ESL One Cologne group draw

The group draw for ESL One Cologne has been made, with the 16 participants having learned their fate in the tournament.

From August 20-23, ESL will host the next Valve-sponsored CS:GO major, with 16 teams from all over the world battling it out for a share of the $250,000 prize pool.

The tournament will kick off with a best-of-one, double-elimination group stage with a twist: at the end of day one, all groups will be played out in the Upper Bracket.

The four group winners will advance straight into the quarter-finals, and then the groups will be redrawn, pairing the 12 remaining sides against new opponents to determine the final teams that will make it to the playoffs.

fnatic to face Na`Vi, Titan and eBettle in the group stage

The quarter-finals, which will be played in a best-of-three, single-elimination format, will be seeded to prevent potential group stage rematches before the grand finals.

at gfinity vp got rekt by mouz in 2 BO3's. since then they had no match vs eachother. overall vp played shit the whole year for their standards, except at cevo finals which they could only win cause c9 and navi underperformed heavily e: bringing up that esl ranking shows how clueless you are; i also said for vp its a good matchup to play c9

In a BO3. They have lost, and come close to losing, in a BO1. Also, they lost in that BO3 at ESEA Season 16, little more than a year and a half, not two years. Honestly, because its a BO1, I think C9 could take VP and mouse if they get the right maps. C9 has always come close to beating VP on Overpass, and Cobble is becoming one of C9s stronger maps. Getting one of those two would be great for C9.

A hard group is when you have at least two teams out of 3 about the same level as you. CLG and Renegades are not on par. And TSM have under-performed two events in a row now. Also, even if TSM broke the NiP curse, they still haven't beaten them at a major. Finally, NiP are under the radar for quite some time now, while TSM has been playing and exposing their game. NiP couldn't have drawn a better group in my opinion. And even if they lose to TSM, their victory over either CLG or Renegades is likely.

I just explained to you why they have an easy group, and none of that had to do with any ranking. I'm telling you NiP have the advantage over any other team in the other groups. It doesn't mean they'll end up first of their group for sure, nothing is for sure in these tournaments, but they couldn't have had a better chance to do it in their current state.

But the way the system works TSM will (probably) passs the group stage on the first day. That leaves NiP to be in the big group reshuffle where they will end up against different teams on day 2 and could well not get out of the groups.

I personally think NiP have the edge over TSM in a Bo1 in the group-stage, for the reasons I explained above. I think it's TSM who's more likely to be in the reshuffle. But yes, if NiP fails to reach first place of their group, then they'll (maybe) have a harder time after the reshuffle, but my point was more regarding the fact that every single major so far, NiP have always drawn groups with only one real contender for first place.

Yes, that's the point I'm making indeed, and it has nothing to do with hating anyone, it's just my analysis of the situation. And I'm not counting TSM out, they have a decent chance of winning against NiP, but NiP has the advantage. I like to see NiP play just as I like to see TSM play, in fact there's not a single team I hate in the scene. You seem way more biased than I am to be honest.

In my opinion nV's group is a real minefield. Kinguin have the players with roughly the same skill level and same loose play-style (even if nV still have the time to add more structure to their game before the event, I don't know if that's really what Happy has in mind) and Scream who played for quite some time with most of nV's players, he knows them very well. F3 is a question mark, it's hard to know what to expect from them, which makes them dangerous. They haven't played that much, and even less against nV, so it'll be quite hard for nV to analyze them (and even harder since their roster has changed between matches). They also proved they could deliver without S1mple during the qualifiers. Luminosity, well they have shown pretty much nothing to anyone, again very hard to prepare for them, and they already surprised everyone at Katowice, they could do it again. Na'Vi and fnatic are not in a "good" group because Titan is under the radar, we don't really know what they can bring. If they bring a big game, it makes 3 big fish in a 4 teams group, could be tough fights. But it's not a "hard" group in itself. Na'Vi have some worries to have, because they lost many times to SmithZz and Shox in the past. In my opinion, the favorites with the difficulty of their group from hardest to easiest: C9, VP, nV, Na'Vi, fnatic, TSM, NiP.

That whole group is unpredictable imo. I could see all three of the "lower" teams managing to upset Envy and win the group. Especially Luminosity (good tactical side) and Kinguin (who can match Envy for skill). Envy are favourites but that group is wide open still as they're such a new side.

What redraw? Group A has the most potential to be a surprising group. NiP has been very inconsistant and predictable. CLG has been awesome in group stage matches (best of one matches) against bigger and better opponents. Renegades are really preparing for this. TSM should be clearly the favourites of the group (and even their results are shaky lately). And Group B doesnt look that difficult. I still dont believe in the Brazilians in making an impact. Kinguin has been getting better. Flipside is not a threath. Im really not on the Kinguin bandwagon, but i really think individual skills will win against the Brazilians.

It's normal best of 1 groups. So if TSM win vs CLG then win vs NiP (after they beat Renegades) they will go through to the Quarters (last 8). Then the remaining 3 teams in each group will be remixed with all the other remaining teams into new groups on day two and the next set of quarter finalists will be determined in the same way (I assume).

Wow. Again VP & C9 on a same group stage, mouz there as well. I can really see these teams mixing up the group totally. Mouz can beat VP (as shown before), C9 can easily beat mouz (and the otherway back) and VP. VP can still easily beat both of these teams when they are on top of their game. Mouz & VP are favorites IMO. Hope for C9s success though. NiP with possible the easiest group again - CLG and Renegades should not have possibility to an upset. TSM probably rekting every team with like 16-6 scores... Group B is group of death for every other team than nV, nV should be on clear water, but then these 3 teams... Kinguin has really shown some potential to play good CS, but so has LG and FS3.. (Flipsid3 has been even better after s1mple than they were with him..) Tight fight for the 2nd place, can go to anyone. Group C should be ez... I am pretty sure NaVi & Fnatic are so well prepared that theres no chance of upset on this group. There is no 2nd place in these groups, only first, as the tournament system is different. The first team through gets to the quarters but the remaining 3 teams (after day 1 ends) will be shuffled with all the other remaining teams into new groups. So it only matters who will top the group at the moment.

Easiest group for nV (only Kinguin might suprise), Titan will prolly go out in group once again. IMO: Group A - TSM, NiP (CLG & Renegades might upset NiP, but not likely - Renegades look pretty bad during their last event, CLG will probably choke against NiP magic). Group B - EnVyUS, Kinguin (Kinguin might upset nV & become 1st in their group, but I doubt LG or F3 to be able to win against both nV and Kinguin). Group C - Fnatic, Natus Vincere (Titan might advance as well, but it would require either really poor plays from Fnatic\Na`Vi or extremely high perfomance from Titan). Group D - Virtus.pro, Cloud9 (mousesports can upset both VP & C9, but they will probably be still tired from that LAN marathon they had & it might affect their preparation; Immunity don't stand a chance against either of these teams).

EnvyUs has a much easier group than NiP. In a sense, the hardest group is the VP/Mouz/Cloud9 group as no other group has 3 top-10 teams. Group A and C are in the middle with 2 strong teams in each.

Easily the stupidest rankings I've ever seen. NIP is the weakest in history like way more than before Katowice and Dreamhack winterso they're like 8 TSM is easily a top 3 no matter how you spin it. B is the easiest group. D is probably the hardest. A & C have two good teams in each, so in the middle. The setups pretty much guarantees that EnvyUs has the easiest route to the Quarterfinals. They have nobody in their group that should give them any trouble. A & C are more competitive, but D is a killer. VP/Mouz/Cloud9 means only one of those three gets to the Quarterfinals directly after the first round, meaning the other two have to fight it out for 4 open spots left, which will probably include such teams as NiP and NaVi. Not easy, but possible all of those 3 teams in D get to quarterfinals. The problem is the #2 team in Group B behind EnvyUs may bump out whoever is in 3rd place in Group D and yet be a much lesser team. That's unfortunately why Group B sucks. You're likely to see 7 of the 8 teams in the quarterfinals who belong there and one of the 8 that don't.

Can agree to this. after checking again i realised that D might indeed be pretty tough. its a good analysis you got there. but still, its the group stages. BO1 and double-elimination means that some major upsets might happen. it might not be too fair to be honest, but it sure does bring an element of surprise and some excitement into the early stages of the tournament. if things get too out of hand however, the rest of the tournament might be a little meh.

That Group D though.. As much as I cheer for Virtus Pro due to 1.6 history, C9 because they are probably only NA team who can compete on this level and now mouz who is kinda getting better results. I assume that Virtus Pro will fail as always, so atleast I can see mouz how far they can go.

Do we know, what teams are paired first in the Groups? I mean, what matches are to be played first? I know that e.g. fnatic cannot play NaVi first and NiP cannot play against TSM first, but are any further matches stipulated yet?

i'd say mouz and c9 are 50/50 at this point. Ofcourse i'd rather see mouz winning.

If group format hadn't changed; TSM, NiP ENVY, Kinguin fnatic, NaVi Cloud9, VP fnatic, ENVYUS, or TSM for the win I don't think the change will affect too much, but who knows right ?
