Valve to support ESL One Cologne

The Electronic Sports League has announced that ESL One Cologne will be a major CS:GO tournament with Valve support.

ESL One Cologne will run from August 20-23, with the group stage, held inside ESL's esports arena, leading up to the playoffs, which will take place at a 15,000-seater stadium to be built inside the Lanxess Arena.

The top eight from ESL One Katowice will square off with eight other teams, to be determined by qualifiers held in Europe, North America and Asia. The winning side will take home $100,000, almost half of the tournament's $250,000 prize purse.

Lanxess Arena will stage the ESL One Cologne playoffs

With Valve's support, ESL has guaranteed a number of "special features" leading up to and throughout the event, which will obviously include purchasable team stickers and the Pick'Em Challenge.

"After CS:GO surpassed one million concurrent viewers at ESL One Katowice, we now intend to raise the bar even higher with ESL One Cologne," said Ulrich Schulze, Managing Director of Pro Gaming at ESL. "

"By bringing teams from all over the world to the largest indoor arena in Germany, we are confident to make it the biggest and best CS:GO event ever hosted."

For the first time in the history of a major, there will be offline regional qualifiers to determine the final participants. Below you can find the dates and locations for these qualifiers, which will all be streamed live on Twitch:

  • Malaysia Asian qualifier - Kuala Lumpur - July 18-19
  • Germany European qualifier - Cologne - July 25-26
  • United States North American qualifier - Burbank - August 1-2
  • The following eight teams have secured places at ESL One Cologne after finishing in the top eight in Katowice:

    Sweden fnatic Sweden NiP
    Poland Virtus.pro France EnVyUs
    Germany mousesports Brazil Keyd Stars
Null element Na`Vi Denmark Team SoloMid

Tickets for ESL One Cologne are already on sale at Eventim, with prices ranging from 41 to 219 euros.

pretty much only attracting more viewers with their drops and team stickers. doubt that esl one cologne would beat the record without that stuff ;D

So basically valve wont add anything except stuff they benefit from. And esl agrees to this because it brings more viewers and ppl sitting and farming drops on all their accs? This industry is so shitty :/

Sticker money is more than the prize money for not even making it out of the groups in dreamhack.(If i remember correctly it was 50k for each team) So not that bad for the teams i'd say. Valve support is a big bonus for everyone involved.

I know, but I don't think this is how it should be. Teams getting out in groups getting more than half of what the winners of the whole tournament imo is making it less competitive. Sure, everyone benefits from this but mostly Valve themselves, by a lot.

It's the community giving the teams money for the stickers, not Valve. So you really can't blame volvo for it.

I know but valve sets up the system that way. They could use a lot of the money they make from stickers to add to the prize pool. I mean their prize pools can easily be 1 million+. Valve will still have a lot of sticker money over.

The esports key money is supposed to cover the tournament prize purses, and with the growth of the game they are obviously making a lot more now off keys than they were for past majors. But valve still only gives $250k :[

Still, does it matter? CS is constantly one of the top games on Twitch and Steam. This is a great thing compared to the times prior to CS:GO.

No I think Valve didn't know how to fit in a major alongside the 250k in August. Cologne was already set to be sucessful as everything except majors are going to be 15,000 people watching and it will be the biggest thus far.

valves pickem, sticker and drop-support is way more supportive for the event than increasing the prizemoney. They want it to be the biggest cs:go event so far, and it couldnt ever be this without valves features. so guys lets get hyped! this location has deserved it

i know "esports" attracts more and more big sponsors. don't get me wrong, i like gaming as a hobby but i think gaming as a job shouldn't exist. it's a very unhealthy life style and in my opinion the youth of today and tomorrow shouldn't waste their time with something like this.

He have a point though,we don't have to do gaming as a job, setting and facing a computer screen isn't healthy at all in fact you will be sacrificing friends, family and many other important things and obviously you don't have to be older to understand this but one thing though i am not ok when he calls CS a stupid game.

I think your argument is unreasonable. Both you and Gillette say it's an unhealthy lifestyle and that it's a waste of time. However, consider how many "adults" are working with IT helping people and work infront of computers all day anyways, how is it different? You might say it is different because they do something beneficial for the society, but esports is entertainment to ALOT of people and in my opinion that is very beneficial for the society. Comedians, artist etc. don't really benefit the society with more than entertainment and still they get praise whilst people look down on another type of entertainment - esports.

Probably we will see again fnatic winning a major. I don't think that NiP will make it to the finals again. And I think that nV will get rekt in the groupstage if they will play vs decent teams, but we will see.

250k stand alone major is awesome why people are complaining it's not 500k? how dumb are they? instead of having one single 500k tournament we will have two majors which is a lot better

People want 4 majors a year but not all of them 250k. I honestly dont give a fuck, teams always try hard at majors and the games are always great

You have no idea how much money ESL and Volvo have. 250 K is like 0.5 hr of income for them.

esl doesn't have much money it's all sponsor money and entrance fee. They need to economize wisely and take some risks to grow step by step. They can't just throw millions around. You're delusional if you think otherwise. And Valve's money will go to Dreamhack summer or Copenhagen games

FINALLY ASIA! Would be great if there was an SA and Oceania qual too though :/. I guess Vox and Immunity might travel to Europe if they reach the offline stage, and Kstars are already in the main event anyway, but still, it would be better for these regions to have their own offline qualifier.

the tournament is hosted by ESL and wasn't intended to be supported by Valve. The whole structure was made by ESL. Valve doesn't even want that. That's why they don't host tournaments themselves.

With Valve's support, ESL has guaranteed a number of "special features". One of those is the off qualifier

valve just give teams stickers and do the Pick'Em Challenge and provide drops but isn't involved in organization. The text doesn't even say one of those special features are the offline qualifiers

It's a move to gain viewership and attention from Asia. It's a huge eSports market, and if CS can be popular there, it means more viewers, so more money, etc.

I would like to be Valve's marketing manager, the group manages this business sector is very innocent, that golden opportunity that is letting through. Today csgo covers a number of spectators as high as MOBA's, and number of online players also very close. What's wrong then to give greater support to all these tournaments taking place every day, from this will leave a list of things that would be important: 1 - Professionalize the game the same way the RIOT made in the world, especially in China and South Korea, the reason is that everyone knows that they are the most passionate nation by E-Sports, thus making the game there will grow the game take greater proportions worldwide, this tactic was made by RIOT and worked very well, the own Coca-Cola began to stamp their bottles in the game champions. 2 - Changing the reward system of the championships, everyone knows what notice about a tournament is the value of the awards, the system they have adopted at The International Dota2 was very efficient, why not apply the same in csgo? They can do this in several ways, * Create a system of grants to award equal to Dota in each tournament, * Spend a percentage of all sales market items in a period of time for the tournament, * Changing the system to stickert 50% dedicated to their team and the other 50% going to the final award. 3 - Sponsor one super tournament per year "The International csgo" with the 16 best teams of all countries and a super prize. Today csgo has no strong competitor because of this Valve little strive to achieve a new level with the game, the csgo is monopolized in the European continent and has several championships a year, but all to no marketing and enough awards to draw attention of the world, but especially the game should expand into Asia where you can get a new legion of fans, creating a strong foundation for when the new engine is finally implemented the game have reached high standards and the number of fans further increase .

higher prize = higher incentive for the pro's to go hard, really put their life on hold for CS for a while so they can are at the top of their skill / run new strats etc. You don't get that for 50k tourneys. Also just creates more drama in general.

There is an Australian LAN (ACL Sydney) event happening in late June where the winner gets an invite to the Asian qualifiers.

I'm surprised this wasn't already decided? Valve sponsored the last ESL One Cologne, so why have the announcement at all? Surely it would be assumed knowledge based on the growing popularity of the game.
