Cologne NA qualifier viewer's quide

The ESL One Cologne North American qualifier, which will give out the last two spots for the upcoming major, starts in just under two days and here's the viewer's guide with everything you need to know.

Eight North American teams are in the battle for the last couple of spots for ESL One Cologne, including Cloud9, Liquid, CLG and more, with the groups looking as follows:

Group A Group B
United States Cloud9 United States CLG
United States Team Liquid United States Mythic
United States Tempo Storm United States Maximum Effort
United States Noble Esports North America eLevate

Those will be played in the usual GSL-like best-of-one format, from which the top two sides advance to a best-of-three single elimination semi-finals. Winners of each semi-final receive a spot at the major.

The qualifier begins on Saturday, when most of the group stage is going to be played out, with the exception of the decider match, followed up by the semi-finals on Sunday:

Saturday, August 1st
19:00 United States Cloud9 vs. United States Noble A1 BO1
20:15 United States Tempo Storm  vs. United States Liquid A2 BO1
21:30 A1 winner vs. A2 winner A3 BO1
22:45 A1 loser vs. A2 loser A4 BO1
00:15 United States CLG vs. North America eLevate  B1 BO1
01:30 United States Maximum Effort vs. United States Mythic B2 BO1
02:45 B1 winner vs. B2 winner B3 BO1
04:00 B1 loser vs. B2 loser B4 BO1

Sunday, August 2nd
19:00 A3 loser vs. A4 winner A5 BO1
20:15 B3 loser vs. B4 winner B5 BO1
21:45 Semi-final #1 (B3 winner vs. A5 winner)   BO3
01:00 Semi-final #2 (A3 winner vs. B5 winner)   BO3

Note that the times mentioned above merely serve as an estimate, the matches will start as soon as possible after previous ones come to an end.

ESL have stressed that the event will not be open for the public, but all matches will naturally be broadcasted on ESL's official stream, which you will be able to find on our main page once it goes live.

CLG n C9, CLG will do better than C9 at Cologne.
2015-07-30 22:45

Cloud9 should qualify, but given the Bo1 format there's a lot of upset potential with both Liquid (who typically give C9 a run for their money) and Tempo Storm (very new team, hard to counter strat). I'd expect a C9/Forcebuyihilum and CLG/Liquid in the semis. TempoStorm and Liquid should be a good match though, and will have to pretty much play twice. Hopefully Liquid chokes and make roster moves since they have a ton of talent and have a ton of money to play with. Edit: Author, replace Luminosity with Mythic. Also fix your semi-finals: it's "(B3 winner vs. A5 winner)" not "(B1 winner vs. A5 winner)"

I agree. I actually think Nihilum's forcebuying habits can excel in a Bo1 format since they're underdogs. I can't say much about Elevate, I haven't seem them play outside of CEVO qualifiers against open teams. On paper, they are another good (relative to NA) team.

You don't understand how the groups work, its top 2 from each group go to a semi final, where c9 and tempo will not meet. This means the possibility of c9 and tempo qualifying is higher if they both are better than the rest

I signed up just to say this, I'm tired of seeing the same thrash NA teams, i.e. CLG and Liquid show up to these events with the same results. C9 is marginally better, on the world stage but let Tempo Storm show what they can do. Hopefully the results will be better.

Think C9 has proven that they're more than just 'marginally' better, after the past 4 events. Agree that CLG, and especially Liquid, have underwhelmed. By the way, your name sounds familiar. Did you ever play Wolfenstein:ET?
