ESL unveils anti-PED measures

The ESL has announced the first measures to tackle the use of Performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) at its events.

Kory "⁠SEMPHIS⁠" Friesen's recent revelation that Cloud9's players were taking Adderall, a psychostimulant drug used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), during ESL One Katowice earlier in the year has stirred the debate about the use of PEDs by professional esports players.

After previously announcing that a plan was underway to begin "drug policing, education, and prevention among participants of [its] competitions", ESL has now revealed that it has partnered with the Nationale Anti Doping Agentur (NADA), "to help create an anti-PED policy that is fair, feasible and conclusive while also respecting the privacy of players."

At ESL One Cologne players will be tested for controlled substances

ESL also has plans to meet with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to enforce its anti-drug policy in other regions, such as the United States and Asia.

"The expertise of NADA and WADA will help ESL to produce a PED prevention program that will encompass all players participating in competitions organized, hosted or produced by ESL," a statement by the ESL read.

"This program will help ensure that all players are provided with the information and structural support they need to help them manage the physical and emotional pressure of professional gaming."

At ESL One Cologne, in August, players will be tested for controlled substances as ESL wants to ensure that its "values of exemplary sportsmanship and integrity are maintained." In the future, every Intel Extreme Masters, ESL One and ESL ESEA Pro League event will also have these very same tests administered, the German company has guaranteed.

Legit, lol. If you watch the whole video, you'll see during the slowed-down-zoomed-in part that while Shox's aimkey is bugging out/stuck, it actually aimlocks at all four remaining C9 players. First it points towards the guy at B, then the guy in Mid, and finally bounces between Shroud and the guy at A for a few seconds before Shox manages to unstick it. This clip is far more damning than any single Flusha clip, though Flusha's laundry list of clips in totality is probably more damning overall. You really deserve a ban, boy. Let us, stupid people, know, what are security measurements on ESL events? Because as far as I remember, the only event with high security, from cheaters was CPL. If you wanted to use your cfg, you had to send it to admins weeks before event, the pc's didnt had internet connection, you may be using only your mouse, keyboard and headphones and a console. To be honest i dont know, what theire doing on esl events aagainst cheaters. Tell me :)

I don't know why people call you and idiot for believing someone is cheating. Like seriously... For how long have we thought cheating in CSGO was because of VAC almost imposible. And guess what? KQLY and company got fucked. VAC is not perfect. I am pretty sure that at least some of the pros (not necessarily tier 1) cheat / have cheated. They don't have to drop a 30 bomb every game. The amout of info they can get for their team by those subtle cheats is enormous. The can just say "I think I heard someone at car" and boom, the guy gets killed.

No, sorry, the anti cheat measures have been discussed, all large tournament organizers agreed to the same policies months ago and an article was right here on HLTV. The information is there, anyone who understands how computers work can accept the systems are secure. Pointing to HERESAY by a self-serving cheat coder **** or one isolated incident doesn't change the facts about LAN security. It just doesn't. You can't install software on their LAN systems even if you were allowed to have a memory stick, under the supervised conditions. You'd be able to do it IF you had physical access to the system with NOONE AROUND for at least 5 minutes, possibly longer depending on any further measures. I do not know if they are using a system that ensures file integrity but those are nothing new - you boot the system up and anything that has changed without authorisation is reverted to the correct files, imagine a per-boot version of laptop restore software. This is a very very old technology, so old I don't remember the name of the one I've seen. Let's assume though that when you manually access the filesystem and registry so your cheat is on the system and will be active when the OS boots. The only way to install the cheat software is just that, MANUALLY install via another OS or taking the hard drive out.. how are you going to do that while all the people are around, venue cameras and all ? if you don't see that MANUALLY modifying the OS filesystem and registry is required, why are you arguing in the first place ? you don't know what is going on so you are coming to a conclusion based on no information, worse, MISINFORMATION spread by others in the same position. It's DELUSIONAL to keep believing maybe, via some magic, people bypass all the layers of security and install cheats on these LAN computers. Yes an open mind is an absolutely wonderful thing, most of the time, but without the knowledge of the security layers in place and how they work, it's just so delusional. The problem is not an easy one to solve, the sheer number of computer illiterate (security and otherwise) people in the community that perpetuate myths and heresay is like a snowball rolling down a giant hill, only getting bigger. Anyone can get on the internet, spread lies and misinformation and 99.99% of people reading it don't have the knowledge to properly assess what they read/hear. Tell a convincing enough story about someone who cheats and cry foul, guess what, shit ton of people will also complain, and spread it. Valve or ESL could spend a good chunk of cash making an in depth presentation on security, even though to actually explain things properly is going to be long and complicated. Maybe it's been considered but the bottom line was why bother ? human nature.. most people saying these things would still point to Valve's workshop flaw, despite long being fixed and they'd still consider a cheat coder saying pros cheat, as a credible source. Of course they're going to say that, it can only bring them more business, not less. You can't tell people things they don't want to hear. You can't make people listen when they have a contrary belief. You just can't get through, people need to experience and learn things themselves. Its pretty easy to keep a pill of Adderall in your pocket or where ever to take after you have been tested. They will just have to stay clean up until that point. Amphetamines like Adderall I believe are water soluble and can be flushed out of your system within 3 days of a healthy diet.

As far as I know, WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) declares that anyone that is subject to anti-doping measures must ensure that medication they take don't contain any banned substances through either contacting the doctor, pharmacist or the organization itself. There could be case where ESL in the future employs their own doctor that could prescribe certain medications that could be used during such events. For now, just banning substance and putting everybody under the same rules is most probable solution.

According to this press release of the annual drug report, the MLB issued 113 Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) in 2014, and all but one were for prescription treatments associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In MLB there are a LOT of players who are issued medical exemptions by the league which allow them to take Adderall on a daily basis after they get proper paperwork and evaluations by 3 Drs I think. Shane Victorino was the posterboy for this as he was one of the first and did commercials and stuff for ADHD. Carlos Ruiz got banned for 25games one year, got a medical exemption the next. Chris Davis the same thing except he didnt get Adderall he got something different because of the less abuse potential but I feel he did it to show he really needed it since adderall is highly abused.

You don't have any proof to say that they are using Adderall. In addition, you can't claim that their use of it is boosting their performance. There is no evidence to their use/lack of use of Adderall, other than Semphis's claim. But their is no proof to his claim, other than him saying that their behavior was "abnormal." At the same time, there isn't any proof to say he's wrong. There may never be solid proof on this topic. All these assumptions and accusations on it are pretty ignorant and people should wait for solid proof.

It used to be almost compulsory for a doctor or psych to prescribe some sort of med for any kid that came in front of them "just in case" any ADD/ADHD symptoms were present. In Canada in the late 1990's I was tested thoroughly and that's always been the way it was done, even in the early development of diagnostic and treatment practices for those kinds of disorders. Only in the last 5 years has the US become more stringent and more discriminating in how those meds are distributed. People can still fake it to get stuff to sell, but longer term prescriptions or more powerful meds to treat ADD and ADHD are fairly heavily controlled, now. There has to be testing and several opinions from several medical sources in agreement to get the good stuff.

ADD/ADHD does not like get tested in a day or something. I've done it and it took me a while to convince my doctor that I have ADD (I obviously don't have it). - I had to convince my regular doctor which I always go to when I'm sick. He had to give me a signed letter stating he believes I might have ADD/ADHD and he recommended me to a psychologist. I had to an intake appointment for them to see if it might be a such case. They believed me. So I had to go there another 5 times, do some tests, they checked my old school reports, did some more testing and eventually they told me that I have ADD. This shit costed me 375 Euro's. In Holland we are insured for these type of things, but we always have 'Own Risk' amount. Which is around 375 euro. Meaning costs till €375 you pay yourself. Above it, the insurance company pays. Anyway, to sum it up: It's not easy nor it's cheap to do this test. They even check your behaviour at elementary school. I think the total costs was way above 375 Euro. 5 times to Psychologist is not cheap if you are not insured. And an American insurance company will never cover the costs of this type of test abroad, why would they.

That's why they should get tested in EU so it's fair. Also imo, their org should pay for it - they should have known that the players was on adderal and accepted it - so they're the ones who actually triggered all this stuff. So yeah..

To get a full team tested here in Holland would cost around €7k-€8k. This includes their costs for their stay. If they pay €20k for a player, yeah...if the team says they will win prices because of these drugs then you are right. They will most likely pay for it now that I think of it.

Dude, I don't know how that works for you, but I get my medicine for ADD (I do actually have it) entirely for free and it took WAY less than 6+ appointments to get it. I think the difference might be age or maybe insurance package, but your situation sounds kinda extreme. (Could also be a different kind of medicine. In fact, it likely is.) Perhaps you took these tests a long time ago, since I had mine 2/3 years ago and the last one half a year ago (only took 1 test to get my meds back!), but I still think it's weird that they had to test you so often when it took me no effort at all.

The medicine is free, I dont pay for it. But I think it was the fact that I went to the doctor myself with the 'suspicion' that I had ADD. As you know it's pretty popular to get Ritalin for studies and such. So I think the doctors I went to suspected me first of getting the medicine without having ADD. They checked like everything, early school years and comments of my teachers. To see whether they mentioned some concentration problems. You were diagnosed 2/3 years ago, maybe then it was different. And because it was diagnosed, you probably got your meds back easily with one test. Took me a lot of effort to get diagnosed with ADD.

But what I find disturbing is that, now all the players on that level can never actually smoke cannabis before their tournament. Coz that shit stays in your blood for 3 weeks at least. Which is very unfair if you get caught. eSports is not like football, where you have to be fit. Look at flamie, flusha or JW. You can be a fat fuck but still perform. I see this question raised everywhere. (1) WADA and most testing bodies have therapeutic use exemption (TUE) processes built into the standard. For example (although I don't think this example is WADA sanctioned), in for the past five (?) years in Boxing, MMA, etc. competitors were allowed to take testosterone replacement therapy (i.e., after testing, it was shown they have hormonal imbalance, due to age, the rigours of boxing, etc). TRT is, essentially, legal steroids (vast simplification). So if a person requires any type of amphetamine or marijuana-derived medicines (if you're following specific states). You essentially fill out some paper work, and the governing body will check if it passes its TUE standard. (2) I'm surprised they're doing skin-patch tests. Essentially, the patch looks of metabolites for specific drugs that are left in the sweat. And to be honest, I've only ever seen skin-patch testing used by say probation officers. It's not designed for serious competition. More importantly, in-competition and out-of competition testing need to be clearly defined. To be honest, a piss-test should be the base-line for all testing, not skin.

Absolutely retarded decision. Not only is ESL generally lacking any sense of professionalism in every department from the software used as 'anti-cheating' detergent to the actual organization of their events, but they now want to limit what players can do with (or to) their bodies. The simple decision for those who used stimulants, beta blockers, benzos or something similar is to switch to RCs - with over 200 functional substitutes (not merely analogues) currently on the market the tests will prove themselves worthless and this whole policy gratuitous.

You can definitively tell their using it, its funny cause back then I never realized but now just watching them play on LAN is enough for me, look up the side effects of Adderall go watch some of their LAN games, even Pasha go watch him at LAN recently. Its even worse cause they spend all day drinking energy drinks with that shit in their stomach cant be good for them.

I am pretty sure Adderal and street amphetamines were around the (semi)pro-gaming scene for ages, and not only in CS. Can't say exactly about the very pros, but from my experience it was a usual thing on a local LANs here in Kiev People played clan-wars for real money, people played in a free tournaments for cash/gear, didn't took long for someone familiar with speeds to realize drugs can be used to gain advantage in reaction time/aiming, or improve one's coordination. It's just the way it was, I am pretty sure in other countries the situation was(or is) similar.

So what exactly is considered a performance enhancing drug and what´s not? I mean with Cannabis for example it´s more like the other way around as far as I can tell... It would be quiet unfair for those who like to use it even after they have played all of the matches of a day. And I don´t think that they have any plans in banning alcohol, at least after the games...

i havnt seen this argument yet so im just going to throw in my 2 cents. The ruling, though i understand it is self defeating. The place that any player thats abusing adderall will get an advantage from it, is not on the stage at the major where the tests take place. It is at home in between tournaments. Adderall is not going to improve their performance magically on stage when its time to perfor, i take this medication every day i understand how it works. The way that it improved my cs play is because of the amount of practice i put in outside of matches. I never used to DM a lot until i got adderall now i can practice for very long periods of time. Now relate that to pr players improving their gamkes, igl's studying hours apon hours of demos for anti stratting, and learning every players habits in every situation. THIS is where players will get their edge from. TO any player abusing addedrall it will only help them focus 100% and on stage at a major any player without an attention disorder will be focusing 100% anyway so they really gain no edge. Its in the off time that they will improve, learn, and better their play from the effects of adderall. In this way, the only people this rule hurts are the people who actually have attention dissorders, because only they would not be focusing 100% on the stage.

My thing is C9 was still doing horrible even after getting rid of semphis... Why didn't he make these comments when they were losing? Even if he's telling the truth, it simply looks like he's jealous. And no proof to back his claim? Smh. It did spark an ESL investigation though nonetheless. However, I don't believe the entire team is using adderall. If anyone is, it's n0thing and I'm sure he has a prescription for it. And to ban someone for using something they are legally prescribed is just gonna lead to bigger problems. Imo ofc.
