dont quit too early! Wish everything well in the future mate! Was a great event all in all!

Which is still not enough to be a good caster. Playbyplay casting is the same bs like a support role in cs, made up to excuse poor performance. being a pro caster means you follow the scene and keep yourself updated all the time for YEARS. if you have other obligations you ll never became a good caster on ander's or day9's level. I ll not even mention korean OSL scbw casters :)

I very much enjoyed your casting, I think if you started casting with someone with more knowledge like Moses, Anders, or a pro/former pro like Fiflarren you would have a lot to offer(especially since we only have one or two good casters at the hype aspect). I don't want to see you just leave after one tournament so just keep at it man!

U have an amazing potential. As u say u only need to play more and stay more updated with the scene. U did all things considered a great job. That goes for all of the PGL staff very nice stream, top 2 with MLG. Also big up that u come here to HLTV and speak to us directly. I was very skeptical at the beginning, but u proved me wrong. I hope u do more CSGO stuff. :)

you living on EU or USA? the best way to understand the game/meta game, is, as you might figure, playing a lot of it. you don't necessarily play with pros to understand the game, although it helps, obviously. if you on EU and want to play, it me up. my steam id is the same as my nickname on HLTV (id/antCB)

Hey TobiWan I think you're doing a great job, considering how new you are to the whole CS:GO thing. One mistake I've seen you make a couple of times, is that if a CT is saving his weapon he still gets money, even if he dies in the seconds after a round is over, it's only the terrorists that doesn't get money when saving, and why it's so devastating to get killed after the timer has run out.

Not really, but a higher prizepool is absolutely required for the majors. 250k feels like 1% of what Valve is making off of tournaments like these in all their different sales.

well Valve decides who casts the final of a potential CSGO TI. Just like they decide who casts the final during the Dota 2 TI. They usually observe the casters during the actual torunament and then pick the one they like the most. Not the one the community wants to see or so. They have weird ways but they were right thus far in Dota 2 ("__")

I think you did a really good job on casting the PGL series, don't worry about the haters. The truth is...here in CS:GO we don't have the luxury of casters like in DotA2. Most of them have poor language skills, non-fluid talk and cringe moments, despite their advance game knowledge. And the list could go on... Also most casters bring zero hype to a game, sometimes I feel like I'm watching a golf game and everyone claps very slowly... Most casters when they try to hype a game they just "omg guyz this game gonna be gud" before the game starts...but real hype is brought when the plays take place and the caster shares the momentum of the play with the viewer. Like your famous "black hole" (that came out wrong lol). As constructive feedback, what you could improve: - Be more "multitaking", I've seen you do not pay attention that much to the minimap. You should throw an eye on it from time to time, as it give out a lot of info that you can use when casting; You can see where fights will take place before they even start, you can see fake plays, rotations, lurk players, flanks, where bomb is situated etc. I can't empathise enough how much info you can gain just from the minimap. - Strengthen your CS vocabulary, as you seen a lot of viewers criticized you for calling "dinked" when a player got hit by a Scout. "Dink/Ding" is just for headshots. So for example M4 variants from CT will never one shot headshot a target. It will deal ~80dmg. So a target hit in the head with M4 that got away...you can say that he got "dinked", same thing applies to pistols. Dink! is the sound the head helmet makes when hit :) Or at least it used to be in previous CS games. As for targets that got hit by Scout or AWP and got away. In 1.6 they were called "legged" "I've legged him". Due to how it worked there in that game, and kinda transfered, But you can simply use the word "tagged". "X tagged Y with the Scout bringing him to low HP". - Play the game a bit more. Sometimes players hit stunning shots that are real hard or spectacular but error 404 hype is missing :D That is because you don't play the game enough to actually know how hard the shot was to pull off. - A bit more synergy with your co-caster, you dont have to like him :D just cast the game, be friendly etc...go with the flow. I'm saying this as I've seen during qualifiers you and Sadokist where trying to bully each other...to make it fun? or smth? sometimes it went ok sometimes it came out cringy :) So in future casts if moments like this arise...dont make it cringe...just have laugh about it and have fun even if the bad joke is directed to you, treating it that waym would bring fluidity to the cast and no cringe moments.

no 3 majors and 1 TI ("__") www.dota2.com/majors/ blog.dota2.com/2015/04/the-dota-major-ch.. Its probably to stablize the scene cause it got a bit weird. People were only caring about TI and everything revolved around it. It also saves them from the fact that the prizepool doesnt have to grow anymore because last year it was already $11 million or so and that probably isnt viable. I expect $15-$20 million this year though and then the money spreads over the year i guess ("__")

in one of the games he was casting, probably qualifiers for this tournament, I heard him (tobiwan himself) say he has 1k hours in CS:GO and 90% of that was casting matches. I don't like those casters, would rather have people like DDK duo who play the game at a decent level and can make interesting comments because of it.

Yeah, I guess he would be a lot better if he actually puts some effort in playing the game as well. Who knows, maybe he'll start playing it more like Anders did for example.

did you watch the interview by any means? He said that he's not really good AT THE MOMENT because his main job is casting D2, and not CSGO. Give him some time and you will see he will actually get better than some of the casters we have now. At the end of the day I enjoy listening to Tobi more, regardless of his knowledge about the game, than I enjoy listening to anders and semmler really. Black and White DDK at the top.

Was going to explain everything, but I'm not in the mood for writing another wall of text, explaining something to someone who's not willing to even give more chances to a guy that literally has zero experience in the game to improve. Everyone gotta start somewhere, I hope you know that.

I get your point, you dont get mine. Tobi casts CS:GO because it means he gets more work, not because he cares about CS, he never even played it but went straight into casting. Fuck that, get someone who actually loves the game casting. But yeah I also feel thats enough cs go caster discussion for me today, but tobi is a caster in the mould of pansy, deman, tosspot etc.

i kinda have to agree, although pansy at least streams and plays the game like all the time, but about tosspot and deman +1. while we have guys like anders and semmler who were there from the beginning, or even a bunch of the NA casters that have been around for a long time, although they probably barely make any money out of all these muricano streams. ddk and black ddk have also been around for long now and their profession is just this game, they cast faceit games at every timezone and by now they just know what theyre talking about. im not sure what some kid from dota is doing here. i dont give a fuck if he casted the biggest dota games ever and was amazing at it. he should climb up the ladder in csgo like all the others have, and not just get hired for the biggest tourneys straight away and suck at it.

What im amazed is how, can u AND sadokist be so blind, everytime someone misses a guy with low hp, u call he tagged him, in a round in this lan, one of the players had 36hp from the start, he got granaded, first u call he got hitted by awp, clearly not, then sadokist in the next 5s calls he got granaded again. I mean WTF are u watching, are u2 that slow? This happend on like 10-15 cases.

Tobi doesnt relize that while CS:GO doesnt need TI, it certainly doesnt need Tobi in the first place I remember the times when he was all about "competition between casters is good" and later on became burned out from the Dota scene altogether

IMO the rise of beyondthesummit showed true power of skins in dota2, summit's stream was linked on dota2lounge while joindota and other streams were not, and just like that summit streams had 40k while joindota 5k

I highly doubt it, the viewership from lounge makes around 5% and less, in this case it was just the pure fact that instead of building the production quality of the broadcast joindota overslept and its competition got ahead by a mile and despite the fact that at the beginning LD and Lumi were pretty poor casters, they eventually got even better then Tobi ever was and BTS completely took over the Dota casting scene due to lack of interest from the GD studio side

He's good to listen to,glad he moved to csgo, but we have a lot of great casters, but it's good because we have sooo many tournaments going on.. They can't do every one of them, so it's good to hear fresh voices from time to time, imagine if we were stuck with 1 duo every tournament, would be boring :/

The guy is a commentator-god in dota for a reason. He has a perfect voice for casting, he is comfortable infront of the camera and if you've seen some of the highlights from his dota commentating, the hype he creates is amazing. He tells you in the interview that he is still kinda new to the game, and he will get better. He will be a fantastic caster once he know the game better, i'm sure. It amazes me people who go to the forums and create a hate thread because he said AWP instead of a scout once or something like that. Did that ruin your experience, really? Did that make you angry? It's like the people who call tv-stations because they got offended by something

Toby doesn't even play CS but he's already a much better caster than the RoomOnFire guys. He's full of emotion and he doesn't talk hours about obvious stuff most casuals already know. Even if you don't like him, you have to respect the fact that he doesn't act like he understands the game like other casters. He's not bullshitting you for hours, he just mentions what he sees.

Me, and the majority of the community, doesn't want a caster who hasn't even played the game for fucks sake. We want (and we have) people passionate about csgo enough to dedicate full time in csgo, studying, playing and understanding it to the fullest, not good casters in other games that want to gain some extra cash. If he gets all the roles every topteam have in the scene constantly and gets a decent level of skill (at least dmg/eagle) maybe he can start being respected as a csgo caster.

I think a TI is exactly what this game needs. We are watching the same teams in the finals over and over again. A huge international would give more incentive for Asia and South America to put some good teams together. I would love if the rest of the world would put up a good fight against the best EU teams. A TI could generate new top contenders from all over the world, which would help the tournament scene a lot.

Implementing a TI successfully in the CS:GO scene would need two conditions: 1. The current majors stay, and their prize purse need to be at least doubled. 2. There must not be a huge gap between the prize pools of TI and majors. A ratio of 3/1 would be the maximum in my opinion. The reason behind this is that if we want a dynamic and healthy scene, we need to have pro players dedicated to the game all year long, not only practising for one tournament.

very good casting throughout the tournament. not a lot of csgo knowledge but it's not necessary as long as they don't think they know and try to give their opinion on how the teams should play. and they didn't do that much. sure there were some things they said that annoyed me but all in all i enjoyed the casting!

Yes i'm looking at you Anders Sadokist and some of the guys like Richard Lewis ..cadiaN or any one else who thinks they can give analythic toughs on the game. #237 it means this. The international A Dota 2 tournament global one which had over 10million dollars prize pool last year and is expected to get even more of a prize pool this year. How ever it is hosted once a year and most of the prize pool comes from the community via skins/tickets or over all a package called "compendium" where you get all kind of jazz for around 40bucks a pop where some % of the 40bucks goes to the prize pool.
