Day one recap of IEM Gamescom

Here's a recap of day one at IEM Gamescom, which SK and EnVyUs have survived without a dent.

Day one in Cologne started off with the expected EnVyUs-TSM match-up, which has been voted on for nearly two days by the community.

TSM were in an uphill battle though, as de_cbble was chosen, which the Danish side is known not to play very often. The fresh French lineup was able to prevail following a strong Terrorist side 16-11, which cost TSM one of their four lives.

Thanks to the peculiar format, Vincent "Happy" Schopenhauer's side were given the opportunity to choose the next match-up, but according to the rules, were unable to pick either themselves and TSM.

They went with mousesports and Renegades instead, this time on de_dust2, which the German-based side was able to storm through with no real trouble 16-2.

Interestingly enough, mousesports didn't go with either of the favourites to have a chance to cause some damage, and decided to match up CLG and SK Gaming, the only couple that have not played a single match yet.

SK Gaming arrived with a stand-in, Nikola "NiKo" Kovač, of course, who led SK Gaming frag-wise to their first victory in Cologne on de_overpass after a confident 12-3 Counter-Terrorist side.

de_mirage was randomly chosen from the community's tweets and the victors decided to match their Danish comrades to Renegades on it.

The clear favourites didn't let their Australian opposition surprise them though, as Renegades lost another life after yet another one-sided result, this time 16-6.

Understandably, TSM wanted to cause as much damage as possible to their biggest threat at the tournament, EnVyUs, who they have lost to in the initial match of the tournament.

With that in mind, arguably the third best team at the tournament, mousesports, were picked to battle for one of their lives. That match ended up being the closest one, despite EnVyUs picking up a 14-8 lead. mousesports couldn't come back all the way though, as the Frenchmen closed it out at 16-13.

With the first five matches of the tournament and the first day over, the number of lives and matches are standing as follows:

W L Lives
France EnVyUs 2 0 4
Denmark SK 1 0 4
Germany mousesports  1 1 3
Denmark TSM 1 1 3
United States CLG 0 1 3
Australia Renegades 0 2 2

Tomorrow the action continues in Cologne, Germany, but we won't get to see which map or which teams get to play first before the start, per tournament rules.

"mousesports didn't go with either of the favourites to have a chance to cause some damage, and decided to match up CLG and SK Gaming, the only couple that have not played a single match yet." Isn't one of the rules, that only teams with the fewest matches played can be picked? So they didn't have much choice here...

Advanced Rules *For every game won, teams will get to choose which two teams play each other next. *Noone can play twice in a row (unless unavoidable) *One of the teams picked needs to be from the teams with the least amount of matches played.(until impossible) *Map choices will be made via community participation. A map that has been picked before can not be picked again that day.

This is actually a super fun tournament format, abeit not the best for a serious tournament like the major, but a fun change for both the fans and teams.

I think it's likely to work out like this: nV pick TSM vs SK. TSM pick CLG vs Renegades CLG pick nV vs mousesports nV pick TSM vs SK again TSM pick CLG vs Renegades again CLG wins again and Renegades eliminated, end of day 2.

The format is flawed with the random maps not decided by the teams. Also by guessing what the match ups will be fans can effectively rig it by choosing a teams best or worst map for the match up.

Mouz couldn't pick both teams, they had to use either CLG or SK in the matchup and there would be no reason to match them up against either EnVyUs or TSM as that would end up with the same result (either CLG or SK losing a life). Meaning that their pick could end up with another EnVyUs vs TSM game afterwards, but then SK played it smart. I have found the format fun so far - of course it will be intensified today when teams are loose more lives.
